RULES (Full credit to Kai via Damon, whose rules I have shamelessly ripped off and modified for my own purposes):

1. There is no post order, but please only post once for each post I make unless I say otherwise.

2. Post quickly! Posts within 10 min and declare/roll in 2 minutes or less. Today these are hard-ish (like, "needs Cialis" level) deadlines; I will give a warning if we start getting too late and then we'll start skipping.

3. You are free to multi-task, so long as you can abide by the above strictures.

4. This scene has potential risk: spiritual (my soul is on fire!), psychological (oh god, their soul is on fire and that's horrifying to comprehend!), physical (my head is on fire!) and social (I don't care if you're on fire. ...what, why do you look angry?). If you decide you want to bow out based on that I am completely fine.

5. Please PM or IM me with anything you want to be off-limits; phobias, triggers, themes, etc. Also PM with any relevant Merits or Flaws (Nightmares, Phobias, etc.) or any active magical effects (wards, Life enhancement, et. al) your Mage has going on your person. If you need to roll those, or Nightmares or the like, do so now. If none of these apply, no need to PM me with "None"

7. Please keep track of your own health, Quint, WP, etc.

Our setting today: the Santa Fe Arts District. The time: just around dusk. The sun is setting in the sky, painting the canopy of the world in vibrant colors. Tonight, those vibrant colors seem strikingly red for some reason. Who knows why the colors end up exactly the way they are on any particular reason. Well, in truth scientist know, and they would be able to talk at length about how the reflections of this and that and the earth's atmosphere and the landscape and whatever. But they'd be missing an important factor: sometimes, something spiritual is in the air. And that can flavor even something as vast as the sky. Whether that's the case tonight or not remains to be seen.

We open our scene not on the main thoroughfare, but off on a side street somewhere. This is not far from the restaraunts and bistros and art galleries and the rest that dot the main strip of the area. The shadows are just a little bit longer here, but it's not desolate and full of murders or muggers or mugging murderers...at least, any more than the rest of the city. There are a couple shops, more out of the way mom and pop sorts of things than glossed-up affairs. This is where our heroes find themselves.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is out in search of more things to put up inside the library he's building. Because nothing says 'I am so into this virtual library' than keeping a whole host of physical books and hanging original artwork and antique maps everywhere. At least Grace hasn't had an invention. Yet.

He looks up at the sky, he is always looking up at the sky, and there is that reddish tint to it. Unsettling. Unearthly?

He takes in a slow breath and then breathes in again, hoping to catch some sense of whether or not he should be concerned about that reddish glow. It could just be a very macabre sunset.

But...in his experience, it never ever is.

Leonhard

Browsing the air, Leonhard considers the red and thinks of stars he hopes are long since faded from power. Rarely anything but the slightest of astrologers, he had been lax lately, and not in the way Gustav might have him believe. These streets had, however, drawn him back. Cupcakes aside, ranging through the area as the dark began to make its claim had seemed more likely to grant him some new sight or sense of whatever had been behind that last incident, indeed that last stirring of disgust if he were honest. Disgust at abuse, and at the cowardice he discerned behind it.

As ever, or at least as usual, he is moleskin jacket atop denim, gilded only by his pace. A look here, a look there, no sign of the stirrings that had befallen this area so recently. Still, it had been worth a look after visiting the galleries, checking on works, checking on exhibitions. He pats the magazine against his leg as he strolls, turning a corner, considering calling it an evening and heading back to Pasaran.

But.. Isn't that... Kalen, seemingly as a-hunting as he. He smiles, and waves the magazine, quickening his pace to shorten the gap between them.

Sid

Why is Sid here? If asked she would not be able to say. She's been trying to stay out of the city lately, there are just too many memories here, sweet things that have turned sour all thanks to one terrible conclusion of a conversation.

She started off somewhere else, downtown maybe. Campus perhaps. And then she started walking and when she started walking her mind tuned out the world around her, turned inward, and there it stuck. Turning over thoughts and possible pathways and on and on and on until

she blinks, is vaguely aware that this is not an area she's familiar with. That moment of awareness drains away when she realizes where she is. Close to Santa Fe, too close. Place of another memory that, like a popcorn kernal jammed into her gums next to the back-most molar, she just can't dislodge. Her legs are tired and her feet are probably blistered - Vaans weren't meant for long treks. And yet, here she is.

Putting one foot before the other. A memory of a dark day with someone she thought was her friend playing on endless loop.

Serafíne

There's a gallery off the main drag called Common Grounds. Well, it is not so much a gallery as a co-op shop/gallery/whateverish place where known unknowns and unknown knowns can show work and sell handmade scarves and rough-hewn tables and savagely painted canvases and twisted garden sculptures and spiritual sculptures. Local artists and fair trade shit, with direct arrangements with a few artists and artisans in Mexico and points south. A fair amount of religious work too, not the stultifyingly conservative bullshit of American praying hands, but the sort of religious shit that feels challenging, even revolutionary.

The proceeds get funneled together with the proceeds from a small thrift shop, attached (which is closed at this hour) to provide support services for immigrants, legal and illegal, the victims of human trafficking and the like. One of Pan's parishioners has a few pieces there and Sera and Pan are leaving the store and Sera has wrapped a batik day of the dead themed scarf - black and wind, loosely woven enough to be see-through - around her cropped leather jacket and half-see through dress and as they walk out of the store Sera's sliding her arm into the crook of Pan's arm, all intimate, and she's a bit quiet today but sometimes she is quiet, and for reasons that are opaque she is not wearing Insane Heels, but a pair of well-worn Doc Marten's at the bottom of her fishnetted legs and she breathes in as they exit, and looks up.

Between the long shadows of the buildings.

Doesn't take a repetition for the big priest to heed her. The easy way he lets her take his arm like he's a gentleman and the easy way he walks beside her doesn't speak of romantic entanglement. But there is affection between them. Love. He thinks of her as a daughter. Strangers can tell that just by looking at them.

So she murmurs to him and he hears her and he looks up at the sky. Doesn't think of science when he does. Doesn't think of God moving over the face of the water in the first days either. All of this started with a single note.

He breathes and doesn't speak yet.

The area is, as side streets tend to be sometimes, void of regular foot traffic and it is just these Awakened few who have found their way here. Some of the shops are open of course, though even some of them are closed for the night and the ones that aren't are winding down. It can't be coincidence that the vicinity is this deserted, can it? Of course it can't. These are mages, and in their world so few things are truly coincidential. The shadows cast by the buildings cover them all in a peculiar way as they begin to coalesce together, wreathing them in shade.

Footsteps pound on the concrete. Breaths come hard and fast. Those steps are heavy, coming from someone who is no slight individual. It's the sound of a large man, the kind that you look at and say "I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley" if you were to see him on the bus or in a coffee shop. And oh, look where those footsteps are sounding from.

A dark alley.

It may not be the footsteps that the Awakened hear, though it may when they pay attention. And it's hard not to pay attention when that Bitter Wind blows down the street, tingling against their sixth senses. It has a sharp taste to it, sending a chill of relentless, cold anger through their bodies and bones. And then they hear a man scream from that alleyway.

"OH GOD, SOMEONE PLEASE!"

Sid

Sid is not paying attention and yet there is a part of her mind that is always open. Always receptive and perceptive. Slowly sensations filter in. The storm. The light. The inspiration. The visceral.

The Verbena blinks. Blinks again. Is that...Sera and Pan. And over there...Kalen and Leonhard. She frowns. It's not unusual for Awakened to find themselves drawn together. She doesn't understand it but Sid stopped trying to science her way to an understanding of things that aren't meant to be understood. Green things grow from her touch and Mages flock together seemingly at random. But it's never really random, is it?

Footsteps. Sid breathes in and she straightens, a sleeper waking from deep slumber. A swimmer making their way to the surface, no longer drowning. It takes time, time enough for her to see a man running, and that frown deepens. He is coming with a bitter wind, with some strange sensation on the air, she can sense it, almost taste it.

Then someone screams.

Humming, she looks for harmony with something.

He's starting to smile, perhaps a little guardedly under that ominous sky, to respond to Leonhard who refers to him as family in a way as though it were nothing. Or possibly everything. Both? Kalen isn't really in a place to do more than admit he doesn't really understand.

But then that scream. The sense of the other Magi. Sid. Serafine. Pan.

Thank God Pan is here this time. He adores Serafine and Grace and Alexander. But his world is half-swallowed by eternity and dreams and he doesn't want to be the scariest thing the others have going for them. One crippled Flambeau is hardly terrifying.

That he cannot conceive of himself as frightening says something about the world he sees.

He flashes Leonhard a quick, grim smile and starts for where that scream came from. Of course he does.

Leonhard

God's probably blinking, thinks the Jerbiton - and all too wrily for his own liking. The air of Bitter Cold is not pleasant, and it strikes him poorly. Perhaps it's a failure in the moment but he does not think so much of frostnipped Alpine memories so much as nights in flight from the Pogrom, the Enemy, the stinging cold of something akin to hate. He glances to Kalen, meeting the Flambeau's grim smile with pursed eyes.

Yet, the Somebody Please, the running man, it has set him to motion as well. "Hey!" He calls to the large man fleeing the alley, though his legs are carrying him close behind Kalen's. He is suppressing his accent, though it is hardly a chore after so many years in Colorado. He gestures with the magazine towards the alley as he calls for whatever response the large-set man might have. "What the fuck, man?"

What the fuck, man? So gentile, but efficient enough.

Serafíne

Sera wraps her arm all the more tightly through the crook of Pan's elbow. It is like they are woven together, like she has braided them close. She can feel his immediate reaction, the instinctual tension in his body and she gives a sharp, side-sweeping glance at his profile. All aslant. If he starts running, he'll have to drag her with him.

"Let's look and See who's there. I'll look for the people; you look for the Work?"

Somehow, she is humming a half-remembered song beneath her breath.

It is the fucking BeeGees, so we are all in trouble.

Sera extends her perceptions out and, of course, she senses the five of the mages here and their physical states. But of course she's probably more interested in that alleyway. She feels one lifeform with a sentient mind, running down it with his (because it is a he, she can tell) muscles screaming and lungs burning from frantic exertion. And there is another form...not human. Something else...something cold and angry and single-fucking-minded...chasing after him.

atrox ultio

Kalen and Leonhard are approaching, Pan is bringing Serafine closer and Sid is in the general vicinity so she has full view as she--like the priest--watches for the strands of Quintessential energy that would indicate another Awakened doing Awakened things. With the two Hermetics moving the quickest (and without focusing to do magic), they are the ones that he nearly bumps into as he bursts from the alley, running like the hounds of hell are on his traul.

He is a big man; he's a very big man, actually. It's always hard to tell when someone is running as frantically and flailing as he is, but they might be able to estimate him at about six two, maybe six three. And he's built like a bruiser, the kind of guy that you would expect to bounce at a biker bar where things get rough on a regular basis. He's dressed that way too, in a leather jacket and jeans with a T-Shirt reading emblazoned with some local band or another across it. His hair hits just past his shoulders; in many ways he looks like your stereotypical biker.

But bikers don't run like this. He nearly careens into Kalen, nearly knocks him over. Seeing people seems like a sudden relief, although the panic and fear hasn't left him. "Oh god, you've got to help! I can't get away from it!"

He doesn't slow down as he says it; he rushes right by them and falls to the ground finally when he trips going off the sidewalk. There's a hard, cringe-worthy tumble into the street; he's gonna need to have some medical care. If he gets out of this.

And, of course, there is something else. They hear a pair of...are those hooves? And a low, angry growl as the thing begins to emerge from the shadows. They see the head of a--

Wait a minute, how did a deer get this far into the city? And since when do deer GROWL? But it's not a deer, and that's clear as it comes further out of the shadow. The grey fur of its head, punctuated with a pair of antlers, melts into an avian body with similar-colored wings. And a pair of powerful deer legs are what carry it forward.

And the eyes. The red eyes, glowing like coal embers. It hisses, looking at the five of them. But mostly at the biker.

Sid

Nothing is Happening, nothing is Working. Except for those others. Sera and Pan and herself. The street becomes becomes lighter, verdant, liminal as each Looks and each Sees and what Sid sees...

Doesn't matter what her feelings might be regarding the others. She alters her direction. One step before the other, slow, steady, testing the waters. And another, and another. Until Pan is flanked by a Verbena and a Cultist. "Kalen," she calls but quietly, just wanting to get his attention. If she does, she looks at Leonhard, and tips her head toward their own small group. A silent gesture of Come here. If shit is about to hit a fan, it's best that they group up, yes? Instead of someone crippled shuffling off into the mouth of darkness all alone?

She reaches into her bag for a folded blade which, once out, she unfolds. Lightly digs the point of the tool into the forefinger of her right hand, stopping when a droplet of blood wells up. Rubbing it with her thumb, smearing the red across her fingers, she looks for other Patterns. If she needs to ruin someone or something's Luck today, she will need a target.

"No workings but ours," she says, because greetings are for suckers and for people who are not Awake to the dangers inherent in an ability to reshape the universe with a Will.

