Being a Badass With a Sword's Not That Hard

Serafíne

He falls asleep on a mattress in a bare room and there is - fuck - magick - the dark sweet fall of sleep and then, and THEN: you know. Waking again, the strange disorientation that accompanies waking in a dream. The sudden arrest, honeyed and surreal.

--

It is dark, midnight or later, he can feel that in his bones, and Samir finds himself standing in what seems to be the lower formal garden of a manor house, which is bright and dark and brooding against a spangled night sky. Everything here is fine and strange and ordered; well kept boxwoods and perfectly pruned roses in a sunken garden surrounded by cedars. At the center, a pool of dark water reflects the scattered stars in the sky. Marble stairs lead to the dark bulk of the manor house, or down toward an open lawn silvered with starlight, framed by a dark copse of wild, wild woods.

--

There's a girl there, too, seated on one of the marble plinths beneath a statue of Diana the Huntress. This great mass of curly dark hair pulled away from her face. Her burnished skin, her quick dark eyes. She's watching him and rises when he seems to wake, to come-to, not steady precisely, but quick, white-rabbit like. Seems like she belongs here: and it is Sera, of course it is Sera, but different from the Sera he knows. More like the eighteen-year-old who stumbled out of Heathrow so-many-years ago. The dark hair, the thrift-store chic.

"C'mon. I think we gotta find you a way back into your own head."

Already in motion, but whether they go down-the-stairs or up, she seems to be leaving up to him.

Samir

This isn't a mindscape he entered into against his own volition. It doesn't even feel like a mindscape. He's been in a mindscape before. Two separate Seekings and the feeling of entering into a dream world is a difficult one to describe. Like it takes a certain amount of practice and skill to tell another person what it feels like to fall asleep and then realize you're dreaming. Most folks never realize they're dreaming.

He doesn't realize he's hallucinating back in the meatspace.

Samir does not have the conscious realization that he is in a dream. Moves forward on instinct. His subconscious doing all the work and this isn't a place his subconscious would have built. He moves forward through it without thought or fear all the same.

He does recognize Sera though Sera is younger than he knows her to be. Will not register the difference until he awakens later.

"Do we have to? Yours is way nicer than mine."

But his subconscious is the one leading him. His subconscious knows that the root of the problem isn't the outside world. It's him. Can't stay in the demesne forever. Their combined motion takes them down the stairs and out beneath the star-dotted night.

Serafíne

And one more:

Dice: 3 d10 TN6 (3, 5, 10) ( success x 1 )

Serafíne

The creature gives him a direct, skeptical look. Every line of her teenage self - the bravado, the arrogance, the raw, unembellished challenge - evident in the body she wears. Narrow hips and skin-tight denim, this wide old leather belt. Silly fur vest like a dead muppet over a band t-shirt and an expression that is direct and not-especially reassuring. He makes a joke and she favors him with a smirk, not precisely mirthless but private somehow. Retained. Withheld.

--

And off they go. The lacey, star-basted shadows of the lawn, the dark trees all around, the lane through the hedgerows and the strangest things somehow at once: within view and without. Barren hillside rising from a moor, dark brooding hulk of a something down a darker lane that looms larger than it seems. Passing hint of a conical-tower and then -

- and then London, the headlong rush of it, headlights smearing through the fog, neon, the Eye of London bright against a dark-cloudbanked sky, rain this constant wash, the bright lights of the tube leering and a hundred, a thousand unseeing faces and -

--

Quite abruptly, the world changes. He's inside his trailer on that dry creek bed out in the desert. The place is filthy. Half-empty Chinese take-out containers and half-eaten pizza, a pot on the stove with cloudy water and three-day-old hot dogs, cheetohs ground into the floor empty mountain dew bottles sticky all around.

Something terrifying outside, too: onetwothreefourfivesixseven voices screaming his name.

He is: very much alone.

Samir

That's about what he would have been expecting would happen when he went into his own dreamscape and why he told the young seer that her place was nicer than his. Nice is relative. For all he knows there's a monster chained up in the basement that has to subsist on a cocktail of tears and blood or else its howls attract ghosts.

Sam doesn't know how fairytales work.

Doesn't know how dreamscapes work either. Here they are though hurtling once they get into it and he can hear the yawning of the rules changing like stepping out of a pressurized cabin into a void and when his awareness shifts from that manor in the countryside to his trailer out in the middle of nowhere.

Even in a dream the mess makes him feel cold. No other feeling comes over him. Just one of the need to escape like he can drag himself up out of a nightmare if he just tries hard enough. Has to walk across the filth to test and see if he can open the trailer door.

Serafíne

The filthy crunches beneath his feet. Pretty sure he can hear the skittering of something sly and susserant disappearing into the shadows as he heads toward the door. The closer her gets the loud the noise in his head becomes: those onetwothree-four-five-six-seven dissonant voices growling and screeching in half-a-dozen plus one tongues. Even the doorknob is grotesquely sticky and there's a wet ca-rrrunch beneath his right boot like a shattered femur eviscerating a sick-wet-lung but the door opens-opens-opens-

- the sick, slick assault of hot-and-hungry breath, something dead-and-rotten from six plus one heads yawing over this ugly, molting body screams at him, needle-sharp teeth and gummed up bits of flesh stuck behind them.

wrong/sick/dead/broken/false/filth/samir

Each head screams a different word and if he doesn't get back inside he's probably going to get snapped the fuck in two as they are all careening at him from the broken gray landscape.

Samir

Nope.

No way of knowing if he would be as calm about this if it were happening to him in his actual trailer and not inside his mind. Depends on if magick had been worked on him. Depends on a lot of things.

His subconscious very much wants for him to stay alive. That's why his conscious mind is overrun so easily by anxiety. The thought of dying used to terrify him. Old fears are hard to slough off. So it persists here.

He steps back inside and slams the door shut. Closes himself up with the wrongness that isn't liable to get him by the midsection and pull him apart. Disgusting sure the crunching and the sticking and the smell of rotting food is disgusting as fuck but it isn't going to kill him.

In his trailer there is a small desk. On that small desk is a setup consisting of two computer monitors and a laptop. That's where he leaves his cellphones and his deck. Everything that lets him contact the outside world. It's to the desk he turns now.

Samir

[perc + aware!]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (2, 3, 7, 8, 9, 10) ( success x 4 )

Serafíne

There's something that looks like his deck.

There's something that seems like too-many-cell phones.

--

Filth-encrusted keyboards covered with a line-up of whispering, carnivorous ants, but: keyboards nonetheless. Monitoring and humming electronics that have the sick-sweet smell of insects that survive on warmth and human filth burrowing inside.

--

(Somewhere in the midst of this: he understands it - briefly, wholly, entirely as metaphor. He also knows: that he is not alone. The sense of the girl: visceral/enthralling/liminal, invisible but near-to-hand.)

Samir

If this is a metaphor then he may be totally fine if he touches a keyboard that has fucking ants crawling all over it. May be better than fine since that would be conquering his fears and powering on in spite of the filth and the lack of order and so on and so forth his subconscious doesn't care about all that so much as it cares about staying alive it's the higher-functioning parts of his brain that have gotten it so fucked up.

The other part of the metaphor may be that yeah okay the filth won't kill him but he has to get out of this trailer and rejoin the real world and his subconscious isn't thinking about that so much as it is thinking well okay how do you kill a seven-headed zombie dragon. It's not like he has a sword just lying around here somewhere.

He's a fucking wizard. He could conjure up a sword if he fucking wanted to.

Still: tries to pick up the deck. That's how he works his magick. He's a technomancer. Even his subconscious doesn't believe he can surpass a necessary instrument yet. Hasn't ever tried to.

Serafíne

Boom

That computer explodes in his goddamned hands.

--

Or maybe it simply turns: on. This strange, sick, wavering scroll of characters on the screen like the aura of a goddamned migraine but what the hell. They they are, glowing green-against black.

The dreambeat of noise from without: loud loud loud too-loud.

--

This happens simultaneously, here and there. The computer explodes in his hand/turns on. There is a place where he is in searing pain, tatted flesh hangs like scorched paper from the meat of his palm and the pain or no: his hand is whole, entire, just ants scurrying over the blunt edge of his fingertips, their marching drumbeat.

Samir

If the worst thing that can happen is he gets a hand blown off trying to pick up the handheld computer that lets him do everything then that is probably why he has two hands. Humans evolved to have their hands replaced by robot hands in the event that their evil darkside-serving fathers lop one off in a lightsaber battle they can just replace the missing appendage and move on with their lives.

He doesn't know who his father is. That's beside the point. On one side of what's happening the computer blows his fucking hand off and for a moment that sucks pretty hard. Somehow even in a dreamscape it hurts and of course he screams.

Or nah. It's just ants. Just ants ignoring him because why on earth would ants care about what he's doing. He shakes the handheld computer a bit to try and get them off the keys. Squints against the glow.

There's a program on the handheld computer for making something out of nothing. Hard to concentrate enough to find it and input what he wants with that seven-headed asshole screaming but Sam has a knack for concentrating in spite of distractions. It should just appear in the overhead cabinet space that he uses to store books and random hunks of metal. 'Should' is a useless word. It either will or it won't.

It will.

"That's more like it."

--

Where? God, who knows. The walls are crawling and he has the sensation that the whole place could be seized the roof peeled back like a sardine tin and the darkness without made the darkness within and his hands are burning (no: just ants, a colony of ants nibbling at the tips of his fingers, sloughing up the dead skin from the trenches between the keys).

--

Should?

Yeah, okay. It will, it is, it does fucking appear.

Hell, he could've made it appear in his goddamned hand instead of settling for a cabinet.

Samir

Even in his subconscious Sam is a humble piece of work. Could have made it appear in his goddamned hand. They can talk about the psychoanalytical significance of his sticking to the script reality has written for him even though the rules don't apply in the trailer and also hello he follows the rules plenty and still ends up hallucinating and mood swinging and drowning under white noise. Rules haven't gotten him anywhere. Order doesn't mean shit.

Or maybe he just really likes opening doors and finding shit where it's supposed to be. Like a prime-infused sword is supposed to be in the overhead cabinet where all his miscellaneous shit lives.

