marlinspike [in progress]

Serafíne

There's a parking lot flanking the imposing Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception and framing said parking lot a little bit of greenspace: young trees planted in an artless row on a grassy little knoll where homeless men like to hangout on hot summer afternoons. You don't see as many men there on cold snowy evenings. If anyone's out there, the sexton at the Cathedral tries to open the doors. Across the street: a McDonald's. The world being what it is: catty-corner from the homeless-knoll, a 1920s-inspired steakhouse / tavern called Prohibition serves up cocktails and dishes celebrating an age of dizzying wealth about to be followed by one of abject poverty.

Oh, irony.

There is, as always, a girl-creature in the frame and the girl-creature has worn her combat boots instead of her Alexander McQueen heels, and this is her only concession to the weather. Thigh-high fishnets, a cling-y little red cocktail dress, this old leather coat, shearling lined for warmth but un-fucking-buttoned because: style. Spiked black leather choker around her neck, golden hair a tangled, dancing flag around her head, which is ducked low against the wind. The sign from the Fillmore glows dull in the distance, but there's no show on the schedule tonight and the snow has cut down on the Thursday crowd. Whoever is out is: hurrying.

Hell, she is, too, but she's taking advantage of the walk and smoking one of her clove cigarette. Ash and tobacco and spiked-spiced-sweetness drifting back from her in a cloud.

marlinspike

There is a young girl, thirteen perhaps or fourteen, with light brown skin of a flawless sort, kinky curls the color of soot, and atop the kinky curls a beanie shaped to look like an owl, the flaps which cover her ears. The owl eyes are staring, starveling felt; they peer at Serafíne before the girl does. The girl does just after and her jaw unhinges a little: open-mouthed staring, because Serafíne has that effect on people sometimes, especially the sensitives. The young girl is dressed in a worn coat, not quite warm enough for the weather and judging by a certain bitten-ruddiness to her skin she has been out a little too long.

"Scuse me maam scuse me," she says, and her teeth chatter together a little on the first word give her breathy voice a bit of a waver. She's speaking more loudly than she has to, a shock to the system.

Cold, cold, and people hurrying, but there is a food truck parked on the street regardless; the awning is a cheerful peppermint swirl color, and there is a gigantic Wolf and Three Pigs on top of it as advertisement.

Serafíne

She has that effect even on the oblivious. Doesn't she? The sharp features, the something-arresting, the goddamned way she dresses, nevermind the weather. And then: the everything else, the millon other things, gut-punch, giddy, fall-in-love, fall-in-something brilliance of everything else about her. And lo, listen:

(because she does: listen. to strange girls, and starveling owls and whatever else crosses her path)

"Yeah?" Arrest again. Not precisely stutter-stop but her momentum is cut and then she pulls up short, holds her cigarette a bit out of the way so the stream of smoke unfurls behind her like a flag. This quick little searchlight of a glance.

(Per + Empathy: hello little girl, are you okay?)

Dice: 7 d10 TN5 (3, 4, 4, 5, 6, 8, 8) ( success x 4 ) [Doubling Tens]

marlinspike

"You know the clubs around here, don't you?"

The too too loud voice is bravado, is brashness and determination; to fit in, to make this play she is about to make stick, some desperation wrapped around the yarn - strengthening it; lending to the volume and the sharpness. Serafíne does not look like she listens. If you looked like Serafíne, if you felt like Serafíne, why would you ever listen to anything else, why would you look outside yourself, why would you you're too fucking cool. But she does listen, and sees things people would not expect too. That brashness and determination, yes, and how false it is - but how true the desperation is: how deeply-rooted in panic simmering below the surface. No; not okay.

"I think I've seen you around before." Lie lie lie lie little girl. Little liar. Like that'll give her cred.

Serafíne

And that attention lingers, simmers, sharpens. The quick spread of her mouth, see, juxtaposed one against the other. "Not the nightclubs. I mean, I might end up in one sometimes, but I don't really give a fuck about some goddamned DJ playing about with records, or VIP areas or bottle fucking service. Too many douchebags. The bars, though."

"Anyplace with a live band." Sera's philosophy about Going Out in a nutshell. So, she sees: the lie and the desperation and the bravado around the lie and god who does that look like? how does that seem?

"I might've seen you around, too." Not simply dignifying the lie: endorsing it. Giving it back.
"You wanna grab something to eat? I'm all about food trucks but it's fucking cold. McDonald's or Prohibition?"

marlinspike

To the girl's credit(?) even though she is surprised that she's gotten this far she doesn't act like she's surprised, or perhaps she's just too desperate and just too panicked to wonder at her success. "Cool," to Sera might've seen her around too. She hugs herself and approaches Serafíne direct, hauling herself up from her watchful spot, a furtive glance up and down the street and toward the food truck; the despair grows keener.

She says, "Pro-prohibition would be cool." Because if anybody can get her into such a place it would be Serafíne, right. "So you know the bars but not the nightclubs."

The statement has a queer little ripple to it: like, she was going to ask what the difference between a nightclub and a bar is, then thought better of it.

Serafíne

"Yeah," that little ripple, oh my fucking god, it cracks Sera's too-soft heart ike an egg, all jagged, " - nightclubs, see, are where asshole douchebags go to pick each other up and listen to pre-canned and heavily autotuned and remixed pop while the richest among them lurk behind red velvet ropes. Bars,"

a simple, spreading grin. Sera kinda unhooks her hand from one of those deep (warm) pockets of her and lifts it up like: hey, she's gonna pull-the-girl in, loop an arm around her shoulder. If she'll allow herself to be so pulled-in. " - are like the best living room ever. With booze. Prohibition it is."

--

Up close Sera smells like smoke and cloves and burnt, burning sugar. Like booze and a bit of that musty odor of marijuana and a very slight hint of a very expensive perfume. Leather, and snow. They cross the street to the half-empty cocktail bar / tavern / steakhouse. The sudden blast of warmth, the blissome noise, and no one stops them and no one cards them and the bartender waves a 'seat yourself' sort of gesture.

marlinspike

The girl goes suspicious, alarmed, and a little pleased when Sera goes to loop an arm around the girl's shoulder. Nothing is simple when you're thirteen or fourteen, nothing is simple when you're in trouble and you're doing something you're not supposed to be doing. The girl's nose prickles and she sneezes, but says with a put-on air of wisdom, "Yeah. Autotuned and remixed pop is bullshit, I like it to be vinyl if it's not live." That's the right thing to say, right? maybe. "Douchebags though. I, I mean. Is there a club that is fullest of asshole douchebags?"

Inside the Prohibition the girl goes up on her tiptoes and peers around, hopefully, only to look crestfallen in the next moment. She turns her attention back to Serafíne, "Uuh... so what's your name. I mean, sorry if I heard it I forgot. I got a bad memory sometimes."

Serafíne

"See?" Returns Sera, full of encouragement and camaraderie for all that she herself does not care if it is vinyl but: yes, my child. That is the right answer. You will make some hipster a very fine girlfriend, someday. "You'd fit right in with my housemates. Dan and Rick geek the fuck out over records. Me, I'm not that fucking smart, to remember all that shit they get into."

--

Sera picks out a booth at least one booth away from the next occupied booth and sits. Lets the girl choose her own place: across or beside. Gives her space to make her own decision. Don't we all need space to make our own decisions? And when they are sitting down:

"I'm Sera. What's your name?"

marlinspike

"Heh; cool," to fitting in with Sera's roommates. The girl wants to sit across and she drags off her owl hat as soon as they have, carelessly leaving it on the table. There are little hot pink rhinestone earrings in her lobes, the kind of fake-pink only strawberry dreams are. One of her legs is bouncing up and down up and down and she slouches in a way that only a thirteen or fourteen year old can as she looks around again, peering hard into the corners.

"It's Jaylo, my friends call me Lo-lo. You go on lots of dates right?"

Serafíne

"I wouldn't say I go on alot of dates, precisely. That's a little too fucking specific for me. But I like people and I like going out so sometimes the two things end up happening at the same goddamned time."

There are menus already on the table, tucked between the napkin dispenser and the wall. Sera: pulls out two. Hands one to Lo-lo.

"Why? You waiting to meet someone tonight? You've been looking like you're waiting for someone, you know?"

"No I'm not meeting someone in partickular. I like to keep it loose but I am, like. I guess I'm - "

This while she takes the menu and bends it, folding it so the light ripples over cheap laminate and letting it boing back straight in shape. Jaylo is thinking: fuck fuck fuck what if Ivy is dead what if she is fucking dead this was so so so so so stupid.

" - you know, I just kinda wanna scope out what it's like for. Like do a report on, I mean, you know tinder right? I thought I'd see what it looks like to be on a tinder date, get a laugh or something."

She is annoyed at herself too, over the panic (what if Ivy is dead right now what if she is dying I have her phone what do I do), for messing up her story.

Serafíne

"Tinder sucks. All assholes, see? They just wanna fuck, and not the way you wanna fuck. You know? You gotta be wary of guys who swipe this way for boobs and that way for ass. You're more than that, you know? Dude, I hate that shit.

