Washington Park has to be lovely this time of year. And it is. It's the period before autumn starts to turn the leaves green, but it's cooled off from the hot summer months and that makes it much more tolerable. The sun is setting, casting the sky in brilliant reds, oranges and purples above the greenery.

You would think that this would be a perfect time for people to be out and about, but it's also a new school year and people are busy with other things. That makes tonight relatively sparse in terms of population. There are a couple people here or there, but most of them are on their way out. There's a guy who been laying on a blanket on the grass reading, but he's since fallen asleep. Anyone within sight of this particular vicinity--the path that circles around Smith Lake, within view of the elegant boat house--are a ways away and dealing with their own things.

Sitting near the edge of the lake is a particular sight that some of the Awakened may find familiar. Interestingly enough, it was pretty sparsely populated then too on that Sunday morning half a year earlier. A scarecrow stands on a post about eight feet tall, dressed in a dark trenchcoat and a black stovetop hat, with velvety dark pants and a dress shirt under the coat. Just hanging out there, out of nowhere.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen has been a frequent visitor to Washington Park for the last six months. He's come to the same spot overlooking the edge of the lake and stayed there, quietly. Sometimes he prays there, because the place you meet something like The Message is probably as sacred as a sanctuary. Not an Angel, The Message; but, at least to Kalen, angelic.

It has been half a year, but time...time is a fluid thing. Particularly where The Message is. So, despite the weeks stretching into months, Kalen didn't give up. It has been long enough, with enough things that are not angelic or good, that Kalen is a little surprised to see a scarecrow at the edge of the lake again.

His approach is smoother this time. With less limping and a touch less caution. A touch. There could be more things here than just The Message. It could be, somehow, another Sending. Perhaps all Sendings manifest as scarecrows. Perhaps they all manifest as scarecrows here.

Gwendolyn Bishop

It wasn't parent/teacher conferences and, for that, Gwendolyn was thankful. The first place she had been in the city was a museum, a place to see the planes and to be intrigued by the history of flight. The second place that Gwendolyn went, of course, was a bookstore. And a month did pass, and the Etherite spent her time making a circuit from home to work to the grocery store back to her Summer Home. The place she took with her, that felt warm when it was warm and cool when it was cool and whatever mindscape Gwendolyn had created was set aside in favor of being at the park.

Summer Home could wait.

It would all still be there when she went to sleep.

Gwendolyn was making her way through the park, because it was a lovely enough day and Washington Park was the kind of place that she enjoyed being. She was a solitary craeture, clad in a pair of yoga pants and a tee shirt from some concert she had been to a few years back. She didn't seem like she would be old enough to be a fan of Prince, but the Musicology tour had been pretty spectacular. Her sunglasses were perched on top of her head, and over one shoulder there was a messenger bag instead of a purse. She turned heads when she walked. She turned heads when she did a lot of things, but what turned her head was

"A scarecrow?"

Gwendolyn fished through her bag for a tablet. Thin and bleeding edge (but not foldable, not yet, she was still working on that). She tapped on the screen idly as she prepared to run a certain diagnostic scan for fluctuations in the area's magnetic field.

Alexander

The evening is slowly drawing in, and the sky is beautiful. The weather is warm, the city – this part of it, at least – is at peace. It’s the perfect evening for a walk through the park, really.

It’s been a few days since the events at the Black Orchid and Alexander is still wearing the dark bruises of that night. His shift had finished a couple of hours ago, but he hadn’t felt like going straight home. So? He’s been walking the city with no real direction in mind. Not consciously, at least. He’s been happy to drift, following crowds, taking random turnings and alleyways. His meandering had brought him to the edge of Washington Park and, just on the off-chance, he thought he’d check again for a certain Message. It’s been how many months with no sign of him reappearing? Six, maybe?

Those first couple of months, he’d been here pretty frequently to look. There hadn’t been and sign of him reappearing – either in this world or over the Gauntlet. The visits had become less frequent until they came about once or twice a month. With time, who knows – maybe they would die out altogether. Who knows where he could be or what he’s getting up to.

So he walks through the park, around the lake. And sees a familiar figure. Two, actually. A rather mundane-looking – if out of place – scarecrow. And Kalen. Seeing them there, he picks up his pace and jogs towards the lake near the two of them.

“Small world. Is that who I think it is?” He calls out so Kalen can hear him before turning to the lake and peering down into his reflection. Excited, curious, he wants to make sure that this is more than someone’s frat joke.

Serafíne

Serafíne does not stake out the park as Kalen does, but she is here often nevertheless. The neighborhood is close to her own; there's good shopping, there are little retro-hipster bars and cafés not far from here. She's always meeting someone or doing something, has some reason to be in the vicinity. Tonight, a small bag in her left hand as she walks back toward the park from Devil's Food, where she left some friends behind, perhaps because she wanted to smoke some pot and watch the sunset. Maybe she's supposed to meet Dan here later. Maybe she had a whim to go boating after dark, to feel the world moving around her and under her, water.

--

There. Clove cigarette in one hand, take-out bag in the other, hair loose and golden and curling where it is not shaved. A small plaid bustier and a tiny leather skirt that barely covers her ass. Fishnets and combat boots and a battered leather jacket with god-knows-what lurking in the pockets.

High maybe. Possibly.

Enough that she half-wonders, you know, if she hasn't somehow stumbled backward six months or so, watched the sun move the wrong direction.

But no -

They all pick up on it...that feeling that Alexander, Kalen and Serafine have felt before. It's a shimmering, ethereal feel and that's what Alexander and Kalen pick up on. Gwendolyn has a sense of age and yet, oddly, youth as well. Something that is relatively new to the universe and also carries the echo of something much older. Sera...well, she may or may not remember this feeling depending on how good her memory is. It's the primal essence, falling off like flakes of dust. Like looking through a window that you can't see what's on the other side.

Alexander gets a bit of magic off, letting him look across to the Spirit world. Unless Sendings all look identical, this is the very one they rememer. The Message stands there where his physical manifestation lays, the tall and angelic creature with the androgynous features and giant owl wings.

Gwendolyn is going for her tablet to do some scans, and the scarecrow does something that may take her attention away from the device. It...moves. The head lifts, revealing the blank, vaguely misshapenly-carved block of wood that makes up its face. The raising of its head causes a slow, almost ominous creaking sound as that featureless wood turns to each of them, regarding them in turn.

"I remember you," it says to Sera, Kalen and Alex, and Alexander sees it smiling in a very faint manner. "You are off the Traditions. You received the message before." It looks at Gwendolyn then, the head tilting right with a creak into a curious cant.

"I do not know you. Are you of the Traditions as well?"

Alexander

Alexander looks at the lake, at his reflection. Through the reflection and out the other side. The magic isn’t strong, barely holding itself together, but it does hold long enough for him to turn and see the scarecrow properly.

“It’s him! It’s really him!” He’s smiling widely as he says it, walking over to join Kalen. Maybe this is the sense of wonder that the others have been talking about. He’d seen the birth of this creature come from the death of another, and then see it become more than the relatively mindless creation that it was to the aware being that now stands (flies!) in front of them.

“How have you been, Message? What have you been doing since we last saw you?” He holds out a hand in greeting, if the Message decides to take it.

Alexander only notices Gwendolyn when the Message turns to look at her, and suddenly the smile fades as he turns to face her. On guard. Here is someone Awakened and unknown. Is she of the Traditions? Or Union?

Kalen Holliday

"Yes," Kalen says, his shoulders relaxing a little as the feeling of The Message washes against his skin like light. He reaches out once to touch Alexander's shoulder. It is hardly as though there is time for all the usual greeting things people do. How are you. How about that weather. Has our team of choice scored more points than average or less this term of play. Fuck all that. The Message is here.

Granted, Kalen can only so often be bothered with normal greetings anyway.

He smiles at the statement that The Message remembers. Nods. Only that The Message is so close to the water prevents Kalen from running up to embrace a scarecrow, Instead, he holds one arm out for Sera. It isn't as though she needs help to balance off the path in those heels, and he knows that, but he offers anyway. Because more complicated things prevent him from running up to embrace Sera.

Only then does he turn his eyes, so pale in the dusk that their color is impossible to determine beyond extremely pale, on Gwendolyn. Steady. Expectant. She is the only being here he does not know. Does not trust. So he watches her carefully as she responds to The Message.

Gwendolyn Bishop

Was she of the traditions as well?

Well, one doesn't argue with a moving scarecrow. The Scientist pulled her tablet close to her rather impressive chest and the lady made a small eep noice. Clearly, the woman wasn't expecting to be addressed by a scarecrow, but she striaghtens up and smoothed out her shirt and she had to be a representative. A symbol. If she was going to be a respectable and non-embarrassing Etherite (not Son of Ether, she wasn't a Son of anything) she didn't need to seem so openly surprised when randomly placed scarecrows started moving.

But then there were people looking and she was suddenly wishing she wasn't wearing workout clothes and, instead the woman took a second, inhaled deeply, and introduced herself.

Introductions were easy enough, but she wasn't twelve anymore. she wasn't pale. No, her hair was dark, her yes were dark and her skin was tan- be that from spending time outdoors or a natural predisposition to a darker complection was hard to tell. Her lips were full, her eyes were bright, and she could fake enough confidence to get through an introduction.

"I am of the traditions. Doctor Gwendolyn Wade-Bishop, son of Ether," okay, so maybe she wasn't that good at introductions. Straight and to the point that one.

Serafíne

Serafíne is a disciple of Life and Mind and Time. She remembers everything, except her own history - which must be a choice, conscious or unconscious, decided or decidedly undecided. A path she has taken as her own and for her own.

For the nonce.

And she isn't thinking about The Sending at all, just the way the light bleeds over the horizon and the way it makes her lungs feel, sometimes, as if they were aflame, the way she swallows the air, the way the evening hums, cool, the darkness closer, the lights in the windows of the houses lining the streets so precise and so discrete and so immediate that they seem full of secrets, the lovely, sliding sort of secrets that always belong to the strangers locked behind those stranger's doors.

She is holding: the sun in her throat and the moon on her tongue, the sweet smoke and the ground beneath her feet, the remnants of whatever-that-was in the bag swinging from her right hand and -

- oh. oh. oh.

She feels everything. Alexander's chill and Kalen's storm, like a front on the horizon. Something else - tenacious - beneath her skin. Hanging on, you see.

Hanging on.

And: shimmering, rising, which makes her lungs want to expand as if she could leave the ground. (You must understand that she already knows what it means to rise.)

Kalen offers her an arm and Sera glances up at his profile. It might seem to be the first time she has noticed him. She smells like cloves and burnt sugar and tobacco and rhum and she takes his arm, easy as you please, stepping carefully from the path on to the grass. A glance at Gwendolyn, banked and lambent.

Oh she is lovely.

And Sera, tightening her grip on Kalen's arm, bites the inside of her cheek, hard enough that she breaks the skin. That she bleeds. The spike of pain pushes her out of her skin, focuses her senses as she, looks and Looks.

Sera expands her vision to catch manifestations of Prime, and she picks up on the coalescing Quintessential energy around Alex's eyes. There is also the vague sense of something floating around the scarecrow, of course; the Message was created by those shards of Avatars created by the Avatar Storm, after all. It's not quite an active Effect obviously, but it's close.