Before she can start looking for those Patterns, however, she sees them. Sees the big man running out and looking for assistance, help from a thing he can't get away from. Sid watches him with steady eyes whose distance only seems to add to the sense of agelessness in them. Then she looks at the alley and she digs past the layers of sadness, pain, guilt. She finds that coil of fear - fear for her companions, her friends, these people who aren't really family but who are as close to one as she'll likely ever be again - and she twists it.

"That can't be good."

Why, when in all those years, things have grown evermore extreme, desperate, accentuated in the imbalanced humors of bile and spite and the trench warfare of hubris-ridden Enlightened conflicts, one after the other, upon the other...

Yes, there are days when such a Jerbiton might wonder, why is it that we no longer sit so high in the Order when the world in would serve so clearly needs a defter touch.

And there are days when a huge bastard-beast of a thing chases a biker into such a Jerbiton, who can only think to say, "Flank it, might slow it, I'll get him back."

As they come upon the alleyway the Cultist and the Chorister stand beside each other. No intention for the latter to release the former. If he can serve as an anchor or a focus for the younger woman then Pan will do that for her.

That creature comes out of the alleyway after the biker and he draws a breath of surprise but he doesn't flee or cast out God's wrath through his own Will. Not just yet anyway. And then it speaks, in a low bass, punctuated by its hiss. "Leave. I just want him."

"Bygone. Peryton. Punker here must have invited its... ungh... you could lay of the pies..." The harrowed expression on Leonhard's face comes into being not from fear but moral quandary. Moral confusion. Frustation, however tinged with something altogether enlivened for some reason. He can scarcely keep his eyes off the antlered thing before them all, but scrabbles to get the Biker back, retreat, buy time and life. Time and breath. Damn, he thinks, damned, he knows... In Latin, he continues, caring not the merest of figs for how pretentious it may seem at first glance, but somebody's unlikely to speak Latin and he's got a beard and a Peryton after him... and Leonhard almost watches as the biker makes his own way backwards now. Almost. Eyes on the lesser beast, the Peryton.

"Seeks vengeance," comes the hurried, harried Latin explanation. "Murderers, of the innocent. Never stops. Tenacity and vengeance given a most resolved flesh. But we mustn't kill it. It's a Bygone." And unspoken but present is his reluctance to allow a death, even of a biker murderer. Even on the say-so of one of the True World's remaining bastions.

Yes, there are Jerbiton who might sit with Merinita, with Criamon, and bemoan their lot. And then there are glimmers, however morally confounding, that point to the world of Wonder that they would reclaim. Perytons. Damn.

"Are you so sure," the Jerbiton asks of the Bygone, returning to English, the force of Truest Nature. "Is there no chance that he might... be innocent?"

Sid

There is a part of Sid that, when she hears this thing is a creature of vengeance, wants to let it do its thing. Is she not also a creature of vengeance? Did she not return to her home to exact a five-year-old revenge on the people that hurt her? Reminded them of her existence, let them know that she is in fact alive, brought her enemies' attention back to her?

Murderers. Murderers deserve what's coming to them, but.

Sid is also a murderer. Well, not really, but she's let people die. She has nearly killed and for a time thought she would kill again. She's not that person anymore, she's changed.

Her eyes are on the biker man as Leonhard speaks, the corner of her mouth twitching like she might smile at the use of Latin, which she understands. If she was going to smile, though, it doesn't resolve into one after all. Her expression is grim.

To this...bygone...she says, "Even if he's not innocent. Are you sure he can't....for lack of a better word," a quick glance up at Pan, "repent? Do you think he can't...I don't know. People learn. People change."

She's swallowing notes against the back of her throat and her skin is porous and she sometimes measures moments as heartbeats; the constant pulse of the universe against the back of her mind, the song you cannot forget and never entirely remember and that's what she is shifting around the Bygone. Changing around him. Pulling into and then peeling out of focus.

She can feel it in her breastbone; she can feel it between the chambers of her heart. The hidden stars and the visible horizon, tick and tock, just softening around him.

They're talking. She doesn't understand Latin; she doesn't know what this thing is but it just wants him, that man who has fallen in the street.

Does she remember turning her head to look at his body sprawled on the asphalt, or the reflection of the changed and failing red sun sprawled against the horizon in some oil-streaked puddle in the gutters,

Pan is a murderer.

One could argue that he's done his time and served his debt to society and is now free to move through it without judgment but Pan also has the distinction of being a recovering addict. You get your veins introduced to needles and know what it is to get yourself loaded into a cop car with your buddy's blood caked into the creases of your knuckles while your baby boy screams from his crib at the back of the house and people tend to stop thinking of you as worthy of much of anything though.

Could say it's in the past, this murderousness, but Serafíne has seen him put a bullet into a living thing. That living thing had gone through the Caul. His Bible preaches the extermination of evil.

At the question of penitence Pan catches Sid's eye. Yes that's the word. He takes another drag off the cigarette to keep the ember going just in case he needs it and starts to step his way towards Leonhard and the biker.

Sera says he needs to go. Pan isn't sure if he agrees yet.

If the creature does not charge them then the priest takes the long-haired man by the arm. They're the same height. The same build. The priest stronger than he looks. And unless the biker offers up resistance the priest intends to put the biker's back to the wall so he's hemmed in while the priest crouches and asks a couple of questions.

Kalen Holliday

Leonhard asks about innocence. Sid asks about repentance. Kalen wants no part in a discussion about any of that at this particular juncture.

He takes a breath and looks back to Pan. Sure, there are whole sets of hierarchies for who he was trained to answer to, and those mostly end with Leonhard. It doesn't matter. He looks back to Pan and watches Pan move for the biker.

He turns his eyes back toward the creature, studying it now less because he wants to know how it might die and more for wonder. Because...seriously...wonder.

"We are never wrong," it says to Leonhard, as if the very thought of them being so is an impossible one to conjure up. The antlered head, those points so razor sharp, swings in Sid's direction. "And blood must be paid by blood. Repent? There's a hiss that sounds distinctly like the emotion behind what might cause a human to snort. "The soul burns for vengeance. There is a debt, and one way to pay it."

Relentless, bitter air. Now it's starting to come together.

As for the poor biker, his eyes widen when Pan hauls him up. Surely the priest isn't going to deliver him to the thing. He starts to struggle but then when he sees Pan's moving him to the wall and not to the fucking murderous talking deer-bird-thing, he doesn't quite resist. Yet.

"What the fuck, man?" That's all he gets out immediately. This is too fucking weird and terrifying for him.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen's attention stays on the creature now, taking in the way it advances, the way it studies them.

And so, being what he is, he takes a step between them. He doesn't care to hold off a creature that is rightfully vengeful. He does take issue with it eating his friends in the process.

"Their worlds are, in at least some senses that matter in this moment, not so absolute. Patience. They are dedicated to justice, if not vengeance. In the end, I do not believe they will stop you." His voice is soft, but clear enough. And, despite the phrasing, that is much more request than command.

Yeah...mark Kalen down for siding with the Bygone in this situation.

Fr. Echeverría

"My name is Father Francisco Echeverría. I'm a priest. All these people, they're the only chance you got of getting outta here if you ain't done nothing you gotta atone for. If you lie to me, I'm gonna know, and I'm gonna walk away."

Pan points the streaming cigarette towards the creature that will have at him if he walks away and pins his attention on the biker.

"Other than you're being chased by that, tell what you're running from."

Leonhard

Protect the Sleepers, they know not wha... No, not enough. Not for those that murder and deny the first stage of truth and wonder: breath. Not enough, those bendy Protocols. Not enough. So, it is to the Code that his instinct reverts more naturally. He had been avoiding this. The Protocols were always so much more of a referee than a judge, but he has his Oath, there went his Word... and still he comes up a blank, trumped by the scenario. Trumped. Kalen moves, says what he says, it fits, it works, it would even get a nod from the Jerbiton but for his own internal frustrations. (I won't see a Bygone again for another twelve years, and this biker puke-in-purse is the cause?!)

There is absolutely nothing, nothing, in the Code (there never really is, not often enough!) to cover this and to pish with the Peripheral Corrigenda even being considered... Consider breath, Leonhard. Consider life, Leonh... Life and death and murder andhere'sanidea, the thought runs before he can stop it. The thought runs all the way to his tongue. His eyes flit from Kalen, to Sid, to Sera, unable to see Pan now, back to the Peryton with his arms outstretched. Not in welcome, not in grandiose prideful gesture, but in inclusive address to the mighty Peryton...

"You are never wrong," he repeats, acquiescing only to fact, to truth. "You are never wrong and your quarry is never innocent, but in your tenacity, in your resolve, your success in meting what is... ah, deserved... you must have been confounded in the past. So long a time, so many murderers like this pig. Have you never been confounded? I expect so, though I do not find it comforting; I merely state the inevitable frustrations you have met in your time, and ask: is there no compromise? Can half a life be taken by two? A third by three? More by more, a burden made an offer to your purpose?"

He turns to the biker. Venom now. Pan speaks to him; Leonhard speaks of him. "Especially since you can be sure of a reckoning for him beyond your own purposes."

Sid

Soon as Pan moves off to move the biker, Sid goes not to follow, but to stand between the creature and him. Guarding the priest at least so long as he chooses to interrogate the man. She will move aside if or when he decides to, but only then. Unlike that night at the Chantry with Thakinyan staring down, she can protect him with more than just her paltry human body, with flesh and blood and bone.

"That's not true," she says quietly. "There are lots of ways to pay a debt. Lots of roads to choose from." She's stalling, really. Buying Pan time to talk to the biker.

Sera asks about nothing; neither innocence nor repentence and her heart is beating; hammering in her chest and Pan unwinds himself from her, stalks over to the biker, lighted cigarette in hand and starts to haul him against the brick and she gives him a look, half-following, her leather jacket a bit askew, the straps of her cocktail dress dark against her tanned skin and now she's in motion; less frozen, now she remembers how to move-in-place and move-in-time even though there's only so much she can take in the

and reminds her of something; of someone; of a myth she remembers. Of threads and scissors and fates and Fates; the thread of moonlight through leaded windows.

Sera wants Pan to get him out of here a bit urgently, but everything is spongy and she doesn't remember whether she's told him that or no, but they're at the mouth of the alley and the girl in the cocktail dress is trailing the man-in-black and the moment feels frozen and fracture and she probably doesn't speak because she still has most of her attention on the moment, the pulse of the moment, the places where the pulses meet and where her senses begin to blur. There's a plea in there, in her body and in her body and in the wordless and rather - well, fucking wordless and helpless appeal in her eyes as she looks at the others, and then she rounds a bit on the Bygone, impatient, bitter, cold and angry. Everything, everything that she is not.

"That's such fucking bullshit!" Just an outburst. Perhaps enough to bring its attention to her. "Such deterministic fucking bullshit. What the fuck - "

They're starting to take sides now, or at least two of them have. Kalen is taking his side with the peryton, for his reasons. Sera has sided against it. And they're all positioned between themselves and this creature, magic thrumming through their persons as they stand off so that Pan can get to the bottom of things, after a matter. Sid and Leonhard, they speak to it and try to find compromise, or buy it time. We'll get to that.

The biker--let's call him John, because John is his name. His last name is Fletcher, but that's not important right now. Anyway, John is being confronted by the impossible, but he's not completely without his senses. He hears the right words, and he understands that this thing is trying to kill him because of a murder he committed, years ago. And Pan is asking about it. He watches the priest for a long moment, uncertain about--well, about all of this. But the thing, it knows. And now the priest wants to know so he can...help? Pass judgment? Who knows; either way, it's his only chance.

"T...ten years ago." He's looking at Pan, not the others. Certainly not that thing. "It was...I was high. Completely methed out, and I was trying to score because I was strung out. It was right down here, actually." He's just realizing that now. It hadn't even occurred to him before, what with the fear and panic of something that should not be running him down.

"I knew a guy, he dealt down here. I was gonna rip him off and it was all going okay. I got the stuff and started to run and he came after me. I had a gun...I went to shoot him and missed..." He can't look at Pan now, his eyes dropping to the ground.

"There was a kid. I didn't notice him in the alley before. Didn't see him until he was already gone. And then I was running away. I got my life back together at that point. Knew how wrong I'd done. Tried to find someone to do right by the kid and I work with charities now and shit, but..."

Yeah. He knows what he's done.

Leonhard tries to reason with the creature and Sid argues that there are other ways to pay a debt, but this is a Bygone. Humans, they have choices that a creature like this doesn't. It has a singular purpose, and as it steps closer--yes, it gets closer, hissing threateningly--they can see the shadow of the creature. The form of a young child, entirely unlike the shadow it should case by its form. "There is no confoundment. The spirit seeks vengeance. I must and will deliver it. Step aside now."

Leonhard

A sideways look finds its way to Sid. It is not a glance, this, though it doesn't remain for long. A look of regret; the Bygone will not be dissuaded. It is a regret that claws behind those brown eyes so briefly looking to Sid, perhaps even into her own, perhaps not, but they pointed that way for a moment. Yet, even though Leonhard's head then turns back to the Peryton, even though there is that movement, that is the only movement he makes. His arms are still outstretched, passive, saddenned. Far more confounded in purpose than the Peryton ever could be, and far more confronted by morals, he might think later if he has the chance, than the biker. Damn.