"But, wait," - sharp skimming look: this infinite edge, the supple thread of: awareness, compassion knotted with a hint of query between her brows. " - where's Ivy? Your friend, right? I'm pretty sure I've seen you together. Were you supposed to meet her?"

(Mind 3/Entropy 1) - that is a totally plausible thing for me to ask, I am awesome AND super trustworthy. Dif 6 -1 (personalized instrument)

marlinspike

Her chest is rising and falling rapidly, her pupils little pinpricks of shock and her hands little claws little talons of hope on the side of the table. No. Not hope; because Serafíne asked where Ivy was, didn't say -

"Yeah I was but girl went to some club I forget the name can't find it in my text messages was hoping to see her, she's got some good dope right now," because yeah, 'good dope' is a reason to be really intensely invested in meeting up with your friend. "Also she's just really cool we're bffs you know." There's some solemnity in the archaic sentence; we're bffs you know.

Because they totally are.

Serafíne

"If you've got her phone, I can probably find her. I mean, that's a big fucking if - "

The cigarette is long gone. The scent clings, though. Her hair, her skin. The smeary brightness of her eyes. The intensity, the tattooed hand on the table: open, open.

" - but if you had it, I bet we could track her down."

marlinspike

Lo-lo gives Serafíne an up-and-down look, skeptical and pure in her skepticism. This is the kind of skepticism that strengthens the Pogrom, makes it necessary for sleight of hand and reasoning.

"You could? What you some kind of cool chick hacker?"

Serafíne

"You know that find-my-iPhone shit?" Blatancy? Fucking blatancy. "Friend of mine created a reverse-loop-up version of it. If someone's had their phone long enough, you can use it to reverse-track them down.

"Doesn't work from any old phone, though. There's some kinda fucking algorithm, right? Some stupid math shit. Takes all the coordinates and even the 'net searches and puts together a pretty-goddamned accurate map 75% of the fucking time."

marlinspike

"That doesn't sound like it's real," Lo-lo insists. Blatancy, or no. Even silver-tongued, Mind-stamped; this is where Lo-lo's particular mind digs its heels in, stands firm: and yet. "That doesn't sound like it's real at all but I guess other shit doesn't sound like it's real too. The Simpsons predickin the president or whatever." She unzips her jacket, sniffing a cold-is-on-its-way sniff broad nostrils flaring, and she has a tiny canary yellow purse tucked against her side there. The canary yellow matches some of the patterns on her knit owl hat. She takes an iphone out of the purse and slides it across the table toward Serafíne, and her eyes have gone big.

Serafíne

"Maybe it's not real," Sera concedes, reaching across the table for the iPhone. Oh, her hands, teh scrim-and-scroll of her tattooes, the flash of her many rings. Somehow the combination of obscure script and spike and sheen seems very much like the edge of an obscured treasure map. See, an edge to her smile then. That skepticism brings out everything in her that refuses it, that will not be contained. And oh: she wants to clash, not with a panicked girl, but with everything and everyone who tells her: no, can't, won't, should, shouldn't. Fuck them. "Maybe it's magick."

And Sera flags down a waitress and turns the iPhone over in her hand and knows enough to slide it on and there's a passcode but she's not a goddamned actual hacker so she keeps it in one hand and picks up her own and orders a round, no wait, two, of tequila shots and she'll let Lo-lo have one of the four, but the other three will belong to her. She takes two in this quick succession, belts them back, licks the salt, bites the limes. Feels that first buzz because fuck -

The third shot she sort of contemplates and keeps close. The 13 year old isn't getting that one. She's allowed: one. If she wants to get drunk she can steal communion wine and get drunk in the sacristy like EVERYONE FUCKING ELSE.

And wild for to hold. [retro]

Serafíne

When when when does Sera ever say: what does this mean, what does this mean, what does this mean. What she says is: how does this feel in my body now, how does this feel against my skin, where is the pain and where is the sensation, what can happen next.

Everything.

Whoever is buried under there, hunter or otherwise, the man who pursues her, the hind she pursues, she wants him whole. She wants him free. She wants them all free, wants to weave a rope out of that golden hair that comes away and she thinks and strains and dreams and focuses and she: keeps spending herself and spending herself in the act of that focusing - pushing more and more of herself into the spell meant to knit together the bleeding ground.

(Extending the Healing Rote.)

Dice: 3 d10 TN6 (2, 9, 9) ( success x 2 )

rose

How real this vision is; how real the certainty that the bones are whole now, are clean, even dirt-packed and lovingly muddied; how real the certainty that the hunter, the man, helpless in his grave beneath the wound-splitting earth (also healing, knitting as if it were flesh; it is the flesh and that is why his blood is seeping through Serafíne's fingers, and we have used the word viscous, but attend carefully, attend carefully to the blood, because it is too thick; it is as something jellied, something preserved) thrashing upwards even as the ground closes.

As Serafíne heals, the visceral signature of her Will like a gulp of vanilla smoke, it gets more difficult to open the ground up because (the king is the land | the land is the king) it wants to close up like a trap, but the gold the ground heals too and the heartbeat kicks up and misses a beat and then another and

(her hands)

stop

the silence pipes into her and for an instant (this is a vision) surely Serafíne can feel, can skim, a sense that she has been scooped into an emptinesss, and within that emptiness there is music beginning, see? And then

there's the heart again. There, her hands make contact through that gold-hair net-rope thing, and she has opened and healed enough to:

find the man. Just there; his face might as well be clay, so caked is it with dark earth, but his lips part and dirt falls onto his tongue as he tries to take a breath, can't open his eyes too much dirt too much dirt too much dirt.

This is a vision.

Serafíne

The heartbeat stops and her breath stops she knows the rhythm and the empty spaces between the rhythm, the lacunae, and maybe she is crying (assuredly she is crying) in those moments of silence when the ground oozes that thick and jellied blood and her breath comes sharper, you understand, for the cessation of things as she digs and

digs and

digs and

digs down through the wounded earth like a diving bell and some part of her must know that this is a vision, but every part of her also knows that it is so very real right now.

Here is his face it is made of clay it is clotted with earth it is formed beneath her hands and she starts to smear away the dirt, to shape and form his face beneath his hands, to empty out his mouth, to breathe to breathe to breathe for him.

"Wake up." Serafíne is saying; she is burning, her voice is burning. "Wake up wake up wake up," she is breathless and full-of-noise, she is urgent and she is needful, "what are you here for. What am I supposed to see."

He is no golem, and there are textures at play as Serafíne smears away the dirt. There, sharp cheekbones; a young face, but weathered (grit and mud and rock and his bones were splintered but now he is candled with the touch of her magick the bloody kiss she pressed through the earth), the twitch of eyelids, a cough and a gasp, and his eyes crack open but mud falls into them. What is he here for? What is she supposed to see? He says a word, but the word becomes a ribbon, and the ribbon wraps around Serafíne's throat. It does not strangle; it merely wraps, feels a little like silked fur. She would know this man if she saw him. She would know him, because when he finally forces his eyes open completely and she sees them, their color is

The ribbon says: There is written, her fair neck round about:

Noli me tangere, for Caesar's I am,And wild for to hold, though I seem tame.

He chokes another word and this one becomes a stone. When the stone hits the ground, frost seres out from the impact, all winter-green and cold and still and sudden and frost touches his hair, and everything green withers.

He says, and this time Sera can hear his voice, a honey smooth voice afraid as anything, "The ground will sever its own arteries unless."

A drumbeat, and

And then the vision is gone, and she is on her knees in the grass with her hands in the dirt and the young woman who yelled at her bent over, hands on her own knees, gazing intently and with angry bee-sting sure concern, and behind the young woman the Nymph still half-loosened from her prison, right? The little lights, burning - no

only one little light burning

and everything stilling. Serafíne can feel the woman's Will at work, the taste of roses and sugar, the sweet after-lingering taste of some candied natural concoction, liquour, oh, sweetest honey. The woman is looking at Serafíne, to see what it is she does. See? Yes.

at my liberty dear [unfinished]

Serafíne

It is hard to know the hour because she has lost hold of time, as she often does. Let go of its raveling strand and ever-so-slightly unmoored herself from its imperatives. Dark because it must be dark, because it is night in a strange city in high summer well to the north and so,

night here does not last long. Still, night comes. The sun does not set until ten and the sky remains illuminated with that strange, sublime light that seems to define Paris for another forty minutes or more before anything like full dark approaches, and come 5:30 a.m. the sky is already getting pale in the east, and the world prepares itself for sunlight again.

So, darkness. Full dark, the seams of the sky all knitted closed, sunset a memory, the city proper on the verge of shut-down, which is a strange thing in a city this size, a city full of such people, but it is also a city full of such spaces as this one. The Tuileries, a garden founded by Catherine de fucking Medici, not that Serafíne has any idea whom she might have been, and refined and expanded and redefined by monarch after monarch until it was opened to the Parisians themselves as a public park, after they decided they were done with monarchs after all, and cut off their goddamned heads in the Place de la Concorde, where the once-royal gates opened onto the public avenue.

