The Church of the Good Shepherd

Thursday morning - after the early morning mass, after the drop-off rush at the day care center, but certainly well before noon vespers - Serafíne comes sauntering in to the Church of the Good Shepherd, escorting both Elijah - in his vest and suspenders, with his pocket watch - and Jennifer, dressed all in white.

She stops at Rosa's desk, of course, and might even rest her ass on it and she gives Rosa this quicksilver smile that is nevertheless framed by a degree of tension she does not realize has entered her body. Has been there for hours, or perhaps days.

"The old man in?" Sera asks Rosa, and she knows she is because she can feel him in his office, but she lets Rosa check in with Pan anyway before sending them back.

Well, sending Sera back, because she tells Jennifer and Elijah that they should Wait here a moment and then she slips back on her own for a private word with the priest.

--

Alone, Sera confesses her concerns about Jennifer to him. What she read in the girl's mind, and what the girl admitted to her. Tells him that Jennifer understands magic - quintessence and avatars and nodes - but does not know what the traditions are. She is awake - he can feel her out there, her purifying resonance - and seemed to connect the word chorus with traditions, but she learned everything she knows from her mother and father, who seem to have been at the center of a cult. She never knew her father's name. He's on the lam, now, wanted by the FBI. Her mother is in prison. Her 'community' is dispersed, but she still believes that she will be sacrificed at age 21 to the goddess within. Which makes Sera say What the fuck about seven hundred times. At the least, Sera wants to know if the girl is - well - corrupted, despite the seed of her purifying essence. At best, well: what the fuck, Pan. What the fuck what the fuck?

We got today.

Serafíne

The first night they came out there, they broke in.

"Broke" in. The one-lane blacktopped road up through the hills was unplowed, bisected only by a few sets of tiretracks. The graveled drive leading up to the one-bedroom cabin absolutely pristine, except for the impressions left behind by the minor avalanches of wet snow sloughed off the branches of the evergreens lining the drive and Dan's knuckles were white, piloting the reckless old Econoline up into the mountains over the icy roads, snow churning the beneath the tires.

He found the key tucked neatly in a fake rock hidden in the diminished woodpile. All the wood wet, covered in melting snow, the tarp - unweighted - blown up against the back deck during some recent storm. Unlocked the doors and then cut his way through the drifting snow, knee deep in some places, to lift Sera out of the van and carry her inside, because what the fuck did she do with her shoes?

The next morning, he went down in to town to find and pay the owners their rent for the next month. Enough that they were willing to displace the late May weekend reservations they had already taken in. Then further away, in to the city to pack a pair of bags and load up on supplies. She was sleeping when he left, and still sleeping - on the couch where he left her - when he returned.

--

A few days have passed, since. The snow has melted, except on the highest peaks visible in the distance. The creek behind the cabin is swollen with snowmelt, rushing fast and choked with debris and the sun has a watery immediacy where it filters through the pines.

Sera has a change of clothes, now. A few changes of clothes, see, and Dan managed to unearth her hiking boots from somewhere deep her in closet and they have been here long enough that the place is starting to feel lived-in. Fishnets draped over the shower rod in the bathroom, blankets piled on the couch in the living room where they sleep. There is a single bedroom, but they leave it alone.

Yesterday she had a feeling strong enough that Sera made Dan drive her all the way back to the chantry, but she wasn't gone long before she came hiking back through the grounds, nose bleeding, a spreading bruise on her temple from the solid blow the snap-back of reality gave her for her trouble.

Tonight, she is sitting on the steps leading up to the deck, wearing a short black denim skirt, fishnets, and hiking boots, a black lace halter beneath a cropped leather jacket, feet planted, one hand loose around the neck of a whiskey bottle between her lefts, resting on the step below. Smoking a cigarette.

The van is gone. Dan's running an errand in to town. He promised to get some dry firewood and maybe some starter - something that would let them build a fire in the firepit in the side yard.

Sera smokes slowly. Meditatively. The woods are quiet.

Sometimes, sometimes, she thinks about the stars.

Pan

This time last year maybe a little later it all starts to blend together after a while and they were all different people back then different bodies some of them even but this time last year whenever the red Tacoma came out from the city it was with hope of news or the bearing of it. One time the priest came to the campfire drenched in his own blood. Snap-back of his own.

That's not why he's here. He's here to check in on Sera. Because he was there and she needed him then. She doesn't need him now. Maybe he's told her this already. That he's proud of her.

Sera knows he's coming. This shouldn't come as a great shock. Hard to shock a Time Mage anyway.

Cowboy boots crunch in the gravel and when he comes upon her in the backyard his hands are in the pockets of his jeans. Jeans today. It's Saturday. They are not black. They're blue denim and if he gets blood on them oh well. That's why we have bleach.

"Hola linda," he says at the bottom of the steps. He pauses. "What're you doing out here all by yourself, huh?"

Serafíne

Sera is a little bit pale beneath her native tan today. The bruise lingers, a mottled assortment of ugly, healing yellows and deeper purple tones. She has chased away the halo of a headache with magic and self-medication and she knows he is coming. Perhaps she knew it in the back of her throat when she woke up this morning. Perhaps she knew it a year ago, more or less, when she launched herself out of the front door and threw herself at his back, refusing to let him leave.

That they would come back here.

That she would change.

That he would, too.

--

Sera smiles at him, the crest of the expression has a winsome and quite deceptive fragility. Doesn't she always seem like she's on the verge of breaking; doesn't she always let herself be shattered, and survive.

And now she's here, drinking. Smoking, alone yes -

The supple curl of her left shoulder as she takes another drag and stands up, and stomps down the steps until they are close, and offers him her cigarette without thought and expects him to take it, and stands on the bottom step so that they are nearly of a height (though she is in her hiking boots, which do not give her a boost) and he is taller even when she cheats like this, and she wraps her arms around his shoulders, smelling like clove-smoke and whiskey and pine tar and clear, fresh air, and just holds on, the way she does,

until she lets go,

the way she does,

and quirks a smile up at him.

"I'm not really by myself. Dan's went to town. The wood's all wet so we couldn't get a fire going. So he's picking up firewood.

"How'd you know I was here?"

Pan

First he takes the cigarette but the cigarette isn't what he came here for. When she comes in for an embrace he lets her puts her arms around his shoulders even though he's the bigger one and he's almost always the stronger one and when people embrace Father Echeverría they are looking for comfort from him.

After a heartbeat Pan puts both arms around her careful that the cigarette is aimed out and he lets her go when she's ready. Squeezes her elbow as they part and drags off of the cigarette and hands it back to her.

That spice kick of the kratek doesn't surprise him anymore. He knows what she smokes.

How he know she was here. He quirks a half-a-grin and turns so he can lean a hip against the railing at the bottom of the stairs and look out over the dormant fire pit with her.

"Magic," he says. Like some private joke. Didn't he find Leah by praying on his knees for hours and hours until clarity came to him like a shotgun blast. Speaking of magic: "Before I go, we'll dry the leña, huh? The firewood? Put it under a tarp or something so it don't get wet again. Supposed to rain tonight."

Serafíne

Sera smiles up at him and takes the cigarette back, and takes another drag and glances slant-wise, through the weathered wooden railing, over the muddy ground strewn with shed pine needles. Breathes in the scent of him and the light of him and he says that it is supposed to rain tonight, and she glances back up at him then, her head turned in half-profile, the sharper lines of it, the soft fuzz where her head is shaved and the wilder, wind-whipped curls, and she would like, very much, to kiss him,

and she holds that want inside her body, feels it full against her tongue, in the back of her throat, because - oh - she adores him, and not the way he adores her,

and that's fine, too.

The expression on her face is soft and yes, shadowed, and sweet and she has one arm wrapped around her waist, her bare skin, the suggestions of her tattoos mostly shadowed by the cropped leather jacket, and her mouth quirks wider when he says magic, and she turns around, climbs the steps to lead him inside, her gait unconsciously hip-swaying.

He'll dry the firewood before he goes.

"You wanna come in?" she asks as she heads back up the steps, pausing only to grab her whiskey bottle as she passes it. "We have some leftover empanadas if you're hungry."

Pan

"I am, yeah. Thank you."

In they go. He has brought nothing with him but his own presence and his presence is enough. Takes a humble person to admit that they are still important to the people around them. To relieve another suffering is a powerful gift and even when he does not Work he has that power in him. The priest is a persuasive and magnetic personality and he does what he does not to secure himself a place in the eternal good graces of his Lord but because he believes that this is why he was given a second chance.

So he's used it. He's going to Hell anyway but that don't mean he's gotta throw in everything he's got left and say fuck it and get up from the table. Did that once before. He stays where he is because he wants to. Because as much blood as's been spilled already it's the right thing to do.

They go inside. The place smells shut up but not the way something abandoned smells shut up. Pan goes into the kitchen and he tests the stove makes sure the pilot light still works and if Sera wants to make him a plate he's just going to get right on out of her way.

"How you holding up?" he asks. Because it's been a year. Because he never asked her this then.

Serafíne

Before they go inside, Sera takes one last drag and offers Pan one last drag, his solid body framing hers as she snuffs out the clove in a handy ashtray before she reaches for the front door; or maybe he opens it for her and either way they're inside.

The place is so fucking plain. Plain in its way as the rectory in which he lives. The spare kitchen with two photographs mounted on the fridge and three postcards, where he makes tea and sits with the ladies from the League of Mary when they have suffered reversals or loss. When their rosaries are not enough to spare them.

Plain pine, whitewashed walls. The built-in sofa and the old CRT television on a knotty pine stand. Galley kitchen that is too small for the pair of them, which does not stop Sera from crowding in behind Pan as he checks the pilot light and tests the stove and she shucks her leather jacket because it is warm in here, the blast of warm dry air, and beneath it she that cropped lace halter. The scrawl of her tattoos on her skin. SERENDIPITY up her left ribs, revealed and concealed and revealed again, as she does busy herself making him a plate. Empanadas from a foil takeout on piece of ovensafe pottery, covered again in foil and slipped into the oven he tested for her.

"I'm cool," she tells him, when he asks her how she's holding up, and she says it with this spare no-quarter kind of smile as she looks up at him, and it is true. She is cool. "What about you?"

Spins on the balls of her feet, leans back beside the warming oven, and crosses her arms beneath her small breasts.

"Thinking about going back to London, soon."

Pan

Once she sets about her bustling Pan gets himself right on out the way. Doesn't take phobic pains not to make contact with her. She's seen the picture of his son and seen the easy way he stands with his son and knows that even celibate as he is denying himself so many things Pan is not afraid of other people. Touch is something humans need. Without it they wither away. Even Christ needed comfort at the end of His life.

So he lays a hand on her arm like to secure their orbital paths and makes his way around her. Moseys on out the galley and wanders around the scant living room. Hands tucked into his pockets not touching nothing. No wonder she wants to sit outside even though it's cold out.

What about him.

"I'm cool," he says and the smile is mostly in his voice. He doesn't feel like smiling when she's so quiet.

She's thinking about going back to London.

"For how long?"

Serafíne

There are blankets and the like twisted and mounded up on that built-in couch and the door to the bedroom is still closed and absolutely undisturbed and the cheap knotty-pine coffee table has last night's drinks and this morning's coffee and yesterday's or maybe tomorrow's skimpy black lingerie on top of a November 2013 issue of Field and Stream and there's a black cocktail dress tossed over the left arm of the sofa and a twee hard-sided suitcase open on the floor, all rumpled, and an unopened bag of 'Smores flavored Goldfish Grahams and when he touches her, that pivot in the kitchen, Sera smiles but does not in that moment lean into the touch. Nothing to be done once she slips the plate into the oven on warm, so Sera grabs Pan a bottle of water from the otherwise mostly-empty fridge and follows him into the living room and gives it to him as she passes him on her way to the couch, where she curls up in the L, because of course she would, with her whiskey in her hands and her dark blue eyes on him.

"Not long. Maybe just - long enough to remember it, you know? Been thinking about it for a while, now."

The slightest curve of her mouth as she looks up at him.

"When's your birthday?"

Pan

This seems to him a reasonable explanation for traveling to London. Shining light on a dark space. Once he'd advised her that she may want to do this one day if she felt as if something was behind her and she couldn't put a shape to it but that was before he got himself tore up by dogs standing between her and them and nearly dropped dead when a blood vessel burst inside his head.

So he nods. Doesn't tell her one way or another what he thinks she ought to do but Sera can remember can't she. That Pan doesn't believe in not remembering if a body's got a choice in the matter.

When's his birthday.

"Ah..." Think. Like his kid didn't send him a card. Takes a swallow of water and sets it on the nearest free flat surface. "The second of April."

Serafíne

"I missed it," she says quietly, this kind of regret lacing her voice. Then, the edge of a neat little shrug, the delicate curl of her bare shoulder.

The smallest of smiles as her eyes search his face. "Missed mine, too."

God, how she adores him. The truth of it is so absolutely naked on her face.

Pan

"Está bien," he says.

This to both. Who cares about birthdays. One's own birthdays is never important.

"Eh? We got today. I'm grateful for that."

Serafíne

"Me too."

The room is starting to fill with the scent of warming empanadas, though. Even Sera, fucking Sera - and doesn't she seem almost sober tonight? Knows that that is all she needs to get them reheated. So she's slithering from her nest on the couch and striding across the small living room to the smaller-still kitchen and opening the oven and pulling out the warmed-up plate, hand wrapped around the edge with a dishtowel and carries that over to the couch and coffee table.