Whatever. In the hand that's screaming from remembered pain he takes up a sword that he does not know how to use and sets down the deck. Considers the significance of the not-knowing-how-to-use-it-ness and executes one more program before clipping it onto his waistband.

Nerd.

[entropy 1: locate weakness. base diff 4, leaving it there bc fuck it. also using corr bc he can't see the thing yet.]

Dice: 3 d10 TN4 (3, 6, 6) ( success x 2 )

Serafíne

As if knowing or not-knowing how to use it matters here but: he opens the door and SWORD and he straps it to his body SWORD and there is from without an ungentle, urgent, rattling roar and a low-stink like a thousand anaerobic microbes dying and then: then: then: well fuck.

Whatever he was trying seems to have worked.

Another shuddering thump against the trailer door.

The thing outside is the size of a small dinosaur or large elephant, seven necks, seven goddamed weaving heads, this weird narrow body molding and slouching into indifference all tattered in the center and it is flinging itself against his front door. Yup: that is definitely where the fuck it is.

Samir

The name of the theory is If He Hits It Where It's Weak It Will Hurt More.

This is not a theory Samir has ever tested before. So maybe it's just a hypothesis. A hypothesis that could have him getting the shit bit out of him by a fucking seven-headed paleolithic menace that smells like everything he never knew he needed to be afraid of and of course the concern is that it's going to kill him but it would kill him if he stayed inside too.

If he dies here he'll just wake up atop the bed in Kiara's apartment and probably more crazy than he was before. Might as well die doing something badass like trying to kill a swamp beast with a sword.

So he waits until it's near enough his door for him to strike and then he strikes the inexpert strike of someone who has never swung a fucking sword before.

Serafíne

He has a goddamned sword and he surges through the filth and he's thinking about dying and how if he dies here he maybe just wakes up somewhere where he was but isn't that always true except for the waking up, the assembled consciousness, the machine language of life-death and the filthy trailer crawls beneath his hands and feet and he flings open the door and there is

hot death

blasting at him from without, wretched and stinking three swimming faces five seven warming, swarming tearing, hunks from his skin, the acid-barf-blast of a broken, unhinged jaw, the smearing hideousness of a laughing cataract of awareness and he hacks (clumsy) makes contact (clumsy) , and hacks (clumsy) again and thinks time the solid feedback of all jarring up his goddamned arms of CONTACT, dead-thing hissing the grotesque release of air from some vague bladder and then he

hacks again but this time it is no-hack but a swing and that point of weakness in the decaying breast where the sad meat-heart pulses there one more time and the piston-like gush of blodd from the broken wound again and again and again now a rhythm in his arm a grace to it the forward force the will the need the broken-thing breaking into

Everything is wrong. Everything is wrong. Everything is broken.

He sinks into sleep.

Went burrowing into his mind on a Thursday. Wakes on Saturday, ten minutes to noon. The Culist who slept sitting up throughout is gone now. Left two or three hours ago.

He through is raw, he has to take a piss, he's starving, and his mind is fucked the fucking fuck up, but you know. The walls aren't speaking to him anymore.

Nothing is.

To sleep and dream.

Samir

[obligatory "how crazy are you today" roll]

Dice: 6 d10 TN7 (1, 2, 2, 2, 7, 9) ( success x 2 )

Samir

For those of you playing along at home: this is the second day in a row where Samir has recognized that he was hallucinating and attempted to reassert his place on the sane side of Paradox and Paradox has reminded him that it is stronger than he is. The hallucinations seem realer now than they did before he tried to rise up out of it.

Which means when Kiara lets Sera into her apartment today he's in the guest room with the door closed and a pillow over his head. He hasn't come out since this morning's expedition to clean the bathroom.

The door is not locked or barricaded like it was last time. It's just closed.

Serafíne

Our Sera has been here before. In that very guestroom, in fact, though she never slept in the bed. The building proper does not feel the way Kiara feels and it is a strange sensation for her to be riding up all alone in the elevator. Sid's back home, sleeping, wedged as far beneath the velvet green couch in the living room as she can get (which is not far, she's a big dog), Dan's working with one of his clients, and Sera - well.

It's early enough in the evening that she's probably only recently awoken or at least has only recently finished her tea-and-whiskey-and-crumpets breakfast and put on the things she has that pass for clothes and left her house - in time to see the sun before it sets.

--

The front door opens. The front door closes.

Amidst the innumerable hallucinations: another. A knock at the door.

Samir

Yesterday Grace told him that she thought he wanted her to go away because he had slammed the door when he heard her and Kiara speaking out in the entryway. He had mistaken them for hallucinations. It took Grace identifying herself for him to get up and open the door.

So he hears the knock at the door. But all of the noises he has been hearing lately have been threatening or terrifying. Sera will have to excuse him if he sounds a bit unhinged when he says, "GO AWAY."

Serafíne

Mind 2 / Prime 2 - Calm / Hope's Birth. Difficulty: 5 -1 (using a focus she doesn't need)

Dice: 3 d10 TN4 (4, 8, 10) ( success x 4 ) [WP]

Serafíne

Correspondence 2 to get that effect to Samir. Difficulty 5.

Dice: 3 d10 TN5 (2, 5, 8) ( success x 3 ) [WP]

Samir

[awareness]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (1, 1, 4, 5, 8, 9) ( success x 2 )

Serafíne

He shouts Go Away and hey, that particular noise that asserted itself through the cacophony stops.

"It's Sera," the distracted murmur from the other side of the door. Her hand is still on the wood, and there's something music about the intonation of her name. A beneath-the-breath hum that sounds like the edge of the lullabye. If that is an hallucination, at least it is a soothing one. Feels almost like the crooning noise one makes to an injured animal.

And then some particular note - what is it about a lullabye? - dovetails into another, and it isn't even a major interval, no. It is something quietly minor, some hint of dissonance that seems settling rather than threatening.

This warm pulse of not-precisely-wellbeing, but perhaps instead: a strange calm, of the the-world-is-fucked-up-but-you-can-survive-it sort.

Samir

Around the same time that Sam is recognizing the Working of someone he may or may not recognize Sera is identifying herself through the door. Thus far his hallucinations have only been of the auditory variety. The day they start to manifest as physical entities with whom he can interact is the day the rest of them will have to start worrying about a Marauder taking up residence in Denver.

So Sera starts to hum. Sam peels the pillow off his head and goes to the door and opens it.

That sense of calm comes over him like a drug haze. His hair is unrestrained and he's wearing a pair of jeans and a hooded sweatshirt that has seen better days. Socks instead of bare feet. His eyes are a bit bloodshot from not sleeping and he's been chewing on his lips. Nervous habit.

"Hey," he says. He sounds as worn out as he looks. Steps back and holds the door open enough that she can read an invitation in the motion if she wants to. "What's up?"

Serafíne

Sera is dressed 'up' today in a (very) short pleated plaid skirt and a loose man's button-down beneath her favorite leather jacket, which has been altered and augmented with patterned studs and patches and zippers and fobs and safety pins, of course safety pins, and she has a bicycle chain wrapped three times around her slender throat as a choker and her shit-kicker boots and thigh-high fishnets, the neat little point of joinder between garter and garment visible, yes, and marked with a sweet little black bow.

Sunglasses hide her eyes and give him a doubled-reflection of himself. Behind those lenses she is giving him a quick, ticking sort of once-over.

"I heard you were in a pretty bad place." Her right shoulder curls and he steps back and the door is open and she can take that as an invitation, and so she does. "Thought I'd see if I could help. You don't look like you've slept much."

Longer study of his face with that, though again: her own eyes are concealed behind her glasses. There is that sense of fixed attention that feels avian in that precise moment - perhaps it is the combination of delicacy and precision.

Samir

The fact that he can't see her eyes would make him nervous if she had not forced his mind into calmness. As it stands he doesn't feel the same compulsion to try and meet her attention that he may have otherwise. Certain people he is okay with talking to without eye contact and certain people he is not.

Hard to tell where Sera lies on that spectrum. They haven't spoken to each other in months.

All that's in the bedroom is a closet with a set of closed doors and a mattress and boxspring without a frame to hold it off the floor. It is still made with hospital corners. She can see the imprint of where he had been lying a moment before. The ghost of a dent at the far stage-left side of the mattress. A pillow tossed aside.

Right now he hovers by the wall with his hands in the pockets of his hoodie rather than moving to sit. He does not engage in any of the rituals he would normally even if he is looking at the bike-chain choker instead of her face.

"I don't know how anybody can sleep through this."

Serafíne

Is he made uncomfortable by her eyes being hidden? (Per + Empathy) / Seeing Past the Mask

Dice: 7 d10 TN5 (1, 1, 3, 3, 5, 5, 7) ( success x 3 ) [Doubling Tens]

Serafíne

The bike-chain-choker is simply wrapped, the ends left loose. Three loops around her neck, inside the crisp white collar, above the sharp cut of her collarbone. Something about the juxtaposition of metal and skin.

"Dreaming's one of the ways we work through our shit."

The quick twist of her mouth, wry. Her right thumb slips all thoughtless over the bronze ring she always wears on her right index finger.

"People who are sleep-deprived enough start hallucinating on their fucking own. Without any of the rest of it.

"What about meditating? Have you tried that?"

Samir

Sam frowns when she uses the word 'hallucinating.'

Maybe that's why they call it Quiet. Because the reality that the rest of the world hears falls away decibel by decibel until all the afflicted is left with is his own madness. Last time Sera saw him he was just about blind by it. Sensory overload and too-close distance to the attack that put him there.

Today is one of those days when he can't ignore the things he's hearing. When he accepts them as real. For a moment he realized he was hallucinating and tried to fight it but the noises only crescendoed.

"How would meditating help?"

Serafíne

"I don't know that it would," she tells him, still quiet and pretty strangely sober for a Sera. This sharp breath out. "But there's a disconnect between what you're seeing and the reality everyone else is sharing, right now. I've been on some bad trips.

"This is different, right? But not that different. You've got a fucked up concussion because you broke the rules everyone else agrees to and so now you're getting hit with the very edge of what it would be like if we didn't agree on any of it, any of it at all.