Here she is: somewhere in the dark, one of the long avenues shaded by linden trees, which are so strangely, sweetly fragrant this time of year. Seated on the spine of a park bench, her booted feet on the seat, smoking a cigarette, breathing in the steadiness, the strange quiet that is not absolute and feels both permissive and somehow - permeable.

Permeable the way her skin is permeable, the breathing membrane of it.

She's fucked up. Of course she, but the tips of her fingers feel lovely and there's this strange, bittersweet ache in her body that makes her toes curl in on themselves in her boots.

So she takes them off. The boots: pulls back the tongues and loosens the laces and pulls them off and sets them aside and her toes still ache or is that something else?

She hardly knows, Sera.

So she lights another cigarette, and takes another swig from her flask. Which is filled, of all things, with a pear liquer - poire william absurdly sweet but god so delicious.

rêvere

Here she is: somewhere in the dark, somewhere in the twilight has made love to (ravished [enchanted]) Paris and reimagined it in rose and recast it in greens and blues which melt together which pour like syrup into cool shadows and cooler niches and secret places and they're all boundaries and thresholds every planned avenue every pre-plotted arch every city resurrected every time-conquering corner the green and the blue and perhaps the purple leavened by amber-tinged-rose again darkend and darkened but here are the lamps lighting here are the halos kindling candled here she is somewhere in the dark and the dark is breathing, the dark is breathing, the dark is a gloss of oil on water, just reach past the oil, reach past the colors, plunge your fingers through them the world is a picture a painting it floats on the surface of something else go through it go through it and Serafíne she smells watermelon, tangy and sweet, sliding along the bitter taste of her cigarette, a richer tobacco, something strong and untouched by fire, something still leather-shop potent, then that sweet delicacy of pear fermented and the watermelon dissolves; in front of her she can see little fires light in a row of flowers that look almost wild in their little row and in the day they'd be so colorful but tonight in the dark

in the dark they're just guarded, guardianed, by the Nymph and her hound, all cold moonlight and

no she shuts her eyes. That statue; it flicks its eyelids up and looks directly, smoulderingly, at Serafíne who has taken her shoes out; it turns its head. No it doesn't. But there are little candles lit in the flowers; little fires, and nobody, nothing, except a sense of

other.

Serafíne

And Sera, see - she breathes in and she breathes out and she is lingering not-precisely-lost so much as deliberately misplaced and she rests her chin on one hand, that elbow on her bent-knee, the other hand now with the cigarette, now loosed from it as she leaves it hanging from the corner of her mouth and reaches out, undulant, to feel both tethered and free the slick swirl of shadows and light, the boundaries and the tethered places and the places where things become unmoored, and then the cigarette, ash drifting from its tip like snow, well goddamnit she is a smoker.

So she pulls her hand back and plucks the cigarette from the corner of her mouth and watches see, focuses in a manner that is not focus but is still - drawn in, lingering, intent and intense - on the lights, and the Nymph, all glowing-white, all smouldering in the moonlight, the cold solid planes of her body illumined even in this darkness, because the city has its own sort of light, and

moreover,

so does this place.

Sera stands up, on the seat of the elegant metal bench, and ignores the boots she tugged off and feels the cool metal beneath her fishnetted toes and stares at the nymph, mouth open, cigarette forgotten again, this time between her fingers, and tongues the bow in her mouth and jumps - elegant, see? - down from the park bench, body folding into itself to subsume the impact, and steps, so neatly, from the dusty path onto the forbidden glance.

That look.

That otherness.

How can she resist?

The grass prickles (goat-teeth nibbled it down but it grows verdant in the summer verdant and fortunate and absinthe wishes to be so green or it wishes to be as green as absinthe) against her toes against her heels but does not reach for her ankles and it is dark and there is no one to come suddenly and irrevocably to say to her Serafíne no the grass is forbiden; the Nymph does not move (again?) though Serafíne is drawn near her and those little burning ghost lights among the flowers, static fireflies, still fireflies, what a lovely light they give! but ah, will not last the night (they're a gasp, see, quickening in the throat, they're a visual gasp a visual catch of sound - ) and the little dog with his mouth open that the Nymph watches (usually) so lovingly tenderly with such tender amusement (yes that's it) licks his chops and shivers closer to the nude's calf and looks at Serafíne

and is there a hush? Every city has its tone; every city has its quiet in the dark which is never as quiet as we mean the word to be. But it is hushed now; a moment between, no murmur of people, no river, no gutter, no distant vehicles, nothing that is not grass bending crushing beneath Serafíne's feet catching on her stockings

and the statue; other; threshold;

antique. The night is a veneer; the night has not yet dried; smear it.

Serafíne

Her breath catches in her throat or her throat catches her breath and she smokes the last of the cigarette and does not quite will it out but out it goes, smoke all crackle-hot, burnt-sugar in her lungs and the remnants tossed because, well, she is not always a good citizen, our Serafíne.

And she is freed then, by which we mean both hands free as she picks her way over the grass between the rows of half-illumined flowers in that moment

between

everything, and does she notice it? Oh she notices and that notices becomes part of the ache in the cage of her chest, the way it corkscrews through her half-drunk body, the way she wants to

smear it,

just this scrawl of her tattooed hands through the pigment, pulling the light in shoot-star arcs behind her.

What she does, though, is two-fold. A slewing, a skewing of her senses; a stutterstop of awareness as she bites the inside of her cheek and both: reaches in and lets go. Finds the now in the everywhen and the everywhen in the now. Everything is now. Everything always has been.

That is thing-one, the spell of seeking and sensing and seeing and knowing.

This is thing-two: glancing up at the Nymph, Sera reaches out to pet the dog.

Serafíne is a mage.

Serafíne is, yes, many things, many things which sound more elusive, which are more textured, many-textured, Serafíne is visceral, is enthralling, is liminal, Serafíne is a mage and as often as she untethers herself unmoors herself looses her mind re-examines corners and unseams them she is still a mage, she is still a thing whose Will does consciously control and force reality into a shape, and she believes things in an under-the-skin sort of way about that, but she is a mage, she knows in that under-the-skin sort of way what goes into the world what the instruments of it are what makes the sounds although perhaps she doesn't think of it in those terms (or did one summer and will again on a winter's day and then one other time in autumn and never somehow in spring), but this is true

that when she performs her spell of seeking and sensing and seeing and knowing she knows and sees that what is happening here is not the work of another Magi it is too slippery too slanted too old too timeless it does not want to be timed it will not be timed it looses those bonds it escapes them and is untouched it is other

The hound, the hound, the nymph and the hound and the hound so wet beneath her hand and her tongue against her teeth, the word she cannot remember dissolving there, all lozenge, a hint of chalk, something effervescent and constricting all at once. Something struggling-through,

mutemute mute

and that silence makes her throat close, makes her tongue ache, makes it so difficult for her to hum the nameless three notes that create a chord that bring her into accord that join their minds that bring them close, close, finely closer -

and she weaves those notes into the next and the next, pulls them into the moment, and time, she takes her time, she takes whatever goddamned time she requires.

What are you? Are you trapped.

Are you trying to get-free.

Serafíne

Oh, oh, oh. Her thoughts slow, go still see - arrested, marble, stone, cool as moonlight and far less mercurial - there is a question and that which surrounds the question and she is cool, she is cold, she remembers the night and it is always night, it is always now, it is always here. She would like to hunt, Sera, she would like to bathe in the flowers and kindle the flame and find her liberty and everything, everything else. She would like to step down - naked - from her marble plinth and feel the curl of her little dog's head in the curve of her palm and sink, and sink, and sink through the grass-green sea and shake herself free of the egg all shelled around her and slide off into the dark dark dark wood, which is not a wood but which she remembers as a wood, a strange wood threaded with light, but a wood, a wood nonetheless.

There is, see: a ???? insinuant and there is, also see, a !!! and there is, beneath and around ????!!!! a need, a desire, a want that carves through and focuses the wandering ache in her chest into something sharp and something piercing and oh! you see, she hardly knows that this is her heart.

Yes, she says, Sera, yes yes yes which means exactly what she means it to say. There is a new thread of magic in her, a new desire, a new movement, a new focus of her Will, coalescing around a point of awareness and a point of being and a certain note that gets caught - static - in the back of her throat. The pain of that stasis and the memory of what it means to feel time, see, passing.

She wants to hunt. She wants to free. She wants to unstitch the threads that keep the Nymph and her little dog in this moment forever and give them back to the now. To incise that mind from that marble, and Set It Free.

And so, she starts, to Work.

Climbs up onto the marble plinth and slides her cheek against the Nymph's cheek, her own breath warm on the cool cool stone, her lashes low, her awareness sinking-sharp, brow to brow, nose to nose, lashes to eyelashes, cheek to cheek, she Works.