The room has not changed much since they were here, a year ago or nearly so. The room has not changed much since then but it has been inhabited by stranger after stranger, and clear as the shut-in air seems and simple and simply-ugly as the furnishings are Sera is aware both of the time that has passed and the people who have passed with it, and equally as aware of the sharp and lingering edge of the memories beneath her skin. They are still mostly-packed away, neatly folded together inside her body, but sometimes it feels as if her blood is pooling around them, or inside them, and since she came out here, some days feel strange and some days feel stranger and some days feel absolutely ordinary.

Sera slides an arm through Pan's as he eats. Leans her head against his shoulder.

Tells him about the night she came out here. How briefly and wholly wrapped up she was in the resonance of memory, the dream of the dead, and how Grace didn't or couldn't understand, assumed - necessarily perhaps and wholly as one must - that Sera's pensive comment was an invitation to ordinary conversation, how many of them there are now, who do not or cannot or will not understand.

Tells him other stories, ordinary ones. Some hole in the wall barbecue in Rio during Carnivale and this friend of Dee's who plays the theremin and how sometimes she feels a stitch in the joint of her thumb. Asks him if he likes the empanadas and smiles quiet when he says that he does, because they are delicious, because Dee made them and she is a genius. Wonders what Leah is doing, and how she is doing, now.

She's tired, Sera. Not physically tired; it is merely the ebb of her Will, and she tells him that story too. The spiders and the tome and the talking fox and he could be forgiven for believing that all of that was a hallucination because Sera thought it was a fucking hallucination until Lena decided, oh I don't know, to summon the giant killer spiders in their direction and on, and on.

Dan returns, eventually.

They build a fire in the firepit outside. Pan dries the firewood and he and Dan pull the tarp over the woodpile and Sera drinks, as she does, and stays so very close to him until it is time for him to go. Then she wraps her arms around his neck and holds on to him for a very, very long time.

Very, very drunk.

Ian

Ian was in the park tonight. It was spring, and the air was warm, and the smell of the grass and the lake and the trees made for a more appealing backdrop than the ever-familiar mirrored walls of the practice rooms at the dance hall. Certainly it was more appealing than the gym (though it certainly had its sights,) and the sharp, stale odor of old sweat that was always imprinted into those spaces.

It was late enough that the park was fairly empty. Most of the people occupying its spacious landscape were evening runners or couples out for a stroll after dinner. At present, Ian was occupying space on the open lawn in front of one of the lakes, moving across the grass barefoot and shirtless as he practiced movements that looked like they might have either been a dance or some kind of choreographed martial art. Behind him, the last warm rays of the setting sun reflected off of the water and lit a golden halo around his silhouette.

He was focused here, like this. Different that Serafine had seen him last. More withdrawn. Not thinking about how he looked but on what he was doing. There was an honesty to the body that was not there in speech. The way it moved and responded. The way his lungs drew breath. The way his heart beat. The way the grass felt beneath his toes.

[How graceful is he being tonight? Dex+Performance]

He must be lost in that dance. By the time Ian becomes aware of her presence, Sera behind him, seated on the spine of a park bench, her feet bare (except for her ever-present fishnets) on the splintering wood. Her combat boots are on the seat of the bench beside her feet, a small canvas backpack covered in printed sugar skulls sits rather neatly on the toes of the boots.

Sera is dressed in a short and rather sweet pink dress, with a small patterned print of tiny white daises and tiny yellow bumble dotting the cotton, though at some point she has become either overwarm or immodest, as she has stripped out of the bodice of the dress, and down to her bra. Which is naturally black lace layered over hot pink accents, with a smattering tiny pink bows. Her hair is loose and curling and blonde, and frames her face in a half-tangled waterfall across the left side of her face. The right, of course, is shaved and dark enough to demonstrate quite clearly that the blonde comes from regular applications of bleach or peroxide.

Sunglasses cover her eyes.

She's smoking a cigarette, which smells of spice as much as tobacco, and she does so with this negligant confidence that feels natural, physical, entire.

"The fuck is that, anyway." She asks - it is a question, though her voice does not rise at the end of the phrase - when his body language changes enough that she can guess that he knows she's there, and watching either him or the sunset or the sky and the way the sky changes, the city outlined against it as the day's warmth leaches away. Exhale, all this smoke. "Jujitsu or some shit?"

He did, in fact, notice that Sera was there. Less in the forefront of his awareness and more as a peripheral side-note. He heard her approach. Smelled the spice-infused smoke of her cigarette. But he didn't stop what he was doing to look at her. Not even when she asked him what the hell he was doing.

The figure he cut was one of sleek elegance, framed as he was by the light bathing over his skin. But the movements weren't practiced. More of an experiment than a performance. He was trying things. Warming up and testing the way certain motions flowed through his limbs. It wasn't until after Sera mentioned Jujitsu that he pushed himself into a jumping spin that was much more ballet than fight choreography.

He pulled it off, but the ground was uneven and he landed bad on one ankle when he touched down. The line of his mouth tightened with irritation (less at her than at his own mistake) and he stopped to stretch his foot and roll the ball of the ankle to make sure that it wasn't injured.

He didn't actually answer her question.

"You know, I'm a bit surprise the police haven't issued you a citation by now. Not that I'm complaining."

He strolled closer to the bench where Sera sat with her boots and her backpack, regarding her with an expression of casual interest. Judging by the way he was dressed (in nothing but a pair of soft track pants,) the dancing hadn't been a spur of the moment impulse.

"It'll be a dance. At some point. Right now I'm just fucking around."

Ian

[Edit: "I'm a bit surprised"]

Serafíne

"A citation for what?" Sera is asking as she inhales another lungful of smoke, holding her cigarette with a sort of thoughtless elegant. She's leaning forward, dark glasses perched on her aquiline nose, elbows braced on her knees, which are knocked together. Her fishnets are patterned: intersecting diamonds that have not yet been torn - deliberately or otherwise - held up by black lace garters that dip down from beneath her short skirt.

"Fucking amazingly good taste in pretty much everything that matters?"

There is something about that posture that feels like a cake, collapsing in the rain. Something boneless in the way she holds herself. There is none of his feline sleekness to her, but rather something else: a kind of surrender to the world and all it brings her.

She is, at least, aware of him behind those glasses though. A moment later she's lifting her chin, dropping the cigarette off to the side to flick away the ashes as she asks, rather more quietly - "You okay? That looked like it hurt."

Ian

Ian probably wouldn't have agreed that Sera had amazing taste in everything that mattered. But then, they were different people with different tastes and different ways of measuring importance. Sera was there in her half of a dress and her lace bra and her sunglasses, smoking a cigarette and holding herself like her very being existed in a perpetual state of blissful surrender.

And there was Ian, who typically dressed as though he'd just stepped off the page of some glossy photo shoot, and who had never once exhibited anything remotely akin to an urge to surrender. Not to the world, not to another person... not to anything. He was a creature of control. Even in the moments when his flaws showed, there was still this sense of calculation. That he was analyzing himself - running the moment over in his head and his muscle memory so that the next time he might reach a little closer to perfection.

They were different creatures. Both of them beautiful. Both of them elegant in their way. Ian looked a little less polished like this, but also more feline in the way his skin and muscles moved. The way his feet balanced on the ground.

"I'm fine. It happens a lot."

That's the thing people tended to forget about dancing: how much pain went into the final product. Sprained muscles and bloody feet and aching tendons. You had to be a certain type of person to embrace that as a part of your daily life.

He was sweating right now. And the sweat did not smell like cinnamon and rose petals, but it didn't smell bad either.

"Feel like dancing with me?"

Serafíne

"I can't do that shit." The creature returns, mutters around the dark blue paper of the filter, really, before she takes her last drag and cranes herself back and down to stub out the cigarette on the stone frame supporting the wooden slats, before she flicks the filter into a nearby trashcan. This breath she holds closer and deep than any of the previous breaths, holds it until her lungs ache, if she she were getting stoned, then exhales it all in a cloud of something-like-laughter.

Glances down at her right shoulder as if she were surprised to find it there, or surprised by the shadow her body casts against the grass, or surprised by the grass, the fact of it, the way the concrete supports are set into the ground, the strange odor of teh night around them, which is green and quiet and dry and sunsweet and nightdark all at once.

"That twirly jumping shit. But sure - " and she looks up then, Sera. Right at him, though all Ian sees of her eyes is his own reflection in the glasses. "I'll dance with you."

Ian

They had no music to dance to, but perhaps that didn't matter. It was almost night, and no one was around to watch them, and the sun made the lake glow burnished copper for a few more glittering moments before the light finally dimmed. It was a wonder that Sera could see at all past the dark lenses of her glasses, but in an open space like this one could navigate with other senses. For instance: there was a touch when Ian reached out and took her hand. A pull as he drew her to her feet and into his gravity.

"I suppose I can deal with that. Just try not to step on my feet."

The sound of his smile carried into his voice.

They had no music. But they hand the wind, and the lapping of the water, and the distant ambiance of the city. They had their heart beats, like a pair of living metronomes. Less controlled, but more vibrant. Ian led them onto the grass and raised their conjoined hands, giving Sera a slow spin like they were in a ballroom instead of a park. Then he dropped his hand to her waist and pulled her into his side.

Like a point of balance for her to move into and away from, Ian broke the contact and stepped away. Not far, but enough that Sera could move as she chose. Enough that he could dance around her without tangling their limbs.

[Ok dice, let's do this. Give me what you got.]

Dice: 8 d10 TN6 (1, 4, 4, 6, 6, 8, 8, 9) ( success x 6 ) [WP]

Serafíne

(oh, does she step on his feet? -2 dice. Difficulty 8!)

Dice: 4 d10 TN8 (2, 3, 4, 7) ( fail )

Serafíne

Nothing is quite that smooth on Sera's end. She's on the back of the park bench, and half stands, half-stumbles off her perch as Ian offers her his hand. Her own is warmer than one would think, this brace of bracelets framing her spare wrist, a leather cuff wrapped with spikes that seem sharp enough to cut skin, and heavy enough to do real damage in the hands of someone with ill intent. A bicycle chain wrapped severally around her forearm. A scattering of multicolored bangles, all pasted mirrors and woven beads. A slim bronze ring on her forefinger, and a silver bar bridges her middle and ring fingers like brass knuckles, and she's inhaling, laughing a bit at the delicious absurdity of dancing on the grass in the park without music, without an audience, without reason.

God, she's drunk. He can tell that as soon as he hands her down from the bench, and she stumbles, not quite to one knee but stumbles into him, half-righting herself before he guides her into that spin.

If he smells of clean sweat (not cinnamon and rose petals), up close Sera smells like her cigarette, all sweet smoke, and something else that makes her rather deliciously liquid as she finds her feet somehow beneath her and somehow on grass and the world somehow spinning as Ian takes her hands and spins her around and then brings her in close to his side.

There's an art to partnered dancing and if Sera ever knew it - well. Blame the alcohol. Despite his admonition that she not step on his feet - she steps on his goddamned feet. Ian's lucky she's barefoot, and slight, because as soon as she realizes she's stepped on his feet she sort of wants to do it again! Because she's spinning and his feet are moving and her breath is catching in her throat and the world is all rapid, lurching movement and she just wants to keep spinning and spinning like a -

No wait. Her feet are planted and she has lost her (thankfully temporary) fixation with stepping on his as if they were not dancing but were playing some absurd version of whack-a-mole and she has stopped spinning she has stopped spinning she has stopped spinning - that seems quite nearly objectively true to her so she keeps telling herself that truth - as she stands in the center of the circle he creates and turns to follow the flashes of his movement as he starts to -

- Jesus what the fuck was that?

Oh, Sera is smiling. This lovely, drunken, I-don't-know-which-way-the-world-is-moving smile, and she's not really dancing because she only really dances where there's music to insinuate itself beneath her skin but she is moving, turning to follow his arc of movement around her, stumbling a bit, getting more and more dizzy as she goes.

"You're fucking incredible." She tells him. "I think I'm gonna puke."

Ian

There was this moment... between the fluid playfulness of that little spin and the point when Sera had to stop dancing because she thought she might puke. This tipping point when Ian just... fell into his skin. Like it was that easy. Like maybe all he really needed was to stop over-thinking and just have fun.

(To just... surrender.)

There were only two things in the world that brought that out in him.

So when Sera stepped on his foot, he just gave her this challenging grin, like he knew she was playing a game and he wasn't about to let it knock him off-balance. Even messy like this, laughing and spinning and falling into him, she had this wild, drunken beauty. Such a stark contrast to the way he danced around her. The way his motions flowed with bone-deep instinct and natural grace. She stepped on his feet, and he used it, leaning into her and jumping away like it was planned. This was more the way he danced when he was at a club. Freestyle and hip-hop and just... enjoying the moment. But you could see the years of training in the way he held his core muscles. In the way every single bone and muscle in his body was held with purpose. Loose and flowing, but still so very elegant. When he swiveled his torso, the motion rippled side to side all the way up through his neck like a snake.

As Sera spun, he moved in counterpoint, like his attempts to avoid her spinning arms was all part of the dance. Bobbing and flowing and just...

Everyone had their own ways of being free. Maybe this was his.

But it was over all too soon, because Sera was drunk and spinning and of course that would turn out to be a problematic combination.

You're fucking incredible, she told him, and he caught his breath and smiled. Not self-conscious (one would be hard-pressed to imagine that he was capable of it,) but not cocky either. Pleased, maybe.

"There's a trash can over there if you need it," he offered, reaching out to steady her with his hand. "Maybe next time less spinning, more dancing."

Serafíne

Sera has stopped moving by then. Right? She has stopped moving. Ian's steadying her and that is not difficult when she's flat-footed - bare-footed - on the soft grass. Up close she is slight enough that one could almost imagine her to be fragile. These sharp, spare bones, the straight line of her clavicles, the spare elegants of her scapulae like wings framing her spine. The odd hollows in her shoulder joints as she pulls her arms in close, not quite ready or perhaps not quite capable of making it to the trash can.