"But you're not some teenager who took a windowpane and is watching the ceiling melt. Your mind belongs to you. You've got a Will.

"I mean it seems to me that you can maybe suffer-through right? And it'll all come out in the wash. Or you can try to wrestle with it."

Samir

Nothing the Cultist is saying isn't true except for maybe the part where he ended up in this predicament because of a spectacular display of backlash. He had not been performing vulgar magick at the time of the breakdown. Kiara did him the kindness of keeping the particulars about the inciting incident off of Ginger. Means he won't have to relive it later when he finally gets back to his trailer and recharges his phone.

The problem is Sam has been wrestling with it for several days. Every time he fails to pin it down he runs the risk of making it worse. He will have to try again later. Right now even if he feels no distress and feels as if everything is going to work out in the end he is not physically capable of accepting that that far-off persistent scream or those two voices whispering under the floorboards or the sound of blood dripping behind the drywall aren't real.

He'll survive until tomorrow. Then he can try again.

"Yeah," he says. She can see on his face that he isn't convinced because Samir is a terrible liar. Or he wasn't listening. His eyes had been slowly sinking from that bike chain down to the floor as she went on speaking. Now he blinks and his eyes snap back up to her face. Would meet her eyes if those shades weren't between them. "Yeah, no, you're totally right."

Serafíne

"You don't believe me." Her mouth twists, wry. This strange, enduring tension between her absolute forwardness, her challenge, her bravado, and something else very real, all sharp and quick, beneath. Bravado wins out, always. Or at least, it is almost all the world sees and that must be the way she likes it. Look at how she's dressed.

"I can help you, if you want to try it. I can take you to a dream-realm. It's mine - but I think from there I could find a way for your back your own dreams, not as a Sleeper, but with your eyes open.

"Or at least, I can help you sleep, mind and body, for real. Then tomorrow, you'll be stronger."

Samir

For a moment he looks as if he's going to attempt to argue with her. Like no no no I totally believe you. But he is too zenned out to argue with her right now especially when he can't lie to begin with.

Of course he doesn't believe her. He's hearing the earth screaming and every time he walks past Kiara's house plants they start talking shit. Logic doesn't have a lot of pull here.

Sleep though. That's the one thing he's found makes it so he can't hear all this shit. Makes it easier to deal with the next day. Sam considers her offer. Though his gaze drifts away again it's because he's thinking. It's less effort to accept help than to try and turn it down.

He's learning. Sort of.

"Alright," he says. Looks back up from the floor. "Thank you."

Serafíne

"Alright to sleep?" Clarification is pretty damned necessary. Consent, see: before she goes meddling with another's person's mind, another person's dreams. "Or to sleep-and-dreams?"

Samir

The world is fucked up but he can survive it.

Sera asks him to pick one of the two options and he laughs an exhausted laugh that flashes teeth but lacks mirth. Having seen him stoned before she can state with certainty that he is not acting stoned right now. Even stoned he feels the jangling of anxiety under his skin. That compulsion to act out rituals. Right now he just looks like he's misplaced his last fuck.

Plus the last time she offered to help he panicked and hurt her feelings and she called him an asshole.

"Whatever you wanna do, man," he says and crosses the room to sit down on the mattress. "Either one is alright. It's your dream-..." What'd she call it? "... thing."

Serafíne

Sera reaches up and takes off her glasses then. Slides them from her face onto the crown of her head, where they hold back the mass of her hair. Then a moment later, entirely off.

She tucks them into some hidden pocket of the leather coat, before she takes that off too.

And she's in motion throughout: the glass and the coat and her feet solid on the hardwood floor, crossing to - well - there's no place to sit, so she takes off the coat and slides down the wall to sit cross legged at the head of the mattress. She's done that before: that slide-down-the-wall belongs to late nights and many different kinds of drugs. Sometimes, pineapples are involved. Sometimes, she just starts packing a bag insisting that they go somewhere, anywhere, right fucking now.

Tonight she's almost-sober and the room is bare not because its occupant spends too much time partying to bother furnishing it and she reaches to start unlacing/toeing off her boots as she rests against the wall. Gives him a look if he's still sort-of upright.

"Lay down."

And the way this starts, is: she sings.

Elephant

River

It is twenty-nine degrees outside. There is a light snow. There's a gentle breeze and it's starting to look a lot like an actual winter and not the kind of winter that people from southern California are accustomed to.

If winter is going to happen, they're going to do this right.

River's actually an old pro at setting things on fire in the most mundane of senses. She was the one who was in charge of the camp fire as a kid and she spent good chunks of her formative years burning various and sundry things outside in what she later determined was just what one did when you got cold and were bored and you didn't have an actual stove to cook dinner on. It's just a thing.

There's a ring of stones and pinecone-and-"you're late on the rent" notice kindling and whatever the fuck else one needs to start a fire. Text messages were sent out (recreating the Salem witch trials with marshmallows, want to come hang out?) and bags were set aside.

River took a hit off her flask and put it back in her gigantic purse. Exhales. Watches her breath take to the air. Tosses a sacrificial marshmallow on the pire to appease the camp fire gods.

Grace found out via Samir. Hanging out in the outside when it's below freezing isn't at the top of her list of great things to do, really. It's a good thing she likes Sam.

So she shows up, dressed in two pairs of jeans, her grey zip-up turtleneck on under her coat. Maybe overkill for 29 degrees, but you never know.

"Oh, nice. Fire's already started," she says, and rushes over, pulling her hands out of her pocket and warms herself at the fire.

"How's things?"

Sam Lakhani

Sam has been here for a few minutes by the time Grace arrives. That tendency of his to hemorrhage out of other folks' awareness is a pain in the ass sometimes. If he's going to be hanging out in the park when there's snow and it's colder than Hell then yes. Yes he did bring a bong inside of a backpack onto public transit.

The things he does for River.

He hasn't busted it out of his bag yet but it's sitting on a picnic table bench and unless he has a fully assembled clarinet in that thing there aren't a lot of objects that could drape the canvas like that.

"I told her we should wait until you got here to get it going," he says. Just because he's taken another step towards ascension doesn't mean he's going to stop busting Grace's balls.

Serafíne

Yeah, sure, alright, okay, thanks winter you fucking asshole, it is twenty-nine degrees outside and snowflakes are falling or not so much falling as drifting and drifting is okay too but: cold right? November and we've still forgotten how-to-be-in-the-cold, the things it does to us, body and breath, skin and blood and bone.

She must've forgotten. Little black dress that pretty much covers her ass and not-much-more. Long (the suggestion of length, the illusion of height) legs bare except for ripped fishnets and black heels wrapped in sharp metal studs, leather jacket framed in studs, zips, a marching line of oversized silver safety pins down the center of the back holds the damn coat together and suggests the elegant symmetry of a bare spine. So: not made for warmth any more than anything else she's wearing.

She doesn't seem to notice the cold though, or maybe each minute without shivering is another big fuck you to the cold front shivering flurries down over Denver at the moment.

--

Didn't get a text about a fire. Has: about a bazillion texts she has received and not returned but for god's sake her phone is working again which means every time it buzzes she can slip it out of her pocket and glance down at the screen and feel: alive, connected, earthbound, and strangely free.

--

And she's walking on the arm of a tall guy with blond hair and a trimmed blond beard and she's wearing those heels and he still has several inches on her, but there they are, walking together like old, old friends, this animated discussion back-and-forth between them. Coming from the city, circling the lake like it's a shortcut they know rather than a place-to-stroll.

Ihsan Ghali

Ihsan was sitting nearer to River than anywhere else, with a blanket spread out on the grass beneath them both. She was from Los Angeles-- Southern California. She had been experiencing heat waves and drought for most of the time that she'd been in this country, and she'd spent the majority of her life in Cairo before that.

Ihsan didn't like the flurries because they made her chilled. She'd traveled, she'd experienced cold before, of course. She would just probably never get used to it. So she was bundled up with wool socks under her calf-high black boots, in dark jeans and a black coat. She wore a hat on her head and her hair was out in curls (flat, curling ironed curls) beneath it. No scarf, at least. No gloves either. She was warming herself near the fire, waiting to be able to shed the hat and open the coat.

She was leaned forward, toward the flame, reading some document or another off the screen of her iPhone with an expression of content-but-mild-boredom on her face.

When Grace arrived, Ihsan looked up and smiled fleetingly for a greeting to her. "Hey there, Grace. How are you? Any more murders for me to investigate yet?"

Because who the hell was eavesdropping on them out here, after all?

Kiara

[Spidey senses roll.]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 3, 4, 8, 9) ( success x 2 )

Grace

Grace squints at Ihsan. "No. I heard, finally, that your 'investigation' turned out well in the end, though. Good for you." There's a bit of exasperation in her tone, but she really means that last sentence. It turned out all right, at least.

"Oh, Sam, there you are," she says to him, gives a little wave. Truth be told, she didn't notice his presence until he spoke. Samir is like that, the fucking ghost... She moves over toward him, sitting on the opposite side of the obvious bong. At least there will come some good out of communing with nature or whatever the hell it is they're doing.

Grace can commune with some nature in the form of weed...

Kiara

So, here's the thing.

Kiara Woolfe, daughter of nature and walking manifestation of Spring (or so her presence feels like, so much pulsing, writhing life) actually rather enjoyed the coming of the cooler months. Less for the stagnancy of them, the way the world felt as if it slowed, preparing to enter a chrysalis before re-emerging on the other side of the dripping frost but for the progression of them. It meant change was (should always have been) coming. It meant that despite whatever happenings in the greater scheme - nature was not fooled, or halted.

She would (had to) find a way to survive.

Pattern and purpose to the cycle. An evening like this, after everything she's recently endured, felt cleansing. The air was crisp and flakes of snow are drifting in the air like a promise - landing only to melt in the Verbena's wild dark hair, the waves of which are loose and curling around her shoulders; over the (faux) fur lining of her coat. Hands folded into pockets, dark jeans and boots and that mouth, as ever, painted a brilliant, stark red.

She must have been sent an invitation - or perhaps River simply conjured her with the fire and mention of her ilk via text. Kiara Woolfe, a lean apparition leaning her weight against a tree with her eyes on the fire.