--

[So: ritual, I am thinking a combination of Mind 3 / Prime 2 / Time 3 for what she intends to do, which is unstitch the Nymph / dog from the statue (Mind 3 / Prime 2 and then the Time 3 to give her back her sense of time - the idea being that the time will help pull her out of marble stasis right? anyway. That is what Sera will try. I will roll later but I figure it will take a while.]

and Serafíne begins her ritual

her impromptu unthreading, her unstitching, her unbinding, and the Nymph is not shaped so neat as to be easy for a diminutive woman like Serafíne to place her cheek against, her hand is in the way, her hound, her breast is nearer, all moon-scalded stone that she is now, that she is not, because she is something within the stone, isn't she, isn't that what Serafíne who can enthrall [but enthralling is the opposite of un-thralling] who is an enchantress who is

yes whenever she breathes in she can smell that and a hint of summer and

it is difficult what she is doing: very difficult indeed, undoing a binding that is a pact that is a compact that is older than older than old than archaic (though the statue cannot be older than the Napoleonic Era, than Paris-reimagined and resurrected, the thing within it is)

time sloshes, time splashes, time unspools; Serafíne can feel that time unspools but she can also feel the brush of fur against her leg dappled cool as a river cool as the shiver of wind across grass and if she looks down the little hound is no longer there or is there but is, to her sight, transparent, a husk, and there is something in the grass

the nymph though, the nymph:

it is hard going; it is like, one-handed, trying to drag a water-logged body from a rapid, she is being tugged away, tugged away

and on the path of this garden someone yells (in French):

The ritual is a half-remembered song, a chord stuck in her throat, a call to now, to movement, to moonlight, to the hunt. The ritual is Artemis-in-moonlight, the swift and silent passage of her hunt through dark streets, strangers sleeping unaware, all around. The ritual is not cheek-to-cheek, perhaps, Serafíne without her heels and accessories is a slight creature and it is all she can do to balance on the plint, near-bare toes (torn fishnets - her boots left behind on the bench) splayed over the carved and weathered stone, but is, assuredly, skin-to-marble-as-skin.

And the ritual is drowning, is spooling, is un-spooling. Is making some new compact and unmaking something ancient, something far, far older than this neo-classical piece, something so neatly and finely stitched into the substance of the place and the stone and the form that Sera has the distinct impression that her fingers themselves are raw and bleeding from the work. Will have that distinct impression when she can think about anything but the stone and the work and the need to hunt and the implacable stasis of the sculpture - living? half-life? what does one name such an existance - conspire altogether to a -

she doesn't know, she doesn't know, she doesn't anything except now and was and want and ache and the song, the song, everything she weaves into the promise of it, sunk as she is in the nymph's strange and static mind when -

The startled jerk of her head. Someone's close. Someone's voice. She doesn't know and she looks around for the source of the yell and finds it and entreats - entreats - all in English: "Help me. Help me get her down. She doesn't like this pedestal."

Someone's close. Someone's voice. Someone's on the path looking hard at Serafíne, someone whose eyes are a deep brown the kind of brown that has orange glints in it like an ember or like that glow of polished wood in certain dusks. Someone's on the path looking hard at Serafíne, alarmed, and that someone's still using French, even after Serafíne speaks to her in English, a stream of French, a torrent of French, the clearest thing about it being that she wants Serafíne to get away, get away, get away from the statue right now, away from the nymph and the hound who Serafíne is aware of as ghosting about the plinth and slinking into the flowers where the candles are. The someone who is a girl looks at the candles -- they aren't real candles; little ghost lights -- burning above the flowers and her eyes widen and she says again something more vehement than before and looking both ways starts across the grass.

And Serafíne can feel that the girl is washed in resonance, much of it centered on something that is of her but also without her, something tucked away (the heart, the core) under her blouse and her open broad-collared jacket, and it feels like an antique candy dissolving on the tongue, like the taste of roses, all bolstered up by something implaccable intractable rigid and unyielding not relentless because this shares something with the idea of

stone and

forever.

Now, the nymph is still being unstitched, isn't she? If Serafíne looks, can she see the nymph's hand lower, just a bit, almost brush her shoulder, reaching for her hound? But no, there was no movement. (But yes, there was.)

Oh, something bright and old and molten-sweet. Something still and endless and unchanging and briefly, briefly, eternally Serafíne is captured by the sensation of the stranger's resonance, her own eyes dark in the moonlight, dark in the midnight, dark from her fucking pupils, which even in the darkness are far-too-dilated in one of those goddamned universal signs that she is On Something, because she is On Something and probably more than one-thing, and dark with a sort of arrested passion, which started as a sort of sinking-whim folded itself quite neatly into something that is

nothing like stone (gutwrenching)

and forever only because every moment is now, when she stands: in the doorway, on the threshold, at the verge of -

--

She's turning, Sera, edged, perched so precariously on the marble plinth, chary of holding-on to the nymph the way one holds on to solid things made-of-stone because the nymph is not made-of-stone, because beneath the stone she is -

One leg twisting and the other crossing behind it and sliding her hands down the marble curves and reaching for a marbled hand see, as if to say: come, come, come, stay with me, when her left heel slips and then her right foot and then everything is like an avalanche and she falls, and she falls hard all the way to the ground and cannot keep her hand on the nymph and cannot even find purchase on the ground: just falls.

Just impacts.

(Ouch.)

And the stranger is still talking in a torrent of French and Sera probably has tears in her eyes because she's not stopping and she's not helping and how would you like to be suspended, half-sensate, yearning -

"I don't understand," to the stranger, to the girl. Then: Spanish: "No comprendo - see? I don't understand you don't understand, they were supposed to move. They were made to be in motion. I don't understand."

The marble fingers moon-drenched moon-blanched tighten on Serafíne's as she falls as she falls down to the grass to sharp corners those fingers they do try to tighten on Serafíne's fingers grasping for her own but they can't. Serafíne is left with an impression of stone, mobile, living, reaching -- and then she is separate; then she is separated. Then the impact is thrilling through her bones and flesh and muscles and shaking her beating on her as if she were a tambourine calling up ghosts calling up the people calling up the dancers calling up calling up and it all goes still but she is hardier than she looks, Sera, and when she stands, the girl has reached her, the girl whose resonance is the taste of rose, the sugar dissolution of rose spun-fine and saliva-unmade and yes eternity stolid staying, and the match-strike of alarm in the girl's eyes fades to anger, has quickened into fury, and she looks as if she is going to strike Serafíne at first.

Spanish. She can speak Spanish with an accent, some words want to stay French.

"You need to get away from here right now or you are in danger, you stupid. Come with me. Come with me right now," and she reaches to take Sera's arm and haul her from the grass, back onto the path, casting one baleful glance at the statue.

And one of the dancing (eerie, ghostly) lights above the flowers; it goes out. A breeze has combed across the gardens and it is cold, cold, cold, as cold as a knife-tip pressed against a living breast, intent, the moment before it is

thrust in. The moment before it has leeched warmth; has let warmth flee forever.

Serafíne

Sera is scrambling upright, scrambling to-her-feet, scrambling to gain: traction, altitude. You know, I mean: she just fell, on her ass from a height, all breath-knocked out and you cannot be a girl like Sera without falling, and falling regularly, and falling from heights like a goddamned pro - drunk or swooning or passing out or puking or just those goddamned shoes she wears so much, they were not made for human feet. You cannot be a girl like Sera without falling, so she takes falling in stride, manages, (almost) the art of both falling-and-reaching-out, which is a strange one but one she knows the way she knows her heartbeat, the way she knows her eyeteeth, the way she knows all of her wanton desires, the way they beat like a drum inside of her, like a heartbeat which is not, like most heartbeats, want/notwant; but which is merely, endlessly: want/want want/want want/want.

"No." says Sera, then - "No." jerking her arm away from the girl, a little bit angry, a little bit longing, and her fingertips still feel somehow abraded though she knows that is a sense-memory that is little more than the lingering resonance and perhaps the push-back of reality, the world's need to stay within the boundaries we have given it, but fuck-you world, fuck-you, fuck-you, isn't that what magic is: I don't like the way things are: so change, so -

Serafíne does jerk her arm away from the stranger as she pulls herself up to her knees and then maybe her feet, backing up protectively against the statue at which the stranger is flashing such baleful looks. Jerks her arm and glances back at the nymph and then at the girl and then the wind comes, and Sera catches her breath,

shivers.

"That's not right." Spanish, this. "That's not fair, you can't leave her in there. She should be bathing in the flowers, she should hunt hunt hunt. Nothing was made to be that still. No thinking-thing."

nymphe

"Who do you think she'll hunt?" the girl says, "Who? Come away from there; come away from there now. What gives you the right to come here and undo what others have done; others who have to live here? Come away from there now!" - anger, mounting, leavened by a note of beseeching at the end.

Where is the hound?