The back of her hand against her mouth as she fights down her gorge. As she struggles to fight down her gorge while simultaneously shaking him off or waving him off or something. No, she is waving him off. Here is his chance to make his escape.

There's a moment where you just believe that she's going to manage it. She seems so very determined, holding herself stiffly all through the shoulders, the muscles framing her spine taut, her arms a bit crossed, elbows bracing her flanks as her diaphragm starts to hitch.

Then she's on her knees, then she's on her hands-and-knees, no longer thinking anymore, nothing close to elegant, no thought of the trash can over there entering her mind, very little of her personal dignity left. Sera inhales sharp; and vomits. Inhales all sharp again; and pukes. Her body heaving with this absolute rejection of the remaining contents of her stomach.

Which are entirely liquid. Which may be the damned problem in the first place. Shaking, just shaking, as her body purges itself over and over again.

Ian

This is how these things went, sometimes. Sera was drunk. For a moment everything was glittering and beautiful, and then, just as suddenly - it wasn't.

Ian pulled away when Sera doubled over and sank to the ground. His brand of solidarity was not the sort that involved offering to pull back someone's hair while they puked. And he retreated far enough that the wind at his back would offer a slight buffer from the acrid and unmistakable scent that suddenly filled the air.

But he didn't leave. (Maybe that said something.) He didn't outright abandon her there after luring her into over-exerting herself while she was drunk. Instead he just turned his nose in the other direction and waited, and Sera would be spared the sight of his patient but quietly disgusted expression.

"Need me to get you some water?"

Pan

From out of nowhere:

"There you are."

He doesn't teleport although as certain unreliable witnesses can attest to he is capable of doing so. Has done so. Would do so again in a heartbeat if he thought the situation warranted it. But the two are somewhat distracted by the propulsion of alcohol and not-much-else out of the Cultist's stomach and into the grass.

Ian can tell just by a glance at him as he strides in out of the distance that the man is a priest. It's the dark clothes and the steel in his spine and the sense of detached peace about him. Can feel his resonance even without looking for it. Like holy light so bright it could burn if it doesn't just wash away the sin. His hands are in his pockets right up until he reaches the scene.

To Ian he says, "I'll take care of her."

It almost sounds like permission to leave but for the edge that suggests he sees the disgust on Ian's face.

Serafíne

Ian offers her water and it is only when he voices the offer that she registers his presence - that he has remained even while he holds himself, well, perhaps wisely apart and wisely downwind and wisely out of her immediate reach, right. Whatever she had tonight, she had enough to make her body reject it all and in the aftermath - stomach emptied - she is still drunk and now reeling and somehow lightened, purged.

Sera pushes herself a bit more upright, rocks back on her heels, and she cannot flush that away so she's flailing a bit blindly for a hand, hoping for someone to help her stand up or at least scoot away from the mess she's made. "And she's shaking now - from the purging -

"'s'a flask in my backpack," Sera is telling one or both of them, murmuring, and they would both be wise to ignore her because Jesus, Sera.

Shaking like the last leaf in autumn, but she still wants another goddamned drink.

Ian

Pan wasn't exactly the kind of person you didn't notice. And judging from the way Ian looked at him, silent and cold and significantly more sober than Sera was, the fact that Pan both looked and felt like a priest did not in any way exempt him from suspicion. It wasn't antagonistic so much as wary. They'd never met before, and Sera wasn't exactly in the best state to be making judgment calls.

But then, Pan probably felt the same way about him. And at least, from what little Ian could tell, the priest didn't seem to be hiding anything.

"You know him?" he directed the question to Sera, ignoring her request. And if she confirmed that Pan was indeed a friend (or at least someone she trusted,) then he'd leave it there. Grab his bag and his water from the place where he'd left them underneath a tree and walk back to his car.

And probably Sera would be better off for it.

Pan

So far as confirmation goes all Ian gets from the priest is the drawing of his hands from his pockets and the grasping of the backpack lain nearby. He doesn't take the flask from the pouch where he knows it to live but he does sling it over his shoulder with an ease born of familiarity. Like a father shouldering his daughter's backpack upon picking her up from the nurse's office at school.

It's up to Sera to verbalize some affirmative or another. Maybe she can't do anything other than wretch for a time. But Ian leaves and Pan stays. Even if she vomits for the rest of the hour the priest doesn't look as if he has anyplace else he wishes to be.

They'll learn each others' names and traditions later. So soon as he walks away he is gone from the priest's thoughts though. Sera is not of his flock but he tends to her anyway.

Fr. Echeverría

One of the teenage boys who belongs to the after school program at the Church of the Good Shepherd got into a fight with another boy from the city school district not in the parking lot of the Denver Museum of Natural Science but in the food court. They hadn't even purchased tickets to go in. The story goes that the boy who isn't a parishioner was sitting at a table with his girlfriend when the boy who is a parishioner walked up to him and pushed him out of his chair.

His mother is dead and his father works one full-time job and two part-time jobs to support him and his three sisters. His father called Father Echeverría after museum security called him. It was either he go down to the police station or someone come in and physically collect him. The other boy is eighteen years old and doesn't want to press charges.

The priest has several hours between the noon mass and the afternoon mass. If something happens he can just have Deacon Zavala do it.

At the time of the incident Father Echeverría is walking out of the museum with a sullen-looking sixteen-year-old boy at his side. The priest is dressed all in black and has his hands in the pockets of his slacks. The boy wasn't wearing a jacket when he showed up. He has the priest's barn coat on now.

Riley

Why in the world would Riley be at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science? Probably for the science part, but there's not a lot there that appeals to her personal interest in science. Nature, history, these aren't really her "bag" see. There's a health science section on the third floor that comes kind of close, and a space science area on the main floor that comes a little closer.

Maybe it's just curiosity that has her wandering inside to the line to pay $15 for a ticket to wander around some more. Maybe she picked up on some unknown resonance and decided to discretly check it out.

It's none of those things, really. The building is a new place she's never been into before and she wants to explore.

She's through the line now, standing on the second floor landing between the escalators, not looking at the people (not really) but looking at the massive skeleton of a whale suspended over the first floor.

And seeing people through the gaps in its bones. Just another person in the crowd, a tall woman with long brown hair, a too big nose, dressed in a light jacket, t-shirt, jeans, and black-and-white Converse high-tops. Exploring.

[awareness!]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (2, 5, 7, 8, 9, 9) ( success x 4 )

Grace

Grace is at the museum today because it's been too long since she's been. No real reason per se.

Obviously, when there is no reason for anything, the universe still has its own reasons, its own way. Mages appear when they need to.

She's on her way in when Pan is on his way out, with what's obviously a bratty kid in tow. One of the shepherd's flock gone astray and pissed off about that. Been there, oh yes.

The Adept is dressed in jeans and that grey turtleneck jacket, innocuous and hard to remember to the Sleepers around them. She waves to the priest, but his charge will likely not even notice.

Serafíne

Here is the flash of something absolutely surreal: just outside the glass doors where the patrons and hurrying out and hurrying in - a Cultist of Ecstasy. She is smoking a cigarette. The cigarettes has dark blue paper and a gold foil band around the filter. Her long hair is pulled back from her face and twisted into a thick and rather messy brad. She has a thick spike through the cartilage of her right ear and a bar that pierces her left ear in an artful three-places and she's dress for the cold in, you know, summertime clothes. Denim cut-offs and herringbone-patterned thigh-high fishnets held up by black lace garters and a loose white t-shirt over black lingerie and cropped leather jacket because why the hell not.

Sera is talking to A Guy and A Girl, cupping her tattooed left hand over her cigarette as she takes a pull. Laughing about something.

She just woke up.

It is breakfast time.

God only knows why she's here.

No wait, maybe God does know.

They've all found themselves here at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science on this chilly Sunday afternoon for their own reasons. Pan is here dealing with, shall we say, congregational concerns. Riley and Grace have both showed up out of a sheer Hey, this seems like a place to go today mood, to explore and see new things (or revisit things they've seen before). Sera is drawn here for reasons only God (or whatever power is Out There) is aware of; the point is that she's here. They're all here on this day, barricaded against the cold outside or just venturing out into it.

The DNMS is host to many exhibits, and they bring no small number of people to gander and ooh and aaah about the anthropological and geological wonders that surround them. Today it is a little less occupied than it might otherwise be; maybe the cold has kept them away, or perhaps it was just a sense that today was a day to be Somewhere Else. Either way, there are still people here wandering through the various floors and looking at the different exhibits but not as many as you might think. There are the Sleepers that Sera is speaking with outside, the boy that Pan is leading out, the employees who wish they were home nestled in with a blanket and some smattering of other people. But it is only the Mages who feel it.

Riley feels it first, but Pan and Sera (and Grace, too) aren't far behind. It's muffled, but it's there, sparking up in the upper floors of the building and arcing its way down. The more experienced trio get a sense of a hole being ripped in the fabric of mortality and a shining warmth pulling itself through; it glows against their mind, invigorates them. It's like birth, but ancient. Grace, for her part, just gets more of a general ping that swells in the back of her mind.

It's coming from the third floor.

Riley

Riley feels a jumble of things all at once. The first is a tension, because there by the door she senses a collection of resonances, one of which is at least a little familiar to her now. Mages, here? Of course here. Here in Denver there is Grace and Man-Candy and Lena and Adam, so it stands to reason that there are others.

And then she feels that something else, something Other that feels like it's raining down on her head. Invigorating, well that's nice, but what is it?

She pulls out her phone and, well. She turns to look back over the railing, across the main lobby to the front entrance where she senses that cluster of people and yep, sure enough, Shit is that Grace? Well, so much for a planned meeting under more controlled conditions.

And so much for keeping herself hidden until she susses out the Awakened situation. Because when Riley pulls out her phone she thumbs the screen on and she pulls up a custom-made application. Something that will let her see the Code, and what sorts of bugs and glitches it has in it today.

As she Works even this most minor of Workings, the air around her begins to shift, so slightly as it leaks through the barrier she's erected. Just the faintest thread of something inexorably mercurial.

[nix that, I forgot who I was playing, Riley ain't got no Prime augh!]

Grace

Ohh, Grace-senses tingling. She takes a quick breath, and looks around, to Pan, to Sera (who she's just noticed loitering at the entrance, and what the Hell?)

It's happening again, isn't it?

Freakish metaphysical weirdness, and a group of mages all 'happening' to be at the right place. Gee universe, would be nice if you could put a little notice on her calendar once in a while -- 'Weird Shit Today, 2-5 PM.'

She doesn't feel the invigoration, the birth of something shining and warm -- she just knows it's something strange. And she hopes it's not demons crawling their way through the IMAX screen in this place. Shit.

In any case, she makes her way inside, because even if it is demons crawling their way through the IMAX screen, it's not like she can ignore that.

Riley

Fr. Echeverría

He doesn't have a hand on the boy's elbow or shoulder because he's trusting him to walk out of here on his own. Because the priest can remember being sixteen years old and angry at the entire world and willing to fight anyone who had slighted him even if that person were his friend. His anger made him susceptible to the slightest kindness. Drew him to people who understood him and he thought he could understand. That's how his son happened. Ignorance coupled with loneliness. His son grew up without a father because of his anger.

So he understands this kid. Has sympathy for him even though the kid doesn't grasp that his own father is trying very hard to provide for them. No way for him to understand this without growing up or having kids of his own but Pan would like very much for this kid not to have kids.

As he walks of his own volition he has no need to lay a hand on him.

But then something opens up upstairs. Pan sees in quick order Grace and Sera but his alarm and the sharpening of his senses supersedes his desire to great them proper.

"Manny," he says to the boy. Puts a hand on his shoulder now. No one else notices anything is wrong but they may yet. "I left my phone in the security office. Go sit in the truck."

"But--"

"Go."

"Oh my fuck," Sera mutters not precisely beneath her breath but around it. It has been a strange handful of weeks and Sera - who has a surreality all her own - is just there, sharing a cigarette with a guy who moonlights as a bartender at The Abbey and pays the bills with a job at DMNS, where he hides his many tattooes beneath a button-down, long-sleeve white shirt, which does not really hide them. And he is Talking About something and Sera is not really sure what he is Talking About or what he has been Talking About for the last... well, for the last god-knows-how long (two or three puffs of the cigarette) because she's feeling something; feeling it open up in her; feeling it swell and crack and bloom. Feeling that warmth, that -

- Sera tips her head back; there's brick or glass or something behind her. Sera tips her head back thinks about kissing That Guy because he's still talking while she's just being.

And then she does kiss him. Straightens up and reaches for both of his lapels and pulls him in and breathes out her smokey, spiced breath onto his beared cheek, her eyes closed, her senses open, burning, burnished, bright.

[Mind/Life/Prime 1]

Her cheek is smooth; his bearded. His breath is warm and a bit humid and a bit sour; she can feel the radiant heat from his skin and he opens his empty hand and reaches out instinctively to steady her, grazes her hip. She's never come on to him before, not more than she comes on to most people, and there's a startling intimacy about the moment that catches him on the cusp of awareness, has him taking in the view of the lawn on this cold spring day with a new - not appreciation, no. Perhaps merely: perspective.

Then Sera sort of nuzzles him and lets him go and snuffs her cigarette beneath a booted foot and goes inside.