"If you're going to be faithful to the trials, that fire needs to be twice as large." Her voice curls out after a beat. "I could speak in tongues, though." A waspish tease. "To get things rolling."

River

[I totally notice people and resonances. Per+aware]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 5, 7, 9, 10) ( success x 3 )

River

River has planted herself near Ihsan and, on occasion, gets up to poke the fire and check to make sure said sacrificial marshmallow knows it is in a place of honor- you must burn so that others after you may be delicious. Thus far, she's been pretty happy to just be around people, hair shoved under a hat and her coat isn't pretty but god damn it, it looks like the kind of thing that you would wear if you're going to go out and wander aimlessly through the wilderness.

Laughs when Sam pokes at Grace. Tries to laugh a little less at the bits of exasperation in her tone when Ihsan mentions wanting another murder investigation to paw through.

Then? Kiara is there- someone River hasn't seen in awhile and she waves- fingers uncovered but the rest of her hands seem pretty well shielded from the weather in what can only be described as mittens having an identity crisis.

"I tried to come up with something witty to say to that, but I've drawn a blank," she offers, laughs anyway, "nothing makes marshmallows tastier than the gross misappropriation of justice?"

And, with that, she offers Kiara a coat hanger.

Sam Lakhani

It's too cold for him to even think about sitting down. He may or may not have thermals on underneath his street clothes. He has swapped out the leather jacket for a peacoat and has a ski cap tugged over his hair. His fingerless gloves have a mitten-type option in the form of flaps. It's difficult to strike a lighter when you can't feel your fingers but it's even harder with wool covering your thumb.

"You should," he says to Kiara regarding using glossolalia. "Speaking in tongues is metal."

Ihsan Ghali

"Thank you," Ihsan answered Grace's congratulations in working with River and Mike to bring down the Nephandus that had been melding people into two and triggering a murdering spree from someone entirely different, in a surprise twist ending. She smiled and seemed pretty genuinely pleased with herself, then skewered a marshmallow and put it outside the reach of the fire to toast slowly.

Where this bundle of Mages sat must have felt like a goddamn magnet to other magical forces out there. That many rifts in the hard laws of "reality" would make some waves for sure. It was astounding that they hadn't brought trouble down upon their heads already (knock on wood).

Ihsan pulled her hat from her head and smoothed her hair with her palms, then unzipped her coat some to show the top of a charcoal colored shirt. The fire was warming her and the boots and wool socks were starting to feel pleasantly toasty.

Like the marshmallow.

River

"I thought I was speaking in tongues once, but then it turns out I apparently knew Sanskrit at one point," she said with a shrug, as though this is a completely... no, she knows this is not a normal thing for people but she passes it off like oh, yeah, sometimes you just remember crap from a past life and have no idea why you know how to do something. Just roll with it, NBD. Sigh. Chakravanti problems.

Grace

"I thought yelling while you're simultaneously trying to clear your throat was metal. The things I learn..."

Yes, this many Mages might be a goddamn magnet. If so, let them come. There must be a few more royally stupid things out there who'd like to shove shadows down her throat or something. They could have an actual burning. Fun for the whole family.

Well, okay. Maybe not fun.

She laughs at River, thinking that's a joke she just made. Who doesn't know jack shit about past lives? This Elite.

"Hey, Kiara."

Kiara

The Verbena is still standing off a ways when River holds out that coat hanger, her lip curled up at the edge in a smile that verged on a few things but her eyes: they seemed wholly honed in on her. Watching River with a sudden, total, focus as if by staring long enough she'd be able to tease loose a beat on the other female's mental state.

This is the first time Kiara Woolfe has seen her since news came of Farrah's demise.

It's there, somewhere, in that look and the slow, stretching beat of silence - on the tip of her tongue, to say something of it. A heavy awareness lingers as the brunette eventually kicks off her leaning point and moves into the gathering proper. Ihsan receives a lingering tick of Kiara's eyes as she makes progress and comes close enough to receive the coat hanger.

"Thanks." She accepts it with, and studies River's face again, the firelight drawing gold patterns over the Verbena's neck. The warmth melting snowflakes in her hair. Then there's Samir - and there's Grace and the latter gets a quick, bright smile, but the former -

The regard lingers there.

"I'll keep it mind for a party trick later." She looks at Samir for another moment, then drops down to her haunches and her eyes return to Ihsan. "I don't believe we've had the pleasure yet."

Kiara

[Ahem. "keep it in mind," tyvm typo.]

Sam Lakhani

Just about any other person looking at him the way Kiara looks at him would normally have him wondering what the hell she was staring at. But Kiara is Verbena and he knows what she's staring at besides. His resonance is noticeable now. He is more of a presence than he was the last time they saw each other.

Granted the fact that she is Verbena means she could be staring at a pissed-off spirit hovering behind him or a blight on his aura or something and he wouldn't know until she said something but Sam has a pretty good idea what has her attention.

He throws up a set of rock horns with the hand not holding onto the backpack and drops into a crouch by the Chakravanti as Ihsan and Kiara get themselves acquainted. Time to light this sucker.

Ihsan Ghali

"No," said the North African woman to Kiara. She'd watched the woman as people answered to speaking in tongues-- how it was metal and could be confused for Sanskrit. Ihsan was busy regarding the new dark-haired woman with the bright red lips. Watching her like a lion-- relaxed and assured but watchful none the less.

"I am Ihsan." She smiled and lifted her hand to show her palm in greeting. Hey, that kind of a wave said. Her accent was dense and interesting, different to an ear that's grown accustomed to the Western United States especially. Still, she spoke clearly and had a strong grasp of the English language. She wasn't that difficult to understand.

The marshmallow was brought back and tested with a squeeze of her fingers. It was a little underdone, but apparently that was how she liked them, for she plucked it with her fingers and popped it whole into her mouth. She then pulled her hat back on and zipped her coat back up and rose to her feet.

"I'm going back to make a run to the store for hot dogs and buns. Anyone wanna come with me?"

And whoever did or did not want to come with, so it would be. Ihsan was set on getting hot dogs and returning later with brats instead ("yes, hot dogs, right?").

[Sorry, but I need to roll out early. Bedtime comes quick when your alarm is set for 4:30am]

Grace

Oh, nice, Sam. Abandon Grace over there. Whatever. She looks over at Sam and River and gives him a little smirk.

Well, she knows how it is.

She turns her hands back and forth to the side of the fire, trying to warm the cold side (which is, of course, the side not nearest the fire at that second).

"Hot dogs too? Awesome," she says to Ihsan, but doesn't move to get up. Not going with.

River

She has good days, and she has bad days. There isn't much of a baseline for Kiara to work off of but today? Today seems like a good day. She seems alert and engaged and content to be aware of people. She hasn't punched anyone at work (in fact, she still has a job. The other dancers at the Diamond Cabaret are convinced she must be sleeping with the hiring manager, but realistically River came up in a couple of very positive Yelp reviews. She's a classy lady; classy ladies change the atmosphere enough that you attract clientel who spend more.)

River concludes that Samir is close enough to lean on for a minute, and so she does- it's a momentary breach of space until she realizes oh fuck, Samir is lighting stuff and she stops attempting to assert her manifest destiny on his space.

There is, however, something that stuck on her senses. Brows knit for a second as she remembers that there's a presence that she can't actually place. Though, in the way, she does happen to place its source and finds-

"I'm gonna yell at people," she warns. And then, does raise her voice enough that it carries-

"Dan! Tenemos malvaviscos! Come say hi!"

Sam Lakhani

Living in a trailer by himself in the middle of goddamn nowhere must be doing him some good. A few months ago River would not have leaned on Sam. A slew of variables make today a different day than one plucked random from several months back. He doesn't seem like an individual who would react strong to unprovoked physical contact.

Ihsan takes off to go buy hot dogs and Sam doesn't offer to go with her but he does hand her a twenty out of his billfold before she leaves. Then River is leaning on him and he goes still a moment with the novelty of it. But then she pulls away again and he goes back to packing the bowl.

I'm gonna yell at people.

"Uh oh," he says before he plants the bong in the dirt and covers his ears with his gloves.

Kiara

I am Ihsan.

That ignites a flicker of recognition. Apparently, the name meant something to the brunette and she returns the greeting with little nod. An affirmative sort of gesture. Kiara's eyes follow the other woman when she rises to her feet and makes her declaration of a store run. The coat hanger is still being held between Kiara's fingertips, her nails are painted the same shade of red as her lips.

The firelight reflects in the varnish as she twists the wire hanger around in her grasp.

It's a habit, perhaps, watching other people. It's certainly one that the brunette seems to be making an attempt at, the way her dark eyes follow Ihsan and then return to Samir long enough to catch the gesture he makes, long enough to witness the way he positions himself by River.

The way she leans into his space.

The Verbena's gaze drops away, then. This brief constriction of her brows and she drives the edge of the hanger into the hardening earth below, wedging it there as she rises to her feet. Drawing the hood of her coat up so her features all but vanish beneath the furred lining. "I'm going to make a quick circuit for more kindling. There's bound to be some leaves around here.

I'll be right back."

Hard to tell what the pagan's expression is in the moment before she starts moving again, leaning over periodically to kick up leaves being buried by drifts of snow. Shaking loose the less saturated ones.

Of course she's caught by the wild tangle of resonance surrounding the slow-growing (probably illegal but hey: world of darkness) campfire down by the lake and of course she stops, hooked (fish hook/open eye) right? and sometimes it makes her want to breathe: in and in and in and in like she could inhale the world, feel it bubbling in her lungs. Tonight, instead, she feels skewered like those marshmallows on that coathanger and that hook is an odd little interregnum in their coming-from-someplace and going-to-someplace, an arrest, if you will, an institial moment that feels quite as between-things (places, deeds, names, definitions) as she does.

It's a long-ass walk cutting through the park and the sun has set and the sky has that pillowed, shifting, dead-orange tinge from all the ugly lights reflecting off the close-cropped clouds, the fitful swirls of snow and in the midst of that walk is an exchange between them, all statement and query. Her statement; his query evidence in the way he pauses and glances down at her, face on to her profile, sharp against the darkness. Maybe it is that turn of his head that catches River's attention. The beard and hint of tattoos on his ungloved hands. Some lumpen shadow at his back that will resolve itself into a guitar case when he gets closer.