The marble is cold and hard against Serafíne's back; behind the girl who has come the garden is beginning to smear. Already dark, already darkest, now in Serafíne's eyes there is a certain slanting thumbprint waver to the darkness which has become a greenness which smells of linseed oil which is a vision which is not at all real which is in her head which is a vision of

The marble plinth is gone. It is just Serafíne and the girl and there are no lights in the garden and the garden is green. The garden is paint. The girl does not look angry; the girl is reaching for her collar, reaching for a zipper, but the zipper is in her skin and she says in whatever language Serafíne thinks in,

Will you unzip me?

and there is an unthinking and casual sensuality about the question; about the trusting gesture as the girl (it is the same girl, this girl in her vision which has taken her over, which has swarmed up out of the garden) takes a step forward to offer the zipper in her skin.

Consternation. Her breath comes hard and her heart is beating, beating, oh it pains her and Sera there with her back against the cold marble watching as the nightwarps, as her vision changes, as the girl turns around to offer the zupper-in-her-skin, Sera breathes out once and hard as if she had been kicked somewhere in the center of her body and stares openly at the girl, the stranger, the vision, the night turning to darkness-to-green-to-paint, the heavy impressionist imprint of the brushwork in the oils, the mark of the author's hand.

"I don't know - " is there something imploring about Sera's processed ignorance? There is a coiling passion all writ into the words. "I don't know, I don't know if I should trust you, I don't see how you can know about her and leave her there. And I think she'll hunt the moonlight on water and the sound of a rose when the first petals unfurl, I think she'll hunt the flavor of a bruised twilight and the last note of the last song of the last bird of evening and the first bird of dawn and -

" - what are you doing. What are you doing."

In this vision, this moment out of time, this moment all linseed oil and age, all little fly-droppings along the edges which look like holes, dark clusters of tiny pinpricks and impossible to clean off without high-powered lazers, all green swirling away into ghastly ghostly yellows and the blacks are and she knows or she saw the painting the garden has turned into the haze that wraps around them both

and the girl in the vision who is the same girl

she is doing nothing; but something is waiting behind the zipper, under her skin, something is exhaling - something is ready to be unlocked

as soon as that zipper is drawn down

something that is not-of her.

The girl; oh, unquestionably: she knows about the nymph in the statue and the nymph's little hound and unquestionably, unquestionably, she is involved, intimate with the affair as it continues on, if not with its birthing; oh, unquestionably - look at how she approached, listen to the tone of her voice even when it was naught but liquid syllables in a language Serafíne does not know - unquestionably she knows; doesn't care at all for the nymph;

forever, forever; it's such a long time; stay imprisoned.

And, unquestionably, she believes that she is implying: that the nymph will hunt people like herself and Serafíne or others -- innocents; sleepers.

Both are true. Both seem true.

The vision-of-the-girl shrugs and begins to pull the zipper down, but it is hard going, it seems to be stuck.

And Serafíne can hear the girl saying something to her, but not what that something is; the vision-of-the-girl's mouth does not move.

Serafíne

Oh, there is a note of something thoughtful - not considerate precisely, and perhaps a bit querulous, by which we mean: full of confused (AND MILDLY DISGRUNTLED) query, and Sera is caught between her sense of the girl's certainty and her vision of the girl's unzippering, the thing inside that is not of her, the pieces that shift and change, and Sera is not moving, except - you see - to stand protectively between the statue and the stranger, her spine sharp, her skin all crawling-keen, her awareness etched and edged with varying degrees of watchfulness and wariness and awareness and compassion all of which cut through her sharp as swords -

"How do you know that. Is it just something someone put inside you? What if you're wrong and I'm right, and you you're keeping her here forever and ever because you cannot take it on yourself to ask and ask and ask yourself what would it be like to be trapped in forever."

nymphe

[paused for now!]

The vision, perhaps outside the warp and weft of time, beyond its loom, a suspicion of pattern - the vision: it encompasses all of Serafíne's awareness as she speaks, confused and disgruntled, caught betwen (of course, liminal darling, you are caught between, held between, like a tongue set against teeth) the girl's certainty and this vision. This, the vision, which becomes total: which becomes the girl finally getting the zipper, shreds of flesh torn and ragged, the zipper-teeth crawling like sinuous bisected scorpion bellies split by lightning, and out of the hole in her chest comes a profusion of dark-winged things - they are shadows, perhaps, they are time, they are coal-smoke wings and gas-lamp poisons, they are time, they are iron and they are heavy, they are unbreathable skin-spoiling silent traps, they are airs made uneasy, they are dragging caught sparks of fire behind them; the winged things are around Serafíne; they sound like bats in a cave; they are humid, they are contagion, they breathe on her and whisper things in a myriad of languages - they sound unhappy; little hands. Through them the surreal impressionist strokes of green and black and gold become ever-gloomier, ever more tinted, as if she is looking at a painted world through the bottom of a bottle -

and then they are gone. The girl is gone. This is a vision; what is her body doing? How does one get back to one's body when one is having a vision?

The ground has begun to peel apart, like a wound not-quite-heeled picked at by childish fingers: they don't know better.

The ground begins to bleed, it moans as it does.

The park is a painting; Serafíne is in a painting-of-a-park; where is the girl and the nymph and the hound? They are not inside this vision any longer.

Serafíne

Serafíne spins in a sparkling arc of motion, reaching reaching reaching for the girl in the vision as she continues to peel back that zipper, when it shreds her flesh there is an answering hiss of responsive awareness, of empathic pain, oh Sera can feel the bite of those teeth into her own skin, all the strange, dark-winged things that live inside us all, that beat their wings against our rib cages, that haunt and haunt and haunt and make four a.m. a wasteland and morning an unwelcome haunt and inhabit the bile in our throat -

and here come the shadows, the assault of them and she doesn't know that the vision is total and the nymph and her little dog are gone, just that they are maybe behind her and she opens her arms like she might shield whatever is behind her from whatever is in front but it all comes anyway, the great dark sweep of them, sparking fire in moving arcs behind them, singeing, perhaps, her own skin, and she's saying "Stop!" or "Don't!" or what, she hardly knows, turning around to look for the nymph in the aftermath, when the night starts to sweep itself into heavy, gloomy brushstrokes of black and gold,

but the nymph is gone,

and the dog,

and the girl, too.

The ground has started to bleed. Sera crouches down by the wound, puts her hand over the center of it, as if she might staunch the bleeding, as if she might hold the ragged edges together with the pressure of her hand.

"Is anybody out there?"

She asks. It is not precisely a plaint but there is a note in there, a rising note that does not fall.

For there is a person, male, in poor health, bones that are splintering and bones that are not bones so she does not quite read, just under the ground, under the wound, frantic: it is his heartbeat that is want|want want|want want|wanting like a fever ascending toward death he just wants to be free (as the nymph wants to be free although this young man he is under the dirt; he is choking on it and clawing at it; he is no timeless thing, but a thing soon without time)

Serafíne

I want I want I want I do not want except Serafíne always wants, that is how she experiences the world. The pound of the heartbeat beneath her skin, the opening of her body, her pores, the loosening of boundaries, the elasticity of her consciousness, we are everywhere, she is everything, she is nothing, she is neverwhen, she is everywhen, she is right fucking now and she is holding the wound closed with her hands not frantic until she feels that from the stranger undergrown, chocking on the ground, bleeding and she's on her knees, when did that happen? On her knees and making a noise in the back of her throat, no longer struggling to hold the wound in the ground closed but to open it up, to unbury the young man, to heal his shattering bones.

This is how:by kissing the blood pouring from the ground.

The blood is viscous on her lips, is slippery, vaguely metallic, is not at all thin but is not sick-thick either; it is just blood, real, raw, butcher-shop iron

and the ground seems to be full of fine filaments of gold

which Serafíne will notice, pulling apart that ground-wound, kissing it, when a strand of gold clings to her lip that oh it is hair, it is somebody's improbable, impossible hair, a net to keep whatever's beneath down forever

and it is a good start. Bones have not been healed yet; but it is a good start, indeed.

This is a vision; what does it mean? There are no wolves in the vision; only this, gold net of hair, as fine as decorations on a medieval painting, as the faint marks in palimpsest.

Perhaps Alexander's day is about to take a turn for the better. Perhaps Alexander's day is going to live-up to the promise of that frigid blue gorgeous sky up above and its scattering, smattering of pale clouds. Perhaps Alexander's day cannot get any worse, but then, he has not actually been hit by a truck, and the way he's lingering in this place of ill-luck, of mal-fortune, investigating strange things that might be better left un-investigated, let's just say getting hit by a truck is not yet off the table.

This is: a sparse stretch of road -- empty, emptying, not flat because the Rockies are right there, solemn sentinels all dressed in white all cold and cold and cold.

Perhaps Alexander's day is about to take a turn for the better. There is a hair-thin crack in the air, suspended there, un-moving, like a filament of hair except hair would be blown away, hair wouldn't gleam occasionally quite like that, wouldn't feel like a break. And he throws a rock at it.