As she aligns herself with the creative forces of the universe, Serafine senses a rush of a mental Pattern back into creation. It follows directly with the rise of Life energy, particularly warm and vibrant, flush with the building blocks of the universe. It isn't magic with a capital M and a k; it's something nearly as old as the foundations of reality though. Certainly more ancient than anything she's likely felt before. She gets a bead on it, up on the third floor in one of the middle area of that floor.

requiem aeternam interrupta

Manny would normally, perhaps, argue with the good Father about having to go sit and wait in the truck while the priest went to go get his phone. He would say that he can just go home on his own perhaps, or deliver some sort of snark (built on the back of being an angry teenager with hormones marinating his brain) about how someone can lose their phone so quickly. But the priest's command takes hold and the Sleeper sighs, heading off to do just that.

Meanwhile, Serafine's Guy is caught unaware by the sudden intimacy, and is caught just as unaware when she steps back and heads inside. That was certainly unexpected, and he's not sure what to do from there. He thinks about it for a moment and then lets her go. He needs time to process that little bit.

Riley lets a little bit of her sparkling aura, that inexorable but mercurial nature slip out ever so very slightly and she gets a fix on something, while Grace heads inside. They're all inside now, and...

Nothing is crashing through the museum. This is no Ben Stiller movie and no Tyrannasaurus Rex skeleton is playing havoc (or even chess). Its up above them though, so who knows what terror may be awaiting them (or what Sleepers may in trouble) that far up.

Fr. Echeverría

He stands still long enough to feel a sense of assurance that Manny is going to sit in the truck until whatever is going on upstairs is done going on and in that amount of time Sera has decided to come inside.

"Hey," he says to her in the distracted tone of one who's listening very hard to something going on a distance away. As soon as she's within arm's reach of the priest Pan takes hold of her hand and matches her pace. They're going upstairs.

Doesn't ask her if she felt that. If Sera didn't feel that she can ask him. He knows she uses physical contact to help her with her pagan rituals. If she wants to do anything on the way up, well. You're welcome.

Pan though has to reach into his pocket to find his rosary.

Grace

Grace can feel the brightness of Pan's righteousness as he tells the boy to leave. But she can't help but look at Sera when that kiss happens -- can't help but stare, even though staring at kissing people is totally not her way. Sera's entrancing, draws all eyes and all attention to her.

There is something else, something familiar on the back of her brain, something... but she doesn't know Riley well enough to place it, and certainly doesn't know what Riley looks like.

Between the two Disciples, she makes a choice of who to go to first -- Sera, of course. Sorry Pan, but Sera's the one Grace makes a beeline toward upon entering the museum. Pan joins them soon enough, though, and it's not like Grace minds.

"Hey, guys," she says, when she gets close enough. Follows them, because hey if they don't know what to do...

Serafíne

"Did you feel that?" Pan is the first magus Sera encounters inside the museum, after he has divested himself of his teenaged charge. The kid is disappearing out doors still swinging from her entrance and Sera herself is going to slip an arm through Pan's and slide up beside him. Except, he's reaching for her hand, wrapping her hand is his, which pulls her back from whatever is Above to the here and now, for just a moment. A glimpse at his profile and they're already in motion, Sera walking closer to Pan than is strictly necessary or perhaps even proper.

Her pagan rituals, you know.

And then Grace, "Hi Grace," Sera says and sort of reaches for her like to pull her into the World's Strangest Threesome (not like that, darlings. Minds sharp and clean please.)

Someone somewhere wants them to Pay and Sera swipes an AmEx and lo they are through.

"It's just - being born. Being reborn, you know? Recreating itself, so fucking warm. Older than anything I know, too.

"Than anything I can imagine."

Sera tells them, the both of them, as they climb.

Riley

There is a community in Denver that Riley is currently not a member of. Her invitation got lost in the mail, maybe, which means boo no decoder ring. But genuine boo because three Mages are gathering together to probably help each other out, discuss, suss, plan, et cetera, and Riley?

Riley's the loner on the second floor stepping onto the escalator to go up a little further, to get let ooff on the floor where Egypt's on display next to the dinosaurs and oh, well, hm. Maybe this isn't a Ben Stiller movie but they are Awakened so anything is possible.

She pulls up a program on her phone and looks for other Minds. Not Sleeper Minds, not even Awakened Minds, but if they're possibly dealing with Other Sentience Riley would kind of like to know ahead of time, y'know?

[Mind Scan, same as before]

Dice: 2 d10 TN3 (2, 10) ( success x 1 )

Grace

Sera says it's being reborn, recreating itself, and it's warm. Older than anything. Grace puts two and two together and it comes up dinosaur.

"They have an allosaurus skeleton up here on the third floor. I don't know if it would be such a great thing if one decided to recreate itself," Grace says, and then stops herself. These two may not know what she's talking about "Allosauruses are the meat-eating kind. Big enough to bite a person in half."

Could be worse. There are dinosaurs capable of swallowing a person whole. That's not what we're talking about here, just scythe-claws and dagger-teeth, in a body about 1.5 times human height.

Sera reaches for her, tries to draw Grace into the group hug they've got going, but where she usually gives Sera great leeway in the whole touchy-feely thing, she's pretty damned reluctant to be drawn into a tight huddle with Pan too. She'll hold somebody's hand, sure...

Fr. Echeverría

If anyone had sent out invitations to join the Denver Awakened population Father Echeverría would have thrown it in the shredder with everything else he wants nothing to do with. Communities cause nothing but headaches. He didn't receive an invitation though. He found a Dreamspeaker girl who thought she could sleep under bridges and on park benches with all of her earthly possessions strapped to a bicycle and call it a day. It wasn't long before heathens were falling asleep drunk in pews in his sanctuary and calling him to ask for help with Nephandi and demons and dead Archmagus's bones.

Enjoy it while you can, Riley. Enjoy it while you can.

The three of them are held up brief at the customer service counter because apparently you have to pay for the privilege of entering a museum. The girl at the register already knows why the priest is there and he has the neon-colored paper bracelet around his wrist so Sera only has to pay for herself and Grace. It really is like the most demented date ever.

Up they go.

"I did feel that," he says in response to Sera's observation.

And then he picks up the pace. Drags the girls with him. Doesn't say anything to the notion of an allosaurus coming to life because it's hard to climb stairs and talk at the same time. By the time they get to the third floor he's breathing heavy but it isn't anything to worry about. He's just forty-six years old and doesn't exercise.

Riley

At the top of the escalator, Riley stops, steps automatically to the side as she looks down at her screen. It shows a map of the floor she's on, with little blips for certain people (why yes, she did learn a thing or two from Mssrs Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, and Prongs, and then digitized that idea), and the one that is the most interesting is one that is quite large and in the block to the left of her. Riley looks up, looks to the left, glances back over her shoulder again to see the strange trio...taking the stairs? She frowns, her mouth quirking to the side.

Alright, girl, you're in Denver now, time to play nice. She only enjoys her solitary anonymity for a few moments longer.

Riley steps back, leaning back into the shiny metal rail between the up and down escalators, and she waits. Looking at her phone still, switching over to another application.

And as she does she lets the shield around her mind - around her resonance to be exact - disintegrate. Revealing her to the others to be exactly what she is, which isn't so different from what they are. Maybe Grace recognizes her now, or recognizes the feel of her seeping through a wireless connection as they worked together to crack a code or five.

"There's something over there," she says, once they're within range, not looking up from her screen. "Something old old old-" and there she breaks off because she finally does look up, and over to a man in his mid-forties who looks like he could be older, huffing and catching his breath. Pushing up from the railing, Riley says, "Hey, is he okay?"

Meanwhile, that process is running in the background.

[but before that she scried from a short distance, and took a little bit of time to do it, so Corr 2, diff -1 (time) -1 (practiced), dropping a WP, don't know how many suxx she needs so she'll be running this until she hits it I guess?]

She's still holding hands with Pan, but Grace escapes her reach. Slips away from Sera's reach and holds herself apart and that's fine. They hoof it up the stairs, Pan going faster than he should. Sera's humming a bit beneath her breath, leaning into Pan and peering down the hallway in the direction of the Thing Coming Into Being.

By the time Riley rocks up, Sera is distracted by something else, the far-away look of someone... elsewhere. Riley's presence does not register, not fully, not yet.

Sera has tipped her forehead into Pan's shoulder as he catches her breath and is feeling for the loose, abortive swirl of the Things superficial thoughts, the drift of them, the moving current -

Sera reaches out with her Mind, and feels the at the Mental pattern inside in order to see if she can pick up its surface thoughts. And, perhaps to her surprise (or perhaps not), she realizes that it's aware of her there, and then she feels the power of something ancient rise up to push her out before she can get anything. She managed to pick up the feel of a feather and a heart, but little else. She also realizes, in confirmation of the age, that it's a vast intelligence. While she can't crack into those thoughts, she knows that this thing's experience runs well beyond centuries. Maybe millenia.

Grace

"Wait..." Grace stops, tilts her head, looks over Riley (looks how she peers into her cell phone, how she feels so suddenly like a silvery rush). "Riley?"

She fishes into her laptop bag for her cell phone, and quickly rattles off a text to a certain number, just to be sure.

It's you?

The answering noise from Riley's cell phone is enough to answer that question.

"It's okay guys, I know her. She's one of us."

So now they've got two Virtual Adepts staring into their phones while a potential resurrected, reborn something awaits on the third floor of a nature museum. Sounds about right.

Serafíne

"Fuck." Sera curses quietly beneath her breath; perhaps just audible enough for Pan to hear her, close as they are. "I was trying to see how well disposed it was to us. Right? Like maybe it was just hungry or whatever and the order of the day was to fucking run.

"Whatever is in there is brilliant; like, just - this sense of vast awareness, and it knows we're here. It knows I was looking; it pushed me away before I could sense anything more than a feather and a heart. "

Riley

Riley is looking at Pan when Grace steps around him and spies her. The Initiate offers the Apprentice a flash of a grin and a, "Heya, sweetheart," and then one of them is digging around for a phone while the other is glancing down to there's again. The process needs another minute to go through, the image on her screen - she has a smartphone with a nice wide, flat surface, a surface that is currently black with green digits (letters, numbers, symbols) blinking in and out of sight, slowly slowly slowly creating what looks like an ASCII image. It's almost there, almost shows the glass cases with their ancient unearthed mummies on display, and maybe whatever presence is inside there.

"I'm looking inside now," a glance up and around, the museum is quiet but hardly empty. She steps closer so that she's folded into the group now, part of them and yet a little apart. There is a stud - tiny and silvery, winking when it catches the light - in her left nostril. Her hair is down but pushed back enough to expose her left ear, which bears silver studs lining the organ from lobe all around the cartilage.

"Just...about...got it..."

The four of them converge, and Riley makes a little bit of introduction by way of pointing out that she knows some of what they know. Also, checking to see if Pan is okay. But she's keeping an eye out to try and see remotely into the other room, while Sera is trying to tickle at the surface thoughts of whatever's inside. That provokes its own reaction.

But we'll get there. First, introductions. Riley gets pointed out by Grace, who gets a feel for the other Virtual Adept's aura and then confirms it with a quick text. Mages, meet Mages. And Sera gives them a quick heads up to the fact that whatever it is was able to push out her attempts to take a look at what was floating on the surface of its mind. They're working together for the moment, and Riley manages to get her screen to pop up a look at the inside of the Egyptian exhibit. It's like having a spy camera in the room, only the spy camera is positioned in the best possible vantage point in order to see the entire room. What Riley sees on that smartphone screen gives her a moment's warning before the rest are about to see it.

There are several exhibits in this Egyptology room. The source of the overall room (which is not far from the stairs the trio of mages came up from) comes from two women, found wrapped in linen in painted coffins over 3,000 years ago. With them came several of these people, as scientists worked with the doctors at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center to examine them via X-Rays, CT scans and the like. These two coffins have been within the room; one open, one closed. The one that has been left closed did so because it frankly wasn't quite as impressive of a specimen for display. Fascinating from a medical and anthropological standpoint, sure. But its sister sarcophogus had a more visually dynamic creature.

What Riley sees is that both coffins are open. One of them is empty, and someone is making their way out of the room.

The Virtual Adept doesn't have a lot of time to warn them, maybe just enough to get a word out before the person comes into view. She (because it is a she) isn't wrapped up in bandages and sporting the kind of ancient weathering that Jack Pierce so famously emulated on Boris Karloff in 1932. It isn't even like the CGI decay on Arnold Vosloo as he battled Rachel Weisz and Brenden Fraser. The woman's skin, in fact, is clear and smooth, without injury or weathering. It's darkened, the color that one would imagine the people of Egypt to be, and she is short, around five and a half feet. They can certainly see that there is nothing approaching any level of injury on her, because...well, she is frankly not dressed. Any bandages or the like were probably removed from her or dissolved years ago from study and weather. She doesn't seem to be ashamed of it though (and thank the gods that no one is around to see them talking to the nude Middle Eastern woman because wouldn't THAT be awkward); she is more intrigued by the four of them.

And when she opens her mouth to speak...well, oddly enough she speaks in clear, albeit accented, English.

"You're wizards. Are you waiting for me?" She seems unsure what to make of it if they are.q

Riley

Riley does try to warn them, that what she sees is a room with a missing body that's supposed to be on display - weird, so weird putting the dead on display. Well, the room isn't missing a body, it's-

"Someone's-"

And then there she is, the strange Middle Eastern woman completely naked and in public.

Riley's brows lift and her dark eyes widen. "What the fuck," she says, voice quiet with surprise.

Squeezing her eyes shut, she shakes her head. "Do you think," but no, don't even finish that question, Riley. You're a smart woman. That was a feeling of something being reborn and revitalized. The mind is vast and ancient. And a naked woman appears from a room where a sarcophogus had been recovered and is currently empty.

Do they think she came out of that sarcophogus? Yes.

"She's supposed to be in there," she says, voice low, filling the others in quickly. "Preeeeeetty sure she's one of the mummies retrieved and brought here for study and display."