Which he will soon.

Because: River warns that she is gonna yell at people and then she yells at people and Dan lifts a hand by way of greeting (open palm, mildly ironic twist of his mouth) because what else can he do? Drops his mouth to her ear and bumps his forehead against her temple as he does so: so familiar, so close, so careful with her right now.

--

Takes them longer than you might think when they leave the path. Four inches of melting slush on muddy ground that has not yet been settled into a solid winter freeze and, you know, heels and bare legs do not mix very well but whatever. She's solid on those long legs. Knows how to walk on almost any surface in those heels, but here and there, he gives her a hand.

"Hey folks," Dan, when he gets there. Just a glance and a flash of his palm, as his attention returns to the girl-who-yelled, his mouth curves wider. "River." And his attention hangs there for a lingering beat. "I don't think you've met Sera, have you?"

Grace

"Hey, Dan," Grace says, through the fire's heat. He's a wavy-lined Dan to her. "Hey, Sera."

She smiles with her eyes at the newcomers to the circle of fire, but then returns her attention to the flames.

"You going to play for us?" she asks the fire. Obviously it's more for Dan than anyone, but who knows. Maybe she really does mean to ask the fire.

Sam Lakhani

Last time Sam saw Sera and Dan he was in Quiet. Which means the last time he actually remembers seeing them was at a house party. Which means he was stoned when he showed up and not in much better shape when he left around three o'clock in the morning.

Something in Kiara's gaze has him checking his own expression. He lowers his hands after River has yelled about marshmallows to the Cultist and her consor and lifts one to wave but it's an awkward sort of wave. A not-knowing-how-to-act-in-this-situation wave.

The bong is packed and ready to go. He is not the first one to light it. It sits like an offering beside the fire and then Sam stands from his crouch and takes a few steps back from the circle to light a cigarette.

River

"I have not," she carries things like she is used to carrying things because, well, this is just another social situation and River is a social creature. Sees a man with a guitar and his friend who is a spindly but striking creature.

She offers them a coat hanger, like this was a worthwhile offering.

"I told everybody that we were reenacting the Salem with trials with marshmallows, but I don't actually know how to hang a marshmallow so, uh, morbid joke completely lost."

Kiara

She does, in fact, return after a while with a handful of leaves cupped in her hands (trust the earth witch to deliver on such a promise) and carries them dutifully to the small fire; dropping them in a drift of crumbling pieces into the flames where they are greedily consumed and send up the vague, earthy aroma of foliage as it crackles and curls in on itself.

She's brushing her hands off when Dan and Sera make their approach and the Verbana's dark eyes, dramatized more-so by the liner she's applied to them turn to regard both, her hood pushed back far enough now that strands of dark hair are visible where they slither and curl at her neck, the thick waves of it half tamed by her coat.

"Good to see you, Dan. Sera." The latter's name offered with this quiet, delicate touch of meaning. The Verbena's supple mouth pulled into a little half-curl. She tosses the last handful of leaves toward the fire and and nudges at a stray, escaping one with a boot. Urging toward its demise.

A flicker of some darker, answering humor dawns in the Verbena's eyes as she watches the flames. "Burning them alive has always been a crowd favorite." There's this tiny shadow that falls over Kiara's face as she turns it into the treeline, as if searching for the source of a noise.

"Or so I've heard."

Serafíne

"Hey Grace," Dan-to-Grace, through the flames. This quirk, like a smile but checked a bit, framed by the beard. "We could, if you wanted. Couple songs, maybe. We've got a gig though, so we can't stay too long. Sort of a welcome-back thing for Sera, so it'd be pretty shitty if we didn't show. Any requests?"

--

Dan didn't see Sam when Sam was in Quiet. He was waiting in the van, engine off but still ticking in the heat of the day. Watched her leave and come back and knew something was hanging over her when she climbed back in the passenger door. Didn't know how bad it was until she collapsed. Took him forever to scrub the blood out of the upholstery, but he managed it.

Dan gives Sam the self-same quirk-of-a-smile-thing that Grace received and there's nothing awkward about it. Something: prompting, quiet, solicitous in the way he handles Sera in the moment though, cutting a lashed glance down at her profile.

"River this is Sera. Sera, River. So, now you've met."

Sera takes in this: bright, crisp inhale then. "Hey." And it is all very, strangely self-contained, though River has no real context for this, but maybe she's simply: stoned, already, somehow. When Kiara returns with her promised leaves, something a little more animate: warm, less constrained gets woven into her name, "Kiara."

"What about you, River. Any requests?"

That's Dan, he seems to think music is necessary right now and he's letting go of Sera long enough to lift the guitar case over his head and shoulders.

Sam Lakhani

As he traipses further from the fire he puts his back to it and the people around it. He meets Grace's gaze quick and continues his traipsing. They're all sitting around a fire that is giving off a good amount of heat and no small amount of smoke but he wants to keep his carcinogens to himself. What a guy.

He ends up over by Grace again anyway. She's the furthest away from the fire and she's sitting down and he's taller than her when she's standing up.

"You see that thing on Jitbit," he asks, "about the guy who would write cron-jobs for anything that took him more than ninety seconds?"

Grace

"Uhhh. No? Sorry. I'm terrible at music-y things," she says. "Something you like."

Her favorite 'song' at the moment is a guy screaming at people to install Gentoo over a throbbing beat, and there's no guitars in it. And if there were, you couldn't play it without a computer.

Samir saves her by talking nerdy at her. "Nope. Sounds fun though."

River

"Ukelele anthem!" because something with four chords was totally worth Dan's prowess as a musician. She has managed to piece together though that the bearded man is to music what she is to dancing.

River has made her way over to the communal bong, started on with the necessary prep work because she has no problems being the first person to take a hit for the evening.

"I have full intention of getting ripped and asking people to dance, so- does that inform your decision?"

Sam Lakhani

"You need to get a coffee maker with an SSHD. Then you could figure out how long it takes you to walk from the library to the kitchen and, like, have it start brewing and then wait before pouring it into a cup. The guy called it fuckingcoffee.sh or something equally poetic."

It's way colder over here than it is by the fire what the fuck Grace. He finds it difficult to bitch about the cold after the other night though so he digs his smartphone out of his jeans pocket and starts tapping buttons.

"Hang on, I'll send it to you."

Kiara

She moves a little closer to the Cultist, Kiara, her hands finding her coat pockets.

It's a dark navy form fitted thing that hugs in around her narrow waist with a zip and a hood that's lined with a mottled fur trim along the edges and sleeve-ends. The lining was synthetic but it cast the brunette with that twinge of something a little wilder none the less - something she seemed to be manifesting tonight. A certain aloofness in the way she held herself away from the others.

Standing rather than sitting as if her presence were as limited as the two en route to a gig.

She's watching the fire again, the pagan and there's something to that, the way the flames licking and curling into the air, the smoke and the tiny snaps and pops of burning debris, contain and hold her focus. They spoke enough of the Spirit Mages to allow for some assumptions to be made regarding the distraction of the Verbena. Perhaps she was meditating on the way the fire feels to her or senses some fluctuation in the Park itself.

It's the stillness, though. That makes it singular. Her eyes don't leave the fire to comment wryly: "As long as it's not Kumbaya."

"Couldn't even begin to compete with Amanda Palmer." Dan tosses back to River with another supple, subtle expression rising to the surface and sinking back beneath. "Plus I misplaced my goddamned ukelele somewhere between Raleigh and Denver - "

" - you left it in fucking Macon," Sera interrupts and Dan isn't expecting that and he cuts a sort of searching glance back down at her face and she's giving him a mildly pointed smirk that subsides as quickly as it arose in the first place, dark eyes cutting away from him. Lingering on Kiara as the Verbena circles the fire and starts watching the flames: that singular stillness.

"Apparently I left it in Macon, which isn't between Raleigh and Denver at all. Point is: never replaced. Closest I have is a mandolin and that's back at the house. How about a country song, since we've got a bonfire. Ever heard of Jason Isbell?"

Grace

Grace pulls out her own phone, and now -- true to stereotype -- the two Mercurial Elites of the party are staring into their phones in the great outdoors, communicating to each other with them while the rest get all sociable.

And it's about a shell script named fuckingcoffee.sh.

It is fucking hilarious though, and has Grace laughing at her phone. "Ohh, man. Kumar-asshole.sh. Lol," she says. And yes, she actually says the word lol as if it were one. In-jokes are a thing over here.

"He had a cron job for hangover excuses. I think I want to try that. Not that I need to call in at work, hah."

Sam Lakhani

By the time Grace receives the link Sam has moved onto other things. On his phone. They are living the dream over there.

"Yeah but still. You see the words 'vampire' or 'Washington Park' or 'police' on Ginger, you can just have that bad boy fire off and not have to deal with it."

He's joking. Hangovers aren't an excuse when you're BFF with a Verbena.

Kiara

There's clearly something on Kiara's mind. A certain ... it feels like the lingering aftermath of something. An emotional bruising she's nursing. Some unspoken trauma. There's almost an edge of something sharp and dismissive in the things she says tonight. The humor is there as always but it's flavored with a sort of punctuation.

She looks as if she's deliberating on whether or not to stay. And as if looking into the campfire is soothing to her, for whatever the reason. Unsettled, edgy. The impression that Sera is getting from Kiara Woolfe right now is that whatever is on her mind, distracting her, provoking a sharper tongue - it's not anything she wants to discuss.

At least, not here. Not with the gathered.

River

She's holding her breath while he's talking, nods. Pays attention because, no, one can't compete with Amanda Fucking Palmer. No, she has not heard of Jason Isbell and eventually she exhales. It's a long, slow breath like meditation because why the fuck shouldn't getting stoned be like meditation?

"We lived outside of Macon for two months during peach season," River clarifies, "you would think that I would have picked up something about country music in Georgia but it was all Willie Nelson."

Which is weirdly appropriate.

"So, you guys are in the same band?"

Grace

Grace snorts. "Yeah, that's what I need. A 'Handle Emergency' cron job. Just fire it off, and it will do everything that takes more than ninety seconds."