"Ether. Yes, of course." The blank face doesn't smile--features are generally required for that--but there is a sense of satisfaction. The scarecrow looks from her to Alexander. It doesn't reach out and take his hand on this side of the Gauntlet; that hand is still bound to the cross-pole, after all. But there is a sense of acknowledgement, and in the Umbra where it can't touch him the Message bows its head which makes the scarecrow do the same.

"I need your help. Someone needs your help. There is something on the other side that is harming us, and we need assistance from those who have the capacity to do so. Will you help us?"

The question seems posed to all four of them.

Serafíne

Sera focuses her vision primarily on Gwendolyn, the stranger whom she does-not-precisely-know as Gwendolyn introduces herself. She can see the energy around Alexander's gaze - a slanting glance, all sidelong, and something about her is satisfied that the apprentice is imposing his will on the world. Perhaps Alexander will feel the dark smear of her gaze on his countenance, in the twilit park, perhaps he is too focused on the Message to sense her attention.

Regardless, her attention slides back to the Message, and Sera offers a neat little shrug.

"'Course. Who's we?"

Kalen Holliday

"Doctor Gwendolyn Wade-Bishop," Kalen says quietly, mimicking her inflection not because there is any mockery but because Names have power. "Welcome to Denver."

And then he turns back to The Message. Not because he is finished his evaluation of Gwen but because The Message is here and Alexander is here and Sera is here. The last Mage he met under these circumstances, he invited into his cabal. Of course, Alexander had known Sera. That may have smoothed over a bit of the normal reluctance to trust.

There is no hint of reluctance in his answer to The Message. "I will help you." He does not speak for the others, but he expects that Alexander and Serafine will come. He expects Gwen will come too. She is, after all, here. Friend or enemy...her presence is almost certainly fate. One does not argue with fate. Coax, barter, influence...perhaps. But argue, no.

So he stays there, near Alexander, Serafine on his arm, watching The Message. He smiles a little at Sera's answer, leans sideways a little to touch his temple to hers. She's close enough to his height in heels.

Alexander

Lowering his hand, Alexander returns the bow of the head. The last time he’d seen it, it had been fully capable of movement. So easy to forget that was in another world…

Alexander eyes Gwendolyn warily as she introduces herself to the Message, and to the others. But it’s one thing to say you’re a Son (Daughter?) of Ether. It’s another to have some kind of confirmation or proof that that’s the case. At least when he’d been introduced to the others he’d so far met in the city, there had always been someone there to vouch for them. Even Alicia was known to Kalen, and Alexander? Trusted Kalen, Sera, Grace… Gwendolyn, not so much.

So he touches Kalen’s arm without looking at him – doing well, great weather, didn’t watch the game, we must get together some time – and moves, turns, to where he can look up at the Message while keeping Gwendolyn in sight.

Sera, though. Sera gets a warmer glance, a smile, a bowed head of her own. It’s not exactly the hug from that evening in the Chantry, but then this isn’t exactly the Chantry kitchen with cooling tea in the pot.

Alexander looks back up at the Message when it explains why it’s here and a few emotions pass over his face. Curiosity that there might be more Messages out there. Concern that they were threatened. Dread at what was shortly going to follow, even if he had been relatively spared compared to the others – especially to Sera. She gets another glance, worried for her.

“Yes. What is it that’s hurting you?”

Gwendolyn Bishop

"Of course," she replied, but without any hesitation. Nothing that would indicate that she was anything other than capable. Anything other than ready because she had to be ready. Her attention stayed with the Message, though briefly it does wander to take in the other three people who were to be addressed. The technomancer stayed rather comfortably where she was, content to not meander over and invade the space of the other three, and she very carefully put her tablet back into her messenger bag.

That feeling, of something building. It's familiar, and he knows what's coming. Alexander moves over to Sera, rests a hand on her shoulder and gets ready to support her. He gives Gwendolyn a glance. “This is going to hurt.” Then he closes his eyes.

opus auxilium

"I am most apologetic, but as before, it will be easier to provide answers on the other side."

And in truth, he does seem to feel bad as the four mages feel their perceptions ripple and thickness surrounds them, like the air is congealing but less physical than that. That thickness slowly gives way and their vision goes blurry as they start to pass through the Gauntlet.

And then the pain. But of interesting note to the four (or three, plus Gwen if she has ever passed into the Umbra before)...it doesn't seem to hurt quite as much this time around. The sensation Alexander felt before, like a migraine that was spread through the whole of his being, feels more like a soreness after you wake up from a punishing workout. Kalen feels the migraine effect, suffusing his being, as does Gwendolyn. Sera might have been anticipating that horrendous pain flying through her synapses and connecting with her very soul, but it feels instead like a thousand little pinpricks, tingling and nipping. The sounds of screams, indistinct voices and mad babbling is fainter and fewer. The Avatar Storm does not feel as strong, particularly at this Shallowing.

When they come back to their senses, they find themselves in a graveyard. At least, that's what it feels like; there are no graves, no caerns and no monuments. It is a hallowed and yet desolate place of barren earth, devoid of life even here in the spirit world. A wide, black river sweeps along nearby, the water impenetrably dark. The mages get a shiver that runs up their spine...the cold void of death. Color is drab, except for them. They seem to stand out like a beacon...them and the Message. Kalen, Sera and Gwen can see it now, the tall being with the perfectly genderless human features and the graceful owl wings. It stands there and folds its hands in front of its chest, gives a polite half-bow.

"Thank you for coming. Since we first met, I have been travelling and establishing...alliances with other denizens of your realm and mine. These alliances have been very fruitful, and I find myself quite attached to them. Someone has been claiming them and taking them here. This person will not speak with me. I hope that they will speak to you, and you can argue for their release on my behalf."

Serafíne

Kalen touches his temple to her own and he has the impression of Sera's half-smile evident in his periphery. The curve of her cheek, the gleam of her shallowed gaze, the immediate awareness of her presence. A little nudge back with a hum, and they are remembering the pain of the Avatar Storm, Kalen and Alexander both, and Sera is not really remembering it in the same way they are; not anticipating it. Just holding some sharp knowledge inside herself and turning to glance at Alexander - a bit strangely, mind - as he rests his hand on her shoulder. Nothing objecting, there. Sera never objects to touching another creature, or being touched.

--

And then.

And now -

Her breathing is sharp and shallowed and there are tears in her eyes but she is not on the ground, Sera, not screaming, not keening, not anything except -

in pain, in passing pain, tears in her eyes, grinding her teeth, her mouth flat, pressed together as she works to bear it.

Graveyards: she shivers, Sera, visibly, physically, moistening her mouth and starting to hum again, beneath her throat. The notes are eerie, and have this sense about them as if they were both necessary and essential and forgotten or perhaps half-remembered, like a song written into the skin of your bones.

"Just, your friends?" Sera asks, quiet you see. "Or, everything the graveyard can hold?"

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does not close his eyes to prepare for shifting into the Umbra because he so very rarely sees the spirit world. One day, he will learn. But there are so many things to learn. And there may be moments when he speaks in that measured voice and he says that knowledge is power where it is possible to believe he would learn everything for that reason. Except there are moments like this, where his eyes are wide and full of wonder and it is so vividly clear that Kalen will learn everything he can because the cosmos is a vast, mysterious, wondrous place.

He wants to see everything.

But then there is pain, sharp and hot and spreading through him. He can taste it, thick and warm on the back of his tongue. And something like death. Different than the death last weekend. New weekend, new kind of death. That's how Denver rolls.

He starts to reach for Alexander, because the fucking world is spinning and there is red boiling in the space behind his eyes, but then he remembers Alexander is more than solid and cold, Alexander has Serafine. Instead he takes a breath and forces his eyes open and takes a step closer to The Message. But already the world is steady enough. The sense of something ephemeral and sacred shredding as the shards of other Avatars grated and brushed and raged against it is diminished, somehow. Still, the memory of them is cold. Always cold.

He is listening to The Message and he is getting his bearings and then his eyes linger warily on the river. "What do you know about this person?" He asks The Message without taking his eyes off the water.

Alexander

The feeling builds, reaches its crescendo. Alexander takes a deep breath, tensing for the inevitable…

He grunts as it hits, but more out of expectation than actual pain. He wonders for a moment whether something had gone wrong, if reality had chosen not to allow itself to be bent that way and pushed back against the Message. He opens his eyes again and looks up at the Message, smiling again as its true form shows clearly. Then he looks at Sera, remembering the effect of being pulled through the Gauntlet had on her the last time around. She seems… ok. Not great, by any means, but she’s still standing this time. As is Kalen. A glance at Gwendolyn again – to check that she’s still with them.

Now that the Message is fully free again, Alexander moves to its side while he looks around, releasing his light touch on Sera and touching the Message’s arm gently, momentarily, instead.

He tries – and fails – to suppress a shiver at the feel of the place. He crosses his arms across himself and rubs them as if for warmth. If it’s possible for such a thing to exist here. The Archmage’s final resting place may have been a cave in some nameless realm far from everything that would normally be called living. But it still had life. Unknown, wild, untameable life, maybe, but still life. Here?

Is this where spirits come when it’s time for them to move on? he wonders to himself. He turns on the spot, taking in the bare earth, the desolate stillness in the air. Sera and Kalen are getting information about why they’ve been requested. Alexander? Starts walking towards the black river while they talk, listening while he does. Curious creature.

Gwendolyn Bishop

Her head hurts. A terrible feeling that washes over her, that settles in a space behind her eyes and she closed them tightly. She was expecting the worst, but this? this didn't... quite feel the same. This didn't quite feel like what she was expecting. There was a feeling of coldness on her spine and the woman shuddered. Possibly from the cold. She's never passed into the umbra before, and instead she found herself transported to a different plane.

She quickly patted herself down to make sure she had all of her faculties in order, and that her sunglasses hadn't fallen off in transit. She ached, and she hurt in ways that she was not expecting to hurt, but there was death here. She lreached into her messenger bag again to take out her tablet. the young woman caught movement out of the corner of her eye and- "Hey, I don't think you should go there alone."

She followed along with Alexander, but Gwen stopped just long enough to try and get a feel for what precisely made up that black river. She typed along on the little metal device, scribbling some chemical equation on the screen and hoping to find some revelation in the work.

Sera realizes with a cold dread that, as she scans around, the only Life Patterns that she senses are the four of them, the Awakened. But it's more than just that. When you use Life magic to scan for Patterns, you often have to filter out simpler Patterns to narrow down to the complex ones. That isn't needed here. The dirt, the air, the water--especially the water, more than anything. Nothing here is alive, even remotely. No fish. No worms in the earth. No microbes, no bacteria. Technically they shouldn't be able to live like this, but this is the Umbra and luckily biological rules don't quite apply.

As such, obviously, there are no living minds outside of the four Mages to scan. She does get a vague sense of another intelligence, somewhat similar to way the Message's mind registers. A spirit's. But it's much more vast.

opus auxilium

Sera immediately starts to reach out with her senses as she and the others asks for clarification, and she gets her answers. She also gets an answer from The Message, who spreads his hands.

"Those I know is what I seek. I do not presume to seek everything from this resting place...that is entirely too vast. And those who are laid here came here naturally. Those who were taken...they did not come here in a natural manner."

Onto Kalen then, who is on edge because of that pitch-black but free-flowing river. He's a wise Hermetic, but also one who has experience with fearing rivers. "They are a guardian here. Or was intended to be. The more they caretake, the more power they get. I believe they stumbled upon this fact and avarice, unfortunately, grew within them."