The Jerbiton's gaze seeks the eyes of the Peryton, whether they meet his or not. The shadow that falls from the Bygone lends his eyes to profound regret. Sorrow. No tears; he is too frustrated behind those eyes, and too set upon what pain might follow. It is a regretted stand, but a stand nonetheless. Kalen was not wrong, his eyes might say to the Peryton. He was not wrong in what he said. This will not stop you but I cannot allow you, sweet Bygone, sweet hidden proof, however much I might wish it so... I will not move but I will not strike.

Sid

Sid bends and twists and braids the threads of Fate around the creature, preparing just in case it does decide to change its target to them. To her friends. And she tries to stall a creature that she doesn't know until...she doesn't know what. Until the biker is deemed deserving of this fate? Until it attacks one or all of them?

Sid doesn't know. She just bends and twists and talks until she can feel it, that effect. That ball of twisted Fate ready to drop down over the creature. Make it harder to hit them or harder to chase them or harder to she doesn't know. She just makes things harder for other people. Will make it harder for this creature if she has to. If it won't be swayed off its path, maybe the spirit that's sent it can be.

It steps forward and Sid doesn't move. "And what will that do?" she asks. She is not talking to the creature now, but to its shadow. Or to it. Is it the same thing? Hell if she knows. "Do you think it'll make you feel better? I can tell you that it won't." Leonhard looks her way but she doesn't look back at him. Her eyes, so dark and brown and filled with forever, fill also with tears. "I can tell you that there's no winning in revenge, there's only ever losing."

Serafíne

So there is a kind of ellision, a lacuna, a space between. Sera is facing the Peryton, has Pan and the biker in her periphery and is aware of them all. She is breathing; shallowly. Hears the man's confession and sees the shadow change and feels something bright and painful beneath her skin. Leonhard, arms open -

- and Sera is rather breathless now. Hears the man's confession and remembers another story and remembers a story without a name or a beginning or an ending. Just a bridge, and then another wordless chorus. Somehow her arms have crossed in front of her, tight beneath her breasts. This happens midstory but she does not remember drawing herself up, tightly wound, nor does she remember loosening them.

Somehow Sera is in motion, though. Walking toward the peryton, perhaps past Leonhard? She stands right the fuck in front of it.

Oh god this is going to hurt.

- then sinks to her haunches, heels coming up, balanced on the balls of her toes in her combat boots. Reaches out and cups her hand in the shadow-of-a-child cast by the bygone-of-vengeance.

Close to the hooves.

Sera knows nothing about Spirit or spirits. The only myths she remembers are the ones that twist the gut, that stick in the back of the throat, that make one's heart beat, with regret, love, loss.

"Listen to him, listen to her," she murmurs, her hand in the beast's shadow, aware of its heaving flanks, aware of the shadow cast against the ground, aware that she has no means of reaching across to the other side, except her voice, and entirely aware that that cannot really be enough. "Hear them." A glance, up the elegant, shiver-cold beast's frame, piecemeal.

"We will find some other way to make this right."

"Please. Let go."

If the biker is Catholic or Protestant or Buddhist or an atheist or doesn't give two shits about religion or his soul or any of this it doesn't matter. He starts to speak. Starts to confess. This is the only chance he's going to get. The priest has already told him that. It's not a proper confession and they're skipping over penance and an act of contrition. In an alleyway where a former meth addict killed a child with a missed shot it's closer to last rites than anything else.

Francisco Echeverría has no room to judge anyone for anything they've done ten twenty thirty years ago. He doesn't judge. That's not his job. He casts aside the cigarette and removes his rosary from the pocket of his jacket and begins to whisper. The whispering goes on:

"Dominus noster Jesus Christus te absolvat; et ego auctoritate ipsius te absolvo ab omni vinculo excommunicationis (sespensionis) et interdicti in quantum possum et tu indiges."

As the others begin to pass their own judgments and take their own stances before the Bygone the priest makes the sign of the cross before the sinner. All of them are sinners. It's the biker he's hoping to allow to forgive himself before he either dies or flees the alleyway for the last time.

"Deinde, ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen."

Whatever happens next is up to the Bygone but the priest doesn't walk away.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen hears what John says. And he believes in redemption. Given the choice, he'd leave him to live and repent. He is not unforgiving. He does not believe in a universe without forgiveness.

Or justice. Which is not the same as vengeance. But there are only so many left to stand for the innocent left. If this creature's will and his do not align here (ad make no mistake, they do not), he is more willing to let a man die here and let the peryton move on to its next (and hopefully more just) quest.

There are acceptable sacrifices. Sacrifices. They were never meat to be easy. Never meant to be without cost. John is an acceptable sacrifice. Pan and Sera and Sid and Leonhard are not.

The choice is not without weight, but it is easy.

He walks up to where Sera is, kneels beside her, and wraps his arms around her. As long as she doesn't set herself at the peryton, he thinks the beast will simply fling itself past them. Pan will leave it be. Sid and Leonhard...seem to be not about to actively intervene.

Sacrifice.

A peryton, it is said, does not stop for anything until vengeance (not justice) is served. It is not a creature of justice; this is not about balancing the scales for it. This is about the spirit inside, the soul of a young child that was ripped from life far too soon just because he had the misfortune to be wandering in the alley while his mother was off doing...well, let's just call it something something else. That spirit was so young and it didn't understand what was happening to it. It was alive and then suddenly it was just a memory of pain, a scared and hurt and angry feeling that has haunted this alleyway for a decade now.

Until the creature heard its cry. Heard it from so far away, as the man who turned him from a living, breathing boy named Alan whose favorite thing in the world was the feel of sun on his face into a feeling, a spirit, a memory. And even that was not the case; no one remembered him. Not even his mother could remember him, long gone herself from an overdose (suicide, really, even if it wasn't purposefully so). But John Fletcher, he did. He remembered Alan, whose name he didn't know, every day of his life. It haunted him, no matter what he did that was good. And when he cut through this alley tonight, those memories gave Alan's spirit a voice, and it called. And the peryton heard.

There is nothing that can stop a peryton. Reality says that. But these five, they do not hold to the rules of reality. They bend and twist and mold them like clay, even when there are consequences (and there are, and they'll be felt). And so Serafine beseeches not the creature, who has no choice, but the mind of the spirit inside. And somehow, she reaches through to it, past the perytron's red glaring gaze. And she tells it one simple thing:

Peace.

For a memory of a boy that knew nothing of pain, peace is an unknown concept. But it bleeds in, and hope prevails just as Pan is terrifying poor John with what seems like Last Rites (but in truth give him hope and forgiveness). That bleeding peace, like the blood in the sky, seeps through and allows Sid's words to be heard. Lets the look in Leonhard's eyes be noticed and felt. Sees Kalen protecting Sera, in an act of selflessness.

And the red glare in those eyes grows, seems like it might explode with the heat of a volcano...and then vanishes. The shadow returns to that of a--

Well, as natural as a two-legged giant bird with a deer's head's shadow might look. The creature's eyes, now a soft brown, look surprised as it looks over the five of them. This has never happened to it before. And it may never happen again.

But it happened here and now.

[[Edit: "For a memory of a boy that knew nothing BUT pain"]]

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does not see the creature's eyes change. Not with his head dropped down beside Sera's. He does not close his eyes, but his world is more a world of breaths than of sights. Sounds.

He breathes in and there is no leap. No rustling of feathers as the creature springs.

He breathes out and there is stillness.

He breathes in again and there are no hooves skimming past him. There is only the scent of the creature and Sera and the concrete that holds echoes of the past and a child's blood.

He breathes out. Stillness.

He looks up and the creature is there. Still.

He smiles and lets his head drop again to whisper into Sera's ear, then releases her and rises slowly.

Kalen Holliday

"Has anyone ever told you that you are fucking incredible?" Those are the words. The tone might say something else. Something more intimate. But those are the words.

Serafíne

Sera is shaking; up close, Kalen can feel that. When he wraps his arms around her she thinks he's going to try to drag her away and there's a resistance beneath the frame of those tremors that is small but determined. She can hear Pan praying and feel the brilliance of his resonance and her throat is a bit raw and - up close - Kalen can hear her singing a bit. This melody that is more spoken than sung and is so sotto voce that he can hear it only because he is right beside her and the truth is she isn't precisely looking up and everything is charged and Sera,

sings. Quietly. Keeps singing as the moment shifts and changes. Watches the shadow change where it cuts across her forearm. That's when she turns, closes her eyes, and dips her head to rest her brow on Kalen's shoulder. Listens as he murmurs to her, opens her eyes close enough that she just sees him piecemeal. The thread of his pulse in his throat, before he pulls away.

She hasn't gotten up yet. Looks a bit dazed, really.

And reality is probably about to sucker punch her.

Leonhard

Other than the arms which lower at his side as if wilting, bereft of purpose, Leonhard cannot move. The event has an impact upon him, and one which defies even Will, he realises. The flare of the peryton's eyes and the way they turn to brown are uppermost in his view. Regardless of his sense of Resonances, of the sound of breathing, the other sounds of the broader city farther afield, it was the eyes... the eyes... Somewhere in himself, brutal as it may seem, he almost mourns the loss of that red, that density of purpose. Perhaps the peryton will not long stay so neutered, and he hopes it will not, however much it must mean another murder. A quandary, but one with a purpose. A paradox of life, given the flesh of a Bygone.

He thinks of those killed for their Vis, boiled and battered down into Tass. Centuries past, this was common he muses. Centuries past, there were buffaloes like a carpet of hide... So few remain, and their eyes turn brown when denied. And he cannot move, watching the peryton that remains and wondering how much of it is sufficient to the peryton that may yet be. That may yet survive.

And of the four Mages? Pride, and... he with the Resonance of Inspiration himself... Inspiring pride to be more accurate. Gentle. Resolute. Prepared. Traditions.

"You might want to fuck off now," he growls without turning to the biker that had wrought so much. Protect the Sleepers they know not what they do, until they do, and look what that has subsequently also wrought. This was no victory of peace, he thinks. Not in the long run. Not enough, anyway. A lauded moment in his heart, yes, but one of disdain for certain possible consequences. He turns to the biker. He does not move. He looks only to the biker. The biker.

Sid stands still when Sera walks past. She stands still when Kalen makes his way forward, lowers himself, wraps his arms around the Ecstatic. She stands still as Pan prays for John. She stands still and she stands guard, because she may not seem like it, but if the creature can't be reached well. She will continue to stand between it and its mark until she can't stand any longer.

They seem to have gotten through to it. The shadow changes, the eyes stop glowing, turn brown. Sid does not immediately release the effect she's worked around her, not yet. She is watching it, this thing. This creature of vengeance, committing what it looks like to memory. Because, she knows (thinks), someday it may come for her. Or for one of her friends. Or someone else another night.

The blood colors seep out of the sky as the sun continues to set in the west, and Sid lifts her chin. She relaxes, lifts her glasses an inch from her face and she scrubs away the moisture there. And she releases her Working, lets the threads of Fate fall back into whatever order they had been in before.

She looks at Sera and Kalen. Safe. She looks to Leonhard. Safe. She looks back at Pan. Safe. Then she's not looking at anyone, her chin lowered and her gaze to the ground a moment.

They are all busy with their own workings, their own thoughts, their own whatevers, maybe they won't notice when the tall, quiet redhead begins to make her way away. Not toward the shops, but to the east, toward the neighborhoods with their small squat houses and their overgrown and overrun lawns.

Kalen Holliday

He's starting to rise, to pull away from her, but she catches his hand in hers. There is one thing they haven't done. One last thing.

One last thing they gave to an Archmage that they could give to a boy.

He settles back beside Sera, wraps one arm around her and catches up a handful of grit from the concrete. Dirt. Ashes. Little bits of broken glass. Perhaps even the shards of dreams.

He is relatively sure those are what he feels biting into his skin.

He breathes out, sends that dust and those dreams shards off into the air. Watches them for a few seconds and then breathes back in and lets his eyes close.

You might want to fuck off now.

The priest shoots the Hermetic a look that very clearly says Shut the fuck up but doesn't open his mouth to rebuke him. Just puts a hand on the biker's elbow so he can guide him away from the Bygone and the spirit of the child his poor aim killed. A murderer about to lead a murderer away from vengeance.

"Come on," he says. "We gotta talk about your penance."

And maybe do a little bit of converting. He doesn't know if they'll have time. The younger man looks like he needs stitches.

Leonhard

To say the Hermetic is stirred by the look from Pan wouldn't be entirely wrong, though it is not a bristling or a response in any way insistent that, yes, the biker can indeed fuck off now. Catching the look from the corner of his eye at best, at best, he is really only looking at the biker. Looking at living proof that penitence costs those that support it. A coddled soul is not enough, he knows, and the peryton's smell draws him back to it. Not often you get a Bygone barely feet from you, after all.