Which, you know, includes taking care of whatever the latest thing to happen in Washington Park is.

"I have never heard of Jason Isbell," she says, into her phone. If anyone were thinking she wasn't paying any attention...

Serafíne

"Willie Nelson is kind of a badass," Dan tosses back to River as she is getting high. "He did this cover of Pancho and Left that is one of the most perfect things on the planet. If that's what you took away from two months in Georgia outside of Macon, you could've done alot worse."

--

There's work to be done. Like, you know: tuning. The overtones of fingers-on-strings, that strange, patterned language, the internal tones as he listens to the acoustic he was carrying-through-the-park and it should've been an electric but: maybe magick? There's a fire and no outlets and Sera doesn't even really quite understand that she knows Forces magick and she has been capable of it for two fucking years.

"Afterparty at my place," this to Kiara. Supple, subtle thing, the invitation a coil of smoke from the strangely-reserved creature. (Maybe: to River she will always be like this: first.) " - when the bar closes. Two, two-thirty? You should stop by."

"Yeah, we're in the same band." Dan, to River. "Don't usually do country but he's a killer songwriter and we always have a few off-the-wall covers up our sleeves." Glances sidelong at Sera. "Elephant, then Super 8?"

"Fuck, Dan, that's like tearing someone's heart out, shredding it, then smoking a bowl of the remnants, getting so stoned you wander into traffic and figure out how to make the stars shut down."

He favors her with a quick, quiet smirk. Likes that spark of animation in her eyes and voice.

"Used to be with this band called the Drive-By Truckers," Dan-the-hipster tells Grace. "It's more alt-country than country. He doesn't sing about how sexy girls are when they hang out in trucks or how fun it is to hang out in trucks and get drunk in corn fields so he's probably not gonna get on commercial country radio."

Sam Lakhani

"You do. You need this so hard."

Break from reality over. Sam shoves the phone back into his pocket and wanders back over to the fire. That's where he left the bong and his backpack anyway. When he comes to stand beside River it's almost as if by coincidence. It's easy to forget he exists when he isn't talking.

"Hit me," he says and holds his hand out for the bong.

Kiara

It's been lightly snowing tonight, as if the weather hadn't quite settled on what it desired but the drifts of it come down, every so often. Can't penetrate far where the fire is of course, melt before they're close to that emanating source of heat but they find placement in hair, on sleeves. Kiss the edge of cheeks and it's after one of these finds Kiara's that her fingers emerge from her pockets and she sweeps a hand up.

Suddenly alert to the surroundings, tipping her chin up to stare up at the dark skies, at the clusters of trees. Touching her face as if she'd forgotten, momentarily, where the source was of the sudden dampness on her face.

She brushes it aside and turns her face, just slightly, at Grace and Samir's conversation. Her attention captured by the mention of vampires, by Ginger and Washington Park and handling situations. The Verbena's eyes drop away and she bends down to find a leaf, lashed to the side of her boot, pasted there by the snow. Squats there and peels it off, carefully uncurling the edges.

"They're amazing. You should hear them play a gig sometime." This, almost absently to River at her question as the Verbena twists the leaf around, sets it open on her palm and curls her fingers around it. Finds the other woman's gaze through the flames. Holds there a beat.

Pulls up, opens her fingers and crumbles up the leaf, smears it over the flames. Glances at Serafine as she offers an after-party at Corona Street. "Yeah." Those red lips quirk, give over to one of her smiles, the pagan. Flash of teeth. Curl at the corner that makes it that side of crooked.

"I'd like that." She doesn't offer more, say they should talk. Just - studies Serafine's face for a moment as if committing it to memory and then returns her eyes to the campfire.

Grace

Grace follows Sam, her face still stuck in her phone though. Light from the phone paints her face with blue, battling it out with the fire.

Well, maybe she won't be their chaperone or anything. Grace just wants a hit.

"I don't even know a thing about commercial country radio. Girls hanging out in trucks?" she shrugs. Whatever, to that.

River

"I'm not a pretty crier," she tells Dan and his cultist-friend, "Sam and Grace can attest."

And it's true. though she isn't sure if Grace has seen her cry from underneath the mountain of blankets beyond the little giggling whimpter of a happy ending amidst the zombie apocalypse. River is pretty committed to her makeup staying on tonight, though, because it's cold and her face can feel it and somehow being freezing bakes on your foundation.

She's standing, has the bong in hand and hands it off to him like this is some sacred rite- like this was the passing of the Olympic torch instead of, you know, just hanging a guy a bong and calling it good.

"And hanging out of trucks and getting drunk in corn fields is fun if you can find a cornfield... does colorado have corn fields?"

Bonus points if it's not your corn field.

Serafíne

Sera isn't wrong about that pairing of songs and Dan needs space to move to play and she steps away from him, careful in her ridiculous goddamned heels but god she can move in them, even on the spongy, half-frozen ground.

The cold, the goddamned snow mean that Dan's bare fingers are stiff as they skim over the strings but he pulls the first evocative chords out of the instrument and there is something quite remarkably intimate about the way they balance each other; about the way they watch each other, rhythmic, familiar. This point where she takes in a breath like she's about to join him, but no, and he just repeats those opening bars, eyes on her face, the dance of reflected light in her eyes.

Elephant starts off all-quiet, reflective, nostalgic, but you get pretty early that the song's as close to a requiem as you can get for someone still alive. Unsentimental, ("If I'd fucked her before she got sick / I'd never heard the end of it") clear-eyed - goddamned sad. Sera sings it alternately watching Dan's hangs and staring into the fire and when her voice is supposed to soar, goddamned, it soars -

We'd burn these joints in effigy,
cry about what we used to be,
and try to ignore the elephant somehow.

I buried her a thousand times,
giving up my place in line,
but I don't give a damn about that now.

--

River is committed to keeping her make-up intact tonight but by the end of that there are tears in Sera's eyes and on her cheeks, and both her mascara and her eyeliner are waterproof but there's the eyeshadow too, which isn't. Maybe it just adds to her rock-star vibe and there's no time to dwell on the chord that strikes up in her or how deeply and feelingly she sings or whatever is happening in her or anyone else because: Super 8's a honky-tonk barn-burner and yes, River, you can dance to it. You could probably take off all your clothes to it, and there's not enough time to catch your breath between them:

Having such a sweet night
Audience is just right
Drinking like a pirate do
Don’t want to sleep yet
Buddy it’s a good bet
I’ll raise more hell than you -

And the song keeps going. There's paramedics, pedialyte, and maybe a defibrillator. Haven't we all had nights like that?

So, yeah. That's the impromptu concert. When it's wrapping up, Sera-and-Dan aren't hanging around for hits from the bong, they're packing up. Have somewhere to be: and soon.

River

[I'm totally good. Manip+sub]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (4, 5, 7, 7, 10) ( success x 3 )

River

She's a good audience member, though halfway through the first song she determines that she's going to need a second hit. There's silence, because she knows it isn't polite to applaud but eventually she does because it was really fucking good and she can appreciate a good performance regardless of the responses that it provokes out of her.

"Go have fun!" is what she says out of haze, eyes back to the fire for a moment.

Kiara

[Per + Empathy on River: is she?]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 2, 3, 4, 6) ( success x 1 )

Kiara

Music has that way about it, of course. Good music can lift you. Inspire you. Tear you to pieces with nothing more impressive than the slow build of a guitar, a note sculpted and held. The Verbena's been witness to Serafine and Dan performing before - she knows they're that good.

She'd said about as much to River, only moments before.

Music has that way and at some point during the first song the Verbena's dark eyes place River's face again and she watches it; watches the way the firelight plays over it. Watches her the way she had when she first turned up, leaning against that tree in the shadows as if she were an interloper rather than one of the invited.

Whatever Kiara Woolfe does or doesn't see it takes until the end of the song for her to look down, to tip her chin down and draw her hood back up and bury her hands deep into her pockets. She's not inscrutable, the healer. Not accustomed to trying to be, to concealing whatever thoughts or feelings skim across her face.

She's only beginning to understand the ways she can protect her own mind from infiltration.

So maybe there's that glimpse before she draws it up, after she drags her eyes from River's face, where that's clear. What the music does to her. How it presses down on that bruise she's wearing, however deep it runs, however she's attempting to disguise it. A twist across her mouth, a haunted quality to fine dark eyes.

She stands there, hood drawn while the second number happens. That stillness settling back in. She doesn't applaud at the end of it but she does draw her hands out of her pockets, does move to press a hand against the Cultist's shoulder as she makes some bid for departure might not even understand how to articulate.

"You sounded great." She affirms and there's this brief glance back at the gathered. "I've gotta go guys. I'll catch you later."

Serafíne

Per + Empathy, River.

Dice: 7 d10 TN5 (2, 3, 3, 3, 5, 6, 10) ( success x 4 ) [Doubling Tens]

River

"See ya," she says. Smiles and gives a wave and she seems fine. She seems fine and of course she is fine, because River has never given any indication that she is not anything other than fine, even when she has to turn off large portions of her brain to keep up the ruse. She is committed, you see. She is committed to any number of things, but right now she is committed to the idea that she is not going to be emotionally wrought over the fact that there was a song that moved her in such a fashion that she's waxing close to nostalgic.

She wears it well, that denial. She wears it like it's a shield and she carries a sword and in some other life she was some brave gladiator. still is.

she'll process later.

"Graaaaace," she says, offers her a hand, "do you know how to tango?"

Grace

Grace gives River a squinty-eyed look, and then makes a grab at the bong. Tango? The fuck, River. Going to break the poor woman. She takes a hit, holds it, lets out a smokey, creaky "No."

But still, she adjusts herself, hands the bong over to Sam, and stands rather stiffly as she holds her arms out -- one of them positioned like it might hold on to somebody, the other in the air above her head like it might be holding another's hand.

She's never really cared about looking ridiculous, Grace.

"Show me?"

River

River looks at Grace and the look on her face can only be described as delight. She steps in, holds her up arms and preens like she's an instructor because, at her core, she can be an instructor of sorts. She's a good enough that she doesn't seem to have a problem.

She beams.

Moves her arms down a little.

"This is probably going to come up again with me. Just for reference."