Alex goes over to investigate the river, and Gwen warns him about doing so alone. She may have a point; as he gets closer to the edge, that chill in his bones--a cold more penetrating than temperature--grows and expands. It would seem that the river itself is leeching his heat directly from him. As he gets closer, they all feel something around them...stirring. It isn't anything physical; no zombies coming from the ground or anything like that. More like a consciousness orienting its attention toward them.

Movement as Alexander and Gwen head off toward the river draws his attention. "Careful, Alce," he murmurs. He does not stop either of them, but his eyes are uneasy as he watches them head toward the river. He listens to The Message, but his eyes track Alexander and Gwen headed for the river.

"We will do what we can," he says to The Message. He manages to tear his eyes away from the river long enough to look back, reach out to clasp The Message's shoulder.

And then Sera is speaking and he takes a breath. "We should be with them, when it gets here." He sets his jaw and extends his arm to Sera again as they walk. Because who wouldn't offer an arm to a lady in a creepy spirit graveyard...? Because they are headed toward some kind of night-black river, like the icy water that nearly drowned him and the life-stealing shadows summoned from the place Thakinyan lived that nearly devoured his soul had somehow melded into a single, greater nightmare? It’s cold. Cold. So damned cold. Not ice cold, not snow cold, not the wind either. Something less tangible but so much more penetrating. He hugs himself tighter as he approaches the river. He wasn’t dressed for the cold – it had been a warm evening before they came here – but even so… It wouldn’t help.

Alexander looks back at the others – Sera and Kalen, as they talk with the Message. He has been listening, calling back with, “Intended to be the caretaker? Intended by who? Or what?” But he turns back to the river.

He feels something waking. Something that’s not alive, as such. Not from their world? Something created? Does Sera sense the Message as alive? He doesn’t understand enough about her magic to know.

But he does know that there is something strange about the river. Something making him feel like he’s freezing, more than already frozen. That the sensation that usually lingers around him isn’t even the end point for how far it can go.

There’s nothing alive, but there is the dead. Resting or trapped, maybe. Maybe he can sense what the others can’t. He keeps on walking towards the river, but pushes his will against reality while he moves. Reaching out to sense the spirits that may be nearby but not visible to their normal, mundane senses. Maybe he can see if that thing that they're all feeling is in the river...

"There is nothing living in that river," she called out, as though this would be some kind of help. Gwendolyn tapped something on her tablet again, nodding and keeping her findings for the time being. She continued forward to try and catch up with Alexander, but she wasn't a fast creature. She wasn't an athletic creature, and the entirety of the feeling of death around her , "if this is what I think it is... we're at the river Styx. Which means..."

She called out to the man by the river, the one who had been headed tht way and Gwendolyn stopped in her tracks. she didn't run, she couldn't run, she would just get winded in a matter of moments. She did not feel ill at ease surrounded by all this death. only... out of place.

Sera is right; there is a presence, something big. And then, in an instant, it isn't there. That instant sees a--yep, you guessed it--a gondola coming into view from the other side of the river. It's wide enough that you can't even see the other side, by the way, and thus perhaps not surprising that you didn't notice the boat on the other side.

The figure inside of it along on with a pole, but he is no ferryman. It is a man, in point of fact. Or looks like one. He is dressed in a black leather racing jacket, with neon green stripes down the arms long, platinum blonde hair. He looks to be in his mid-30s, perhaps. Riding leathers make up his full outfit, in fact, and he's looking at the four of them (five of them: The Message too) with a look of sly amusement.

"Well, well, well," he says as he pushes closer, stopping a few feet from the edge. He appears to be talking to The Message, who is no longer smiling. It is not scowling, but this one...he does not get a smile. "You brought some friends, I see."

Serafíne

"He," Sera has taken Kalen's arm as they walked, but now she unwraps her arm from his and takes one careful step closer to the ferryman, to his gondola, to the black, black river. " - says that you have taken souls that do not belong here, souls or spirits or what the fuck ever.

"Why?"

Alexander

The others may or may not sense the tingle as he pushes his will against reality again, but they will see him suddenly freeze. Hard to tell from the back, but he’s balanced on a hair’s breadth between freezing up completely and running away. He freezes and… backs away, very slowly. Even without Gwendolyn’s shouted warning, he has absolutely. No. Intention. Of touching that water.

He backs away, still looking at the surface of the water, getting faster as he builds up distance. He may be in control – just – but that river? Is not something he wants to look down into again.

Alexander starts to speak, but his voice catches in his throat. He clears it once, twice, before the words come. “They.” He turns his head to look at Kalen, Sera. Even Gwendolyn. And he’s white as a sheet, blood drained from his face. “This is a prison, and they can never… never be freed.”

He turns back to watch the boat arrive, still moving towards the others. He’s silent, though.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen's attention is mostly on the thing in the gondola and the water at first. On Sera, so alive she seems like she should burn this place, stepping forward to challenge it.

But then he does look toward Alexander, reaching out to rest a hand on his shoulder once he is close enough. "Never is a rather absolute word. And, in a world such as this one, just as in ours, sometimes rules can be broken. Bent. Temporarily suspended. To most of our world, what we do is impossible." He manages to smile, even here, in a spirit graveyard next to a terrible spirit river, because this is what he was trained for. This is what he promised to do for the world, and he may have extended that promise to the whole of creation he can affect. Because you cannot just abandon your Calling because you're not standing on the same earth,

Moments like this are practically the only time he feels whole.

But how do do they break or suspend these rules? Most likely with the thing that just arrived. But how to make it cooperate....?

"Excuse me, I apologize, we haven't been properly introduced yet," one can tell she is a teacher. That she is a teacher of high school students because there was a line drawn where her infinite patience would prove itself not-so infinite. She did not know who this man was, and her suspicions were not confirmable due to the dissonance with the legend. She took a look at the man, and pondered. he tried to think of something her mother may have ranted about.

And my, didn't Pomegranate Deme rant about a number of things. But this is a river she knew as a child. this is a story that Gwendolyn knows because it was some part of her

She reached up to pluck the sunglasses off of her head, toying with the earpiece idly.

The man in the gondola leans on the pole, seemingly uncaring about the fact that it perches him precariously over the water a bit. Sera speaks up first, and he raises an eyebrow. "You," he says with a bit of a grin. "Are rude as fuck. You should learn to be more polite, especially if your friends are right and I have something you want. It's polite to say hello before you start making demands of people. Like this...'Hello.'"

He straightens from his lean on the pole, just so he can make a bit of a dramatic bow. Alexander's reaction catches his attention too, and his grin gets a little wider. "Breathtaking, isn't it? I sometimes like to stare into it and just imagine the vastness of it all. It's empowering."

And then Gwen speaks and he turns his attention to her. "Ah, someone who can be polite. Nice to meet you Gwendolyn. I'm Zane. This is my boat, and this is my part of the river. If it falls into the river, it's mine. So I think it's less a disagreement than a case of possession being 9/10ths of the law. The law of the Universe, in this case."

He cocks his head. "What kind of agreement are you thinking of?"

Kalen Holliday

"The whole of Creation has fewer laws and more truths." Kalen says quietly. "You found that the more beings you had stewardship of the more power you had. Some of those you have belong here, they came here because this is where they belong. The ones you took...possession may be a thing you can keep by force but for those beings...it is not yours by right.

"We seek the return of those who should not be here. To restore everything to the place in which it is intended to be." He steps up to Sera's side. There is a shudder as he glances at the water, but then he looks up from it and into Zane's eyes. "We can offer you power from a living source, which is a rare and precious thing here."

Gwendolyn Bishop

Kalen gives them something to offer, power from a living source. Something that was rare indeed in a place like this. She nodded, content to back this stranger's play because, well, she can't say that they're a posse and not back his play. Whatever his name was.

Serafíne

Sera is humming beneath her breath, her arms still crossed, her body language turned inward. Her sense of What is Happening is approximate and tenuous. She understands that they are in a place of death and knows at least the name Charon, the myth, the gold coins for the eyes. The places the dead are meant to go, but beyond that her understanding about what and how and whom they might be bargaining for is virtually nil. Alexander keep moving back, only really stopping once he’s back behind Sera and next to Kalen. He look around when he feels the hand on his shoulder. He doesn’t pull away or brush the hand off. This time, there’s comfort in the contact. Warmth. Knowledge that there is something good in the world. He looks Kalen in the eye, intent, intense. “No. Really. There’s no saving the ones that are meant to be there. Any of them. Ever.” He looks away again, back at the river. “So many of them…” He trails off, arms still wrapped around himself rubbing his arms for comfort more than for warmth.

It’s empowering. Alexander looks up at the thing calling itself Zane. He’s seen the wonder of spirits in the Message. The madness in the corrupted nature spirit by the reservoir. Now? He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at. Something that craves power. That likes to play. Something that he is, essentially, utterly powerless against. Poor little apprentice.

Kalen steps forward to stand with Sera, leaving him standing alone. He sighs, turns, walks back to the Message. To be close to something. And to ask quietly. “Who else controls the river? Can it be dammed? Diverted?” It may be naïve thinking this rivers works in the same way as one of water in their world but… you never know.

Here's the good news: Sera gets through. She penetrates his mind, which is significant because it means that he's living. If he was a spirit, she wouldn't be able to do it because unlike a corporeal person who has three primary patterns (Living, Mind, Spirit), a spirit has just the one.

Here's the bad news: Sera gets through. Once she penetrates his mind, she realizes--too late--that he let her. He has a Mind shield up, but it's not designed to keep people out. It's designed to trick people in, and then not let them out until he desires it. It's a trap and it diverts Sera's attention to the darker portions of his mind. This is valuable information, but it's also distinctly, incredibly traumatizing information. Sera's never truly been in the mind of a Nephandus before. She's very, very lucky in the fact that he lets her out, but not before she has just the slightest hint of what it feels like to go through a Caul. Just the briefest instant. Even that is enough to nearly shatter her mind, but she holds herself together just enough that she doesn't completely lose her mind.

And then he lets go of her mind, and her consciousness slips back into her body.

Here's the other good news: she is still alive. And as an added bonus, she got just enough of his thoughts to realize that he's alive despite his proximity because of that boat and that pole. Somehow, this Nephandi managed to steal this ferry, or kill the ferryman. As long as he has the boat and rowing pole, he's safe from the river.

something like suspension from Serafíne, with her arms wrapped around her body and a stillness that betrays absolute concentration, rapt, enraptured perhaps, and then, then a remarkable moment of decompensation where she looks like she is crumbling, like something essential in the center of her body is collapsing in upon itself, shivering as if clawed hand were stringing its way up her spinal column.

"Stop." This to Kalen, and Sera is wrenching the word out of her body. It is something close to a command. You understand the power because there is beneath everything about her a powerful will strangers and sometimes even Sera herself cannot recognize. "Give him nothing. He has stolen that boat and he has stolen that pole and that is what protects him. He's human. He's awake. He's Fallen.

And she's backing away, stumbling a bit, from the river's edge, shaking, with fear, revulsion, both immediate and (so well) remembered and (so wholly) forgotten and she is gathering the strands of her magic, too. Pulling them back into herself, trying desperately to -

"The river," The Message says to Alexander, "is controlled by the Ferrymen. Their job is to bring people across the river, from one side to the other. The river itself is..." He gives a little shake of his head, regretful. "It is too wide to be changed. Even for those such as you."