Penance. The biker can be coddled in his penance; it is the peryton he considers. Purpose.

atrox ultio

John flinches at the growled words from Leonhard. The man has been pushed now, toward the ends of reason by this strange and nearly deadly occurance, but he recognizes a look of judgment, and he understands. He turns his eyes to the ground, doesn't see the look that Pan shoots the Jerbitron. And then he's being pulled and guided away by the priest, and he goes.

Serafine and Kalen separate the veil that makes time a linear thing, search back into the past. They see Alan, a young boy of maybe six. A bright boy, warm and friendly, who had the distinct misfortune of being born to the wrong person in the wrong circumstances at the wrong time in the wrong location. Any of those things changing may have meant he lived, but such is the way of fate. He had bright, intelligent green eyes and a ready smile, and he was also naive even for a boy of his age. He was an inquisitive boy who liked exploring this dangerous world he lived in. It only stood to reason that eventually it would result in his early end. He didn't have a lot of friends and there was no one who would help his mother (who would stick their hand out for a heroin junkie?), so he came with her when she needed to score. That brought him to a nearby building and then he heard something in the alley and, innocently, went to look. And there it was. They will remember him like no one else will.

Sid moves to quietly slip away, and the peryton looks at her a moment before it notices Leonhard looking back at it. It shifts its head to the right, regarding the Hermetic. There is a look that might, if you considered it just right, be one of respect. Maybe it's not; maybe it's the light. And then, without a word (because what is there to say?) it shifts and folds in on itself, becoming a crow. The ferryman of the souls of the dead, flying up and away into the blood red sky.

And the mages are there alone, like none of it had ever happened. No blood, no violence, no dead body. Not anymore.

Some liminal memory in the air around her. They have done this before.

Sera is still singing, beneath her breath, beneath the skin of her breath. It is quiet. Kalen kneels beside her again and her hand laces with his and she tightens her grip and back, and back, and back they go and the moment is shimmering into itself, is melting into its constituent pieces, is replacing and repiecing itself.

There is a boy. There is always a boy and she does not hear his name in the past and she will never remember it,

By the time they surface, the peryton is gone. Sid has slipped away. Pan is witnessing to a murderer whose confession sounded to her ears so much like -

She rocks back onto her heels though, tightening her grip on Kalen's hand enough to help her to stand.

Glances at Leonhard and the empty alley and the street left behind, and then at Kalen, and has no idea what to say. He's already walking away. Footsteps a soundless sort of echo, more a retreating resonance that paints the night in an oddly receding surreality.

If she closes her eyes tightly enough she can hear, perhaps, the rumble of Pan's voice as he witnesses to the ex-addict around the way. Feel his light like an X-ray right?

She tells Kalen, "Thank you." What else can she say?

Kalen Holliday

"Anytime," Kalen says softly. He reaches out, not to touch her face but to catch her nose between two fingers and press. He seems unconcerned about the blood, or really the fact that she is bleeding. He knows all too well what a life-threatening amount of blood looks like. "Be still."

The Christmas Party

Serafíne

It is Christmas or maybe the day after Christmas or possibly even the day after that and there is a certain house on Corona Street in Capital Hill where a house party is in progress and it is the sort of party that shows up in film montages about holiday parties. Listen, the house is lovely, three-stories, blonde-bright, with a wide front porch and a graceful, square-faced facade looking out onto the tree-lined street. It is impossible to get a parking place.

The house is grandly though rather messily decorated without. Whoever strung up the lights had perhaps never decorated the exterior of a home before and so the fittings are makeshift and the light strings have, here and there, started to sag from the eaves.

The front doors are unlocked and keep opening and shutting as people come and go. Some of them know the residents of the house, others don't. Some had a text invitation. Others were asked by a friend at the bar. Others heard from a friend of a friend, had a drunken invitation in the back of a taxi cab, or got a heads up from an old college friend or a dealer or what the fuck ever.

Inside: sometimes there is a crush and sometimes there is not a crush and somewhere there is a fire laid in the hearth and no matter the hour, darlings, there is food. Christmas cookies and appetizers and someone is always bringing something and baking something and pulling something out of the oven or the fridge and there is an ever-growing-and-dwindling assortment of booze: bottles of wine are given and opened and emptied. Bottles of beer and growlers too, and bottles of booze and mixers and there's a curl with a headful of curly black hair who is one of the best mixologists in the city and loves that shit who does catering these days since he's between gigs after a dispute with his old business partner, Ron-Ron, and he is presently acting-bartender and is making chatatinis for anyone who wants one.

Here is how you start a chatatini: pour a wash of 151 rum into a martini glass and light that shit on fire. Then make the goddamned drink.

So: people everywhere, board games even and someone is playing a very complicated cross-over of Risk and Clue and people are dancing and people are making out and there's probably someone upstairs engaged in copulation of some sort and someone doing a line in the bathroom and so on. There are, assuredly, intoxicating brownies to be had.

And at the center of it all in the warmth of the kitchen sitting on the granite countertop with a chatatini in one hand and a bottle of Stranahan's in the other there is a Serafine.

For a large majority of people who acknowledge one or another or all of December's holiday festivities, it is a time of love and peace and togetherness or whatever. Family's gather, lovers kiss and more beneath sprigs of herbs, presents are exchanged, et cetera et cetera. It's a time when people are supposed to be cheerful and forgiving. It's also a time of high stress, family visits with that relative wherever along the bloodline that lifts the blood pressure with a laugh or a thoughtless (or all too thought-out) sentence. It's long lines at the mall and crowded restaurants, with some people tipping generously in a vain attempt to balance that poor waiter's paycheck out with the people who had a rough day.

For some there is an extra date that's supposed to be commemorated but usually is merely a footnote to end the year on. For some it's an anniversary, a time too steeped in bad memories to be terribly joyful.

And for the woman named Sid Rhodes, December is all of these things.

Despite that tumultuous swirl of emotions and memories (a tumult that is mirrored in the air around her, which almost seems to shimmer with the warping of her resonance), Sid is out. She parked her truck three blocks over and walked the rest of the way to Dee's-house-which-is-Sera's to step through the front door. There's a paper bag tucked into her left arm, and as she makes her way inside she offers slight and crooked near-smiles to the strangers she passes. Her hair is down, curling over the shoulders of a navy blue sweater with three rows of pink-green-pink argyle diamonds. The sweater is worn over a blue buttoned shirt, its top three buttons undone down into the V-neck of the sweater. She knows that Sera's here, and she knows that Sera's in the kitchen, and since Sid has a bag full of liquor she directs her steps toward the kitchen. The last time she was in that kitchen it was less crowded. The air was different. Sid was different, but then Sid is always different. After years of running-hiding-escaping notice she's finally settled into a place, and with that settling has come a barrage of events that have shaped and reshaped and reshaped her again and again.

She steps into it now, and she pauses when she sees Sera sitting there, Dionysus in female form. Her smile is only a little hesitant, and then she strides forward to set her bag down so she can pull out a pair of bottles.

"Hey," she greets, her eyes on her hands, which pull out a tall bottle of Dragon Blue vodka and a smaller bottle of Jim Beam's Tennessee Honey Whiskey. She looks over her shoulder, back the way she came. Someone else is here, someone fundamentally shadowed. She glances at Sera, dark eyes lifting to the side, does she sense that?

Claudia

The thing is, Claudia wasn't even supposed to be in Colorado right now. Technically her dad had Christmas rights, but he'd changed plans last minute so he could take his girlfriend to Paris, which was neither new nor surprising. Claudia hadn't been terribly keen on another Christmas in LA, in any case. And Portland was still too full of ghosts.

The nineteen-year-old Verbena did not arrive at Serafine's party by way of invitation. She came, as she often did, by luck or fate or simply intuition. She was downtown, driving listlessly through holiday traffic; christmas lights reflecting and refracting off the polish on her dark car.

And a few of the cars seemed to be headed in a certain direction. And in the direction was a light magnetic pull that steadily grew stronger as she turned the corner and came upon a row of houses and a line of parked cars and then: one house in particular which glowed and reverberated with life and lights and music and... resonance.

She parked the car a ways down the street and locked it behind her, making her way down the sidewalk as she pulled her winter coat more snugly around her torso. When she stopped to survey the house, a stray bit of snow fluttered past on the breeze and landed in her hair.

It looked like the place was open, so she walked in, climbing the steps to the front door and peering inside. The thing she felt, pulsing and humming and magnetic - it was coming from the kitchen, but she didn't go there right away. Instead, she slipped into the house and slid free from her coat, folding it over one arm as she threaded past a group of dancers in the living room. Her manner was at first quiet and unobtrusive. Watchful (curious.) Once or twice she returned the smile of a tipsy party-guest, but always she kept moving. Until, finally...

She appeared at the entrance to the kitchen, dressed in dark skinny jeans and a burgundy cashmere sweater and a pair of strappy black leather boots, her coat still draped over one arm. Light makeup with smoky eyes and a bit of gloss on her lips. Dark hair loose and flowing about her rounded face. She regarded Sid and Sera with a soft tilt of her head, slightly animal in her curiosity.

"I haven't met you yet."

Serafíne

Sera is not wearing a pink argyle sweater. She is not wearing a sweater at all. In fact, she's barely wearing a top. It's warm in here with the humid press of bodies and sometimes the oven is on and god only knows. If one does not look closely, Sera appears to be wearing a bra and a mini skirt and a set of red and white stripped thigh-highs. Which are trimmed in fucking ermine, baby.

The bra is black and pink and the cups are transparent. Not transluecent but transparent so the outline of her rather small breasts is perfectly visible through the fabric. Twee little bows are sewn onto the straps there they cross the apex of her shoulder and it does appear to be a push-up bra because it has given Sera some rather lovely cleavage.

The short skirt is green velvet trimmed in white fur, I mean, lovely you know, lovely? it is very, very short and would barely cover her ass if she were standing up but she is not standing up, she has parked herself on the kitchen counter. Putting the logical pieces together, it appears that Sera started the evening in full regalia as a Sexy Elf, and has been steadily shedding pieces of the costume ever since.

The hat went first. The goddamned elf-shows. That stupid cropped top blouse thingy that covered up as much as it showed.

Sera's a little bit fucked up. More than a little bit fucked up. There's a sheen in her glossy eyes and a curl of scent in her hair and a languor to her body that - yes - seems rather Dionysian, doesn't it? The way her fingers wrap around the neck of her bottle of whiskey, or curl over the stem of her martini glass, Christ. You want her to touch you the way she's touching those things.

And it has been a long-ass time since was more than a little bit fucked up and a long-ass time since she threw a party of any sort, let along like this one, which is likely to unspool for days rather than hours, and a long-ass time since Sera saw Sid and since Sid saw Sera and Sid's looking at her hand as she pulls out the alcohol, and Sera - no matter how fucking painful or briefly jarring she might find Sid's sudden appearance - Sera stares straight at Sid, open-eyed and direct-as-hell, and says, "Hey - " back.

A softer curl of Sera's generous mouth though there is a subtle layering of tension in her spine.

Sid's quiet look of inquiry is followed almost immediately by Claudia's appearance. There is no time for a response and no indication in that moment that Sera did feel that, just a sweeping glance over Sid's shoulder, toward the entrance to the kitchen. And Sera's fucked up and the world's spinning on its axis and she can bear fucking normal people but not -

I haven't met you yet.

The brief, sudden flash of Sera's smile. It does not quite reach her eyes, but there's humor somewhere in her body.

"You sure about that?"

Sid

It is rather warm inside. It's been rather warm outside, as well, though the air is cooling as night progresses. And Sid is wearing a sweater layered over another shirt, jeans, mid-calf black boots. Eventually she, like Sera, may begin shedding clothing, dropping layers and pulling up her hair and occasionally stepping out into the unkempt back yard. That is later, this is now.

And for now Sid remains as she was as she stepped inside. Only when she glances over her shoulder and sees Claudia there does tension visibly begin to climb up her spine, and even then it's a subtle thing. Up close one might see more, but Sid is not up close to either willworker, and she has her back to the kitchen as she sets the second bottle on the counter. Crumpling up the paper bag, she looks for the appropriate bin. Only after she's tossed it away does she finally turn to face the newcomer. Sid had been preparing herself to face Sera - in a full and boisterous house as a party surges all around them, without much chance of private conversations about, well, anything.

Sid turns and leans back against the counter, one hand lifting to tuck her hair behind her ear, the other sliding into the hip pocket of her jeans. And she studies the newcomer with the smoky eyes and the touch of gloss, who came into Sera's house for a party because eventually most of Denver makes it into Sera's house for a party.

"I haven't met her," says Sid, in a voice that is not so quiet as it was when the other Awakened started popping up around the city, but still couldn't be described as terribly loud.

Claudia

Claudia was the youngest and the smallest of the three of them. Even with the extra inches her boots added to her height, she still had to look up to meet Sid's or Sera's eyes. To them, she must have seemed almost painfully young. And yet she walked in with a vast, primordial darkness curling at her heels. (They were each of them contradictions, in their own ways.)

It was difficult not to stare at Sera's breasts, given the way they were on display. When Claudia first regarded her, there was a short pause where her gaze landed there and hesitated, as though surprised, but it didn't seem to rattle her much. She didn't blush or look away demurely. Instead she retrained her gaze on Sera's face and made her introduction (such as it was.)