This woman says that they are wizards and asks if they were waiting for her. Well, what did Winston Zeddemore teach her all those years ago?

"Maybe?" It's not an enthusiastic YES but then the woman didn't ask if they were gods, did she?

Grace

"Okay, well, at least you're not an allosaurus," Grace says, having poked her head up from her cell phone in time to see the arrival of a naked woman. Riley fills them in, and to Grace's credit, it doesn't much phase her. A mummy. Okay. Shrug.

"We were, sort of, waiting for you. But we didn't know what you'd be," she adds. "Hi."

Yeah. Hi, to the nude Middle Eastern woman who just walked up at the museum. Grace honestly doesn't care about that part. Just relieved she's not covered in scales and with five pointy ends.

"Who are you?"

Serafíne

Sera does not continue hanging on to Pan. Honestly she is now half-expecting an intelligent, malevolent, magickal man-eating dragon or whatever sort of skeleton it is they normally keep on display in these parts (this sort of museum is not one of Sera's regular haunts under any circumstances, whatsoever, so the difference between dinosaurs and dragons is will night indistinguishable to her and anyway she probably believes more in dragons than in dinosaurs), something humid and sloughing with compound eyes whirring with a vasty and primordial intelligence she can hardly comprehend and beneath that, beneath that, beneath that an awareness that feels equal parts bright and dark, inhuman and alien and hungry.

Wouldn't you be hungry if you had just dragged yourself back into existance?

Sera fucking would be.

Of course, Sera always Wants, remember how she Wanted after a thirty-day fast from sex and drugs and even the simple pleasures of ice cream and toast, imagine how much she would Want after 3000 years as a corpse, or whatever, dragged around the world chained in the box in which she had been bound.

And Sera, Sera Sera Sera, Sera steps out from Pan's side advances on the woman -

"Jesus Christ, did you just will yourself into existance? Just drag yourself back here again?"

- toward her really, already taking off her own leather jacket to hand over to the stranger.

"I mean, I didn't know I was waiting for you. I just went for brunch and a Bloody Mary or seventeen and saw Eric while I was walking and he was headed to work and we started chatting about this show that his ex was putting on at Gallery Twenty-Seven and before I knew it we were here and I was having a cigarette and

"bam. Fuck. So no, technically no, it's a goddamned coincidence but Jesus fuck.

"I'm Sera. We should probably get you outta here. You can put on my coat.

"Hawksley's gonna be so fucking jealous."

Fr. Echeverría

Pan would have ignored Riley's comment about whether he was alright anyway. They have bigger things to worry about than some middle-aged guy getting winded walking up two flights of stairs. It's just that none of them know what it is until moments before it steps out to great them.

Only Riley sees what's inside the room and before she can tell them what it is -

The priest slackens his hand just before the punker decides she wants her freedom back. Doesn't come forward and take control of the situation. That's not how he tends to operate. So long as it seems as though the younger women aren't making anything worse he's fine with just standing back by where Riley is and observing.

Oh Sera. Just what a visitor from three thousand years ago needs to hear soon as she wakes up. Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fucking fuck fuck fuck.

requiem aeternam interrupta

They all have their reactions to this woman standing in front of them, and they're understandable. Riley and Pan, they're taking in the situation in a measured way. The Virtual Adept says Maybe and the priest lets the others do the talking. Meanwhile, Grace and Sera are more direct, more forthcoming. And this all makes perfect sense. Riley is someone who has hid her Resonance to date, so of course she would be more likely not to reveal information right away, to wait and see. And wait and see is the good Father's jam.

Sera, though, she's ecstatic and she offers a lot of words in response. The woman smiles oddly, not quite sure exactly what the Ecstatic is saying--she understands the words, but not the context--but she also seems okay with being confused. It's almost as if she's used to it. She takes the offered coat, looks it over and then slips it on. She still isn't exactly covered, of course. There's a whole--well, let's say she's a walking below-the-waist indecency charge waiting to happen. But it's something, at least, and she rolls her shoulders, looks at the jacket to see how it fits.

"Thank you," she says to Serafine, gratefully, before she looks at Grace. "I am Halima Rahal. This..." She frowns a moment, like she isn't sure quite how to explain it. "You are not Children of Osiris then. But something like them, perhaps? Ahl-i-Batin? Taftani?"

Her knowledge of Western Traditions seems to be off the mark. And finally, she asks,

"Where am I? This does not feel like anywhere I have been."

Serafíne

"I'm Sera, you're in Denver, and I figure we should get outta here."

Sera is blissful, though she's not wholly certain whether all of this is happening at the moment, or whether she is hallucinating. Either way, she embraces the moment. With that last bit Sera's turning to the others in a sort of inquiry and reaching to peel her t-shirt up and off. Beneath it she is still slightly-more-decent than Halima Rahal is now: she's now wearing her usual costume of cut-off denims and a bra.

"Here," handing off the tee to the - you know - newly Awoken whatever-she-is - and making a gesture with her hands. "Wrap this around your waist. It'll at least cover your ass. Hey, did any of you guys drive?"

A glance at Riley with her phone. "Is there a back door we can get out?" Back to Halima Rahal, then. This quick slicing smile. "We should probably get outta here. Some asshole's bound to wonder why you're up and out of your coffin."

Grace

"No, we are not any of those. The Ahl-i-Batin are gone," Grace tells her, and where Grace picked that little bit up? She's not telling. The Ahl-i-Batin have been gone for a long time, which means...

"This may be a shock, but the better question might be 'when am I?' You're in a museum. A place for antiquities."

Which means... you were an antiquity, oh naked woman.

With that, Grace turns to her phone again. and why? Well, to pull up Google Maps, and ask plaintively for it to give her a map of this place. Is there a back door that they could run to?

Riley

The eldest among them are hanging back, one waiting to see how this shakes out, the other shutting down a program and opening up a simple browser. Riley is looking up the name, Halima Rahal, one ear pricking at Children of Osiris (Oh really?), Ahl-i-Batin (Jesus that's old), Taftâni - Riley lets out a surprised laugh. If any of them is an agent of chaos and potentially vulgar magic, well, maybe it'd be her.

Then she glances up, glances down no wait looks up because the woman with the half-shaved head and the thick messy braid of blonde hair is undressing. "Uh, you know there's a gift shop downstairs, right? I'm pretty sure they'll have shorts or a towel or something." Because the last thing they need is not one, but two people wandering around getting them noticed by the cops.

But Sera is free to do whatever because Riley's screen is white with search engine screens and ohhhhhhh.

Those expressive brows lift upward again, and then crash down in a frown.

"Hey," she says, sidling closer to Mr. Tall Dark and Too Fond of Johnny Cash. Her voice is low and she's holding her phone over so he can take a look at what she's found. Apparently Halima Rahal hasn't been dead a thousand years. She's only been missing for about sixty. She's leaning in to Pan, moving so that her left side is facing him if she has to, because he's the closest, Sera's over there, and Grace she knows is still pretty low level. Keeping her voice down to just the pair of them, Riley asks, "You wouldn't happen to know how to look for curses or bad Effects, would you?"

Oh, someone's asking if she knows a way out. Grace is on it, but Riley looks over her shoulder and says, "A back door's going to have an alarm, but I'll see what I can do." But before that, she looks back at Pan.

Fr. Echeverría

Pan does reach out and tilt the phone away from Riley so that he can read what's on it. That appears to change his opinion as to whether the women can handle sorting out what to do with her. Maybe they can look back and answer the question that Riley is asking him. But Grace is on her phone and Sera is trying to cover the nude woman's ass.

He's wearing black slacks and a button-down short-sleeved shirt tucked in and belted. If he were inside the church right now he'd have a collar on. An alcohol-abusing no-account gringo punk who didn't have a career during the time when most of these women were young enough to begin developing an interest in music isn't what he aspires to when he gets dressed in the morning.

Concern over crowding and overwhelming the woman gone now he hands the phone back to Riley and says "Thank you" in a voice she's hearing for the first time. It's husky and accented and that's all he says to her before he walks over to the Egyptian woman.

"Sera," he says as he crosses the floor, pulls out his keys, "the truck's parked outside. Pull it around back. There's a bag in the backseat, it's got a change of clothes in it, she can change when we're downstairs."

Just ignore Manuel.

As for their guest:

"Miss Rahal, hi, I'm sorry. What everyone's saying is you're a long way from home and we're gonna try and help you." He doesn't put his hand on her shoulder but he looks as if he would if she were clothed. His eyes don't drop below her chin. He's had lots of practice dealing with naked women recently. "What's the last thing you remember?"

Halima nods when Sera introduces her, says that she's in Denver. She actually seems to know the name of the city, for what that's worth; she smiles appreciatively when the T-Shirt is offered and takes it to cover her lower extremities. "Thank you. I don't wish to draw any undue attention to myself." The sentence comes with a wry smile when Sera suggests that someone might wonder why she's up and walking around. "I would imagine that would raise a lot of questions. I am sure that it already will."

She nods to Grace, not surprised that she's in a museum. The idea that the Batini are gone does strike her, though. The delicate (newly-regrown) eyebrows knit together, and for a moment she seems hesitant, unsure how to take that. But there isn't a lot of time to focus on that because in the meantime Riley has shown Pan some relevant information and she's planning to hack their way out the back door and Pan is stepping forward to elucidate her. She listens to him as she finishes covering up all the parts of her that would cause her to be thrown in jail.

"Yes, I gathered as much," she answers to him. "As to what I remember..." She pauses, as if she isn't sure how to answer that. "In this world? It was 1953. I was in Cairo. That is...a difficult question to answer, I am afraid. My memories are not entirely linear. I have been wandering the realm of Duat--the underworld--for however long it has been."

Grace

The familiar Google Maps interface goes up on her phone, but apparently Grace is able to zoom far further than most. Her fingers zoom in and in and in and in, and suddenly instead of streets and maybe the shadow of the outline of the museum on her screen, there's walls and exits marked, as well as a scrollable 3D interface for the floors. Soon enough, she finds what she's looking for.

"Second floor. There's an exit toward the back of the second floor," Grace says, showing Riley while she's at it. They'll need to know where to go.

Then, Riley goes on about shorts or a towel, and Grace shrugs and unzips her turtleneck. She's got a t-shirt underneath, so she's not going to scandalize anyone, going around without clothes.

And that T-shirt? It is a darker gray than her jacket, and has a design on the front like this: http://img1.etsystatic.com/029/0/6153077/il_570xN.565328593_23or.jpg

"As long as we're stripping to take care of Halima, one of you can take my jacket so we don't get arrested. I want it back though. I don't know that we have time to go down to the gift shop."

Ever practical, Grace.

Serafíne

Sera accepts the keys easily, flashing Halima a quick half-smile, turning to accept the keys from the priest's hands. Rising to the tip-toes of her Doc's to brush a kiss across the edge of his cheek with a tender, rather intimate murmur of assent as she does so. Slides the ring around her index finger and breathes in the sense of all that light, then exhales with a sigh.

"I'll bring the truck around."

PAN IS LETTING HER DRIVE SOMEWHERE. PAN IS LETTING HER DRIVE SOMEWHERE.

Probably because it is midday and she doesn't seem especially altered but still,

PAN IS LETTING HER DRIVE SOMEWHERE,

which stops her, not precisely then, when Grace is offering Sera a jacket so that she will not get arrested for wandering around the museum in a bra (hint: Sera always wanders around in a bra, and never gets arrested) and Sera takes the jacket.

It is a boring jacket.

Sera therefore leaves it unzipped.

Anyway, Sera takes the jacket and the keys and gives Halima et al a Ta and turns back to the stairs and starts down them and only remembers the last time she got to drive Pan's truck when she's half-way down the stairs, and that knowledge, that memory is sharp in the back of her throat by the time she gets to the first floor and starts out toward the parking lot, intending to bring the truck around.

She doesn't know about the kid won't know until she gets there but what the hell. Sera's a charming creature. She speaks Spanish. She'll find a way.

Riley

Grace is looking for a backdoor, Sera and Pan are talking to Halima, and Riley? Well first she is impatiently waving away Grace's phone. "We should scatter. Someone take Halima out the back, anyone not necessary to that can go out the front. I'll take down the security for a few minutes, long enough for you all to get out. I'll contact you after." She flashes Grace a quick grin that is maybe meant to be sort of reassuring? It's a brilliant sort of smile that Riley's got, a charm that pulls people to her, drawing them in like a magnet. It is part reassuring but mostly it's excited. This thing she's about to do? Break into the security system and take it down for even a little bit? This is the sort of thing that she lives to do.

Then the lanky woman is heading to the side, shifting her laptop bag so that when she finds a bench and settles into it the bag is resting in her lap. Then out comes her laptop, simple on the outside but oh so shiny on its inside. A custom build, because that's how Riley rolls. Nondescript outside, amazingness within.

She unfolds the device and wakes it up, and gets to work.

Grace

Okay, fine Riley, don't figure out which door you need to take down, just wave Grace away like a gnat. Suppose she'll just take them all down, and... whatever. The disappointment doesn't exactly show on her face, but yeah -- it's not like the one thing that Grace can do in this situation just got waved away by someone she was trying to be cool for or anything.

And then, Grace gets grinned at, because Riley is about to do something legitimately cool, and yeah, that doesn't help.

Her tradition-mate makes some sense with the scattering idea, so she goes to Pan and shows him the map instead. Surely his techno-ignorance doesn't extend itself to computerized maps, right? Everyone knows how to read a map.

"So yeah, just go out this way... I'm going to go try to help Sera find the truck," she says, and ambles on downstairs. Really, the strongest among them should go with Halima in case there's trouble, she reasons.

Fr. Echeverría

The priest has an awful lot of questions.