Zane looks intrigued by Kalen's offer and he looks like he's about ready to respond. Then Sera enters his mind. The grin widens, getting a bit of a cruel twist to it as she gets inside and whatever happens in there sends her reeling. "You see what I said, chicky-poo? You're rude." He taps his temple, his tone taking on a vicious edge to the amused mocking. "Don't go places you aren't invited. That's called trespassing."

He turns his attention to Kalen, the nasty tone fading a bit. "So, this probably just got awkward. I'm still willing to deal though, if you want to give me power from a living source for your dead friends. Or I guess your...sentient spirit friend's dead friends? Whatever works. What are we talking about...a Node? A person? Animal, Vegetable, Mineral? I'm not too picky. Power is power."

Alexander

Alexander turns back to the others at Stop, listening to what Sera has to say. That this isn’t the ferryman. But that there are ferrymen. Others who control the river. Back to the Message. “These other ferrymen – can you bring them here? If this guy has taken down one of their own then they should be pissed enough to stop him. Right? Or whoever created the ferrymen and their tools?”

He might not be able to do much, but there’s usually someone bigger and badder lurking in the shadows who can.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen smiles, but his eyes are very, very cold. For the most part, Kalen fights because he chose to swear oaths and he adopted codes and he has this vision of Camelot. There are things that you do, and he does them with no particular anger. There are monsters and you kill them because you must. But monsters, in most of Kalen's experience, don't have choices about what they are.

The Fallen....

Alexander and Sera have both seen him fight. But they have not, until today, seen outright rage. Cold. Quiet. Consuming.

"No. I thought you were more proper ferryman. But the Fallen? You are not merely a creature that lusts for power, you are an abomination." He steps between the Thing and Sera.

He does not strike. Not yet. There is Sera to consider. Alexander. Protecting them is more important. Alexander has a plan. And Kalen knows this Thing will not let them walk away from a fight they are losing. The more time until reinforcements, if they can get them, the better.

Serafíne

And she is reeling, still reeling, giving these strange little involuntary shudders and fighting down her gorge and finding somehow within her body all of that pain and all of that revulsion and all of that sickness of mind and body, infection of it, the grotesquerie and pulling it, and pulling it, and pulling it close, and close, and closer still into the core of her body, feeling the frame of her consciousness shudder with it, Working.

The Message has not failed to pay attention to the information that Sera has provided, nor the suffering that she has incurred to gain that information. From the looks of his face--the way it twists into a look of rage, a look that the always polite Sending given sentience has never displayed to them before--it was definitely new information. He looks to the Orphan and nods, and just like that he takes flight.

It's amazing how quickly he can fly.

Sera, she is empowered by her pain. Any Cultist would be proud of that, the way she takes the extremes that her mind is pushed to and turns it into a strength. Even trees rent by lightning may grow new fruit, the Code of Ananda says. And rent though she may be at the moment, she unleashes some very like-minded fruit. It surprises the Nephandi; maybe he was just drunk on his own power, holding the stolen ferry of a powerful spirit that he managed to slay. There's a question of how that could have happened; maybe his Nephandic master aided him, or maybe he just got lucky. It's difficult to say.

Either way, his Qlippothic Mind magic is a nasty thing, but he never planned on someone coming here and actually projecting onto him. And so he leers at Gwendolyn (not like he wouldn't have anyway, but his attention goes straight to her, undivided. Even that look is enough to make Gwendolyn's skin crawl probably; in the moment, his friendly-yet-nasty guise is torn away and he's just straight twisted. But it does its job and he doesn't see or anticipate Sera's response. She's just a pretty girl who thinks she has power, he thinks, and she should be screaming right now. Maybe he'd notice she isn't if he wasn't using his imagination on Gwendolyn.

But he doesn't notice and it hits him like a ton of bricks. There's half an instant of surprise before the lights go out and he collapses. He was leaning forward just a little in his attention toward the Etherite, and that sends him topping over into the black waters lake.

They can hear laughter bubbling up from the water as he starts to sink, and they could swear that the water that he begins to submerge in take the form of hands, wrapping around him and pulling him under. He has a moment of regaining consciousness just before his head is submerged, and he opens his mouth to scream...but the water fills his throat and he sinks in, not even able to raise his hand in a silent call for help.

The black water ripples and then calms. It is like he was never there.

Serafíne

When when when does Sera ever say: what does this mean, what does this mean, what does this mean. What she says is: how does this feel in my body now, how does this feel against my skin, where is the pain and where is the sensation, what can happen next.

Everything.

Whoever is buried under there, hunter or otherwise, the man who pursues her, the hind she pursues, she wants him whole. She wants him free. She wants them all free, wants to weave a rope out of that golden hair that comes away and she thinks and strains and dreams and focuses and she: keeps spending herself and spending herself in the act of that focusing - pushing more and more of herself into the spell meant to knit together the bleeding ground.

How do you solve a problem like Elijah?

Serafíne

An exchange of texts led to the invitation to Eleanor's office. It is Sera's morning and everyone else's afternoon and Sera is curled up in a big green velveteen armchair and Sera does not really like to watch television but there is a Batman marathon on IFC and Dan has located it for her and Sera is wearing an overlarge sweatshirt and has her phone in one hand and a mug of her favorite tea on the table beside her and is watching the television show all fascinated (there are cheerleaders who want something refreshing to drink! there is a milk vending machine! it gives out silver dollars!) not quite believe that she isn't really high and there is a phone beneath a cake plate and and and and and their slide-poles and labeled with their names. DICK. BRUCE.

("Boys and girls! Go back to your studies! Believe me nothing in life is free!")

Oh, Batman. Sera is in love with you.

"This is the best thing ever." Sera asserts to Dan, and she is objectively correct. He has come to see if she wants to come to an afternoon sound check for a friend of theirs and she shakes her golden head no and tells him that she's going to college and she needs a ride.

---

The Sex Pistols in the car because Dan is in a super retro mood and Sera doesn't like them much except for their version of My Way which makes her smile, her temple against the glass as the city opens around her.

Universities are such strange and official places, especially in September, when the light is slanting and the students are all gung-ho and swarming even in late afternoons and Sera doesn't belong here, not in daylight, but here she is - sunglasses and sprawling light, looking like a rockstar, feeling like a rockstar and she checks in with Eleanor's secretary and takes a rather sprawling seat in one of the institutional waiting room chairs, still wearing sunglasses and playing with her phone, as people do.

Eleanor Yates

Eleanor Yates

With the term back in full swing, Eleanor is significantly busier than she was a few weeks ago. Her texts were brief and quick enough to come off as terse, and the truth is, by the time she gets a reminder on her phone about Serafine coming by, she has somewhat forgotten what they're supposed to be discussing.

The University of Denver is wealthy. It is full of bros. Not so long ago there were ROMNEY banners hung in some dorm windows, because a significant population of this school is Republican or Libertarian. It is a gorgeous campus, and an excellent educational institution, and is certainly old and revered in the city, state, and region. There is brick. There is copper that still gleams with newness and there is copper that has aged into the glorious green patina that it will all eventually take on. And the Sturm College of Law is not in the Sturm building (which is old and a bit dilapidated and boxy and boring and houses, naturally, the English department), but the Rickson building, which is new and gorgeous and many-windowed and stately.

There are frat houses nearby. Across the oval green there is one entrance to the bridge-building across Evans Avenue. As they pass under it Sera can see people walking to and fro through the glass of that bridge, students and grown-ups and visitors alike. Young men in suits and young men in backwards caps and cargo shorts, young women in sports uniforms and young women in Uggs drinking Pumpkin Spice Everything Oh My God. Occasionally someone who is not white, but only occasionally.

Eleanor's office is high but not so high that you know instantly that she's important. It is at the end of a hall. It's just an office, of a similar size to that of several other professors of her rank and experience.

Truth be told, Eleanor's experience as a professor isn't much at all. What prestige she has comes from her previous career.

--

Everyone stares at Sera when she gets out of the car. Even among hipsters she stands out. When she wears Chanel and sweeps her hair in such a way that the fringe is less obvious, she stands out. An aura of something strange and otherworldly follows her into the building, up the stairs, into an elevator and up. When she comes to the offices she speaks first to a secretary who serves the floor, or the wing, or what-have-you, but Eleanor isn't a big enough deal to have her own dedicated assistant.

At least not in the mundane world.

There is no waiting. Just a walk down a hall.

--

Her office is in a corner, but not a tower. It is in a row with several other offices. She is starting her third year of teaching here; no matter how many judges she's on good terms with, she does not have the prestige for something more grand. But the building is relatively new, despite the law school itself going back for a century. Her office is rather tidy and clean. The molding at the ceiling and floor is a crisp, arctic white. The walls are the blue of the deep sea or a darkening sky.

There is an L-shaped desk, arranged in such a way that when she works on her computer, her profile faces the door. When she does other things -- such as meeting with people who visit her -- she faces the door head-on. The desk is wood, and very dark. Not terribly heavy, obtrustive. There is a surprisingly light feel to everything in her office, despite the dark blue, the black desk. It's the contrast, perhaps: the stark whites, the pale greys, the hints of rubbed nickel. It has a tall window set between two bookcases, a window that faces the door and bleeds sunset light into the room at this hour.

The sun is beginning to set, and the light is searing, but the blinds are turned a bit to offset the sharpness of that light. There is a single Tiffany lamp on the corner of her desk giving a golden, unapologetically colorful light to the room. There are two chairs facing the desk, nice ones, made in the last few years but with hints of midcentury modern with contemporary design elements and comfort.

The hallway, as Sera walks down towards the half-open door, begins to feel submerged. Like stepping into a pool, slowly down, down, walking into the deep end, waiting for the air to leave completely and be replaced by water. It is not quite even fully autumn, but here it begins to feel even more like winter.

Eleanor is at her desk. Just before the door opens to allow Sera in, she lifts her eyes from what she's reading, meeting the other Disciple's eyes. She gives a faint smile. There is music playing: Iron and Wine. There is a light in her pale eyes. "Hello," she says, and despite everything else about her, there's genuine warmth in that. "Did Jeanine offer you coffee?"

Serafíne

Walking down the hallway with no coffee cup in hand, dark eyes flickering thoughtlessly over the numbers on glass and wood, variously frosted and embossed, and that sensation of being submerged, of winter. It makes her think perhaps not inexplicably of a pool in an autumn garden, turning toward winter. Leaves drifting down to the glassine surface. The water crawling up her thighs as she walks further in, a cold wind rising -

- so, a bit breathless, Serafíne, in a way that has her mouth open and her head canted and her shoulders forward. A bit startled to find herself here, knocking on the door, no secretary afterall. Just the departmental assistant who greeted her at the entrance to the wing of offices.

Sera does not expect warmth. By the time she gets to the end of the hall she is downright chilled. She expects to see her breathe when she breathes out and for the first time in ever kinda wishes that she had worn more clothes.

--

Did Jeanine offer her coffee?

Sera is kind of looking everywhere at once. The light gone brilliant against the blinds, the desk, the bookcases, the Tiffany lamp, the music.