You sure about that?

Claudia lifted her eyebrows. "I'm sure. I would have remembered."

Sid confirmed this point, and Claudia regarded her a moment with that same steady, watchful gaze.

"I wasn't sure if this was a private party. I can leave if I'm interrupting." After a pause she added, with a small lift of her mouth, "If not, I could use a drink."

Serafíne

In truth, Sera is not especially tall. If they were standing in their stocking feet, she would have a bare inch on Claudia. But they are not standing in stocking feet: Sera is on the countertop of her warm white kitchen (Dee's warm white kitchen) which makes her tower a bit and her heels tonight are remarkably high and even if she has not yet regained all of the weight she lost during either her endless fast or her recent ordeal, she is no longer skeletal, and regardless of that: she always seems to try to take up more space in the world that she was ever originally allotted.

It's just her way. So.

Sera is bantering or maybe just needling because sometimes thing curl in her head and hand and sometimes things prickle beneath her skin and the night feels sharp and strange, both, all around here. Surreal even though she's yet to take the LSD she has tucked in her nightstand because who the fuck knows what happens when she takes a hallucinogen this time.

The last series of hallucinations she had were far from benign.

And Claudia feels like shadow and Sid was: there and then, not there and pieces of the night feel a little bit unhinged already. Sera swings down from the kitchen counter with an animal sort-of-grace, a native athleticism that lives deep down in her body. Picks up her bottle of Stranahan's and reaches up for a pair of juice-glasses from the overhead cabinet and pulls them down and turns them over and pours both Sid and Claudia three-fingers of Colorado whiskey.

"It's not a private party." Sera says, nudging one whiskey to Sid and the other to Claudia. "You're more than welcome. Have a drink. Have the goddamned bottle.

"Excuse me, though. I have to go piss. Entertain yourselves while I'm gone."

Escape

Hydra

Given the urgency of their mission, the trip out to the lab probably felt longer for Sid and Grace than it actually was. When they were about a minute away, Katie suggested they pull over and rearrange themselves in the car with the two mages ducked down in the back seat - the better to avoid notice from the security cameras in the lab's parking lot. With only three guards left at the facility, they were bound to be on alert for anything unusual. When they finally arrived, they parked at the far end of the lot. Peering carefully out the windows, Sid and Grace would see what looked like a fairly nondescript red brick building. They were on a relatively empty stretch of road, and every now and then a plane would soar past overhead on its way to or from the nearby airport. The sign out front read "Lerna Laboratories."

Before exiting the vehicle, Katie turned to Grace and Sid to explain what she was about to do. "I'm going to go take care of the guards. When I get back, I'll take you to the basement cells where your friends are being kept. We need to get them out of there as quickly as possible, so while you're doing that, I'm going to head up to the labs to activate the disinfection protocol. Once I've done that, we'll have ten minutes to get out of the building before it locks down and burns everything inside, so it's very important that we exit as quickly as possible. Understand? It's very important that we destroy the lab, and any trace of the virus left inside."

------------

Meanwhile, in the basement, Lena and Sera were unaware of what was going on above. It had not been a good week for the two of them, but they were hanging on. Weak and sick, their days were full of waking nightmares that felt all too real. Lena, in her concern for her Tradition-mate, had been sending out empathic projections of calm warmth and calm. It allowed Sera a few precious moments of rest that she might not have otherwise had.

At that moment, they were both blessedly free of the trap of those waking dreams, though for how long?

Hydra

[Edit: "Understand? We have to destroy the lab, and any trace of the virus left inside."

Also: "projections of warmth and calm." (Yeesh.)]

Lena Reilly

Since that moment when Katie appeared in her room a few days earlier, Lena has been like a caged animal. The smart thing would have been to play it cool and act like everything was still the same, but the Ecstatic is past the point of such dissembling. Like most of her Tradition, she is a creature who is both master and slave to the Nine Sacred Passions and with lucidity being constantly torn away from her with every waking nightmare, every bloody cough, she has lost the ability to act in her own best interests. Lost the ability to play nice and let then just take her blood and serve her empty platitudes.

Lost her ability to give. A. SHIT.

She may not be terrorized by whatever hideous hallucinations this disease can combine with her mind at this moment, but let's be frank, ladies and gentlemen...there is nothing worse it can conjure than the fact that she's going to die here alone in this hell-hole, wasting away to fucking disease while her friend does the same elsewhere in this very facility. They're Ecstatics who are about as far from Ecstasy as you can get and she has not made the life of Callum's little flunkies easy. She's ranted and raved, yelling to the camera things like "You didn't think I would find out, you piece of shit?" and "Come in here and I'll show you what disease is all about."

That is, when she's not curled up in the corner, sobbing and scared.

At the moment she's lucid. And at the moment, she's pacing, scratching at the sores that she's picked into her body. (They only make her mental state worse; they're so similar in her blurry vision to the lesions that are a part of Karposi's sarcoma). As much as her weakened body will allow; she's moving on pure Rage, pure Wrath. It will get her through and so help her, if her friends die she will figure out a way from the other side to make those involved pay.

Sid

It is with reluctance and great trepidation that Sid listens to Katie. She does so because she knows, she knew before she let her effect finally drift apart, fragile as a spider's web, that the woman told them the truth. Her intentions are sincere, she has only been honest with her. Sid still distrusts. Katie may very well be telling the truth - as she sees it. She may be helping her - because someone else is using her guilt to their purposes. Because soon, very soon, all four infected Mages will be inside the facility.

Still, what choice does she have? Her friends are inside and she and Grace will find them, they will save them, they will get them out.

While she's ducked down, tall body twisted uncomfortably so that she isn't seen, she sends a quick text. There's no time to access Ginger and make a broadcast as wide as possible, so instead Sid sends a message. It's a follow-up, actually, their more exact location sent to a Disciple Cultist just in case...well, just in case.

Sid is not the best at being sneaky, she's a scientist (or was, once upon a time) not a ninja. Still, she can scan her surroundings and let them know if someone is near or coming near. Hopefully.

Katie tells them they'll have ten minutes, and Sid frowns as she draws a small diagram on the inside of her wrist.

[Go go Gadget Life scan!]

Grace

After the adrenaline shock wore off, and Grace had finished venting her anger at Katie, there wasn't much to do but plan and wait on the car ride. She calmed down somewhat, but was still quite unnerved by the woman, and spent the time staring at her waiting for the other shoe to drop.

"Oh I understand. If that shit leaks out of your lab..." she says. 'Your lab', like she's still thinking of Katie as being on the other side.

She listens to the plan, and it's not half bad. Maybe somebody in their group wasn't a complete idiot, because they did have a disinfection protocol. They thought ahead.

So she ducks down with Sid in the back, "You letting people know where we are?"

Serafíne

The room is white and the walls are white and the walls and concrete and there is a door; you remember the door when it opens. It has a window that frames a view of the corridor.

The corridor is always the same.

The place has a rhythm that is internal and both unvaried but unpredictable. There are pipes in the walls, wrapped in concrete block, framed by drywall and structural steel. There is a hum. The hum is not a human hum and may not be a hum at all. It may well be the intense and immediate physical experience of soundlessness. Except for the low, insistent beeping of the heart rate monitor when it is connected or its higher pitched objection after it has been disconnected there is a sort of ambient nothingness that feels round, pregnant and full.

Sometimes Sera remembers that she should try to leave the IV in her arm. It is the only thing keeping her alive and she is now barely alive. She has not eaten in two weeks. Threw whatever they shoved through the prison-like hole in the door right back at those bastards when she was still capable of downing food, and has not been capable of eating for some time.

The lucid moments are the strangest. Worse, somehow, than the waking nightmares where she is torn apart from within; where she tears herself apart; where she is ripped apart, scissored open, consumed and consuming. Terrorized and terrified.

Lucid she is in a white room; alone, dying, so weak she can hardly stand. Except, as long as she can hardly stand, as long as she has the strength to so much as crawl, Sera refuses to lay around in that bed. Sometimes she drags herself to the door, leans then, slapping her hand open and rhythmic against the metal. Sometimes she curls up in the bathroom, between the sink and the toilet, taking some sort of comfort in the porcelain.

Its proximity.

Its familiarity.

That's where she is now; curled up in a semi-fetal position, shivering, involuntarily, from the climate-controlled cold in the room, wasted and spent.

Hydra

Katie had been quiet in the car, allowing Grace her outlet to vent. There was no attempt made on her part to defend herself or her colleagues. Everything about her appearance and manner suggested a woman weighted down with silent guilt. What could she say, really? Nothing. So she didn't try. Inside the lab, there were two dying women who'd spent the last week and a half in a world of sickening, claustrophobic torture. They were there because of Hydra. One of them from Katie's hand directly.

If Callum and the other members of Hydra (was the virus named after the group or the group named after the virus? did it matter really?) had found Lena's sudden change of heart suspicious, thankfully they hadn't seemed to pinpoint the source of it, because Katie's security access worked just as well as it always had. She jogged across the parking lot, coughing into a tissue as she reached the door and let herself inside.

Then all was still, apart from the ubiquitous sonic echo of the planes.

Five minutes went by. Maybe Sid and Grace would begin to expect some sort of trick. Or perhaps Katie had been found out and captured by her own people.

Another minute. Two.

Finally she reappeared, running quickly towards the Audi. She gave a wave to indicate that they exit and follow her inside. "I drugged the guards and turned off the cameras."

Assuming they were ready to follow, Katie led the way back inside the building, taking a path through a brightly lit welcoming area with an empty front desk and moving at a brisk pace down a long white hallway. They passed a couple of closed doors on their way to the stairs, but Katie didn't stop to offer a tour.

At the end of the hall, another locked door led down into the basement. Katie entered a code into the security system and the door unlocked, allowing them access. Then it was down a flight of concrete steps into another long white hallway.

And there they were. So close now that Sid, with her active life scan, would be able to feel the weak, unsteady pulses of her two friends in the locked cells. Lena was closer, followed by Sera at the end of the hall.

Katie unlocked both doors, working quickly as she ran from one to the other, hiding her next coughing fit against the sleeve of a raised arm.

"Remember, you've got ten minutes once I activate the disinfection process, so get them to the car as soon as you've given them the injections. I'll rejoin you as soon as I can."

This was what Sera and Lena heard as the locks on their cells clicked open.

Lena Reilly

Her attention snaps to the door when she hears that telltale click, eyes narrowed. She's past the point of trusting anything she sees or hears now; the waking nightmares have made that basically impossible. Even hearing Katie's words don't make her believe what she's hearing; her mind could easily be making this up in some fevered pitch of hope, or she could be the target of some new trick by Callum.

Frankly though, she doesn't much care. As long as she's got a way out of this room, it could lead into a wall of gunmen ready to blast her into oblivion. Callum well knows she's accept that over dying of this thing.

And so she takes slow, belabored steps, weezing as she does, toward the door. Just in case someone might be coming who wants to keep her forced in here (she wouldn't put that kind of mind game past them), she spits a bloody mouthful that she just recently coughed up into the palm of her hand. It may not be the most effective deterrent--she doesn't know if she'll be able to actually get it into someone's mouth or the life, and even if so they may be immunized against the Hydra virus--but people generally want to play it safe with HIV. She leans weakly against the wall and, with her free hand, she reaches out to open the door. Sure, her hand slips on the handle and she has to fumble a little, but she pushes it open and stumbles her way to

Freedom. Even if it's not freedom from this place, it's a minor victory. It's about all she's got.

Sid

When Grace asks her question Sid merely nods her head once, the movement very slight in the dark cramped back seat. And then they are waiting. A minute passes, two, but they might as well be hundreds, even thousands of years. Sera and Lena are in there, they're dying and if something goes wrong they won't even know that their friends are right there, were there, are trying to get them out.

Sid is silent through the wait as she runs over again and again the contents of her bag. What she has, what they look like, what she needs, what she hopes she doesn't need. A sort of desperation rises all around her, radiating from her every pore as she reaches out and finds each living creature within a radius of them. When Katie returns Sid does not relax. Her shoulders remain tight, every muscle taut with tension as she makes her way out of the car.

She follows the woman through the maze of the building's interior, hoping Grace is taking notes on their passage because Sid is taking out a needle and poking it into a small vial. Then she caps the needle in plastic and unwraps another, repeats the process. They have to be ready to go, from reunion to injection to run-run-run in a matter of moments.

Down the stairs and to the keycode and Sid passes a needle to Grace outside Lena's door. "Let her do it," she says, meaning Lena, who if she hasn't had to inject someone before has likely watched it done a hundred thousand times to herself. They're all sick, though, with Grace a little better. And Sid, the healthiest of them all, she beelines for the door to Sera's room, to Sera, shoving past Katie as soon as the door is open.

"Sera!" she calls, perhaps needlessly as she looks around, her heart hammering in her chest. She knows because she can feel it what she can expect, but knowing only prepares her for the visual. Sera, sick and curled up in the bathroom. Sid goes to her quickly and drops to her side.