He almost misses the fissure in the air over the street. Maybe because the finger of one hand is broken and even if he's using his other hand that kind of thing distracts one. Maybe because he just survived something very strange, because he went rolling off've his motorcycle. Alexander just isn't tip-top. Almost misses it.

But he doesn't miss it. The rock hits the crack and never hits the ground again. What rock? The owl hobbles on, making a keening noise.

Meanwhile, somewhere nearby, Serafíne…

ill-luck

It's a lovely day, a thaw-day between snow and ice and snow and ice and snow and ice, and Serafíne has perhaps had another dream. A dream about an alcove on a cave's face, on a cliff face, an alcove where there is an altar, an altar with a lid that could be pushed ajar, where an iguana's teeth are vicious-blooded, full of love; a dream about a storm, lightning. And Serafíne, perhaps Serafíne met a woman this day named Natalee, a woman named Natalee who is a musician and who has very dark hair, and Natalee and Serafíne went on an adventure, and the adventure took them out and out and out again, on one of the easier hikes around Denver, because when you're outside of the city, when you're outside of the city Natalee said, you can forget about language right and the trees will begin to melt the hills lose their shape because you've gone past their names, and it's just fucking beautiful, fucking beautiful, beautiful

and that happened. And there is a truck, somewhere, parked oh a ways away from where Alexander is currently standing, dumbfounded, testing his own luck in a most dangerous way, and Natalee is sleeping it off in that truck, a bottle of tequila (perhaps Sera's bottle of tequila?) tucked under the crook of her arm, a cooler full of tamales and grape hummus and Himalayan food and one lonely slice of pizza in the back of the truck, and . . .

Serafíne was in the truck or just outside the truck when she felt the surge of somebody Working, in a Big, Big, Big, Big way, somebody freezing (Frozen?) the world, somebody sending out a coruscating wave of -- oh, it is her Sphere, Time, Time being un-tocked, un-ticked, and there's something even yet behind this Big, Big, Big, Big thing, this uncontrolled somebody-is-there and somebody-has-worked near-by and there is no taste to the resonance yet (perhaps it is beginning, though: that taste, this First Working), and it is wild. Wild Magick. Isn't stopping.

Serafíne

This lonely road this azure sky this strange stretch of land no one should ever really remember to remember, which Alexander is likely never to forget and there is a fork there is always a fork this is what happens with roads: they cross. There are boundaries. There are choices to be made and the choices open up up up and branch out endlessly fractal, fractally endless, and every river leads eventually to the sea.

The pick-up truck where Natalee sleeps is parked over a rise and down a gully; it is not visible from here and the road on which it is parked is gravel and dirt; rutted, half-forgotten except remembered by those who know it to be a choice they can make: just here.

So Sera's walking and out here she's wearing her Doc Martens, beaten and wellworn, not her usual ridiculous heels, so she is not even five and a half-feet tall, a slight figure cresting a slight rise and just a tiny bit surreal; nothing quite like the surreality of Alexandar down below now - awakening, see? - and perhaps hardly noticeable to him but oh, she can taste that wildness on her tongue, against the back of her throat, the ozone promise of it, and she doesn't quite believe her senses, except she always sort of does, even if right now tequila and the remnants of that mushroom tea she-and-Natalee drank hours ago to welcome the dawn or what the fuck ever that star was, rising in the east are unspooling through her body like whoa.

So, what Sera sees among other things is Seattle Alexander, who works security in the city, and a wrecked motorcycle and a wounded owl and - and - and -

Sera licks her dry lips. She's wearing denim shorts over fishnets, a black cotton halter top as if it weren't fucking winter, which is printed with a skull and a school and an alligator, because why the fuck not, and a flannel tied around her waist, and a blanket slung over her shoulders like a refugee from Woodstock, Original Recipe.

She sees all'a that shit unfolding beneath her, and she bites her tongue.

Hard. The sharp burst of pain incisive as a knife through her skull. A burst of brilliance.

As bad days go, today is certainly ranking up there. Maybe not quite number one yet: that honour goes... well, thankfully everything else that’s going on distracts Alexander from that. Perhaps he should be thankful for that small mercy, even if he is going to be black and blue for the next week recovering.

The rock he throws sails through the air and... disappears. No clatter and skitter as it lands back on the road and bounces away to the side. No explosion, no cloud of dust. Just... Nothing. That doesn’t happen. But is any of this meant to happen to a nice boy from Seattle? Did he just happen to be walking past as Chance stuck a pin in a map somewhere and decided who was going to wake up? Or is this part of some big plan of the universe.

Such philosophical questions have never really struck Alexander much in the past. Life and the universe simple are, and the only purpose in life is to survive and, if you’re lucky, make it a better place when you leave it.

Which doesn’t really help explain just what the hell is going on here. The crack floats in the air, calling to him. That too-sweet call of his name sounding just wrong enough to damped down Alexander’s usual sense of curiosity. He just has a feeling that this is... well, wrong. He back away, looking towards the owl. The keening could be from the poor thing’s injuries, or it could be picking up on the fissure. Or there could be some new calamity just waiting to prove that things can, indeed, get worse. He does, however, ask again warily: “Who are you?” To the fissure. To the other voice. To whoever will answer.

Alexander appears to be in an ongoing relationship with Cursing Himself with Ill-Luck, Mis-Fortune, Missed Fortune, Malefaction, Malediction, and he is chained-up and bound-by and dragging-behind a knot of Bad Luck (Entropy: All Things Break, All Things Fall Apart, All Things Are Sundered, All Things, All Things, All Things), but Alexander also has Time's Blood on his hands still, his eyes are shining gleaming with black and white threads of possibilities this-or-that, but he's not at least doing Time Things Any Longer, that's just something she is Aware recently happened. He's just cursing himself, sure. He's just starting to gather those threads of Ill-Luck together, and perhaps Serafíne gets a sense of Curiousity, it's too soon to tell -- the Signature is Changing, Shifting, Won't be Steady Yet, oh but look, Alexander's eyes are burning when she watches how one does magick with something else, so he can see what Serafíne can't, look through the Gauntlet (but not through even in his accident-trip-mode he doesn't know enough or maybe it's not his eyes it's his ears yes his ears) his ears he's Spirit-slinging, Spirit-sensing, beginning to build up like a fire that's going to collapse again, a lesser explosion compared to Time Time Time, the little ebb-wave that comes after. A rock very similar to the one that Alexander threw at the fissure, which did not fall to earth, hits Alexander in the forehead. Did it fall from the sky; did it get thrown from - ?

Either way, it didn't actually do any damage.

Serafíne

One of the oh-so-many things that Alexander feels is Sera though how can he know it is her; or even quite get that she's there cresting a rise and sliding down the slope and then scrambling her way back up to the berm. Just movement in his periphery that could perhaps be as surreal as everything else here: the fissure in the sky, the thrown-back rock. The whole of it on a lonely road in a strange place bounded by the teeth of the Rockies to the west.

That lick of sensation, see, that buffets against his senses is gut-wrenching, right? all instinct-not-thought, back-of-the-gritting-teeth, this visceral twist of - yeah, and fascinating; thralling, enthralling, this catch of the breath to go with the twist of the gut; and she is also, see: thresholds, porticos, doorways. She is the point of becoming where the old is lost and the new is not-yet-defined enough to have begun. She is the place-between, just on the verge of -

- like he is now. Here and now. On the verge of so fucking much, the universe a cresting wave all around him and here's a girl at the edge of his senses, sliding up and down and up again those little rises, see? like she's cresting some fucking wave, this plaid picnic-blanket sort of thing held around her shoulders and flying out behind her a bit like a cape because these are the plains, the high plains, and the wind is always, always,

always.

"Hey. Hey." Girl on the road now; maybe he remembers her from the night before, or the night before that. She's certainly distinctive. Striking; aquiline features and close-set eyes and the sort of face and style you cannot quite forget. Long blond curls all windwhipped except from her right temple all the way back to her neck, where everything from a sidepart down has been shaved back to a soft, downy fringe.

She's smiling. She's watching him. "Seattle Alexander. Did you open the fucking Gauntlet? Jesus Christ."

She has a bottle of something in her hand.

"You're gonna be okay, you know that?" God, she's lovely. "You just have to ride this through. I'm gonna give you a hand."

Alexander Brandt

That voice, so sweet that it’s so hard to resist. Calling. Familiar? No, that was the other voice, the one that seems to have fallen silent. But it would be so easy to take a step towards the fissure, then another. Keep walking towards it until whatever happens... happens. But there’s still that slight, nagging feeling of wrong – the feeling of hairs standing up on the back of his neck that keeps Alexander back. Not retreating, but not advancing either.

The sweet voice speaks again, though, answers that aren’t. Vague sentences that don’t actually explain much. It knows him, but he doesn’t recognise it at all. Has it been watching him? Wait, it? What the hell is it? Are we now thinking that what’s going on now is real?

“Ow, fuck!” The rock certainly felt real.