"Heh. Yeah," a quick, darting sort of smile twists across her mouth and her shoulders curl and her heels click click click with every step she takes. Sera always conspires to make herself feel - taller, larger, something about her manner, something about the way she walks, which is not mincing as you'd expect given the heels she wears. And she has her hands in her pockets and she kind of wants a cigarette but buildings like this one have been non-smoking for years and even Sera understands that - "I'm not really a coffee girl, so I said no thanks."

- and she takes a seat in one of the reception chairs, kind of flinging herself down and taking up the insouciant sort of posture rarely seen in the School of Law, fingers laced across her bare midriff. "I'm Sera, but I guess you fucking know that. What with the fact that we had an appointment and all. You're Richard's - that a-word, right? It's good to meet you."

Eleanor Yates

For more than one mage in Denver, being with Eleanor is terrifying. They know she's on their side. They know she isn't going to hold them under a pool of water or leave them in a barren wilderness to freeze to death, but those fears rise, disconnected from her person but inextricable from her presence. She knows that she makes people uncomfortable sometimes. She knows that her magic, when she works spells of any kind, bring up primordial fears of death and dying and endings and, perhaps worst of all, the sensation of being irrevocably broken.

Perhaps that is part of why she practices compassion with as much discipline as she practices any of her other arts. Including law. Including yoga. Including killing.

Sera feels cold, because that is how Sera's mind and soul interpret the winter, and the drowning, and the sundering. It's a common reaction. That may even be why Eleanor's first question is about the secretary offering Sera something warm to drink. That may be why she has a plate of cookies sitting on the edge of her desk. They are suns and moons. They are large, puffy sugar cookies. They are thinly frosted with brightly colored glazes. They look store-bought. They aren't.

Again: discipline in all things.

"It's not very good coffee anyway," Eleanor says, with a touch of wryness. She doesn't mention the cookies, but their placement does suggest that it's a free-for-all. Have a crescent moon. Feel the flecks of pale blue frosting on your lips. Remember that once upon a time, we were all stardust. We are made of the moon; we eat the moon. We are made of the sun; one day it will obliterate the earth.

"Acarya," she fills in, the old Sanskrit rolling easily off her tongue. They have that in common, the Euthanatoi and the Ecstatics -- but truth be told, more death mages know touches of Sanskrit than cultists. Generally speaking. "Mentor is fine," she adds. And smiles. "Good to meet you too, Sera. I've heard words here and there about you, Richard going to your parties and so forth, but nothing in depth. I'm glad you wanted to meet in person, but I'm afraid --"

Her hand, slender but not as pale as one might expect with the way she feels, wafts over a few piles of folders and papers and various colors of pens. Her eyes track the motion of the hand, contemplating All That Work, What The Hell.

Eleanor's hand drops to the side. She moves gracefully. There's a level of control there, but perhaps that's just the calmness of it: she moves as though she is in water. Easy. Smooth. Her eyes, a pale blue that does not pierce, but sees the way the sky sees, come back to Sera. The wave of her hand, the fall of it, the return of her gaze: all in a matter of a second or so.

"-- I've been so busy that I've completely forgotten why you wanted to see me. I apologize; I'm not normally that disorganized."

Serafíne

Serafíne is not the sort of Ecstatic who knows Sanskrit or philosophy, not the sort of Ecstatic who practices denial, who understands the layers of theory between the many things she feels and the many things she does and the way the world finds itself expressed in her and of her and by her and through her. That is not precisely correct: she knows one word. The one that everyone who has ever taken a half-baked yoga class at the local Y knows, and she learned it from Jim.Namaste.

She has no idea what it means, or that it is derived from Sanskrit and she thinks it is like aloha - hello and goodbye - and she never, ever uses it, not even when she is 30 days sober and wasting to nothingness and Jim has decided to begin their daylong ritual with yoga at dawn with his friends in the park, because fuck if she knows shit about yoga, and it doesn't feel real or right to her.

She is the sort of Ecstatic - the sort of creature - who feels vividly the imprint of another resonance, swallows it, inhales it, feels it dissolving itself on the back of her tongue and wrapping itself around the most primitive part of her brain, its stem, and she is aware too of the disconnect between her experience of that resonance and the warmth of the environment - the Tiffany lamp, the sugar cookies - and the warmth of Eleanor's greeting.

And she is kinda listening in a way that makes one wonder if she's really paying any attention whatsoever and she is kinda still looking around more than she's looking at Eleanor and when she does Eleanor is making that gesture, you know. All that work.

It is not a claim that Sera can make and she makes a sympathetic noise but there is a mild little smirk or Sera's face because what the hell does she know about work. She woke up an hour and a half ago. Someone else made her breakfast and she's pretty sure she ate some of that breakfast. She took a bubble bath because she wanted too and now she smells like strawberries and patchouli and pot.

"You like them?" It might take Eleanor to catch on to the context of the question, but she is asking it essentially of the air and she means: them, Iron and Wine, the music playing in the background. "If you do this chick Dan's producing is playing at - what the fuck is it, that place with the patio stage. Goddamnit. Anyway, tonight. You know.

"If you're free."

A beat.

Sera looks down and away; looks again at the blinds and the way the light comes through them, weighs that sensation of warmth-from-without against the things she holds in her skin now. Gives one of this hook-shouldered shrugs that always seems to accompany the most ridiculous of her statements.

"Honestly, I don't fucking know," and this is - quiet and a bit folded and, oh reflective. Sera is aware of her breath and aware of her body and aware of these discrete sections of time in a way she does not precisely know to be meditative and sometimes she feels like there is a jewel in the center of her tongue, and sometimes she feels like that jewel is the world and she swallows it down like a seed -

That is evasive. Sera knows it is evasive. It's also true. She gives another one of those little one-shouldered shrugs and glances back up, meeting Eleanor's gaze when she says, "Elijah I guess. I mean, I feel like someone should do something, you know?

"But I don't know what the fuck to do. Dan said he thought you guys knew each other so - "

Eleanor Yates

It's funny how far removed and yet how close the traditions of the Cultists and Thanatoics are. It's as though they took a single philosophy and branched in opposite directions in terms of purpose. Neither permits stagnation, though. They all fight it. Eleanor, for all she has done and knowing they might not see it the same way, counts the Ecstatics as -- in general -- an allied force in the world.

Yes, it does take her a moment to know what Sera is talking about when she asks 'do you like them?' like that. A beat of a pause, and then a nod. She smiles. "There are many patio stages in Denver," she says, "but I'm afraid tonight I'm staying in."

Too busy. Right.

There is a pause, and Eleanor does not interrupt it. She is calm, she is so steady, she is watching Sera and waiting for Sera and she is not always so patient. Even with people in life-altering pain, Eleanor cannot always find it in herself to wait gently and smile softly while someone else Gets To The Fucking Point. Today is a good day, though. She has enough energy to get so much done. She might look up a place where some girl is playing on a patio stage and show up anyway, stay up late, enjoy the night before dreams and another damn day sap her of what she has left to give to the world. She might drink wine and dance in her living room. Go for a twilight run. She doesn't know yet. Today, after weeks of bad days, everything seems like a possibility, an option, a draw.

"I'm sure that's not true," she says, of Sera's don't-fucking-know. She says it mildly enough, but there is a vague shadow of reproach. Now, now. Don't say such things.

Elijah, she guesses. And Eleanor goes a bit still. She glances at the door, checking to confirm, again, that Sera closed it on her way in. Her eyes come back to the Ecstatic's. "When I last saw him, I informed him that it was time he had a proper teacher. He is to notify the one who has -- apparently -- been 'mentoring' him so far, and after that, he will be my responsibility. Hopefully there will be a marked improvement in his decision-making and impulse control."

She leaves that there for a few moments. It's so cut and dry. It's so... ironclad. She does not suggest that she will take over Elijah's apprenticeship if it's okay with Kalen. She doesn't mention Kalen by name. She doesn't imply that Elijah even had a choice in the matter, though that is an unintentional implication. This is the way things are now. They will get better.

Serafíne

There are a helluva lot of patio stages in Denver, but Sera can find out where. Text Dan, get an address, pass it on if Eleanor shows any interest, but Eleanor is staying in and there's a glance and these small tics and that look, see, makes Sera - briefly, keenly, entirely - aware of the near-superfluity of her ordinary life.

The creature gives this one-shouldered jerk of her shoulders that says kind: too bad and also you should come out anyway and oh hey I don't really wanna intrude you seem like a Pretty Important Person and I'm not really sure how I managed to find this office anyway kind of motion in response.

Too busy. Right.

--

Eleanor is sure that is not true and Sera is sure that it is and she is aware, you understand, of that shadow of reproach - mild as it is - aware enough that it brings her shoulders up, braced all around her spine.

A kind of wariness you understand, all liminal about her and her heart is beating and she doesn't precisely remember why.

"Oh." Sera says, and her voice is quiet. It is not timid - nothing about her could be timid, but she's watching Eleanor and listening to Eleanor and you know, Eleanor doesn't mention Kalen by name, and she doesn't imply that Elijah had a choice and Sera is on the cusp and she hears that solidity, the goddamned resolve and all she seems capable of doing with it in just that moment is to breathe out and say, "Okay."

And, "Uhm, cool," a moment later.

Eleanor Yates

Eleanor's eyebrows lift a bit. "Are you all right?" The concern, which is what it is, sounds genuine.

Serafíne

"I'm cool." Sera's half-smile is both quick and quicksilver; it appears and then: disappears quite as quickly as it came. And the way it fades.

"It's just - " And here Sera looks down, and you know she is Thinking because her rather straight brown brows have drawn themselves together over her dark eyes and her mouth is all seamed and she is tasting the words on her tongue and weighing and measuring them and she takes in a breath and offers Eleanor another one of those one-shouldered shrugs. " - you didn't say Kalen's name. You know?

"Elijah's cool with it. Right?"

Eleanor Yates

"I wasn't sure if you knew him, or that he had been Elijah's mentor," Eleanor explains, "and I didn't want to speak ill of him to a stranger if you didn't."

She gives a small shrug. "At first, Elijah insisted he'd just been a bad student. But when I openly said that I thought I should take over his apprenticeship, he said he would tell Kalen as soon as possible. That made me hesitate, so I asked him if it's what he wanted."

Eleanor gives a small shake of her head. "I don't think Elijah knows yet what he wants, or even who he is. He wants badly to please people: to be a good student, to regain my trust, to not hurt feelings, to help this friend, Alicia. And making life-altering decisions because you 're seeking approval and belonging is usually a way to make incredibly poor decisions. The sort that land him in the situations he keeps running into, where every mistake that puts other people's lives and sanity at risk is justified by his good intentions. At least when he's faced with the choice to begin with.

"Elijah and I discussed it. And I told him that from what I know of him, he would be better suited to the Ecstatic or Thanatoic path than the Hermetic, but that in the meantime, what he needs most is a firmer hand." She waves her hand, first palm down and then sideways and up, like a turning wave, rolling, rolling. "He expressed concerns, we talked about what it would be like, Richard explained his experience with me, and Elijah agreed that he would speak with Kalen about ending his apprenticeship. That was a week ago, so I've been planning on checking in with him again soon."

She watches Sera for a bit. "What are your thoughts on it? As far as someone doing something about Elijah?"

Serafíne

"Heh." Sera inserts, quietly you see, but with an evident humor that suggests that whatever was slowly winding up inside her has - eased, in the strangest of ways. The edge of her sudden smile, the surety of it, even though she's sitting in the reception seat in her fishnets and cutoffs worming her fingers through the marching diamonds of the pattern like a deliquent called in to the principal's office. Charming, that smile, and self-aware in a way that is hard to measure. "I know pretty much everybody."