"Sera," she says, and her voice is strangled, her throat constricting at the sight of Sera, so vibrant even when she was fasting, wasting away, all for what? Sid never asked. This time it's different, she knows. Sera is dying, but not for much longer, not anymore. "It's me," she says as she fights back tears of relief and tears of pain, pulling Sera toward her as she thumbs off the protective cap of a needle. "I'm sorry," she whispers, because she knows enough to know this, this place, it's bad to Sera and Sid's about to make it worse with one more needle's prick.

Grace

Her friends had been imprisoned here, dying. Hallucinating their deaths over and over again. Grace was a little afraid of what she might find inside. Would they be lucid, or crazed? Would she be able to help them get out?

The doors click, and Grace takes one of them. Lena's door. "Lena? It's Grace," she says, right before the handle jags and she lets go. Her voice is scratchy from the cough still, and she does have to lean her face into her elbow and give it a good fresh blood stain. But she doesn't look that bad.

Lena does. For all that Grace has been through herself, she stares for a second at the state of the woman in front of her. And then, just holds up that syringe that Sid gave her. "Sid found a cure Lena. We're going to be okay," she says in that weak little sick voice. But there's more than sickness in that wavering. It's like she's telling herself it's going to be okay too.

Serafíne

The door, opening. Or rather, first - the locks. The low tumble of cylinders, the scrape of metal-on-metal and the quiet immediacy of Katie's voice. The last handful of words, tossed over her shoulder to Sid and Grace. Caution or admonishment and Sera breathes out, lifting her chin and swinging her head to watch the shadowed edge of the door against the white-washed concrete walls. The vertigo is briefly overwhelming.

She fights the urge to retch.

There's nothing in her stomach, so the energy expenditure would be futile, anyway.

--

The wasted, skeletal creature that was Serafíne is struggling to stand as Sid pushes open that door. Has both hands on the cold toilet set and her head bent over, her long hair lank, greasy and damp. Dark roots clearly showing where the blonde dye ends, tangled ends falling forward over her shoulders into the bowl as, shaking, she pushes herself to try to stand.

Sid gets there first; sinks to her knees on the cold tiled floor of the small, industrial bathroom before Sera has done more than brace her hands over the toilet seat. It is ridiculously easy for Sid to pull Sera close, to tug her away from the toilet, as there's next to no strength left in her body and her whip-lean frame has lost all fat and more than a bit of muscle in the days since she was brought here.

"Sid." A drifting look, over her shoulder toward the open door. "I'm not hallucinating."

Her voice is raw. The words don't carry beyond the bathroom. Sera's hands are covered with bruises and a smear of trail of dried blood trickles from her left nostril over the mobile mouth that so usually twists itself into some sort of edgy, knowing grin. That spirit seems to be almost wholly eclipsed, but there's a spark of something brighter, seizing, angled but unbending at the shadow of the open door.

Sera endures the needle prick, then rises - rather heavily - with Sid's assistance, tearing out the IV for what one hopes is the last time.

They are half-way across the 'hospital' room when a sudden, geysering burst of raw something seizes Sera, and she reaches, grasps that rolling IV pole and throws it across the room.

Tries to throw it across the fucking room.

And then leaves it, god she's weak, the world spinning unpredictably all around her, working to remember how to breathe as Sid supports her on the way out of the room.

Hydra

This was the place that Sid and Lena had been living in since their disappearance: white concrete rooms (no, cells) with a hospital bed, a chair, a table and some medical equipment. The doors used to lock them in were heavy metal things that creaked from their own weight when opened. Inside, the rooms had once been clean and sterile, but now they reeked of disease and the coppery tang of blood and bile. It'd been about 24 hours since the rooms had been cleaned, so likely there were dark red stains on the painted floor or the sheets on the beds.

Lena and Sera were dressed in matching white t-shirts and grey sweatpants, which they barely filled out anymore despite the small sizes. They looked awful. Worse even than Grace had looked toward the end. Katie had been telling the truth when she'd said that both of them were close to death. Sid would be able to sense it instantly, the way the disease had eaten at them from the inside. The infection itself had reached a kind of climax point - like it was hovering on the brink of a final attack. (And jesus, what did this thing look like at the end? Did it waste its victims away to nothing, or was there some horrible finale in store?)

Katie didn't stick around to see the reunion. She was already halfway up the stairs by the time Lena opened the door to her cell. Soon, she'd disappeared, leaving the other four to their own devices. Grace with Lena and Sid helping Sera up from her collapsed position on the bathroom floor.

And then those life-saving syringes were brought out...

Had Sid really found a cure? It almost didn't seem possible. But look - Sid herself seemed almost healthy, and Grace, though sick, was a far cry better than either of the Cultists. So perhaps it really was true.

Lena Reilly

She narrows her eyes when she sees Grace, and she isn't sure within that spotty vision whether the woman she's seeing is really Grace, or just an overlay. The Ecstatic is covered in those pick-marks over her skin; her eyes are red-rimmed and unfocused and she's lost more weight than a person really should. Even in whatever amount of time it's been since she was last tended to, her clothes have been spattered with her own blood as she's coughed it out (itself even more dangerous than Hydra-tainted blood). And there's a tense moment where Lena looks at Grace with all the rationality of a rabid animal, when it almost seems like she's about to decide fuck it and deliver the biohazardous payload in her hand anyway.

But...she doesn't. This may not be Grace (c'mon Lena, be honest...probably isn't), but there is a sliver of chance that she might be. And if not...maybe this will be the needle that finally kills her. Dead or saved, she doesn't really care at this point.

So she reaches behind her into the room to flick the slimy, red-streaked phlegm in her hand into the room she just staggered out of, then shakes her head when Grace says We're going to be okay.

"Bullshit." She forces the word out through a raw throat, and takes the needle. She looks at it a second, then rips the protective cap off of the end and feels around on her arm for a vein. It probably takes longer than it should, but soon she pushes the sharp end in without reaction to however much it may or may not hurt, pushes the plunger down. "Don't touch me. Not safe."

"Where's Callum?" she asks as she drops the needle to the ground. More hateful words have never been heard coming out of the woman's mouth.

Sid

Someone will find out what those final stages feel like. There is at least one person infected who will not feel the pressure of a needle as Sid's cure is forced into his veins. Sid had seen to that, because she knew things about this virus even its makers couldn't. There is a good chance that it will still get out, who knows if someone Sleeping had somehow been infected while these four were still able to be out and about? Who knows how it will spread out from Eric, who Sid hopes with all of her might is lying twisting writhing as his own immune system fails him and his own creation kills him from the inside out. And Sid is fairly certain that someone is the one she senses upstairs.

Sid shouldn't take satisfaction in that, or at least most wouldn't expect it from her. She's so quiet, seems so timid and so shy, that must mean she's a kind, soft-hearted soul, yes? But these people, these strangers, they tried to kill her and her friends simply because of what they were and how they viewed the universe. But when Sid looks upward at the ceiling as though she can see through the floor to the rooms above a smile twists the corners of her lips, small and satisfied.

She doesn't dwell on it, though. No, Sid will not be completely satisified until they're sitting in Sera's kitchen again, eating cake and getting drunk or high or both, talking like there's nothing wrong. That day will probably never come, really, things will never be the same after this. They will never be okay again, not really.

Sid doesn't let herself think about that as she pushes the needle into Sera's arm, her veins all to easy to find now that there's so little between them and the surface of her skin. Sid tries to sound light when she says to Sera, "I'm not a hallucination," rather than No you're not hallucinating. She could still be for all the Sid knows. When the needle's saving payload is delivered, Sid casts it aside and pulls one of Sera's arm around her shoulders, bracing her. Together they head toward the door, but Sid pauses, waiting with Sera as that something courses through her, lets her get that out of her system. Soon (hopefully, if Katie can really be trusted) this whole place will go up in flames.

"I'm sorry it took so long," she says, her heart breaking on the words even though she knows they got here only as fast as they could. Still, there is guilt, because while they were here suffering who knows what Sid was in Luke's practice, protected. "Katie brought us. She said she's going to shut this place down. We have to hurry."

Grace

Grace's clothes are spotted with large bleach stains, and the jacket she has on has a few spots of blood where she's coughed into it. She's been there. But not any more.

Lena's clearly not herself, and while Grace certainly has a lot of anger towards the man, there are more important things to do, other than trying to find Callum right now. Such as get the fuck out.

"Callum's off laying a trap for Sid. It's the only way we could get in here -- he emptied the lab trying to get to her. But Lena, we have like 10 minutes to get out of here. The hydra's going to die in fire all right? They've got a failsafe that's going to blow this place away."

Serafíne

The room is going to peel itself apart from the inside out. Something will go wrong. Sometimes what you notice is the way the lines of the walls begin to weave themselves narrowly and of their own accord. Sometimes it is simply the way the light shines back at you, as if it was waiting for you to notice. The places where things go and where they go wrong are myriad and unsettling and each of these things has gone so very wrong for Sera lately. This room is distinct from every other hospital room and -

- god, in truth Sera hardly feels the prick of the needle through her skin. It is the least of the wounds she has endured. Sid assures Sera that she herself is not a hallucination and the only reason Sera believes her is that thus far Sid has burrowed her way through Sera's eyes to begin consuming her brain, or something just as shiveringly macabre.

So, Sera does not say anything else to Sid. Just nods, the gesture rough and dry, leaning on Sid as they shuffle out of the room. If Sera knew that there was someone else upstairs,

dying of this shit,

(yes, even Erich),

she might -

- oh, but she does not know. All she knows is how to stumble forward, half-supported by her friend.

Hydra

Flames. Sera had dreamed of flames - of fire. Blazing and hot and humming with the deep, resonant sound of an inferno. What she hadn't known at the time is what it meant - only that it held some connection to Katie's future. Now she could put the pieces together. This was it. This was the end.

They were getting out. They were going to destroy this place. Burn it to the fucking ground.

Lena wanted to know where Callum was, but retribution would have to wait. He was gone, along with most of the others. Wherever Katie was - whatever she was doing - they had no time to wait. She'd said she would meet them, and they'd have to trust her to do so. It was time to leave.

Lena Reilly

She stares dully as Grace tells her that Callum's not here. And she really doesn't pay attention to the rest of it--anything that Grace says after laying a trap for Sid. She starts moving in that moment past Grace, toward the exit. If he's not here, she doesn't want to be here. And so she starts to walk, with as much speed as she can muster (but really, it's more determination than speed), with one hand against the wall to support her.

And in truth, she still doesn't really believe this. Maybe it's the Technocracy; maybe they're Sid and Grace clones. Maybe it's hallucinations. Maybe she just injected herself with ebola to create the ultimate supervirus. Either way, she's still moving forward. There's just a point where your mind takes you to a space beyond fear. Even for someone who lives in it the way Lena does.

Sid

They make their way out into the hallway, their progress as quick as Sera can manage but still painstakingly slow. There are still hallways to get through and a car to reach and a Katie to (trust to) meet. She said the car would be a tight squeeze on the way back, and it had taken some effort on Sid's part not to suggest leaving her behind. But Sera. Sera wanted her to have a second chance and so Sid is going to let her. At least, she isn't going to hinder her, and to her, right now? It's pretty much the same thing as helping her.

Out in the hall she sees Lena and that gives her strength. Lena's alive, Lena's making her way out whether she knows it or believes it herself. This is going to work.

All the while, Sid keeps that net cast. She feels for the other patterns, already cataloging the ones she's found. Three guards sleeping, one person very ill. And those she knows. So far, so good.

They make their way toward freedom from this toxic nightmare.

Grace

Well, so much for a happy, or even tearful reunion. Lena's ignoring her, shuffling her way along the wall. But then, it's Lena who's suffering. Who is Grace to argue with the way she's dealing with it? Instead, she tries to play along. As she walks alongside Lena, not touching as requested, she vents.

"Callum is such a god damned fuckup. Using a virus like this? He could have killed everyone in the world, we're talking human extinction here. Sid found out Hydra's figured out a way to jump hosts."

Serafíne

She wants out. Out out out. That desire to get out out out is growing stronger, gathering momentum the further they go. There's the illusion of strength and Sid can feel Sera straightening, moving faster - which is not to say fast - but can feel the urgency of it beneath her skin. And everything else she's holding inside her, which radiates from her in subtle tremors as they move.

Down the white hallway and toward or perhaps even up the stairs. The threads of her vision are knitting themselves together in the back of her mind as Grace and Lena fall into a sort of step beside them, Lena holding herself up, Grace venting about Callum and the rest in ways that Sera herself can hardly comprehend right now.

"Are there other people here?" Sera asks, as they pass other doors; other windows, other rooms. The space has a haunting sameness to her and she cannot suppress the shudder that wracks her body as she says that, " - in the rooms. They should have a chance."

To escape, Sera means.

To escape, too.

Hydra

They made their way up the stairs, limping and stumbling. Sera asked after other prisoners, but there were no others. The other cells were vacant. Whatever the people here had been trying to accomplish, they'd started small. Perhaps Katie had been right about this being an experiment of sorts.

Meanwhile, the lifesaving virophage began to do its work in the Cultists' bodies, swimming through their bloodstream to attach and embed itself within the Hydra virus. It would take time for Lena and Sera to feel the effects of the cure, but Sid and Grace had reached them in time.

They would live.