Knowing that she disappeared in 1953 and hearing her say that that is the last thing she remembers. That she's been wandering the underworld. Witnessing her calm as she emerges nude from a sarcophagus. Hearing the names of long-dead traditions. This is something they're going to have to discuss at greater length later.

Not right now. Not in a museum during business hours when he's got a teenager in the truck and security could respond to the downed door locks any moment.

Pan doesn't know how any of that works. He can sense Riley Working behind him but he doesn't attend to it. He turns away from Rahal to glance at the phone screen Grace tilts towards him. He doesn't quite know what he's looking at but he frowns the way he frowns when he's reading anyway.

"Okay," he says. "We'll be right down."

That settles that. The door Grace pointed out is very close. He puts a hand on her elbow without glancing down. No point risking seeing something he doesn't need to see.

"Vamos. Come on."

requiem aeternam interrupta

Sera may wander around in just a bra and not get arrested, but she's certainly not getting particularly pleased looks from security people that she passes when she makes her way down to the first floor. They can't call the police because she's not actively indecent but it's very, very likely that she would be asked to leave and not come back (they have children here, the manager would say) if she wasn't already on her way out the door, heading off to the car in order to deal with poor sixteen year-old Manny who has no idea what this barely-dressed white chick climbing into Pan's car is doing. But she has the keys, and it probably won't be difficult for her to convince the kid that it's all fine, she's a friend of Pan's or however she approaches it. The car heads around toward the back.

Grace points out the door, and it's a piece of cake for Riley to hack her way through the alarm system, aided by a bit of magic. The social dynamics between the group is noticed by Halima, but she doesn't say anything because she knows she has a lot to learn still about all of them before she can make a complete picture.

And then, Pan's hand is at her elbow and with a slight nod of her head, she's letting him guide her along. This is their dance right now, and she's willing to let them lead. The path to the back door is untroubled; they pass by a couple security guys walking along, but outside of Halima getting the same kinds of looks Sera received, no one questions them.

The back door opens with ease, and they're heading out into the chill air. Halima squints at the bright light, is surprised by the cold. She knew of Denver. She didn't know it.

Our setting today: the Santa Fe Arts District. The time: just around dusk. The sun is setting in the sky, painting the canopy of the world in vibrant colors. Tonight, those vibrant colors seem strikingly red for some reason. Who knows why the colors end up exactly the way they are on any particular reason. Well, in truth scientist know, and they would be able to talk at length about how the reflections of this and that and the earth's atmosphere and the landscape and whatever. But they'd be missing an important factor: sometimes, something spiritual is in the air. And that can flavor even something as vast as the sky. Whether that's the case tonight or not remains to be seen.

We open our scene not on the main thoroughfare, but off on a side street somewhere. This is not far from the restaraunts and bistros and art galleries and the rest that dot the main strip of the area. The shadows are just a little bit longer here, but it's not desolate and full of murders or muggers or mugging murderers...at least, any more than the rest of the city. There are a couple shops, more out of the way mom and pop sorts of things than glossed-up affairs. This is where our heroes find themselves.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is out in search of more things to put up inside the library he's building. Because nothing says 'I am so into this virtual library' than keeping a whole host of physical books and hanging original artwork and antique maps everywhere. At least Grace hasn't had an invention. Yet.

He looks up at the sky, he is always looking up at the sky, and there is that reddish tint to it. Unsettling. Unearthly?

He takes in a slow breath and then breathes in again, hoping to catch some sense of whether or not he should be concerned about that reddish glow. It could just be a very macabre sunset.

But...in his experience, it never ever is.

Browsing the air, Leonhard considers the red and thinks of stars he hopes are long since faded from power. Rarely anything but the slightest of astrologers, he had been lax lately, and not in the way Gustav might have him believe. These streets had, however, drawn him back. Cupcakes aside, ranging through the area as the dark began to make its claim had seemed more likely to grant him some new sight or sense of whatever had been behind that last incident, indeed that last stirring of disgust if he were honest. Disgust at abuse, and at the cowardice he discerned behind it.

As ever, or at least as usual, he is moleskin jacket atop denim, gilded only by his pace. A look here, a look there, no sign of the stirrings that had befallen this area so recently. Still, it had been worth a look after visiting the galleries, checking on works, checking on exhibitions. Sid

Why is Sid here? If asked she would not be able to say. She's been trying to stay out of the city lately, there are just too many memories here, sweet things that have turned sour all thanks to one terrible conclusion of a conversation.

She started off somewhere else, downtown maybe. Campus perhaps. And then she started walking and when she started walking her mind tuned out the world around her, turned inward, and there it stuck. Turning over thoughts and possible pathways and on and on and on until

she blinks, is vaguely aware that this is not an area she's familiar with. That moment of awareness drains away when she realizes where she is. Close to Santa Fe, too close. Place of another memory that, like a popcorn kernal jammed into her gums next to the back-most molar, she just can't dislodge. Her legs are tired and her feet are probably blistered - Vaans weren't meant for long treks. And yet, here she is.

Putting one foot before the other. A memory of a dark day with someone she thought was her friend playing on endless loop.

There's a gallery off the main drag called Common Grounds. Well, it is not so much a gallery as a co-op shop/gallery/whateverish place where known unknowns and unknown knowns can show work and sell handmade scarves and rough-hewn tables and savagely painted canvases and twisted garden sculptures and spiritual sculptures. Local artists and fair trade shit, with direct arrangements with a few artists and artisans in Mexico and points south. A fair amount of religious work too, not the stultifyingly conservative bullshit of American praying hands, but the sort of religious shit that feels challenging, even revolutionary.

The proceeds get funneled together with the proceeds from a small thrift shop, attached (which is closed at this hour) to provide support services for immigrants, legal and illegal, the victims of human trafficking and the like. One of Pan's parishioners has a few pieces there and Sera and Pan are leaving the store and Sera has wrapped a batik day of the dead themed scarf - black and wind, loosely woven enough to be see-through - around her cropped leather jacket and half-see through dress and as they walk out of the store Sera's sliding her arm into the crook of Pan's arm, all intimate, and she's a bit quiet today but sometimes she is quiet, and for reasons that are opaque she is not wearing Insane Heels, but a pair of well-worn Doc Marten's at the bottom of her fishnetted legs and she breathes in as they exit, and looks up.

Doesn't take a repetition for the big priest to heed her. The easy way he lets her take his arm like he's a gentleman and the easy way he walks beside her doesn't speak of romantic entanglement. But there is affection between them. Love. He thinks of her as a daughter. Strangers can tell that just by looking at them.

So she murmurs to him and he hears her and he looks up at the sky. Doesn't think of science when he does. Doesn't think of God moving over the face of the water in the first days either. All of this started with a single note.

The area is, as side streets tend to be sometimes, void of regular foot traffic and it is just these Awakened few who have found their way here. Some of the shops are open of course, though even some of them are closed for the night and the ones that aren't are winding down. It can't be coincidence that the vicinity is this deserted, can it? Of course it can't. These are mages, and in their world so few things are truly coincidential. The shadows cast by the buildings cover them all in a peculiar way as they begin to coalesce together, wreathing them in shade.

Footsteps pound on the concrete. Breaths come hard and fast. Those steps are heavy, coming from someone who is no slight individual. It's the sound of a large man, the kind that you look at and say "I wouldn't want to meet him in a dark alley" if you were to see him on the bus or in a coffee shop. And oh, look where those footsteps are sounding from.

A dark alley.

It may not be the footsteps that the Awakened hear, though it may when they pay attention. And it's hard not to pay attention when that Bitter Wind blows down the street, tingling against their sixth senses. It has a sharp taste to it, sending a chill of relentless, cold anger through their bodies and bones. And then they hear a man scream from that alleyway.

"OH GOD, SOMEONE PLEASE!"

Sid

Sid is not paying attention and yet there is a part of her mind that is always open. Always receptive and perceptive. Slowly sensations filter in. The storm. The light. The inspiration. The visceral.

The Verbena blinks. Blinks again. Is that...Sera and Pan. And over there...Kalen and Leonhard. She frowns. It's not unusual for Awakened to find themselves drawn together. She doesn't understand it but Sid stopped trying to science her way to an understanding of things that aren't meant to be understood. Green things grow from her touch and Mages flock together seemingly at random. But it's never really random, is it?

Footsteps. Sid breathes in and she straightens, a sleeper waking from deep slumber. A swimmer making their way to the surface, no longer drowning. It takes time, time enough for her to see a man running, and that frown deepens. He is coming with a bitter wind, with some strange sensation on the air, she can sense it, almost taste it.

Then someone screams.

Humming, she looks for harmony with something.

He's starting to smile, perhaps a little guardedly under that ominous sky, to respond to Leonhard who refers to him as family in a way as though it were nothing. Or possibly everything. Both? Kalen isn't really in a place to do more than admit he doesn't really understand.

But then that scream. The sense of the other Magi. Sid. Serafine. Pan.

Thank God Pan is here this time. He adores Serafine and Grace and Alexander. But his world is half-swallowed by eternity and dreams and he doesn't want to be the scariest thing the others have going for them. One crippled Flambeau is hardly terrifying.

That he cannot conceive of himself as frightening says something about the world he sees.

He flashes Leonhard a quick, grim smile and starts for where that scream came from. Of course he does.

Leonhard

God's probably blinking, thinks the Jerbiton - and all too wrily for his own liking. The air of Bitter Cold is not pleasant, and it strikes him poorly. Perhaps it's a failure in the moment but he does not think so much of frostnipped Alpine memories so much as nights in flight from the Pogrom, the Enemy, the stinging cold of something akin to hate. He glances to Kalen, meeting the Flambeau's grim smile with pursed eyes.

Yet, the Somebody Please, the running man, it has set him to motion as well. "Hey!" He calls to the large man fleeing the alley, though his legs are carrying him close behind Kalen's. He is suppressing his accent, though it is hardly a chore after so many years in Colorado. He gestures with the magazine towards the alley as he calls for whatever response the large-set man might have. "What the fuck, man?"

What the fuck, man? So gentile, but efficient enough.

Serafíne

Sera wraps her arm all the more tightly through the crook of Pan's elbow. It is like they are woven together, like she has braided them close. She can feel his immediate reaction, the instinctual tension in his body and she gives a sharp, side-sweeping glance at his profile. All aslant. If he starts running, he'll have to drag her with him.

"Let's look and See who's there. I'll look for the people; you look for the Work?"

Somehow, she is humming a half-remembered song beneath her breath.

She feels one lifeform with a sentient mind, running down it with his (because it is a he, she can tell) muscles screaming and lungs burning from frantic exertion. And there is another form...not human. Something else...something cold and angry and single-fucking-minded...chasing after him.

atrox ultio

Kalen and Leonhard are approaching, Pan is bringing Serafine closer and Sid is in the general vicinity so she has full view as she--like the priest--watches for the strands of Quintessential energy that would indicate another Awakened doing Awakened things. With the two Hermetics moving the quickest (and without focusing to do magic), they are the ones that he nearly bumps into as he bursts from the alley, running like the hounds of hell are on his traul.

He is a big man; he's a very big man, actually. It's always hard to tell when someone is running as frantically and flailing as he is, but they might be able to estimate him at about six two, maybe six three. And he's built like a bruiser, the kind of guy that you would expect to bounce at a biker bar where things get rough on a regular basis. He's dressed that way too, in a leather jacket and jeans with a T-Shirt reading emblazoned with some local band or another across it. His hair hits just past his shoulders; in many ways he looks like your stereotypical biker.

But bikers don't run like this. He nearly careens into Kalen, nearly knocks him over. Seeing people seems like a sudden relief, although the panic and fear hasn't left him. "Oh god, you've got to help! I can't get away from it!"

He doesn't slow down as he says it; he rushes right by them and falls to the ground finally when he trips going off the sidewalk. There's a hard, cringe-worthy tumble into the street; he's gonna need to have some medical care. If he gets out of this.

And, of course, there is something else. They hear a pair of...are those hooves? And a low, angry growl as the thing begins to emerge from the shadows. They see the head of a--

Wait a minute, how did a deer get this far into the city? And since when do deer GROWL? But it's not a deer, and that's clear as it comes further out of the shadow. The grey fur of its head, punctuated with a pair of antlers, melts into an avian body with similar-colored wings. And a pair of powerful deer legs are what carry it forward.

And the eyes. The red eyes, glowing like coal embers. It hisses, looking at the five of them. But mostly at the biker.

Sid

Nothing is Happening, nothing is Working. Except for those others. Sera and Pan and herself. The street becomes becomes lighter, verdant, liminal as each Looks and each Sees and what Sid sees...

Doesn't matter what her feelings might be regarding the others. She alters her direction. One step before the other, slow, steady, testing the waters. And another, and another. Until Pan is flanked by a Verbena and a Cultist. "Kalen," she calls but quietly, just wanting to get his attention. If she does, she looks at Leonhard, and tips her head toward their own small group. A silent gesture of Come here. If shit is about to hit a fan, it's best that they group up, yes? Instead of someone crippled shuffling off into the mouth of darkness all alone?

She reaches into her bag for a folded blade which, once out, she unfolds. Lightly digs the point of the tool into the forefinger of her right hand, stopping when a droplet of blood wells up. Rubbing it with her thumb, smearing the red across her fingers, she looks for other Patterns. If she needs to ruin someone or something's Luck today, she will need a target.

"No workings but ours," she says, because greetings are for suckers and for people who are not Awake to the dangers inherent in an ability to reshape the universe with a Will.

Before she can start looking for those Patterns, however, she sees them. Sees the big man running out and looking for assistance, help from a thing he can't get away from. Sid watches him with steady eyes whose distance only seems to add to the sense of agelessness in them. Then she looks at the alley and she digs past the layers of sadness, pain, guilt. She finds that coil of fear - fear for her companions, her friends, these people who aren't really family but who are as close to one as she'll likely ever be again - and she twists it.