The smile fades somewhat; it has gone so strangely tender, as Eleanor lays out the course of her conversation with Elijah. Sera is still working her thumb through the frame of her fishnets and fiddling with the weave and watching the fibers against her dark-red nailpolish, which is peeling a bit, which is probably as much a fashion statement as anything else. And Sera is thinking of Elijah, who wants to please and that awareness clicks home inside her like a key in a lock, and she is half-thinking about herself, and the mistakes that were bleak enough that she has never chosen to turn around and look back at them.

"He always seemed like an Ecstatic to me. That's why I told Dan to look in on him when I went to Paris. Told him to take Elijah out to see Jim, too, but I guess Jim's still - incommunicado or what the fuck ever. Which sucks because Jim would dig him, I think.

"He's good with shit like that. I mean, thinking and people and shit. Teaching. He's good at that too.

"I mean I didn't have any thoughts, except, you know. Why the fuck's he acting like this and, you know, how the hell do you instill a healthy amount of self and community preservation in him without paralyzing him with fear, cos I sure as fuck don't wanna do that either.

"It sounds like you've got it pretty well in hand, though. I guess that's what I think."

Eleanor Yates

"That doesn't surprise me," Eleanor says, with a touch of bemusement at the edges of her tone. She watches Sera's face, more than anything. Watches her eyes and not what her hands do, what she wears. She, in her linen and silk blends, doesn't seem to notice that Sera is dressed differently than herself at all, much less most people on campus.

She gives Sera a slow nod when Sera says he seems Ecstatic. It's no surprise that she agrees. She doesn't defend her thought that he has it in him to be a Euthanatos, or argue that he should be. It isn't about should. And she doesn't interrupt to tell Sera that she doesn't know who 'Jim' is. Eleanor, unlike Sera, doesn't know everybody. Isn't inclined to find them all. Accepts that this 'Jim' may have become a bit of a hermit, the way good teachers often do. Her eyes don't widen or flutter at the swearing.

Eleanor is not squeamish. About much of anything, really.

"Well, you don't do it with fear at all," she says thoughtfully. More: mindfully. "Self preservation is more difficult for Elijah, I think, because his focus is so external." Of course: pleasing people, saving people, helping people, without turning it back on himself. "But he is also intrinsically compassionate. That is a gift: he will not have to learn it, only defend against unlearning it. What he needs is greater self-knowledge and empowerment. When he understands -- deeply -- that he has the power to hurt as well as heal, that all the good intentions in the world do not guarantee that his actions will harm none, and if he can truly see that the capacity to injure does not negate the capacity to comfort, I think he will be able to shoulder his duty to the community, and to the world."

She is quiet for a moment. "With Elijah, the danger is less that he will be paralyzed by fear of external dangers. I think that facing his mistakes and their impact on others could cause him to tailspin into self-recrimination: 'I can't do anything right', 'I mess up everything I touch', and so on." Eleanor gives a small shake of her head. "That's actually one of the reasons I think he needs a 'firm hand' right now, so to speak. Someone to shoulder the responsibility of his mistakes with him, of course, but also someone who will call bullshit when necessary."

Serafíne

Sera isn't the sort of creature one would expect to be bashful. She's burning, isn't she? Somehow she is always on fire. Look at the way she's dressed to come here. "Up," or something, her version of formal which means that she has slung her very nice Chanel bag with a chain across her body and paired golden pearls with the bicycle chain she often wears as a necklace or bracelet and she is aware that she doesn't really belong in the daylight, in an office, with a degreed and credentialed stranger speaking with her so thoughtfully and mindfully and soberly, as if she might have something intelligent to say right back.

Oh, look. Here is a string, a fault in the pattern, a broken weft in the weave.

But listen. She does listen. Quixotic and shifting, consideration a tender sort of bruise on her face, meeting Eleanor's eyes only rarely, but in those moments so directly as to be breathtaking. Head canted aslant like that might help the words go in better and maybe it does.

The last bit - someone to shoulder the responsibility of his mistakes with him - brings tears, sudden and unbidden, to Sera's eyes. None spill over her lashes. There is just the damp brightness of her gaze, sudden and direct, the spike of something lancing beneath her breastbone. An echo she's never heard before.

The rasp of her breath in her throat.

"You really know what you're doing, don't you?" Quiet, this. With such a soft little smile.

Eleanor Yates

Eleanor -- so calm, so steady, so clear in her thoughts and speech -- is not the sort of person one would expect to be ruthless. To be violent. To be vengeful. To have gone utterly, soul-rendingly mad. But she has. And that is how she knows that no one is what you expect them to be. She has known another person more deeply than anyone can hope to know someone, and that is how she knows: you can always be surprised by someone. Anyone.

There are tears in Sera's eyes, and Eleanor does not react like so many. No oh shit face. No confusion. Not even a question. Not a quirk. She doesn't move tissues closer to Sera; Sera will reach for them if she wants, perhaps.

What she says, though, that makes Eleanor laugh softly. "I've had a lot of experiences. I've been Elijah. And much, much worse." She shakes her head slightly, gives a faint shrug. "That is all I know."

Serafíne

Sera doesn't reach for the tissues. She seems the sort to let her tears fall and wipe them away with the back of her wrist, with the tail of her flannel shirt, or something equally and elegantly gauche. She would if she wanted but she doesn't want them and anyway, today the sudden brightness of her tears remains unshed, nothing more than a gleaming film across the surface of her eyes.

She does sniff a bit. That's involuntary but it doesn't sound like a sniffle precisely.

The tender edge of her small smile curls, becomes somehow both more private and more public.

"Cool." Sera is: gathering herself up, but she means that cool. Whatever was unsettled about her moments ago has shifted beneath her skin and she means it, her voice all warm and perhaps a bit oddly reflective, or perhaps refractive. Her fingers are still tangled in the weave of her fishnets even as she stands, biting her lip. "It sounds like he's in really good hands."

And, a moment later -

"When I figure out where that show is tonight, I'll text you. That way you can drop by if you feel like it. Now that you're in my phone you'll probably get an invite every time we throw a party, you'd be welcome there, too.

"Richard knows where my place is."

Eleanor Yates

Eleanor just smiles. The truth is, she knows cool from the lips of a Cultist the way she knows their tears and their Code and the fact that they are not lazy runaways. She has been Elijah, and vaguely remembers it; that's true. It is also true that she has been Sera. She has been herself, always, in many forms, with many mistakes.

She does not confirm or wave away Sera's suggestion of what sort of hands Elijah might be in. She just gives that small, thoughtful smile. "Thank you, Sera," she says, regarding the text, the future invites, the show.

Eleanor nudges the plate of big, soft, fluffy sugar cookies towards the edge of her desk. They are iced: white stars, blue moons, yellow suns. "Have a cookie."

Serafíne

Have a cookie. Eleanor says.

Sera takes two.

Of course she does: one sun and one star, no moons. Naturally she gravitates toward the things that burn.

Holds them both up, you know, in salute.

"Cheers - "

And turns around and ambles out the door, biting one of the points off the edge of a star.

Delicious.

Alicia

This is where she comes after she gets off the light rail from Littleton.

She could have just taken the light rail from Littleton back to Cherry Hills Village. It would have taken the same amount of time. Instead she took the light rail from Littleton up to downtown Denver and now she either has to get her ass back to the station before 7pm or call Collins to come get her. Or find a place to crash for the night.

Alicia does not do so hot thinking longterm. Right now she's walking into a bar near the metro station looking distracted but not miserable. Like she's got a lot on her mind and is in here to relax.

They have a bocce ball court. That isn't why she's here. She's here because she doesn't feel like walking all over the goddamn city.

Serafíne

The Matchbox is slow on a Monday night everyplace is slow on a Monday night Monday nights are tragic. People are recovering from the weekend and plunging back into work, trying to get back on track with deadlines and assignments and the rest of the usual bullshit that does not impact Serafíne in the least. She has neither a job nor a schedule and she's kinda waiting for Rick to get off work at the toystore then they're gonna walk home or does she even remember that he told her this morning that his shift was gonna end early and what the hell -

there's a bocce ball court on the back patio, and they're playing Andrew Bird (If your loose and libel lips/Keep sinking all my ships/ Then you're the one who sank my Lusitania / But some how it don't register as pain at all/Till it finds your crooked vein) on the sound system and it is piped onto the back patio and as Alicia walks in to The Matchbox she might maybe feel something familiar, which is to say: gut-wrenching and compelling and stripped of definitions and on-the-verge, that between feeling, that sense of some goddamned threshold.

Sera is whistling along and laughing over the strange things one has to do to make a whistle with a tall tattooed guy and a girl with dreadlocks and they're gonna go do whatever now 'cos they are NPCs and anyway Sera is excusing herself to go intercept Alicia as Alicia walks in.

"Hey, Alicia. What the hell are you doing here. Wanna beer?"

Alicia

"Yeah I want a beer," she says with a lopsided smile. "You buying?"

Of course Sera's buying. Sera is the gregarious one with a house and funds and friends. She could pay for it herself but she isn't going to turn down a beer if someone else is offering it. Up to the bar they go and she offers whatever seasonal ale they have on draft. She isn't the world's biggest pumpkin fan but she won't turn down a good Oktoberfest.

Once she has her drink she hops up onto the stool so she can be somewhat at eye-level with the Cultist and her crazy heels.

"So... I was at the library and I didn't want to go back to the ranch just yet. Are you heading back there tonight?"

This is a gateway to her asking for a ride. Look everyone. Alicia can be taught.

Serafíne

So Alicia gets an Oktoberfest and Sera has a bottle of something (it is a sour ale that tastes like sour cherry juice) in her right hand and she rests it on the bartop and of course she's buying and of course people come to see what the fuck she wants when she wants it, and she's about to order another but - "What the fuck is the Rumchata by Elvis - " gets a brief sketch of an explanation from the 'tender and Sera flashes the chick a grin, " - but make mine a goddamned double, cool?"

--

"Why, you need a ride? Sure, I can take you home. One way or another, we'll get you there."

Alicia

And Alicia is content to sit and watch the happenings between Sera and her friends. She's too young to be in here anyway but if she were by herself she has a document that serves as proof that the bartender can serve her. Nobody has asked for an ID in here for weeks. They're good judges of character. They can smell a cop from a block away.

After the conversation she had with Hawksley the other night she isn't going to mince words. Doesn't matter if she needs a ride or doesn't need a ride. If she could make it out there just fine with her feet. Alicia gives Sera a smile and lifts her beer in a toast.

"Thanks, girl," she says.

Serafíne

Alicia's beer comes back quick. Sera's bizarre drink concoction takes much longer and requires the use of a blender and the peeling of a banana and Sera's friends - the folks from the bocce ball court - wander back in and they're heading out, she'll see them around, and the truth is she just met them tonight and cannot really remember their names except with magic but they're already in her phone and they'll probably show up to her next party, like they've been part of the crowd all along.