At the top of the stairs, there was a (still-open) door leading to a long white hallway. On the ground floor, the construction was cleaner - proper walls and wooden doors and a tiled floor. The place looked just like the inside of any number of smaller science facilities. Maybe it had been the property of the government or some research company at some point.

As the four of them began to make their way down the hallway, Sid would sense the nearness of Katie's now-familiar pattern, along with the threading, erratic pulse of another (the one she'd assumed - probably correctly - was Eric) approaching them from inside one of the rooms to the right. A moment later the door pushed open, and Katie stumbled out into the hallway ahead of them with a man draped over her shoulder.

It was Eric. But the way he looked now was a far-cry from the way Sid and Sera remembered him. Not the beautiful wannabe actor with his just-perfect tan and gym-sculpted physique. Gone was the easy confidence and the glow of health. In the span of only one week (less time than it had taken for the others - perhaps the virus affected Sleepers differently, or perhaps, as Sid and Grace suspected, it was simply growing stronger) he'd become a pale ghost of himself, weakened and sickly and bleeding from nose and mouth and...

There was blood oozing from his ears, too. And when he breathed, they could all hear the choking gurgle of fluid in his throat.

Katie stumbled - almost dropped him. And when she righted them both she looked up with a panicked expression, knowing full well how the others were likely to react to the sight of the man leaning up against her in a barely-conscious daze.

"Please," she said. "He's the only family I have left."

When she spoke, Eric lifted his head and blinked, as though noticing the others for the first time. "What the fuck are they...!?"

Whatever he was going to say, it was drowned in a fit of coughing, and a fresh splatter of blood struck the wall.

"I'm trying to save your life!" Katie snapped. "Leave them alone. It's over. This is all over."

But whatever impending argument was about to ensue... whatever reaction the others may have had to Eric's appearance, in the end it didn't matter. It was too late. The man gave another cough, so hard this time that it wracked his entire body. He choked and coughed, and then he started to scream. Katie couldn't hold him any longer, and he collapsed onto the floor, curling into a ball as some kind of spasm worked its way through his muscles.

When he screamed, it sounded like he was drowning. And when he looked up and opened his eyes, bloody tears streaked their way down his cheeks.

"No no no no..." Katie started to cry as she crouched down beside him, pleading in desperation for some miracle that was never going to come. "Please, just a little longer. Eric!"

He gave one final scream, agonized and dying, and then an invisible vice clamped down on his throat and he could no longer take in breath. What happened next would seem like another hallucination to Sera and Lena. It so closely mimicked the nightmares they'd all been having. Patches of red opened up on Eric's face and arms as the skin pulled open and began to melt away.

It kept going, dissolving away the epidermis and the muscle... literally eating him alive. His eyes were huge and terrified as the spasms went through his body...

Until he literally melted away, leaving behind a bloody, skeletal corpse.

Katie didn't move. She sat there, crouched in a pool of her brother's blood with tears rolling down her cheeks, and uttered a frail, broken sound.

Lena Reilly

She keeps walking. Step by step. One foot in front of the other, away from hell and toward freedom. Of course, it was a temporary freedom at best for her because even if she did somehow make it out of here, one day she'll be back in a room just like it, looking much the same way and breathing her last. But even a brief respite from that...it's something.

It's hard, getting up the stairs. But she forces herself up. She's not going to die here and even if she was being cured by this concoction that Sid--brilliant, amazing Sid--had come up with, she didn't really want to get blown up either.

And then, just like that, there's Katie and the man she'd never met before. There's a moment's confusion in Lena's still-bleary mind before the whole scene starts to unfold. She weaves there a moment, leaning against the wall. She watches the whole thing unfold.

And when we say the whole thing, we mean the whole thing. She stares dully as the disease eats Eric and rips him apart, dissolving him into nothing but a mess of blood and a skeleton. Maybe deep down, she feels sorrow for the loss. Maybe there's some empathy left in her for Katie, knowing what that must be like for her.

Right now, she's just too burned out to feel anything but Rage and Hate. But it's telling (and perhaps encouraging) when she starts walking up to Katie, ducks down and struggles to slip her head under the broken girl's arm, to lift her up.

Forgiveness? Hard to say. But maybe, despite the fact that she does it all with the expression of a very angry zombie, the Ecstatic isn't completely gone off the deep end.

Grace

Grace hasn't watched a person die before. Not like this. There had been deaths at the theater, but she hadn't seen them really. And this, so much like one of her feverish hallucinations, really happening to someone else?

She can only make it a few steps before she starts to retch. It's not blood that comes up this time. This isn't the virus' doing. It's the terror of it all. That's what would have happened to her if not for Sid.

She would have been eaten like that.

Who does this, who makes a thing like Hydra? And then, who releases it, knowing that this is the result?

In between her spasms of nausea, she gets out the occasional "Oh God," as if she believed in a God, really. Who could, when this is a thing that exists.

Sid

When the door opened and Katie spilled out, Sid was already shifting closer toward the wall, and she was putting herself between the woman and her friend. She would protect Sera until her dying breath if Katie turned on them, if the sick one lunged at them.

And there they are, the pretty siblings, only one of them is looking considerably worse for wear. Sid knows she should feel bad, she should feel guilt for what she's done. She did that to him. She knew that the barrier that kept the Sleepers safe was breaking down. The cold twist in her stomach comes from something else. It comes from Katie trying to beg for her brother's life. She must realize how that request will go with them. Katie was spared because of Sera, and because she offered the aid they needed to get their friends out. Eric? Eric only tried to kill them. Eric turned them into lab rats. On purpose. Willingly. He'd said that it was nothing personal and maybe it wasn't, but probably it was. He had some personal vendetta (his nephew maybe? what it had cost his sister?) against the Awakened. If Katie wanted the cure for him, she could pry it from Sid's cold dead fingers. Because that's the only way he could be helped, if they killed the Orphan to get to it.

He can't do that, though, and they watch what these people had planned for them happen to him in fast forward. Sid watches, cold, satisfied, as Eric is torn apart by the virus.

And then her head snaps up, facing away from them. "They're coming. Three of them, two men and a woman," she says, and she looks at the others. Five of them, one healthy, four in various stages of sickness, one of them not wholly on their side. She looks at Grace. "We need to get out of here before the fire starts." She says it mostly to jar Katie, to remind her that their time is limited - provided she did as she said she would. She doesn't wait for her, though, the woman can stay and die by her brother's mutilated corpse or leave with them. Sid got what she came for, even got a little extra.

Serafíne

Strange how they all react up there, marooned in a bloodspattered hallway while a man is consumed from inside himself. Sid puts herself between Sera and Katie and Sera's confused, muzzled, not entirely with it and -

- all of that, she'll remember later. Like Grace, Sera too starts to retch. Unless Grace, what comes up from her abused body is little more than blood leached from the tissue lining her stomach, her throat, spat back into her mouth to spatter the flood with Eric's life's blood as he - dissolves, is eaten from the inside out. It just gets worse and worse, a horror show. Sid's attention snaps away Lena goes to help Katie rise and Sera, well, Sera disintangles herself from Sid's arms, slips in the blood and goes down to one knee, staring at Katie and crying with her bloodied tears and finding the spike in her own pain and Katie's pain, the atomized world, the net that knits them together. Sera's tears are coming more quickly now and they are bloodied and blood tinged and the world is a whirring chaos and her heart is still beating, the pulse thready but loud in her ears. Lena reaches to help Katie stand and Sera brushes the tears away from her cheeks with the edge of her palm leaving bloody streaks behind on her ashen skin.

Reaches out, and offers Katie a hand.

"We have to go."

Hydra

Despite everything, Lena offered Katie a shoulder to lean against, attempting to help the shocked and traumatized woman to her feet. But Katie pulled her arm back and shook her head, sliding in the spreading pool of blood as she crouched against the wall. She didn't speak. She just sat there, shivering and broken.

Then Sera offered a hand. Did more than that - reached out with her mind to offer the only form of comfort she was able to give. But it was no use - just as her effects had bounced off of Eric's shielded mind, so too did this one reflect away from Katie. The thing that someone had implanted into her brain - the thing that was meant to protect her - now kept her from receiving human connection.

She looked at Sera and shook her head slowly. Finally she mustered a few words. "I just need... a few minutes. With him. Go."

Some of the others were already making their way past the ruined corpse, but they were moving both toward the exit and the three people who were making their way quickly toward them. Three against five were decent odds, but how many of them were really capable of fighting, and what sorts of weapons did their enemies have?

It didn't matter. They were already there.

Only moments after Sid uttered her warning, three people appeared at the end of the hall, closing off the route to the exit. Two of them were unfamiliar: a man and a woman in their twenties, the former blond and the latter brunette. The man in the middle was Callum. All three of them had guns raised and pointed in their direction.

"Kathrine," Callum spoke without taking his eyes off of Sid and the others. There was a cold, venomous finality to the word. In his off-hand he held a phone, which he started to speak into, "I found them. We're at the..."

He stopped cold and stared at Katie, who'd pulled something round and palm-sized out of her pocket. I tiny LED light was flashing white just above where her thumb was pressed against what looked like some kind of trigger.

"Katie. If you let go, we'll both die."

Callum was trying to reason with a woman who'd just watched her last surviving family member get eaten alive by a disease they'd all unleashed onto the world.

Sid

Sera lets go and for a moment Sid stands there, watching her and watching over her. She's not going anywhere unless Sera and Lena and Grace are with her, but she will at least move to stand at the front. She will be their shield for now.

Because here they come. A man she's only seen on video and two others. Sid stands between them, hands clenched into white-knuckled fists at her side. Eric is the only one who has experienced what Sid is about to do, but Eric is a half-melted skeleton in a puddle of blood on the floor.

They may have guns, but these are Awakened Mages. The universe exists to be bent to their Will. And right now, Sid intends to bend Fate to hers.

She gets pulled away from and for some reason, in that moment, she looks hurt. Of course, she's not thinking clearly and there are a lot of things that could be (and are) running through her head. But she draws away, her jaw hardening when her offer to help has been rejected. She puts her hand against the wall and starts to walk.

But then, there is Callum. And there is--

Oh, who the fuck cares. THERE IS CALLUM.

She warned him. She really did. He chose to lie to her and to play on her good nature. And so where her hand leans, her fingers rise and fall in a thump.

Thump-thump, thump.

A beat. And she does it again. And she focuses on that beat, letting the heartbeat connect them all. Through time, through each other. She's making herself a conduit for surface thoughts to go from one person into her and through to someone else. Of course, one of those people is now dead. But when you're a Time mage, that's not so impossible. (Hey, what's a little more mental trauma in the sake of dishing some out?)

And so she shuts her eyes and opens her mind, attempting to connect past and present. Cold life and bloody death. Eric and Callum. Of course, she doesn't know there are Mind shields to deal with, but ah, well.

There's no connection. Something hard, finite, physical, technological in the between skin and skin and mind and mind and atom and atom, dividing Katie neatly from the ineffable and the infinite and then -

- more chaos. Someone just needs more time and other people have guns drawn and there's this strange, grim standoff in the once-sterile hallway around the corpse of the bright, animate man who thought his sister would get the joke about Sera's insane boots just a handful of weeks ago.

Sera does not remember getting back to her feet but somehow she's standing; she doesn't have the energy to say anything more to Katie than she said on one knee, blooded and sick-to-death, with an open hand and does not remember entirely how her mouth works except when the nausea overtakes her.

And now three people with guns are standing between them and the exit. Between Sera and the exit to this place.

Sera grits her teeth and shoves all her panic, her fear, her need-to-escape, right at the male stranger.

Grace

She gets a hold on herself. They don't have time. Certainly not enough time for her to fall apart. But then, Callum is there, and he's pointing a gun at them, and suddenly Grace really wishes she'd spent every weekend at Kalen's place learning how to use one.

Still, her fear doesn't stop her from engaging the man. "You... you did this," she says, and she means all of this. Lena and Sera drowning in blood and death, Eric being eaten alive. Not to mention her own tortures, or the future of a pandemic of Hydra. "How could you be so stupid?"

"You called it a masterwork. But it thinks it could do better. It's evolving, Callum. Look what your masterwork does," she says, and points to the bloody skeleton. "You'd see the whole world drown in blood before you'd be satisfied, is that it?"

Hydra

The air in the hallway grew charged with resonance as each of them in turn began to weave effects against the armed bioterrorists at the end of the hall. Having tried so many times to breach the minds of her captors and failed, perhaps Sera half expected her projection to dissolve on contact as it had moments before with Katie.

But no. She'd seen this man's thoughts before. And now her will struck his mind like a thunderbolt of fear and panic, giving the guard a brief taste of what she'd been living with since she'd arrived in this horrible place.

It worked.

"We have to get out of here!" he hissed in a panicked rush, and they'd all see the flash of anger pass across Callum's eyes (he still had not torn them away from the flashing orb in Katie's hand) as the blond man beside him turned and bolted away as fast as he could, running toward the door. He'd be out of the building in seconds.

Lena's effect was longer in the working. The world around her dimmed as she pulled on the threads of time, looking back into the last moments of Eric's death. Whatever had protected his mind before, it was gone, because Lena was able to sense and channel every horrible, visceral emotion surging through his mind in those final seconds.