Serafíne

"Stop by later, yeah?" Sera to Kiara, as Dan is packing up the guitar. A longer glance at River, then, sharper. This almost bruising awareness about her that gets honed in that moment until it gleams, and that's what she was made to be right there, bright, aching, in the moment. A hitch of awareness that hooks, catches, dissipates.
Lovely as the edge of an ever-elusive rainbow.

--

Had she been aware of recent history, she might not have chosen that song. She wasn't. Isn't. Couldn't've gotten on Ginger if she'd wanted to: her phone didn't fucking work. Dan checks it anyway and he couldn't see her, and he kept it up but mostly he was looking for anything from anyone about her. No dice.

All of that etches the air around them. Frames out both the intimacy of their interactions and that strange reserve that Sera breaks out of only in these odd flashes of awareness.

--

"You should drop by too."

And she could be saying that to anyone or everyone, but she's not. Mostly, she means River. Unspoken in there: no more sad songs tonight. "The Edgefield."

And off they go.

The One Where Sera Rewinds Time

Grace

[Previous posts, for reference!]

Grace

It's been a shitty few days. But for someone else in the place, it's been a whole lot shittier.

Grace doesn't understand Quiet. She's never been through it, never seen anyone go through it. The closest she's come has been suffering from a Technocratic virus meant to torture its victims as much as possible through hallucinatory horror. So she has sympathy when Samir takes apart his bed or spends the day cleaning furiously. She's always there with food, cutting through his bullshit to make him eat. Thinks this might have been something the monster did to him.

She couldn't really leave the office the day before yesterday. He was more out of it than usual, and somebody had to make sure he wouldn't bolt out and start wandering the streets again, muttering about that woman who tried to put government mind-control agents in his food.

Not that he'd get too far, because Grace hasn't yet shut down her monitoring program.

Yesterday, though, he wouldn't eat. Wouldn't do anything. His little red dot on her map of Denver didn't move.

Today, the dot is on the move again. And Grace is on her phone in the kitchen, calling Sera. The only time he's been halfway coherent was after she helped him get there.

Sera, your phone is ringing.

Serafíne

The creature sounds - well - sleepy when she answers. Like she was drowsing on a blanket spread out beneath the late summer sun, or maybe - just maybe - rolling over amidst the rich tangle of her fluffy white duvet and crisp sheets. This lazy, back-of-her-throat sound as her mouth more-or-less finds the right spot on her iPhone for talking. That's all luck.

"Grace. 'Sup?

Grace

"Hey, Sera. It's about Samir -- I don't know if you know him? The guy from the... a few days ago? Things aren't really improving," she says, glancing at the plate she made up with all of Samir's favorites.

"He's not eating. Or drinking. I really don't want to take him to the hospital, but eventually, you know, people get dehydrated... I don't really know what to do."

She's avoiding saying all the reasons he's giving for not eating. And of course, she doesn't want to take him to the hospital for Reasons. That's not even close to an option.

"He seemed to do better with you."

Because, you know, you have that magic touch, there, Sera.

Serafíne

"Mmmph."

Something something in the background. Music. A window rattling open, perhaps, the assertion of exterior noise, the hum of some insistent insect. The world is so alive, and beneath it this susurrant huskhuskhusk. That's the comforter, trailing along the floor behind her. Unwinding.

"Where are you?" Then: "Where's that?"

And then:

"Okay. Be there soon."

--

A half-hour, maybe forty-five minutes later, a van pulls up to a certain address in another section of town. The passenger's door opens, and rather spare young woman in a short pink sundress covered in bumble bees. Thigh-high fishnets held up by visible garters encase her legs, right down to her well-worn black combat boots. Damp curls fragrant around her shoulders, a thermos full of whiskey-spiked Darjeeling in hand, she hangs out long enough for her companion - tall, blond, beared, lanky - to park and circle the van and come up alongside her.

Together, they head toward the closest door-like thing they see.

Grace

[Awareness! Can we sense the approach of a Sera?]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (1, 2, 5, 8, 10) ( success x 2 )

Grace

Grace lets Sera know the address -- a place West of Denver proper, on the outskirts of town.

The Warehouse sits beside the Office, a two-story building. Neither look like much from the outside, which is probably the point. A horribly faded image of a cow decorates the side of the Warehouse, which might lead one to believe that this place was attached to a dairy business at one point. It is not, anymore. For one thing, dairies don't generally have need for such thick doors, with what appear to be biometric locks.

Grace is expecting visitors, and she can feel the mesmerizing presence of Sera filtering in through all the other resonant signatures here. It doesn't take her long to appear at the door to the Office, opening it with a crunching noise.

"Hey, Sera. Dan," she says, keeps the door open for them -- but not too much. Persimmon, one of Kalen's Bengal cats is eyeing the door like it is a portal into a strange new world.

Serafíne

The door opens. There they are, the pair of them. Sera has her head tipped back - gleaming sunglasses obscure her eyes - but she is sort of looking over the frames at Dan, who has a tattooed hand on her shoulder and is laughing, or maybe smirking, just a bit at something Our Sera said.

He glances up, inhales as the door opens, and - nah. Doesn't say anything except, "Grace," which serves as a stand-in greeting for the two of them because Sera kinda waves her thermos of tea.

In through the door and they are both looking around because the place is so - well - unusual and the technological locks honestly kinda freak Sera out so good thing she doesn't really notice-notice them.

"Interesting place," Dan to Grace, as he steps in behind Sera. "Kinda feel like I'm entering the lair of a Bond villain. Or at least the movie-set of the lair of a Bond villain."

Sera, for her part, lofts one of her straight dark brows over the rim of her oversized glasses. Fixes them on Dan, briefly, then back at Grace. "Where is he?"

Samir, she means. Of course.

Samir

Yesterday the dot had no more energy than a slug. Even a slug is possessed of a sense of self-preservation. All living creatures have within them such a drive but Samir is trapped in a reality that doesn't match the reality his friends know. The other day Sam was able to claw his way back to some semblance of sanity. He isn't having wild visual hallucinations or hearing so much noise that he can't concentrate anymore but Sam doesn't know how long he's going to be like this. Quiet doesn't come with an instruction manual.

Today Sam is tired. Call it a bout of despair. His only options are to fight off the madness for a few hours and be incapable of doing so much as hauling himself out of bed for the rest of the next day or to lock himself in his room so Grace doesn't keep trying to get him to ingest whatever mind-control substance the government or the Technocracy maybe it's the Technocracy maybe it's some other entity he hasn't thought of yet but the voices are angry with him and if they can't get him to do what they want him to do one way they'll find another.

So he went with Option B.

The dot is upright and active. Thus far it hasn't moved from its place on Grace's map of Denver.

Grace

"The Bond villain's totally Kalen," Grace says, nods at him. Inside the place, it looks (and feels) more like a Hermetic's lair, with the resonance of Kalen and Elijah seeped into the pores of the wood. Kalen likes his interiors beautiful and decorated, with deep, jewel-tones on the walls, and paintings, maps, objects plenty. If Sera ever makes it to the library, she will find a rather large marble lion statue -- it is that kind of place.

"He has locked himself in his room. I'll show you," she says to Sera's question, and turns to go up the stairs.

Serafíne

So, jewel tones, paintings, rich warm woods, libraries with enormous marbles statues hidden away behind a concrete facade with a fading dancing cow, thick doors and biometric locks.

Definitely Bond villain. The vibe only deepens the further they get inside.

Dan gives Grace a quick little - something. Grin? Grimace? Something between? through the beard and falls into step behind Sera as they head up the stairs. She's being pretty quiet, keeps pace, doesn't take off the sunglasses, makes all the turns and follows all the paths.

Upstairs, the hallway: "You have a key right?" Sera, quiet. "Lock-picking's not exactly one of my skills."

Grace

Grace looks like she's just coming to think of the idea of a key. Of course, Sera needs to get in. Samir's locked the door. That all makes sense. Part of the reason why she gave Samir a room that locked in the first place was to give him a sense of security. That's going to get violated now, isn't it?

"Key. Right. I do, hold on..." she says, and darts down the hallway, slipping her finger on a fingerprint-reader, which opens the vault-like door to her own office. The Bond villain vibe does not decrease. At all.

Soon, though, she's returning with a keyring of note. There's keys to their servers, to the freeze-dried goods larder, to the gun range, to a few other offices -- and Samir's room. She holds out the right one to Sera.

"I don't think he'll want me to be the one opening that door. He's been... unhappy with me today I think."

Samir

Oh good. Voices out in the hallway. Just what a guy who's already having auditory hallucinations and delusions concerning the intentions of the person who's been providing him with shelter wants to hear in a moment like this.

The door is already locked. On their side the girls can hear a rustling and then a very near thumping. (The audience can see Sam flying up from where he'd been sitting on the floor and grabbing a computer chair and then wedging it underneath the doorknob.)
He's breathing fast. He's scared.

Grace wasn't taking I'm not hungry for an answer earlier. They must have gotten to her already. He doesn't know who's with her and he doesn't particularly want to find out either.

Serafíne

"It's really good of you to watch out for him, Grace," Dan tells her when she returns with the key, remarking on the fact that Samir might be - unhappy with her. One of his hands is on Sera's spare shoulder, beneath her damp curls. The other is on her opposite bicep. They're close.

Sera accepts the key from Grace's hand. Well, first trades-off the thermos full of whiskey-laden tea, then accepts the key. She takes this neat little breath, watching Grace or a beat, or two, or even three longer than is necessary, then exhales, long and quiet. Wry.

"Grace," she says, still-quiet, frowning a bit, thoughtful. Glances down at the keys as she turns them over in-hand, then back up. "You know that's not about you, right? Right now. Whatever he's feeling. He's unmoored right now, that's all. Don't take it to heart. I'm sure he'll thank you for everything, when he's better."

--

Doesn't say anything more, Sera. Turns over the keys.

Opens the door.

--

Tries to, anyway. It only goes so far. Gets stuck and Sera tries to push it harder and it is Dan who stops her pushing Pulls her back a bit, a gentle pressure on her spine. Bends over and kisses her on the crown of her head, murmurs something into her ear.

It's not like a closed door will keep her from doing magick. It makes it harder, though.