When Alicia lifts her beer in toast Sera tips out the base of her own bottle and clinks, see. Chiming. The noise feels right and there's a bit of weight behind it and she takes one last sip and tells Alicia, "You should try this, it tastes like a sour cherry pie. It's brilliant - " when the bartender brings back her Rumchata by Elvis concoction and presents it with all due fanfare and Sera admires it as is only right and proper and leans herself against the bar, all hipslung and sort of gives the bartender a look when she seems inclined to linger close and make conversation and sends her back to the other end of the bar.

"All that library shit," Sera is savoring her drink now. Swirling her straw through its striations. " - you're gonna go blind." A quiet little smirk that blooms and recedes just as easily as it comes on. "Seriously, though. You settling in? Getting on out there?"

Alicia

"I thought it was masturbating that'd make you go blind."

That isn't an evasion. There's room for bantering a bit before Sera says she's serious and wants to know how she's settling in. Alicia shrugs and considers the row of bottles and the glass behind them before she looks back at Sera.

"It's alright. I'm used to staying in motel rooms, so the space is a little..." She chews her lip. Swallows down whatever else she might have said that. "Overwhelming. Sometimes. I'm not going anywhere though."

Serafíne

"The nuns used to tell us that shit. Not in so many words, mind - they'd be all evasive and call it self-abuse, but whatever. Unless your kinks involve razor blades and soft tissues - "

And Sera is still playing with her drink. Pulling the straw through the murk, pulling it out. Licking off the whipped cream and marveling over the whole of the concoction. And still, you understand, her eyes are dark and are quick on Alicia's countenance. There is lip chewing and swallowing-down and it doesn't feel like evasion but something else and Sera's smile - the curve of her mouth - is in that moment so exquisitely tender, so markedly gentle that it doesn't seem like the expression belongs anywhere close to the countenance of a girl like her.

"You need anything. Or, I don't know, just want to get out and go shopping or what the fuck ever, you let me know. Cool?"

Serafíne

Also PER + AWARENESS AS EMPATHY how you feel?

Alicia

There's something she isn't telling Sera and it has to do with the present for a change instead of the past. But the past is going to cast a pall over her until she is truly over what happened to her and her father. She may never be over it. Hard to get over something like that. Life will go on and she will have good days and she will have great days and there may be days when she doesn't think of it at all. Whatever she swallowed down was not like that.

It's going to take some time before she trusts herself or the people around her enough to talk about the good things she remembers about her father. Before she can talk about her Awakening or the abduction. They have some time. Probably not as much as they'd like.

In the Alicia looks at Sera for a few moments and then smiles. It's a sad smile. She's tired. Maybe she's gone lonely on them.

"That..." And she sounds hopeful just before she decides if she's going to commit to this or not. She decides. She smiles. "Yeah. Cool. What are you doing tomorrow?"

Alicia

[IDK where that sentence was going but get rid of the "In the" in the first sentence of the third paragraph.]

Serafíne

"Whatever the fuck I want."

So says Sera, and she says it with a curving mouth and just enough surety that no one could ever disbelieve her. That is, after all, what she does almost every night and that is the way she likes to live her life. Whatever the fuck she wants.

"You wanna hit the Buffalo Exchange? Or do you have something else in mind?" There is a beat; Sera takes a sip of her drink. It is insanely ridiculously delicious and she makes such a face - bliss, you understand - and then she exhales and opens her eyes and says, a bit more quietly, nudging one of Alicia's feet with her own. "Something else going on? I mean, it's cool if you don't wanna talk, but it felt like there was something else you were gonna say, there. You know?"

Alicia

The fact that Sera notices and wants to know more makes Alicia smile a conciliatory smile. She rocks a bit with the collision exaggerated because Sera did not nudge her that hard. Just an acknowledgment. She is not trying to close herself off.

"Nothing," she says with a scoff. If it weren't nothing Sera would not have noticed. "Sorry, I don't want to talk about it. It's about Hawksley. It really is nothing, I just... you know, he... misread something I'd said, and we were shitty at each other for a minute and I started crying and it was super awkward. We're okay now. Please don't say anything to him. It's just hard, you know, adjusting. I'm..."

Just say it Alicia. Nobody's going to think you're being a baby.

"I miss my dad."

Alright. Congratulations. You're an adult. Drink your beer.

Serafíne

"Can I give you a hug?"

Alicia

Her eyes immediately well up. She grits her teeth and swallows and they even out though they still shine. The breath she blows out her nostrils is heavy and hot. Sera can see her thinking about it.

Alicia takes another bracing slug of her beer and quick-nods her head with her jaws still clenched.

Serafíne

So Sera hugs her. Sera is warm and she smells like cloves and cinnamon and PEANUT BUTTER BANANA ALCOHOLIC MILKSHAKES and she is lean and quick and her arms are wrapping around Alicia and she is cupping the back of the other girl's skull with a tender hand and pressing her mouth to Alicia's temple, humming a bit, against her skin.

"I'm glad you guys are okay, now."

Quiet, this. Sera's breath warm and her awareness humming and her mouth curving in a quick-ling sort of smile that Alicia can feel rather than see, soft against her skin. Everything about the gesture is tender, and also somehow strangely respectful - of whatever boundaries Alicia might have, and of her grief and her right to it. Sera does not want any of these things to go away. What she is saying, with her body rather than her mouth, is not: don't be sad. But rather: you can be sad. I'll be right here.

It is such a hard thing to be human.

To be human and to endure loss, to live with it. To leave someone behind and relegate them to history. To wake without -

"And I know you miss your dad."

It lasts as long or as briefly as Alicia desires, that hug. The cradle of her hand. As long or as briefly as Alicia desires, and then Sera is pulling away, planting a kiss in the center of the other girl's forehead, the third eye though Sera does not know this, does not know any of these things, and Sera buys Alicia another drink and then suggests that they go elsewhere, she got a text from so-and-so who suggested the Thin Man, has Alicia been there?

Before the night ends, Sera gives Alicia both: her cell number and her address, just in case she needs either. And Sera can stay out as long as she wants or as briefly as she needs, one way or the other, by the end of the night, Sera returns Alicia to Hogwarts.

Home.

What's good for you.

Elijah

[Did I survive tonight?]

Elijah

Dice: 4 d10 TN7 (4, 6, 7, 8) ( success x 2 )

Elijah

Elijah had called before he came, being aware enough that you can't just show up at people's places at random.

He owed Sera an apology.

Fuck, he owed Dan an apology more than anything. Dan, who had taken time to explain what was going on. Dan, who spent his time trying to piece out to the apprentice how everything was interconnected and how his actions impacted others and how the web moved and water rippled. Dan, who had told him that he couldn't do this, and he did it anyway.

Elijah needed to apologize to Sera, yes, for all the things that she had done for him and all the wrongs he may have committed, but he needed to apologize to Dan too, because Dan? Dan was right. He didn't realize how right Dan was until he found himself faced with the prospect of dealing with his own actions and all these thoughts made for terrible driving. Elijah was lucky he didn't get a ticket. he was lucky for a lot of reasons.

So we were here, with a young man in a vest on a porch, ready to knock on the front door to herald his arrival, but not knowing what to do, wanting the courage to do something. To say something. He lacked that conviction, and waited until that conviction came to him.

Knock knock. Knock knock knock.

Serafíne

Elijah imagines that you can't just show up at people's places at random, but that isn't really true when it comes to 719 or 743 or whatever the hell the house number is for Dee's blond-brick four-square home on a certain treelined street (CORONA) in Cap Hill. There's an oak tree in the front shading the garden that someone loved, once, and a unicycle on the porch, and an old beanbag bottomed ashtray on one of tha capstones and three metal porch chairs, each painted a different color (one polka-dotted) and a porch swing and the remnants of a pizza box and the recycle bins and a windowbox full of herbs and this afternoon's mail and the mailbox decorated with a ridiculous number of stickers, and on and on and on.

And Elijah also does not understand this: that the house on Corona Street is one where people just walk the fuck in.

Hardly anybody knocks.

Well, mostly mages.

Maybe they're too timid, maybe they're too polite.

---

Rick answers the front door. He's the fourth housemate, mousey compared to the rest, the drummer, who has had a half-dozen jobs since the group relocated from North Carolina to Denver, and who, like the rest of them (all but Sera: she did not go to college) has a completely useless liberal arts degree from an excellent university that does him precisely no good but what the hell, he's having fun.

They exchange pleasantries. Elijah asks after Serafíne and learns that she is in the back garden. He's directed through the house - Rick actually leads him to the white kitchen and offers him a beer or something before pointing out the glass sliders leading to the garden.

And there, sitting crossed legged on her cabana bed on the flagstone patio in the middle of the garden is one Sera, smoking a clove cigarette, doodling in a leatherbound volume open between her knees.

She glances up as the doors open. See Elijah. Smiles. Waves.

Elijah

She sees him. She smiles. And waves.

And he's confused, because for some reason he expected her to be furious with him. For some reason, he expected a lot of people to be furious with him and his approach isn't skid dish but he'd had the confidence to knock on a door nobody in their right mind knocks on, so what harm could it be to just waltz over to that bed, right? Right?

Of course right. She smiled. And waved. And therefore had not determined Elijah to be persona non grata in her house.

"Seriously," he started, "your house is freaking awesome."

he's got a beer now, probably the first beer he's had in awhile, what with staying at who-the-fuck-knows where he's staying these days.

Serafíne

"I know," says Sera, exhaling a stream of spiced smoke from the left corner of her rather crawling mouth. Her house is amazing. It takes like her, it feels like her, it belongs to someone else but is entirely wrapped up in around and by and for Serafíne in a way few people can understand. There are pleasures upon pleasures to be found within: works of passion and art and strange things and found treasures layered over the gentle accumulation of another lifetime: old family heirlooms (not her own) and worn and threadbare Persian silk rugs, black and white photographs and secondhand leather jackets and figurines with apple-y handpainted cheeks and mardi-gras beads and weed and fresh-baked bread and every hallucinogen you can wrap your head around and a few you can't.

Sera's house is amazing.

And Sera knows it.

--

And Elijah certainly doesn't know Sera if he thinks he is going to be persona non grata at her house. If he thinks that there is anyone in the world aside from actual murderers and active jerks who would not be welcomed there.

He eyes are on him the whole time he crosses the garden to her, though. Alert in a way they sometimes are not, following his progress with a gentle sort of precision until he's close.

She is still smiling. Up at him, golden head tipped back, tattoed hands folded neatly in her lap, a pen in one. She was writing, or perhaps scribbling, something in that book, but it is closed now.

"Grab a seat. What's up?"

Elijah

Now, Elijah is not, nor has he ever been, a legitimate ax murderer nor has he been an active jerk at this juncture. Not even a passive jerk, just… well… a little bit all over the place over the past month. His hands are in his pockets and his posture is relaxed now. Relaxed because when he inhales there is air and when he exhales there is not and he could do it again and again and take in a different smell every time.

He takes a seat on the ground, because when given the opportunity he was always on the ground. Knees up, elbows rested comfortably there and his hands clasped in front of him. What was up?

"I wanted to apologize for all the shit I've done recently… like… not listening to you or Pan or Dan or Kalen, or potentially putting you guys in danger, because even though I didn't want that, it's a possibility and I don't know if saying sorry counts for anything, but i'm sorry."

He sounds genuine enough, looks at her face and her eyes and her smile and her posture and takes in those details, too. Elijah is present today, he was present yesterday. he will be present tomorrow.