But when she tried to channel them into Callum, she'd find the way blocked by what felt like a hard, heavy wall of iron. She'd have to try harder if she wanted to breach it.

Sid could feel the early workings of her effect coming together, but it wasn't yet strong enough to release onto the man and woman still standing at the end of the hall.

Grace, new to her powers as she was, had no such assaults. Nor did she have any weapons to protect herself with. But the fact that she didn't have a gun didn't stop her from confronting the man who'd done this to them all. And Callum? He still didn't look at her.

He was looking at that thing. And Katie was staring right back at him. As though everything they might need to say to each other could be said with a single look.

When Callum responded to Grace, his voice was soft and cold. "Do you really think I would unleash something like this without knowing exactly what it was capable of?"

At that moment, Katie smiled.

"Wouldn't your dad be proud."

Then she pulled her thumb off the trigger of the device in her hand, and in the same moment, Callum shot her. The bullet hit her in the center of her sternum, and blood began to bubble up from the wound as the thing in her hand emitted a hard sonic pulse. The people standing in the hallway would feel more than hear it - the way it moved through their bones and rippled the air.

All at once these things happened:

Katie slumped to the ground, dead, blood seeping out of her nose and ears.

Something exploded in the guns that Callum and the woman held, and the woman dropped hers with a cry as it burned her hand.

In the room next door, there was a sound of electrical devices and computers sparking and popping and shorting out. Anything electronic the mages were carrying with them sparked and died.

Callum's eyes rolled back into his head. His body convulsed as he dropped to the floor, blood seeping out of his ears and nose as it had with Katie. Something had burst inside of his head.

Then the lights in the hallway went out.

Serafíne

Then it is dark; everything is chaos. The background taste of ozone from the dead electronics is not enough to overcome the coil of bile and blood in the back of her throat but she is aware of it, and aware of the need to move.

Sera does not run. Cannot run, but jesus fuck she comes close to it. Charges for the door as fast as she can, aching and bleeding and no-longer-dying and also spent, exhausted, emotionally rendered.

Because Sid is moving forward now, slowly as she twists the fates around the man who is running away. With luck he'll find his shoes untied or the door stuck, barring his escape. Something something, there's always something.

It's traumatic to experience someone's death in a very real sense. To have your mind connected to someone else's in the moments when it winks out is to experience the emotional trauma of their passing. And when it's as horrible as Eric's death was...well, let's just say that Lena's mind buckles under the weight of dying from disease. But it will all be worth it if she can deliver that pain, Eric Draven-style, onto the man who she hates so very much. More than anything on this world currently, and possibly everything in the next.

And thus, to say that she is frustrated when it doesn't happen, when she comes up against a mind shield...well, frustrated doesn't begin to describe it. Those thoughts jam up like traffic on an unexpectedly-closed overpass, an infinite-car pile-up on the Lena Mental Expressway. She screams, in anger and frustration and panicked fear and pure, utter rage.

It's mostly instinct that her hand keeps that Thump, thump-thump, thump beat up, albeit frenetically now, like a frenzied butterfly rhythm. Maybe this is how someone invented dubstep. Certainly, you would have to be this wacked in the head to come up with such a thing.

And so she finds out the next closest target that isn't her friends. And she unleashes it on them full-bore, probably with a triple dose of her own hatred and fear and pain.

Grace

Her laptop and phone nestled into the bag on her shoulder popped and sputtered. On top of everything else, like a cherry, that.

Sera brushes past her, moving as fast as a nearly dead person can. And it's a damn good idea. Grace catches up to her, lends a hand, tries to help keep her up and running as much as she can.

"Come on, I'll get you to the car, lean on me if you need it."

Hydra

Sera had the right idea in running for the door. Not long after she started her unsteady, shuffling run toward the exit, a disembodied and coldly mechanical voice announced over the speakers:

"Three minutes until disinfection protocol."

When the remaining woman heard this, she snapped her head up in panic. Looking around at the carnage before her, she hesitated a moment, then turned and ran back through the front room, making her way to the door.

On her way out, she'd trip over the prone body of her colleague, who'd slipped and cracked his head hard on the front desk in his panicked (and it would seem - very unlucky) escape attempt. He was alive, but unconscious.

In her frustration, Lena attempted to channel her effect onto the fleeing guard, but she missed her target entirely and the effect went off inside her own head, cracking down with a horrible shock of psychic pain that radiated inside of her skull. For a brief, fleeting moment, she'd feel everything she'd intended Callum to feel.

Then it washed away, and she was left in a dim hallway with her friends urging her to leave.

They all go. And however they make their way toward the door, they'd find their path open. The three drugged guards in the lab were still unconscious, as was the one now sprawled on the floor. The woman was just disappearing out the door and into the parking lot. Wherever the rest of Hydra was, they hadn't yet made it to the lab.

Lena Reilly

When she couldn't directly pass on the dying sensation of Eric, she'd screamed. When it bounces back like a rubber band directly into her brain and goes off like a psychic shrapnel-filled IED, she slams herself against the wall and her mouth opens, but no scream comes out. It's like she's been shot straight through the lungs and would cry out in horror if she could, but lacks the capacity to do so.

It scatters away quickly enough though, leaving shadows behind that she'll have to sort out later. She doesn't have anything left to throw up, but her body is certainly trying as she straightens herself, staggering blindly forward after her friends, running on pure animal survival instinct.

Serafíne

Sera accepts Grace's help. Needs it, really. Whatever it is that is keeping her together at this point - will, perhaps - has started to desert her and there's something ragged and terrible about the way her wasted body moves, Sera who is also so entirely in-her-skin, self-assured and sensual and so many other things.

The terrible, shuffling run and Grace on one side and then run into the prone body of a man while a disembodied voice, cold and metallic, chills through the speakers. Sera breaks a bit away from Grace as they are passing the prone body of the man she tried to scare into fleeing - did scare into fleeing - almost literally trips over him and starts - shaking more, and crying, and cursing.

Shit oh shit oh shit,

she's saying, shit oh shit

barely keeping it together, shaking so powerfully and imploring Grace, "We can't leave him. This place is going to burn."

Sera grabs one of his arms and starts trying to drag the unconscious man toward the door.

Sid

She did it. Katie did what she said that she'd do. In three minutes this place is going to lock itself down and burn itself apart from the inside. Just like the virus created within its walls was designed to do. Just like what these people wanted to do to Sid, Sera, Grace, and Lena.

Sid wants them all to die, all of them, every last one. Every person who had a hand in this place and what it did to her friends, she wants them dead, dead, dead. That kind of hatred should scare her, but it doesn't. She was never the mouse people thought she was.

But she can't stop to make sure that all of these people get what they deserve. Lena's still back, and as much as Sid would like to stay and kick in Callum's chest cavity with her booted foot, her first and only priority is getting her friends out to safety. So she goes back, peeling out of her sweatshirt as she goes back, throws it around the Ecstatic's shoulders, giving her something to hold so she can safely urge her toward that door.

Where Sera is trying to drag a man toward the door. Sid reaches for her arm as she guides Lena forward and past her. "Sera you can't we have to go." Her voice breaks on the last word, breaks for Sera not for the man, Sid could not care less about the man. Tears well up in her dark eyes, threatening to spill over her cheest but she blinks them back, no no, not yet. She has to get Sera, her friend, who wants to save even one of these people who did this terrible thing to her, Sera who has that kind of forgiveness in her. She has to get her and they have to run.

Grace

Grace goes wide-eyed at Sera, as she -- even at her worst of health -- starts trying to drag a full-grown man out the door.

"Sera, we can't! I'm sick, you're sick. There's no way we can move him... Aww hell! We're not going to make it as it is!"

She and Sid both try to dissuade her, but Grace decides that a bit of physical urging is needed. She tries to grab Sera's hand, tries to drag her out of the building.

Serafíne

It's not forgiveness, just humanity. Grace isn't helping, just dragging her away and now Sera is pulled open, Grace tugging her from the unconscious stranger, Sera shaking, crying, struggling to pull a full grown man she wouldn't be able to drag at her healthiest and cannot begin to budge, with one hand.

"Wake up!"

Frustrated, the work is a lashing, visceral thing, an urgent push as his unconscious mind.

Hydra

"Two minutes until disinfection protocol."

The truth was, if they all tried, they could probably get the guy out the door before the building locked itself down. But Lena was in no shape to help, and Sid and Grace weren't likely to want to risk their lives to save a man who'd wanted them dead. Who'd stood by and allowed them to be effectively tortured by this disease.

It would seem that Sera was the only one among them willing to offer the unnamed man any kind of forgiveness. Or maybe she'd just had enough of death and misery for one lifetime.

It was probable that this man did not deserve her help. But forgiveness wasn't only about the other person. Sometimes it was just about holding on to your humanity.

So Sera did the only thing she could think to do. She lashed out with her mind... and woke the man up.

He sat up with a shock, gasping in breath. There was panic and confusion in his eyes as he scrabbled to his feet, nearly slipping and falling again in the process. It was a small mercy that he was too much in the throes of the fear that had been projected onto him to think to attack any of them. Instead he just ran for the door.

Serafíne

There's almost nothing left inside Sera as the working takes effect, jolts the man from unconsciousness to scramble to his feet and run. He takes off going past them and Sera is absolutely, utterly spent. Would not be able to move if Grace were not pulling her along behind. Would not, perhaps, remember how or why to move.

But Sid urges and Grace pulls and there is no longer an unconscious man between Sera and freedom, doomed to some terrible death-by-fire. So: move she does, at last,

crying, yes. All the way.

Grace

Sera wakes the man, and Grace supports her, tries to keep her moving. Well, now there is no dead-weight to drag out the door, but Sera's not moving without encouragement.

Grace doesn't cry. Oh maybe she will later, when the enormity of the situation and her life comes crashing down. But she doesn't cry now. Maybe she would, if Sera didn't need her to be the strong one, to be a person to lean on.

She just keeps going.

"Just a little bit more. We're almost there."

Lena Reilly

Man? What man? Lena, frankly, doesn't see any man. There might be a time where, if she did see him, she might help. That time might even be now, if she were cognizant and capable. She did try to help Katie up. But she's neither capable nor really all that cognizant of anything, and so she just keeps stumbling for the door, urged onward by Sid.

Once she's outside, she doesn't really bother to check her surroundings. She feels fresh air and it's barely six steps outside the door before her legs are failing her. She makes it as far as Sid can guide her--perhaps even to the car--before she's on her hands and knees on whatever surface she's on or pushed to, and then on laying on her side. She doesn't sigh in relief, doesn't thank anything for being alive. Doesn't cry, doesn't ask questions, doesn't talk. She just lays there, or leans there if nudged into a sitting position against something, with a deeply distant and faraway look.

Sid

That man hurt them. Sid doesn't know how much, she doesn't know what he may or may not have done down in the rooms below, but his connection to them is enough. He is guilty by his association with his maniacs. He is guilty of hurting people just to hurt them. Of trying to kill them. Sid knows what it's like to suffer at the hands who take joy in the pain of others. She has the scars to prove it.

She has a quiet, simmering fury to prove it.

Sera wants that man saved so badly she would risk her own life to make sure he got out. In the end that's all that saves him. It's all that stops Sid from jumping on him as soon as he stands up, all that keeps her from stomping down with all her might onto his ankle, hoping to break it, hoping to hobble him and trap him in here. Death by fire is too kind.

Instead, Sid stands behind Sera, fists clenched at her sides, her whole body shaking with the desire to snuff out that tormentor. Her eyes track the man as he goes, and for a moment Sid is too furious to move. He's getting away, he's going to get away and live his life as though none of this ever happened while they live with the scars, the memories, the pain and hurt.

Only when Sera and Grace and Lena are nearer the doors does Sid finally force herself to move. She passes a hand over her face as she moves, one step, two steps, three, suddenly stiff limbs loosening with each step until she's running, hurling herself out of the building with a strangled cry of grief and rage. She doesn't stop, doesn't turn to look back, doesn't turn to look for the two that escaped. They may have to deal with them later, but first they have to get away from this place.

She heads for the car that brought them here, thankful that Katie left the keys behind for them. She doesn't look at the others as she makes sure the doors are all unlocked, and they're free to go. Unless there are very strong objections, Sid will take them all to Luke's.

Hydra

The clock was counting down. Time running out. But there was the door just ahead, and one by one (or two by two) they all made their way past it and out into the crisp late-October air. Outside the sun had gone down, and the parking lot was dark and empty apart from Katie and Eric's Audi and the back of a black van that was presently peeling its way onto the road.

They were getting away.

Sometimes in life, there were no clean endings.

A minute and a half after Sid let the glass door slide shut behind her, the locks on the building clicked shut, moved by some automated protocol. For a moment, everything was still.

Then the door and the windows shattered, exploding outwards in a bright cloud of flame. Inside, bodies of those living and dead roasted. Electronics melted and scorched. Paint peeled from the walls and dissolved in the heat. Glass vials popped.

The building burned. The virus burned.

Turned out it was fire that killed the Hydra after all.