He steps back a little, looking around for the source of the rock. The fissure? The owl? “I don’t know you. I’ve never heard you before, and I have no idea how you know my name. And you still haven’t answered my question: Who. Are. You?” Each of those last three words getting louder, almost shouting as much as his hoarse voice allow.

Is that a little of the earlier anger coming back, at someone apparently playing games with him? This is really not the day to try it.

He starts at the new voice, almost reluctant to turn away that voice, so hard to resist. But the sensation, the resonance that preceded it was so familiar. Only a night of two ago he felt the same, bring life and atmosphere into an otherwise dying night. Only this time it’s so much stronger that it’s almost hard to imagine it ever being absent. He sees Sera standing, watching. Emotions play over his face as he looks at her. Somewhere between anger, panic, pain, and plain old desperation he says quietly, “I don’t understand.”

Serafíne

"'Course you don't - " Sera's inhaling now. She's gained the berm and the scramble is gone; she's just on her feet now; all surreal and stoned and the brilliant sky and these deep rich shadows; tracers like everything is edged in firecrackers, like there's the possibility of combustion just born and folded into everywhere, everywhen, everything, infecting her vision, and this little shrug beneath the picnic blanket, rather narrow shoulders in a rather sundering, surrendering gesture.

And she's walking toward him carefully because she can see the threads of magic all coruscant around him; can see his scrabbling injuries too. Can see the keening owl with its broken wing and her path and Alexander and his pain and his panic and his desperation and she's careful of the owl and she's careful of him too, her voice soothing, her eyes steady even as she sinks to a crouch beside the wounded bird, a handful of feet from the man who has - who is - cursing himself. "No one every really does, and some of us never fucking figure it out."

And Sera, she makes this sort of nictating noise in the back of her throat; this crooning to touch the keening, this quiet lick of look-at-me though it isn't for Alexander, not right now, it's for that wounded, keening bird. A song-beneath-her-breath and a song-beneath-her-skin and Alexander can hear one and feel the other as she settles balanced on her haunches, the diamonds of her fishnets pulling taut over her thighs.

"That's okay, too. Why don't you tell me what they're saying?"

And still humming see, keening on her own beneath her breath, crooning to that bird, she clarifies,

"The people you're talking to right now? I can't fucking hear them. I know fuck-all about things on the other side."

As Serafíne crouches beside the owl, the owl - initially, at least - makes this sharp, hideous crack-cry, like perhaps that's the sound which lets the Devil out've the underworld, hobby thing, tries to puff up and look very large indeed, but then Sera's humming seems to be working, music soothes the savage beast, hm? and it calms down, lidding its eyes, and if a bird's inexpressive features could express - well perhaps it is tired. It stops trying to get where-ever it is trying to get.

Alexander Brandt

Alexander watches, edging around to keep the fissure, the owl and Sera in view. Too much strangeness to really trust in someone he’s only briefly met. How can she know what’s going on, though? How... can she seem to calm down the owl with so little effort? Just good with animals? Or is there even more going on now that there was before?

He keeps the fissure between him and Sera. Not much of a barrier in case anything much happens, but it’s about all there is in the middle of nowhere. The roulette ball of emotions running over his face seems to land on “wary” for a few seconds before bounding on again.

“You... can’t hear them? “ He sighs, then turns away muttering to himself. “Oh god, that’s it, I’ve really lost it. I’m hearing voices.” He swings back round, voice almost toneless, almost at the point of giving up. “What does it matter what they say? None of this is real.” Alexander’s shoulders sag and he sinks to the ground, hugging his legs. Chin propped on his knees, he just stares at the road.

"You're waking up," Sera says very simply. She is still settled on her haunches on the shoulder of the road, and the owl is no longer keening, no longer trying to scrabble away, and her eyes are sunset eyes, just now, the gleam of the sun across a failing blue horizon as she lifts her chin and glances sharply up at him. Edged see, and keen but and fucked up but really rather calm. Smiling.

On the verge -

"Everything's real if you Will it to be. You're fucking magic."

And see, Sera is not a lover-of-animals. There are no collections of living things fucked away in her home; not even a single ferret and her only occasional pet is a threadbare stuffed bunny that is only ever alive in her dreams but see her hands sort-of-hover over the wounded bird and she drops her eyes from Alexander long enough to focus on it; scattered, scattering; and oh god the way the light splits itself and splits itself and splits itself into infinity. Sera does not believe in molecules but she does believe in everything; the strangely knotted connections. She believes in light and she believes in touch and she believes in her body and also in her soul or whatever you fucking call it. The thing inside her skin, that was meant to burn.

The owl is calm in Serafíne's presence; is calm, but is still, after all, an animal. A bird. And it is far, far from its den, and as Serafíne Wills (Wills!) the owl's wing healed, bones re-smoothed, fractures un-cracked, flesh un-bruised, whole again broken ages ago and not a problem, it blinks at her as if it doesn't quite know what's going on, chirrups questioningly, keeps its beak open and hophophops away, already holding its wings spread as if it is going to menace something, as if it hasn't realized yet that it can fly. Still: the wing does mend. The owl just hasn't realized it. Overbalances talons wiggle in the air and it clicks again then starts picking at its wing for mites. Startles. Leaps into the road.

Alexander stands, attention almost elsewhere. Still resigned, still feeling like he’s losing himself in whatever it is going on here. He takes a step towards the fissure that maybe only he sees, drawn by a voice that only he hears. Pleading, begging. Desperate too? His vision flashes again for a moment, yet more sparks of light and dark arcing between Sera, the owl, him. Images of the owl flying off, dying in Sera’s lap.. Images flashing through his mind as connections are made and lost. Scared, frustrated, angry, he screams out as he covers his hands to try to blank out what he’s seeing.

Maybe they fade, maybe they don’t. But Alexander hears the chirrups from the owl which, minutes ago, had been dead. He looks up and watches it hop along the ground, not knowing what to believe any more. Too much is happening, too quickly. Maybe with a little warning that this was coming, Alexander could cope with it a little better. Or at least with fewer injuries. But, as it stands, his life as he knows it is coming apart at the seams. If he believed in anything, other than the “real” world, perhaps the idea of magic, or miracles, would have come a little more easily.

So his voice is empty of emotion again when he replies to Sera. “I’m hearing voices that you can’t, and you tell me that’s magic? I watch a bird that was dead, come back to life and hop away. I see... things. Things I don’t understand, things that can’t be there. And you want to tell me that’s not madness?” He looks into the fissure again. If none of this is real, then none of this can hurt him.

He closes his eyes and steps forward to join Alice down the rabbit hole. All his has ever really known, cared about, a lifetime ago in Seattle. His sanity questionable. If it’s all a hallucination, nothing will happen. If it’s not... Does he really have anything else to lose?

She can't see it. She can just Feel it, something Off, a little Niggle of magick, a slit in the Gauntlet maybe, a passage from one place to another, a place where Mages do not return from.

Serafíne

"No. No. Stop!" And Sera is urgent suddenly, this whip-crack of command in her voice; this need-to-be-heard and she was already rising as the bird with a no-longer-broken-wing talon-walked away but now she's all motion. Drops the picnic blanket she was using as a shawl or a coat and it drifts out behind her on the tarmac and she is running, flat-out-running toward him, the horizon all along, her head pounding, her blood pounding, her voice pounding, dusty boots pounding on the pavement -

- see, Stop, all arresting and then that launch of her body. Open-armed, running fast enough that she might as well be flying and she is aiming to throw her arms around Seattle Alexander's neck and her small and rather cold frame against his and to rise up brow to brow, close enough that he can smell the tequila and grape hummus, the tamales and mushroom tea, the humanity and decay on her breath and feel the bright flash of chill and then the deeper warmth on the exposed skin of her brow and stop,

and stop,

and remember.

"I'm here." Brow to brow, if he allows it. If he does not dodge or deflect. She's on her tip-toes and reaching and also pulling him down but also: eye to eye, her own dilated from the drugs she has ingested throughout the day, and also from this proximity; from the way she is cast in his shadow. "You're here, too. See? We're both here and we're real. Everything's fucking real, can't you taste it? Isn't it all brighter now? Doesn't it feel like the sky is scissoring open and you're remembering everything you thought you never new?"

Sera's voice is absolutely shot through with wonder; with awe. With brilliance. She's almost crooning to him.

The voice (voices now?) call to him, pleading, coaxing. He’s so close, almost there... As he stumbles. Cursing, almost falling to the side, he stops for a moment. Sparing his left leg, taking all of his weight on his right. Are Fate and Chance toying with him? Dangling him over the abyss, just to snatch him back before the rope breaks? Eyes open, now, he looks at the fissure. Just above, close enough to reach out and touch... Close enough to look through..?

“Stop!” comes the call from nearby. The word alone registers, but would it be enough on its own to cause Alexander to pause? To take a breath and hear what follows? Academic, as Sera bends reality to her will and subdues Alexander’s for just a moment. Long enough to get closer... But not as close as she wants. There’s a feeling of... something having just happened. Something strange, yet more going on beyond his comprehension. Somethingsomethingsomething...