"That can't be good."

"Bygone. Peryton. Punker here must have invited its... ungh... you could lay of the pies..." The harrowed expression on Leonhard's face comes into being not from fear but moral quandary. Moral confusion. Frustation, however tinged with something altogether enlivened for some reason. He can scarcely keep his eyes off the antlered thing before them all, but scrabbles to get the Biker back, retreat, buy time and life. Time and breath. Damn, he thinks, damned, he knows... In Latin, he continues, caring not the merest of figs for how pretentious it may seem at first glance, but somebody's unlikely to speak Latin and he's got a beard and a Peryton after him... and Leonhard almost watches as the biker makes his own way backwards now. Almost. Eyes on the lesser beast, the Peryton.

"Seeks vengeance," comes the hurried, harried Latin explanation. "Murderers, of the innocent. Never stops. Tenacity and vengeance given a most resolved flesh. But we mustn't kill it. It's a Bygone." And unspoken but present is his reluctance to allow a death, even of a biker murderer. Even on the say-so of one of the True World's remaining bastions.

Yes, there are Jerbiton who might sit with Merinita, with Criamon, and bemoan their lot. And then there are glimmers, however morally confounding, that point to the world of Wonder that they would reclaim. Perytons. Damn.

"Are you so sure," the Jerbiton asks of the Bygone, returning to English, the force of Truest Nature. "Is there no chance that he might... be innocent?"

Sid

There is a part of Sid that, when she hears this thing is a creature of vengeance, wants to let it do its thing. Is she not also a creature of vengeance? Did she not return to her home to exact a five-year-old revenge on the people that hurt her? Reminded them of her existence, let them know that she is in fact alive, brought her enemies' attention back to her?

Murderers. Murderers deserve what's coming to them, but.

Sid is also a murderer. Well, not really, but she's let people die. She has nearly killed and for a time thought she would kill again. She's not that person anymore, she's changed.

Her eyes are on the biker man as Leonhard speaks, the corner of her mouth twitching like she might smile at the use of Latin, which she understands. If she was going to smile, though, it doesn't resolve into one after all. Her expression is grim.

To this...bygone...she says, "Even if he's not innocent. Are you sure he can't....for lack of a better word," a quick glance up at Pan, "repent? Do you think he can't...I don't know. People learn. People change."

She can feel it in her breastbone; she can feel it between the chambers of her heart. The hidden stars and the visible horizon, tick and tock, just softening around him.

Pan is a murderer.

One could argue that he's done his time and served his debt to society and is now free to move through it without judgment but Pan also has the distinction of being a recovering addict. You get your veins introduced to needles and know what it is to get yourself loaded into a cop car with your buddy's blood caked into the creases of your knuckles while your baby boy screams from his crib at the back of the house and people tend to stop thinking of you as worthy of much of anything though.

Could say it's in the past, this murderousness, but Serafíne has seen him put a bullet into a living thing. That living thing had gone through the Caul. His Bible preaches the extermination of evil.

At the question of penitence Pan catches Sid's eye. Yes that's the word. He takes another drag off the cigarette to keep the ember going just in case he needs it and starts to step his way towards Leonhard and the biker.

Sera says he needs to go. Pan isn't sure if he agrees yet.

If the creature does not charge them then the priest takes the long-haired man by the arm. They're the same height. The same build. The priest stronger than he looks. And unless the biker offers up resistance the priest intends to put the biker's back to the wall so he's hemmed in while the priest crouches and asks a couple of questions.

Kalen Holliday

Leonhard asks about innocence. Sid asks about repentance. Kalen wants no part in a discussion about any of that at this particular juncture.

He takes a breath and looks back to Pan. Sure, there are whole sets of hierarchies for who he was trained to answer to, and those mostly end with Leonhard. It doesn't matter. He looks back to Pan and watches Pan move for the biker.

He turns his eyes back toward the creature, studying it now less because he wants to know how it might die and more for wonder. Because...seriously...wonder.

The creature may be relentless, but patience is not a virture and it steps forward with a low growl rumbling once more. It isn't launching itself into assault yet, but it's getting close. It looks between the five of them, around its prey in a general manner, you get a sense behing those angry red eyes that it's appraising them. How to approach the battle.

"We are never wrong," it says to Leonhard, as if the very thought of them being so is an impossible one to conjure up. The antlered head, those points so razor sharp, swings in Sid's direction. "And blood must be paid by blood. Repent? There's a hiss that sounds distinctly like the emotion behind what might cause a human to snort. "The soul burns for vengeance. There is a debt, and one way to pay it."

Relentless, bitter air. Now it's starting to come together.

As for the poor biker, his eyes widen when Pan hauls him up. Surely the priest isn't going to deliver him to the thing. He starts to struggle but then when he sees Pan's moving him to the wall and not to the fucking murderous talking deer-bird-thing, he doesn't quite resist. Yet.

"What the fuck, man?" That's all he gets out immediately. This is too fucking weird and terrifying for him.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen's attention stays on the creature now, taking in the way it advances, the way it studies them.

And so, being what he is, he takes a step between them. He doesn't care to hold off a creature that is rightfully vengeful. He does take issue with it eating his friends in the process.

"Their worlds are, in at least some senses that matter in this moment, not so absolute. Patience. They are dedicated to justice, if not vengeance. In the end, I do not believe they will stop you." His voice is soft, but clear enough. And, despite the phrasing, that is much more request than command.

Yeah...mark Kalen down for siding with the Bygone in this situation.

Fr. Echeverría

"My name is Father Francisco Echeverría. I'm a priest. All these people, they're the only chance you got of getting outta here if you ain't done nothing you gotta atone for. If you lie to me, I'm gonna know, and I'm gonna walk away."

Pan points the streaming cigarette towards the creature that will have at him if he walks away and pins his attention on the biker.

"Other than you're being chased by that, tell what you're running from."

Leonhard

Protect the Sleepers, they know not wha... No, not enough. Not for those that murder and deny the first stage of truth and wonder: breath. Not enough, those bendy Protocols. Not enough. So, it is to the Code that his instinct reverts more naturally. He had been avoiding this. The Protocols were always so much more of a referee than a judge, but he has his Oath, there went his Word... and still he comes up a blank, trumped by the scenario. Trumped. Kalen moves, says what he says, it fits, it works, it would even get a nod from the Jerbiton but for his own internal frustrations. (I won't see a Bygone again for another twelve years, and this biker puke-in-purse is the cause?!)

There is absolutely nothing, nothing, in the Code (there never really is, not often enough!) to cover this and to pish with the Peripheral Corrigenda even being considered... Consider breath, Leonhard. Consider life, Leonh... Life and death and murder andhere'sanidea, the thought runs before he can stop it. The thought runs all the way to his tongue. His eyes flit from Kalen, to Sid, to Sera, unable to see Pan now, back to the Peryton with his arms outstretched. Not in welcome, not in grandiose prideful gesture, but in inclusive address to the mighty Peryton...

"You are never wrong," he repeats, acquiescing only to fact, to truth. "You are never wrong and your quarry is never innocent, but in your tenacity, in your resolve, your success in meting what is... ah, deserved... you must have been confounded in the past. So long a time, so many murderers like this pig. Have you never been confounded? I expect so, though I do not find it comforting; I merely state the inevitable frustrations you have met in your time, and ask: is there no compromise? Can half a life be taken by two? A third by three? More by more, a burden made an offer to your purpose?"

He turns to the biker. Venom now. Pan speaks to him; Leonhard speaks of him. "Especially since you can be sure of a reckoning for him beyond your own purposes."

Sid

Soon as Pan moves off to move the biker, Sid goes not to follow, but to stand between the creature and him. Guarding the priest at least so long as he chooses to interrogate the man. She will move aside if or when he decides to, but only then. Unlike that night at the Chantry with Thakinyan staring down, she can protect him with more than just her paltry human body, with flesh and blood and bone.

"That's not true," she says quietly. "There are lots of ways to pay a debt. Lots of roads to choose from." She's stalling, really. Buying Pan time to talk to the biker.

Sera wants Pan to get him out of here a bit urgently, but everything is spongy and she doesn't remember whether she's told him that or no, but they're at the mouth of the alley and the girl in the cocktail dress is trailing the man-in-black and the moment feels frozen and fracture and she probably doesn't speak because she still has most of her attention on the moment, the pulse of the moment, the places where the pulses meet and where her senses begin to blur. There's a plea in there, in her body and in her body and in the wordless and rather - well, fucking wordless and helpless appeal in her eyes as she looks at the others, and then she rounds a bit on the Bygone, impatient, bitter, cold and angry. Everything, everything that she is not.

"That's such fucking bullshit!" Just an outburst. Perhaps enough to bring its attention to her. "Such deterministic fucking bullshit. What the fuck - "

They're starting to take sides now, or at least two of them have. Kalen is taking his side with the peryton, for his reasons. Sera has sided against it. And they're all positioned between themselves and this creature, magic thrumming through their persons as they stand off so that Pan can get to the bottom of things, after a matter. Sid and Leonhard, they speak to it and try to find compromise, or buy it time. We'll get to that.

The biker--let's call him John, because John is his name. His last name is Fletcher, but that's not important right now. Anyway, John is being confronted by the impossible, but he's not completely without his senses. He hears the right words, and he understands that this thing is trying to kill him because of a murder he committed, years ago. And Pan is asking about it. He watches the priest for a long moment, uncertain about--well, about all of this. But the thing, it knows. And now the priest wants to know so he can...help? Pass judgment? Who knows; either way, it's his only chance.

"T...ten years ago." He's looking at Pan, not the others. Certainly not that thing. "It was...I was high. Completely methed out, and I was trying to score because I was strung out. It was right down here, actually." He's just realizing that now. It hadn't even occurred to him before, what with the fear and panic of something that should not be running him down.

"I knew a guy, he dealt down here. I was gonna rip him off and it was all going okay. I got the stuff and started to run and he came after me. I had a gun...I went to shoot him and missed..." He can't look at Pan now, his eyes dropping to the ground.

"There was a kid. I didn't notice him in the alley before. Didn't see him until he was already gone. And then I was running away. I got my life back together at that point. Knew how wrong I'd done. Tried to find someone to do right by the kid and I work with charities now and shit, but..."

Yeah. He knows what he's done.

Leonhard tries to reason with the creature and Sid argues that there are other ways to pay a debt, but this is a Bygone. Humans, they have choices that a creature like this doesn't. It has a singular purpose, and as it steps closer--yes, it gets closer, hissing threateningly--they can see the shadow of the creature. The form of a young child, entirely unlike the shadow it should case by its form. "There is no confoundment. The spirit seeks vengeance. I must and will deliver it. Step aside now."

Leonhard

A sideways look finds its way to Sid. It is not a glance, this, though it doesn't remain for long. A look of regret; the Bygone will not be dissuaded. It is a regret that claws behind those brown eyes so briefly looking to Sid, perhaps even into her own, perhaps not, but they pointed that way for a moment. Yet, even though Leonhard's head then turns back to the Peryton, even though there is that movement, that is the only movement he makes. His arms are still outstretched, passive, saddenned. Far more confounded in purpose than the Peryton ever could be, and far more confronted by morals, he might think later if he has the chance, than the biker. Damn.

The Jerbiton's gaze seeks the eyes of the Peryton, whether they meet his or not. The shadow that falls from the Bygone lends his eyes to profound regret. Sorrow. No tears; he is too frustrated behind those eyes, and too set upon what pain might follow. It is a regretted stand, but a stand nonetheless. Kalen was not wrong, his eyes might say to the Peryton. He was not wrong in what he said. This will not stop you but I cannot allow you, sweet Bygone, sweet hidden proof, however much I might wish it so... I will not move but I will not strike.

Sid

Sid bends and twists and braids the threads of Fate around the creature, preparing just in case it does decide to change its target to them. To her friends. And she tries to stall a creature that she doesn't know until...she doesn't know what. Until the biker is deemed deserving of this fate? Until it attacks one or all of them?

Sid doesn't know. She just bends and twists and talks until she can feel it, that effect. That ball of twisted Fate ready to drop down over the creature. Make it harder to hit them or harder to chase them or harder to she doesn't know. She just makes things harder for other people. Will make it harder for this creature if she has to. If it won't be swayed off its path, maybe the spirit that's sent it can be.

It steps forward and Sid doesn't move. "And what will that do?" she asks. She is not talking to the creature now, but to its shadow. Or to it. Is it the same thing? Hell if she knows. "Do you think it'll make you feel better? I can tell you that it won't." Leonhard looks her way but she doesn't look back at him. Her eyes, so dark and brown and filled with forever, fill also with tears. "I can tell you that there's no winning in revenge, there's only ever losing."

Serafíne

So there is a kind of ellision, a lacuna, a space between. Sera is facing the Peryton, has Pan and the biker in her periphery and is aware of them all. She is breathing; shallowly. Hears the man's confession and sees the shadow change and feels something bright and painful beneath her skin. Leonhard, arms open -

- and Sera is rather breathless now. Hears the man's confession and remembers another story and remembers a story without a name or a beginning or an ending. Just a bridge, and then another wordless chorus. Somehow her arms have crossed in front of her, tight beneath her breasts. This happens midstory but she does not remember drawing herself up, tightly wound, nor does she remember loosening them.

Somehow Sera is in motion, though. Walking toward the peryton, perhaps past Leonhard? She stands right the fuck in front of it.

Oh god this is going to hurt.

- then sinks to her haunches, heels coming up, balanced on the balls of her toes in her combat boots. Reaches out and cups her hand in the shadow-of-a-child cast by the bygone-of-vengeance.