--

"Samir, it's Sera. I wanna help, but you need to let me in. It's harder from out here. Please open the door."

Grace

"Oh, I'm very aware that's all about his... you know," Grace says. "I think he's afraid of me is all."

She takes the thermos, steps back, gives Dan this look: a bit of exasperation, though not at anyone in particular. More, this situation. It's frustrating. The door sticks, and Grace doesn't speak anymore. She just looks up at the ceiling, like it might have some answers.

There is a thing that might have some answers, might it not? She fishes for her cell phone in her jeans pocket, pulls it out.

Samir

"Ah, fuck..."

The muffled exclamation sounds almost mournful. Like this is worse than he thought it was so much as he can claim to be thinking part of his problem is his brain is always on and it's always overthinking but if his brain were the thing misfiring right now it'd be an easy fix. It's not his brain. It's his Avatar or the cosmos or the code. Something.

A moment of silent contemplation. Shut the fuck up. Think. Where the hell am I. Are there more of them? Does it matter? It doesn't matter. How the fuck does this window--

Oh there it goes.

A latch pops.

Serafíne

Sera listens. Closes her eyes behind those glasses and breathes out something like a sigh.

"I don't think there's anything we can do, Grace. I'm sorry. I'm just gonna go."

Nudges Dan with her right shoulder and hands the keys back to Grace, then turns around and heads back down the stairs.

Grace

She looks up from her phone (still showing Samir inside his room) when Sera speaks, her eyebrows almost meeting in the middle of her forehead. "Okay. I'll keep an eye on him, I guess."

She breathes out a sigh, and looks around -- at the door, at Sera, at Dan. "Well, thanks for coming, anyway. Any time you want to come by and play laser tag, or... our library is open to anyone, so..."

But, hey, maybe now's not the time.

"Just, yeah. If anything changes, I'll let you know."

Stop.

They're walking away and Grace is saying something about fucking laser tag, her brows drawn together over her eyes, and outside there's more than the latch opening there is the rattle of a window in its casement and maybe the sudden drop of a body -

- no -

nothing hits the ground. No one heads downstairs. The seconds are peeling themselves backwards and apart and there is something about this that is so inherently wrong it feels like unsplitting a broken-atom, like pushing ink back into the nib of a pen. Just a wrench and shaking her hands are shaking her hands are shaking as she reaches out to take the keys from Grace's hand and Grace is saying or maybe thinking that Sera should be the one to open the door because Samir is maybe a little bit afraid of her right now and Sera is looking at the keys in her hand and gives Grace a quirky little frown, pushes the keys back into her hand.

"On second thought, he locked the door. Let's not barge in. Let's go back downstairs?"

So: noise outside. Grace's voice, others. Keys yes, but none in the lock.

Footsteps shuffling in recessional.

Dan's giving Sera a suspicious look but that might be the suggestion of restraint over the keys or something.

Grace

Time unhooks itself, starts rolling back. A few seconds go by, the other direction. Surely the universe won't miss them. Right?

For all Grace is aware, the lingering presence of Sera goes and makes her feel as though between-worlds in a sudden burst of Working that lingers -- without a trace of what actually changed -- right as she hands the keys over, trying to explain why she shouldn't be the one to open the door.

Sera's pushing the keys back on to her. Yes, let's go back downstairs. Grace didn't really want to open that door in the first place.

"Sure. There's a room with some couches down there," she says, gives Sera's shaking hands a little look. Wonders what changed her mind.

But then, she turns and walks down the hall again. Samir's sanctum of solitude won't be breached just yet.

Samir

They both know him better than they might think they do. He hasn't changed. It's the reality surrounding him that's changed. Samir is locked inside his own thin cocoon of paradox more than he can say to be locked inside that room but he is still in there somewhere.

They both know even if he has never admitted to it that Samir suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder. On a bad day he doesn't like to touch things other people have touched and he doesn't want to touch other people and he'll hole up in his own apartment. They've lost track of him for weeks already because he won't reach out when he's having a bad time and it's so easy to forget about him anyway. Even on good days he seems distracted by his own thoughts.

This is a bad day. With mood swings and voices whispering in his ear.

He is sitting on the floor in the corner of the room. The window is closed. The door is locked but not barred. There are two voices out in the corridor. He breathes slow and waits until he hears footsteps retreat down the corridor. Then he crawls underneath the reassembled bed and wraps his arms around his ribs and closes his eyes.

Serafíne

Downstairs, they find the couches Grace mentioned. Sera can feel the faint jangle of broken reality behind her eyes, at the back of her skull, held off, waiting. So she closes her eyes and doesn't really think about it.

She's good that that, Sera. Not thinking about the Thing Behind Her when she wants to avoid instead of simply deny reality.

Dan sits in the corner of the couch. Sera sits beside him, sort of curls up against him. Rests her sharp little chin on his chest. Grace might offer them something to eat - that happens here sometimes, or so we hear, but if so Sera waves it off. Unscrews the lid on her thermos and takes a sip of her whiskey-laced tea.

Then gulps it down like a shot.

Does another like that.

"Tell me what that room looks like, Grace. While I Work. It'll help me imagine it."

They do pass a kitchen on their way downstairs. There is a cake on the table inside, and some cookies. They are vegan carob cookies, because Samir used "I'm a vegetarian" as an excuse not to eat once. Now, the taste of those atrocious cookies might be what's caused him to believe them to be full of mind-control goo. Carob kind of has that lingering aftertaste.

But they pass it, and Grace offers a cookie (because she wants to find somebody else who likes them other than Elijah) and gets told no. And they continue.

"Well, depending on whether he's disassembled his bed again, there *is* a bed in there. Or at least parts of one. It's a rectangular room. Like, about four hundred square feet? And the walls are green. Tile floors, with some of Kalen's Persian rugs on them, because it's all tile and he might want to go barefoot. Um... there's a window? It faces West."

There's other things too. A painting on the wall that Grace only barely recalls, and a couch (because this place sprawls with couches). There's a dresser too. But she doesn't mention those.

Instead, she goes to one of the puffed-up overstuffed chairs in the little sitting room and plops herself into it.

Samir

There was a painting on the wall. Now it's been taken down and propped canvas-side towards the wall. No damage done to it but Sam didn't want the damned thing watching him and he had to scrub the walls down anyway. That room smells much more strongly of antiseptic than it ever did before he started staying with them and that window may have been open while he was on his cleaning binge Monday but it's just as likely he did not open it.

Irrelevant. Sera can't see what Sam is doing upstairs. She can feel the low hum of his resonance for the persistence of his Quiet. Like threading a needle. He's oblivious. If he were in his right mind he would have snipped the thread so soon as he was aware of it but he is not aware of it. He's underneath the bed trying to sleep.

It's difficult. Sometimes he hears the echoes of a monstrous woman's shriek. He smells rotting meat.

He does nothing to resist Sera.

Dan tightens his arms around Sera's spare shoulders. Even he can feel the hum of her resonance, the en-victualled, enthralling thrill of it. A few of the hairs on his forearm stand on end. She is both here and / there because there is no here or / there there is only is. Can't see it but behind the glasses her eyes are closed. Her throat works neatly to swallow another mouthful of tea that Dan kindly helps her steer toward her lips. Not that she's drunk this quickly, no, but she started earlier and she is allowing herself to become loosed, unmoored, unmade, undone. Something very un-everything about her magick. The way she lets go of her/self the way she has neither her nor self, the way she becomes everything and nothing.

just, you know, all.

Starts humming somewhere in all this, nothing more than a hum, faint enough that it sounds meditative.

Grace

Grace has never really understood how this works. How Sera can just drink a thing or smoke a thing and the universe changes for her. I mean, if that were a thing that worked, every college student who ever filled a stairwell with the aroma of pot would be turning back the pages of Time as they did so.

But, however it works, it does. That's all Grace really needs to know.

She stays quiet as Sera does her thing. Personally, she always likes a bit of focus when she's untangling the Tapestry's strings, making them dance to her direction. She does, however, pull a leg up into the chair, her foot resting in her lap. It's comfortable, for a certain type of person...

Samir

To compare it to the sudden yearned-for cessation of a headache isn't accurate. It's close. He may very well never talk to either of the women downstairs about what it's like to live with his illness. Ignore the fact that they're the closest thing to friends he has in this city.

Well. One of them is. One of them was or could have been or almost was. Plenty of reasons for her not to be here and she is anyway. Neither of them can reach in and pluck the paradox from the room cast it outside blot it out with her own energy but getting him to sleep so he can fight this off himself is a greater help than Sam can even see right now.

He isn't blind to the world around him. When Grace found him he was. He was getting better and he's blind to the fact that he was getting better.

That itch to check everything in the room is gone. He's too tired to stay busy enough to keep himself distracted from the thoughts that let themselves in unannounced. Those stop too.

Sam exhales as if he'd been holding his breath this entire time. No one is there to see it. He's alone with his madness but it's a madness reduced to one front now. May take him a few days to come out of it enough to recognize that he wasn't actually alone. Right now he's tired and no one is trying to open the door.

He lies still a moment and when he's assured of the fact that he can move Sam rolls onto his back and climbs out from under the bed.

4 Grace does not understand how Sera can do what she does, and the truth is that that equation works the other way, too. Sera does not understand how magick can function within the confines of all these devices, programs, data.

But she's not thinking about any of that right now. She is / everywhere. A moment where her mouth is seamed and her eyes are closed and the humming stops.

Then something else. Sharper, more gut-wrenching than the work she has done until now. You can do this/You can make it through.

(mind 2/prime 2 - modified cult-y hope's birth, which can give 1 temp willpower. this is more like a gut-twisting affirmation of strength/life than hope, specifically. Would be more poetic but it is late and I am tired).

"I think that's all I can do." Sera murmurs when she comes to / from wherever she's been, Half-sitting up, dress rucked up, hair mostly dry by now, at least on the surface. Dan helps her off him and then stands up and reaches down a hand for her and she rises, too. Gives Grace a distracted little smile and heads out with Dan. He opens the van door for her, reading a certain tension in her brow and in her body that has him paying attention to her as he circles the van, opens the driver door, climbs inside.

Waits.