So as Sera approaches, he turns to her. Whether the something came from her, or the fracture, or somewhere else he doesn’t know. But he does know that, right now, she’s as close as he cares to let anyone get. So arms out, he catches her shoulders and keeps the distance between them. Still close enough for the sensations... alcohol, thresholds, wonder. He does look into her eyes as she speaks, though. From the heart.

And she’ll see tears coming right back at her. No sobs, no crying – everything is still too numb for that. But he’s breaking. Broken. She explains what happens if he does step through. And it almost appeals more than anything. Alexander takes a deep, ragged break and replies to her, “I don’t know who I am any more. I’m losing myself, and I’m scared.” Another deep breath as he looks back at the fissure. Would anyone really be bothered if he did disappear?

Serafíne

So: so, Sera does not throw her arms around Alexander's neck; he catches her by the shoulders instead, arrests all that forward momentum before she makes the contact she seeks and he can feel the kinetic energy, the potential inherent in her body. But for all that it's not hard for him to stop her. He's a cop; he has more than half-a-foot on her and she's actually rather small, sharp-shouldered and spare-bored.

And Sera sees the tears in his eyes and Sera cries at the drop of a goddamned pin and suddenly, immediately, there are answering tears in her own, but Sera's tears spring not from despair but from that aching wonder with which she desperately wishes to infuse him.

Jesus Christ this world.

So: there he is, reflected in her eyes, and he's scared and he doesn't know who he is anymore and here she is, his hands on her shoulders, her heart pounding, each breath short and bright and cold and sharp, and her body is shaking with excess adrenaline that has poured itself into her already-altered blood and that tremor is especially pronounced in her hands - an impression of a gold ring and a leather cuff - as she reaches over his arms to cup his face, her ring fingers skimming the line of his jaw, her thumbs settling with a remarkable gentleness over his cheekbones.

"That's okay," she assures him, and she's smiling now. Smiling and crying and expressive and on the verge of laughter that has a pronounced edge of giddiness to it because he's new. He's brand new. He's just waking up. He's just being born.

"That's okay," and she's all conviction. "No one fucking knows who they are. Every fucks that up, even the Sleepers, I don't fucking know and I have worlds inside me, I have oceans, I have goddamned storms but you -

- you, you're opening your eyes. You've been Sleeping for so long that it's hard and it's painful and it's wild and everything you thought was wrong and that's okay.

"There's nothing wrong with being scared. There's nothing wrong with any of it. Let yourself be scared.

"Let yourself be."

Smiling.

Since that night in Seattle, Alexander has shut himself off. Coped. Because that’s all he knew how to do. Day after day, dealing with the heartbreak, the embarrassment, fencing off the anger to avoid lashing out at people. All kept inside, hidden away. Frozen. Only these things weren’t as dormant as he he’d have liked to think. Things build up on these unstable foundations, until that one last straw...

And what a straw. Life has pulled the curtains back and opened the windows on his closed and sheltered life. Not out of cruelty or kindness – but just because it was time for the seed to sprout. For Alexander’s Avatar to rouse from its slumber.

So here he is, sharing tears with a woman he barely knows, on opposite sides of the mirror. One cold and frozen, the other hot and full of life. Winter and summer. Alexander pulls away for a moment as Sera reaches for his jaw, but then relaxes and allows her to touch him. It’s the first time he’s let anyone touch him in some time, the risk of letting anyone get close a little too high.

Sera speaks of people not knowing who they are and it rings so true. For years his life has lacked a direction, until he found the police. Others wait their whole lives to discover who they are, who they want to be. He listens in silence. There’s nothing really to say. Just knowing that he’s not alone right now, and that someone else understands, is enough.

Again, Sera bends reality a little and shares the feeling of wonder. Alexander’s eyes close as the feelings pass over him and through him. Enough to remember that the feeling exist. Enough to melt the ice a little. There is a sob this time, as he lets go a little. He stands there, leaning a little on Sera for support, for... an amount of time. That seems to get frozen, too, in the moment. Long enough for Alexander to... if not feel good, at least pull himself back together for a little while longer.

A haggard breath in, then, and he opens his eyes again. He rubs a hand across his eyes and asks, “If I’m not going mad, then what is that?” He nods towards the fracture. “And...” She tells of storms within her. Something about a dream, a voice. Lost in it a storm? “They were asking for help. The voices. One from that thing. The other one I dreamt about, but have heard her since. I don’t know who she is. I think I’ve lose her.”

Serafíne

"Fuck if I know," Sera replies, turning to glance over her shoulder at the position he indicates, where the fissure appeared. She never saw it; just the coalescent energies all bright around it, but she's letting him go and glancing over her shoulder and just accepting it. Turning back to him, " - that's not my kind of magic. Maybe Leonhard knows -the guy from the other night? Liechetenstein? But the woman you dreamed about, you haven't lost her. You've woken up to her.

"She'll be back. You'll hear her again. It's hard to know, though, how soon it'll be. Or how long, but she's inside you.

"She always will be." This quick curve of her mouth. Bitter and sweet. "Even if you don't remember."

Then her gaze ticks down his body. Taking stock of his cuts and his bruises, his fracture finger, his wounds.

"You're hurt. I'll heal you.

"Give me your hand."

Hand out, palm up.

She's going to heal him, Sera.

Alexander watches as the fracture fades away into nothing. Oblivion more than a step away, but – for now, anyway – no longer a temptation. He doesn’t really understand what it was, where it came from, or who the voices were. And it seems to be outside Sera’s area of expertise. But, well, maybe he can find another way to figure out just what’s happened today. That small, female voice asking for help? That will stick with him. Maybe he’ll hear her again, maybe he won’t. But just maybe he’ll try to find her and help her in some way.

Sera heals him. Not without, still, some scepticism that anything will happen but hey – it’s not the weirdest of things to have happened today. His broken finger pulls itself back into position, whatever went pop in his ankle feel like it’s gone back to where it was supposed to be. He tests his weight gingerly, putting more and more weight on it until he’s happy it’s not going to give way again. He still feels battered and bruised under his leathers, but he’s certainly grateful for what she’s done.

Looking back at the bike, though... That’s going to be a long walk into town. “I don’t supposed to can fix tyres too, can you?” He walks over to the bike and pulls it upright, wincing at the damage to the bodywork. “Or have a phone for a tow truck? How did you end up here, anyway?”1

ill-luck

A car! A car is coming!

ill-luck

The owl is still in the road, although on the side of the road. Perhaps this car is not going to hit it.

Serafíne

"I came out with a friend of mine for a hike with a thermos of mushroom tea and a cooler full of tamales. Then we were gonna fool around and watch the stars come out.

"Her name's Natalee. I think her truck's this way. C'mon.

"I'm sure we can dig my phone out of her gear. Ooh, and we can call Hawksley. He's fucking smart, maybe he'll know what that shit in the road was."

Alexander Brandt

"Watching the stars come out sounds like a pretty good plan." Hell, anything with company at the moment sounds like a pretty good plan. So he starts pushing the bike in the direction she points, walking along side her. Far enough apart to avoid bumping into each other.

Alexander spots another car approacheing, a cloud of dust being towed along the highway. The owl sits at the side of the road, seemingly stoned and oblivious to the approaching vehicle. Remembering the last time, he curses quietly. Kicking the stand for the bike and leaving it, hopefully safely, off the side of the road, he jogs over to the owl. If it stays calm, to try picking it up again. If not, to scare it into taking flight.

ill-luck

That owl. That owl has had many things happen to it today and it is still very very confused about those things. There is a car coming, and it doesn't seem to notice or to comprehend, but Alexander has an investment in the owl. Serafíne can feel the moment when Reality's drawn its fists back to slug her, hit her, beat her down, how dare she go against Reality, how dare she stand against it and say what has happened will not stay Happened, that what is broken should mend, how dare she, and she feels it in her face, and her nose bleeds a little as Alexander approaches the owl, crooning, the calm wide-eyed owl which clicks its beak at him, and the car is there, there it is a Nissan, and the driver sees a young man scooping an owl up, and the owl moving a little restively in his grip, trying to get comfortable, and it always feels like a precious thing, holding a wild animal, a wild animal that lets you hold it, and

and that is how Alexander and Serafíne walk back to find Natalee, who is still sleeping in the back of her truck. And it is time to get away, certainly, because Alexander's Working might have attracted other attentions, mightn't it? Natalee is muggy-eyed and fuzzy-headed and she offers Alexander a swig of tequila and perhaps by then Alexander has set the owl down somewhere and if he did oh how the owl looked after him and Serafíne, as if perplexed, perplexed, what happened? Or perhaps he keeps it, and Natalee coos over the adorable widdle birdy, and

nothing whispers, not right now. That sense Alexander has of ill-luck, of doom, it grows less, diminishes although it does not disappear entirely, and he will continue to have minor bad luck for the rest of the day, bad luck that gets slighter and slighter, until it's night and time again to fall asleep.