Close to the hooves.

Sera knows nothing about Spirit or spirits. The only myths she remembers are the ones that twist the gut, that stick in the back of the throat, that make one's heart beat, with regret, love, loss.

"Listen to him, listen to her," she murmurs, her hand in the beast's shadow, aware of its heaving flanks, aware of the shadow cast against the ground, aware that she has no means of reaching across to the other side, except her voice, and entirely aware that that cannot really be enough. "Hear them." A glance, up the elegant, shiver-cold beast's frame, piecemeal.

"We will find some other way to make this right."

"Please. Let go."

If the biker is Catholic or Protestant or Buddhist or an atheist or doesn't give two shits about religion or his soul or any of this it doesn't matter. He starts to speak. Starts to confess. This is the only chance he's going to get. The priest has already told him that. It's not a proper confession and they're skipping over penance and an act of contrition. In an alleyway where a former meth addict killed a child with a missed shot it's closer to last rites than anything else.

Francisco Echeverría has no room to judge anyone for anything they've done ten twenty thirty years ago. He doesn't judge. That's not his job. He casts aside the cigarette and removes his rosary from the pocket of his jacket and begins to whisper. The whispering goes on:

"Dominus noster Jesus Christus te absolvat; et ego auctoritate ipsius te absolvo ab omni vinculo excommunicationis (sespensionis) et interdicti in quantum possum et tu indiges."

As the others begin to pass their own judgments and take their own stances before the Bygone the priest makes the sign of the cross before the sinner. All of them are sinners. It's the biker he's hoping to allow to forgive himself before he either dies or flees the alleyway for the last time.

"Deinde, ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen."

Whatever happens next is up to the Bygone but the priest doesn't walk away.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen hears what John says. And he believes in redemption. Given the choice, he'd leave him to live and repent. He is not unforgiving. He does not believe in a universe without forgiveness.

Or justice. Which is not the same as vengeance. But there are only so many left to stand for the innocent left. If this creature's will and his do not align here (ad make no mistake, they do not), he is more willing to let a man die here and let the peryton move on to its next (and hopefully more just) quest.

There are acceptable sacrifices. Sacrifices. They were never meat to be easy. Never meant to be without cost. John is an acceptable sacrifice. Pan and Sera and Sid and Leonhard are not.

The choice is not without weight, but it is easy.

He walks up to where Sera is, kneels beside her, and wraps his arms around her. As long as she doesn't set herself at the peryton, he thinks the beast will simply fling itself past them. Pan will leave it be. Sid and Leonhard...seem to be not about to actively intervene.

Sacrifice.

A peryton, it is said, does not stop for anything until vengeance (not justice) is served. It is not a creature of justice; this is not about balancing the scales for it. This is about the spirit inside, the soul of a young child that was ripped from life far too soon just because he had the misfortune to be wandering in the alley while his mother was off doing...well, let's just call it something something else. That spirit was so young and it didn't understand what was happening to it. It was alive and then suddenly it was just a memory of pain, a scared and hurt and angry feeling that has haunted this alleyway for a decade now.

Until the creature heard its cry. Heard it from so far away, as the man who turned him from a living, breathing boy named Alan whose favorite thing in the world was the feel of sun on his face into a feeling, a spirit, a memory. And even that was not the case; no one remembered him. Not even his mother could remember him, long gone herself from an overdose (suicide, really, even if it wasn't purposefully so). But John Fletcher, he did. He remembered Alan, whose name he didn't know, every day of his life. It haunted him, no matter what he did that was good. And when he cut through this alley tonight, those memories gave Alan's spirit a voice, and it called. And the peryton heard.

There is nothing that can stop a peryton. Reality says that. But these five, they do not hold to the rules of reality. They bend and twist and mold them like clay, even when there are consequences (and there are, and they'll be felt). And so Serafine beseeches not the creature, who has no choice, but the mind of the spirit inside. And somehow, she reaches through to it, past the perytron's red glaring gaze. And she tells it one simple thing:

Peace.

For a memory of a boy that knew nothing of pain, peace is an unknown concept. But it bleeds in, and hope prevails just as Pan is terrifying poor John with what seems like Last Rites (but in truth give him hope and forgiveness). That bleeding peace, like the blood in the sky, seeps through and allows Sid's words to be heard. Lets the look in Leonhard's eyes be noticed and felt. Sees Kalen protecting Sera, in an act of selflessness.

And the red glare in those eyes grows, seems like it might explode with the heat of a volcano...and then vanishes. The shadow returns to that of a--

Well, as natural as a two-legged giant bird with a deer's head's shadow might look. The creature's eyes, now a soft brown, look surprised as it looks over the five of them. This has never happened to it before. And it may never happen again.

But it happened here and now.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does not see the creature's eyes change. Not with his head dropped down beside Sera's. He does not close his eyes, but his world is more a world of breaths than of sights. Sounds.

He breathes in and there is no leap. No rustling of feathers as the creature springs.

He breathes out and there is stillness.

He breathes in again and there are no hooves skimming past him. There is only the scent of the creature and Sera and the concrete that holds echoes of the past and a child's blood.

He breathes out. Stillness.

He looks up and the creature is there. Still.

He smiles and lets his head drop again to whisper into Sera's ear, then releases her and rises slowly.

Kalen Holliday

"Has anyone ever told you that you are fucking incredible?" Those are the words. The tone might say something else. Something more intimate. But those are the words.

Serafíne

Sera is shaking; up close, Kalen can feel that. When he wraps his arms around her she thinks he's going to try to drag her away and there's a resistance beneath the frame of those tremors that is small but determined. She can hear Pan praying and feel the brilliance of his resonance and her throat is a bit raw and - up close - Kalen can hear her singing a bit. This melody that is more spoken than sung and is so sotto voce that he can hear it only because he is right beside her and the truth is she isn't precisely looking up and everything is charged and Sera,

sings. Quietly. Keeps singing as the moment shifts and changes. Watches the shadow change where it cuts across her forearm. That's when she turns, closes her eyes, and dips her head to rest her brow on Kalen's shoulder. Listens as he murmurs to her, opens her eyes close enough that she just sees him piecemeal. The thread of his pulse in his throat, before he pulls away.

She hasn't gotten up yet. Looks a bit dazed, really.

And reality is probably about to sucker punch her.

Leonhard

Other than the arms which lower at his side as if wilting, bereft of purpose, Leonhard cannot move. The event has an impact upon him, and one which defies even Will, he realises. The flare of the peryton's eyes and the way they turn to brown are uppermost in his view. Regardless of his sense of Resonances, of the sound of breathing, the other sounds of the broader city farther afield, it was the eyes... the eyes... Somewhere in himself, brutal as it may seem, he almost mourns the loss of that red, that density of purpose. Perhaps the peryton will not long stay so neutered, and he hopes it will not, however much it must mean another murder. A quandary, but one with a purpose. A paradox of life, given the flesh of a Bygone.

He thinks of those killed for their Vis, boiled and battered down into Tass. Centuries past, this was common he muses. Centuries past, there were buffaloes like a carpet of hide... So few remain, and their eyes turn brown when denied. And he cannot move, watching the peryton that remains and wondering how much of it is sufficient to the peryton that may yet be. That may yet survive.

And of the four Mages? Pride, and... he with the Resonance of Inspiration himself... Inspiring pride to be more accurate. Gentle. Resolute. Prepared. Traditions.

"You might want to fuck off now," he growls without turning to the biker that had wrought so much. Protect the Sleepers they know not what they do, until they do, and look what that has subsequently also wrought. This was no victory of peace, he thinks. Not in the long run. Not enough, anyway. A lauded moment in his heart, yes, but one of disdain for certain possible consequences. He turns to the biker. He does not move. He looks only to the biker. The biker.

Sid

Sid stands still when Sera walks past. She stands still when Kalen makes his way forward, lowers himself, wraps his arms around the Ecstatic. She stands still as Pan prays for John. She stands still and she stands guard, because she may not seem like it, but if the creature can't be reached well. She will continue to stand between it and its mark until she can't stand any longer.

They seem to have gotten through to it. The shadow changes, the eyes stop glowing, turn brown. Sid does not immediately release the effect she's worked around her, not yet. She is watching it, this thing. This creature of vengeance, committing what it looks like to memory. Because, she knows (thinks), someday it may come for her. Or for one of her friends. Or someone else another night.

The blood colors seep out of the sky as the sun continues to set in the west, and Sid lifts her chin. She relaxes, lifts her glasses an inch from her face and she scrubs away the moisture there. And she releases her Working, lets the threads of Fate fall back into whatever order they had been in before.

She looks at Sera and Kalen. Safe. She looks to Leonhard. Safe. She looks back at Pan. Safe. Then she's not looking at anyone, her chin lowered and her gaze to the ground a moment.

They are all busy with their own workings, their own thoughts, their own whatevers, maybe they won't notice when the tall, quiet redhead begins to make her way away. Not toward the shops, but to the east, toward the neighborhoods with their small squat houses and their overgrown and overrun lawns.

Kalen Holliday

He's starting to rise, to pull away from her, but she catches his hand in hers. There is one thing they haven't done. One last thing.

One last thing they gave to an Archmage that they could give to a boy.

He settles back beside Sera, wraps one arm around her and catches up a handful of grit from the concrete. Dirt. Ashes. Little bits of broken glass. Perhaps even the shards of dreams.

He is relatively sure those are what he feels biting into his skin.

He breathes out, sends that dust and those dreams shards off into the air. Watches them for a few seconds and then breathes back in and lets his eyes close.

You might want to fuck off now.

The priest shoots the Hermetic a look that very clearly says Shut the fuck up but doesn't open his mouth to rebuke him. Just puts a hand on the biker's elbow so he can guide him away from the Bygone and the spirit of the child his poor aim killed. A murderer about to lead a murderer away from vengeance.

"Come on," he says. "We gotta talk about your penance."

And maybe do a little bit of converting. He doesn't know if they'll have time. The younger man looks like he needs stitches.

Leonhard

To say the Hermetic is stirred by the look from Pan wouldn't be entirely wrong, though it is not a bristling or a response in any way insistent that, yes, the biker can indeed fuck off now. Catching the look from the corner of his eye at best, at best, he is really only looking at the biker. Looking at living proof that penitence costs those that support it. A coddled soul is not enough, he knows, and the peryton's smell draws him back to it. Not often you get a Bygone barely feet from you, after all.

Penance. The biker can be coddled in his penance; it is the peryton he considers. Purpose.

atrox ultio

John flinches at the growled words from Leonhard. The man has been pushed now, toward the ends of reason by this strange and nearly deadly occurance, but he recognizes a look of judgment, and he understands. He turns his eyes to the ground, doesn't see the look that Pan shoots the Jerbitron. And then he's being pulled and guided away by the priest, and he goes.

Serafine and Kalen separate the veil that makes time a linear thing, search back into the past. They see Alan, a young boy of maybe six. A bright boy, warm and friendly, who had the distinct misfortune of being born to the wrong person in the wrong circumstances at the wrong time in the wrong location. Any of those things changing may have meant he lived, but such is the way of fate. He had bright, intelligent green eyes and a ready smile, and he was also naive even for a boy of his age. He was an inquisitive boy who liked exploring this dangerous world he lived in. It only stood to reason that eventually it would result in his early end. He didn't have a lot of friends and there was no one who would help his mother (who would stick their hand out for a heroin junkie?), so he came with her when she needed to score. That brought him to a nearby building and then he heard something in the alley and, innocently, went to look. And there it was. They will remember him like no one else will.

Sid moves to quietly slip away, and the peryton looks at her a moment before it notices Leonhard looking back at it. It shifts its head to the right, regarding the Hermetic. There is a look that might, if you considered it just right, be one of respect. Maybe it's not; maybe it's the light. And then, without a word (because what is there to say?) it shifts and folds in on itself, becoming a crow. The ferryman of the souls of the dead, flying up and away into the blood red sky.

And the mages are there alone, like none of it had ever happened. No blood, no violence, no dead body. Not anymore.

Kalen's kneeling. Sera is crouched, balanced on the balls of her feet, forward a bit, the dress with its criss-cross lacing creeping up her thighs; and there's Kalen rising and she reaches for him and grasps his hand and he can feel something in her; some urge to action, some sense of dislocation that feels - resonant, right? Some liminal memory in the air around her. They have done this before.

Sera is still singing, beneath her breath, beneath the skin of her breath. It is quiet. Kalen kneels beside her again and her hand laces with his and she tightens her grip and back, and back, and back they go and the moment is shimmering into itself, is melting into its constituent pieces, is replacing and repiecing itself.

There is a boy. There is always a boy and she does not hear his name in the past and she will never remember it,

but she will remember him.

By the time they surface, the peryton is gone. Sid has slipped away. Pan is witnessing to a murderer whose confession sounded to her ears so much like -

- Sera comes up for air. Her nose is bleeding. Her hands are shaking a bit.

She rocks back onto her heels though, tightening her grip on Kalen's hand enough to help her to stand.

Glances at Leonhard and the empty alley and the street left behind, and then at Kalen, and has no idea what to say. He's already walking away. Footsteps a soundless sort of echo, more a retreating resonance that paints the night in an oddly receding surreality.

If she closes her eyes tightly enough she can hear, perhaps, the rumble of Pan's voice as he witnesses to the ex-addict around the way. Feel his light like an X-ray right?

She tells Kalen, "Thank you." What else can she say?

Kalen Holliday

"Anytime," Kalen says softly. He reaches out, not to touch her face but to catch her nose between two fingers and press. He seems unconcerned about the blood, or really the fact that she is bleeding. He knows all too well what a life-threatening amount of blood looks like. "Be still."