Serafíne

Elijah how are you feeling? Per + Awareness-as-empathy

Elijah

This. Has been. A HORRIBLE week. An incredibly grounding week, but it has been horrible none the less. He's had to give people bad news, he's been chewed out, and he's half expecting people to cut their losses with him and just sort of forego having anything to do with him for their own safety's sake. There's a BIT of damaged confidence there, and a lot of his eager puppy-ness has been successfully knocked out of him for the time beingif there's anything else, you can totally ask.Because with six successes, she knows Elijah better than Elijah knows Elijah

Serafíne

Serafíne, you see, she exhales. It sounds like a sigh, though it is not. She is really quite a compact creature, and she is dressed down tonight, spare shoulders framed in a cotton t-shirt, her hair atangled at the ends and still a bit damp around her shoulders. Her mouth is not painted red tonight, but you better believe she is still wearing eye liner and masacara, dark around her dark eyes.

The closed book is set aside. The pen - it has a nib - atop it.

And Sera gets to be taller than Elijah because he is sitting on the ground at the edge of her cabana bed, rather than one of the chairs a bit farther off. The flagstones are damp and still warm from the sun, but the sun itself is setting earlier and earlier these days.

And Sera studies Elijah with her dark dark eyes and her illuminating, half-illuminated little smile, listening to him, feeling him, you understand. His frustration and his fear and his deflation and all of it.

"I don't think that any of the people you mentioned would cut ties with you because maybe you had a brush with the techs. I'm pretty sure they already know who I am from last year, though maybe they 'lost' the file.

"Elijah, Pan and me, and Jim too, for that matter - we put everything on the line to save a sixteen year old girl from the techs and the Nephandi. Do you really think we'd give up on you because you had a brush with them?

"I just - " and then Sera sighs. She doesn't know what to say. She's wrapped up in Elijah's turmoil the way she gets, looking mildly distressed and also Being an Adult is Hard. " - I know you mean it, yeah? But you sound more like the kid who got caught than someone - I mean, I'm figuring you probably aren't going to exchange emails with a tech operative again.

"But maybe it's something else next time. Maybe it's scarier. Maybe things go really wrong, you know?"

Elijah

"I seem more like a kid who got aught then someone who has actually learned the over aching lesson of what all of this was supposed to be teaching?" he asks for clarification. Like he need clarification. he asked, because he needed to know if he followed correctly, if he had the right message, if he was getting what he needed to get out of this.

It's a lesson he's needed to learn. She'd told him not to be foolish once, when he'd been concerned for that young man who nearly died all bloody and scared in Sera's arms, that man she'd saved from the brink of death while someone literally tried to eat the poor guy alive. That could have gone horribly. That could have been a disaster, and had he learned then to slow himself? To not get over eager?

"i want to say I'll know better next time something happens, but I honestly can't promise that. I… I don't slow down, and I don't know what I'm supposed to be doing."

Serafíne

"I don't give a fuck about over arching lessons, man." Elijah is asking for clarification about What He Should Take From All That and Sera isn't the sort for aphorisms or lessons. "And I don't need you to apologize to me, and I don't want you to pledge that you're always going to make the right decision, because most of the time that doesn't happen, or there are a half-dozen right decisions.

"I guess I just want you to, fuck it, find a way to insert another level of questioning into your decision making, you know? Not just, you know, I am trying to help someone and therefore my good intentions justify everything, but like - how will this impact me, and everyone.

"I don't even know if I'm making sense. I don't know how to tell you what I'm trying to say but listen, you're kinda like a kid right now, learning how to walk. Sometimes we all are. Before you faceplant, you've gotta reach out and grab a hand.

"Far as I'm concerned, the only person you really need to apologize to is Alicia. But if it still matters to you, you're fucking forgiven.

"I talked to Eleanor, you know."

Elijah

"What did you talk to Eleanor about?" he asked, though, "because Eleanor and I had a conversation about my education and I kinda need to know if that's what we're gonna talk about. That was… that was really fucking intense."

Serafíne

"We talked about you." Sera, quiet. Her voice musical, as it is, inflected and lovely and - oh, circumflex, in a sense. She rests her cheek on the palm of her hand, fingers splayed over the shaved fringe of her hair, looking down at Elijah rather like a reclining and all-too-human goddess. This small, perhaps sad, smile etched into her mouth.

"I didn't know what to do about you.

"I think she does."

Elijah

"She's really solid," he said, "I… I don't know what to tell Kalen, though. I mean, we talked about it. I went through it in my head, and … it never comes out right."

It comes down to Kalen. He does not yet know that he is going to have this conversation with Kalen, that he will cave on his resolve and his intention to study with Eleanor and go back to him. He does not yet know that he'll go weak at the words I trust you because, at that juncture, he didn't trust himself. Didn't know if he should. At that moment, he was tired. His elbows rested on his knees and he couldn't have been comfortable there, but he was more comfortable rooted on the ground than anywhere else.

"I really respect Eleanor... I want her to trust me."

Serafíne

w"That's not really what you need, you know. Eleanor's trust. Anyone's trust. You shouldn't be trusted - not with magic, or life and death. I trust your desire and your compassion and I trust your joy, all of that shit, but I sure as hell don't trust your understanding of chance or your ability to pull yourself back from the brink of death or your judgment when faced with a situation that you mostly cannot fathom. Right?"

There's a curl to her half-smile, like paper caught to flame, and an edge of something in her eyes.

"What you need - more than Eleanor's trust - is her willingness to question you. That's what you need from everyone, and from yourself. Someone who's gonna ask you why and wherefore and question you and make you question yourself, maybe even when they're not standing right beside you. Someone that you can query, someone who'll call you out and stand beside you even while they're doing that.

"You get that, right? You've seen what I can do, haven't you? The power that you are going to someday, maybe, wield, is greater than you can know right now.

"And that's why you need someone to question you, until you learn how to question yourself. You know?"

Elijah

there are things that can be said about power. Power and responsibility. And what he has and has not absorbed. He has not learned to question himself yet. He needs someone who will question him, who will teach him to have better judgment or to use the sense he was born with until he can remember that he needs to do it on his own.

He gets that, right? He nods, he nods because he does get it. Because he is listening, because he wants things to make sense and he actually cares about whatever it is Sera has to say, because wielding the kind of power she has seems like such a distant possibility that he can't imagine ever being anything other than he is now, he can't imagine transcending those types of barriers. he doesn't realize that this is another obstacle to overcome, that he could well be his own worst enemy in this regard.

"And you think she'll question me? Would she be better for me than Kalen? I don't know… I just… I think he's trying."

Serafíne

"You've gotta figure that out for yourself. But thus far, it doesn't seem like the little Kalen has kept out of the goddamned weeds. You know?

"I like Kalen, and I don't know what you guys have done or what you haven't done. But we've got a helluva lot of apprentices running around learning shit and fucking up, and you're the only one I'm this concerned.

"So think about it. In the meantime, let's order pizza and get stoned."

Matchmaking.

Hawksley

Ever since that evening that he ran into Kalen and Sera and met Alicia in the park, Hawksley has had a transient sort-of living at his place. And other than the touch of her resonance here and there throughout the house, the way he is tuned into it more keenly than he might be to some others, he could go plenty of that time without knowing whether she is there or whether she has gone. On occasion, when he isn't sure if she's around and wants to make sure she doesn't futz with something he's in the middle of, he's put tangible wards on his altars.

Something moved will, moments later, simply shift back into place where it was. It's not like he couldn't just use a post-it note, but this seems more efficient to him. The No Touchy, Apprentice rote.

Collins takes care of the girl here and there, as he would with any guest. Collins knows when people are around and where they are and tries to anticipate their needs as best he can. Hawksley has more needs -- and demands -- than young Miss Romero, anyway.

Tonight, though, Alicia is off in one room or another, or sleeping, or in the library. And Hawksley is in the courtyard as the sun sets, seated at the little table where he often takes breakfast, and across from him is another chair, and in that chair is Serafine, one of the only people who is as regally, naturally comfortable in his home as he is. At least: that is how he sees it.

Between them are the remnants of a bottle of wine and a sumptuous meal. Between them is a half-eaten dessert, cold and bittersweet and smooth, eaten from long spoons. Hawksley, dressed casually, finishes his current glass and sets it down, watching her from across the table. A breeze moves the boughs of the courtyard's tree overhead. Drowsily, he sighs, and says:

"You should sit on my lap."

Serafíne

Collins was spared the very awful question of how to approach a young lady and sort-of guest-in-the-house about the fact that she hasn't changed clothes (and likely underthings!) in upwards of three days quite nearly a week and a half-ago when Sera nipped up to the house with armfuls of shopping bags of gently used or absolutely new things. Enough for a week, maybe enough for forever, given the efficiency with which Collins runs the household. A day or so late, Alicia was also supplied with a Sera-picked bikini, and maybe even a goddamned tennis skirts (Sera makes fun of them, but we would lay odds that she actually secretly loves tennis skirts) so that she could take full advantage of the grounds.

This weekend Sera wandered into a karaoke bar which was WEIRD and went camping and dusted her hands with chalk and climbed boulders until her fingers were raw and fell off them onto a makeshift crash pad and this morning she was savoring the lingering remnants of those wounds and now she is here and she is healed and instead of cargo shorts and an old PIXIES t-shirt she's wearing thigh-high black stockings and her garters with a few inches of creamy skin between the tops of the stockings and the tiny little ruched satin skirt she has paired with them and a nude-and-black lace blouse from which the modesty mesh has been torn because what the hell is the point of the illusion of nudity and she likes the and her hair is golden, washed and blown out and curled and drifting over her shoulders and it is sun set and the sun sets earlier these late summer nights, and earlier and earlier, which makes it even more necessary to squeeze all of the late summer sweetness out of the late summer days and she's wearing sunglasses and the dying sun paints a crimson splash of light across the lenses and her head is cheated toward him and he tells her that she should sit on his lap,

and that makes her makes her smile.

And she inhales, Sera, like she is pulling the idea-of-it into her and she likes the idea-of-it she always likes the idea-of-it so she takes her sunglasses off and she stands up and toes on her heels and circles the table, fingertips trailing on the discrete and lovely linens, and steps out of her heels and sits in his lap, facing him. His hands probably go to the place where her ass meets her thighs, to balance her there.

Her own hands go to his temples.

Still smiling, she kisses him, slow.

Then breaks the kiss, and just contemplates him, before she asks - "You like having Alicia here, don't you?"

Hawksley

Collins, thankfully, was going to wait until Alicia brought it up, or until Hawksley complained about it. Alicia was, at least, bathing. Collins, thankfully, does not concern himself with the underthings of his guests, only their comfort. It would be easier if Alicia actually used a bedroom instead of staying up all night in the library, then he could simply lay out pajamas for her and launder her sundress in the meantime but noooo.

Teenagers.

He has half-raised one already, that was enough.

--

Sera brought clothes. Some time later, Sera was invited -- by Hawksley -- to dinner. In. He doesn't know about injuries or bouldering the way he doesn't know what Alicia gets up to when she is not immediately in his perception and the way he doesn't know many, many things about people's lives when they are existing out of his immediate orbit. Collins, like Dan, keeps track of Ginger for Hawksley. Hawksley, unlike Sera, cares about far less that goes on, so he hears less.

He smiles. He invites, and she removes her shades and comes over and sits on him. His smile widens, as it does, lopsided and curving and wicked as he is. He does cup her beneath her upper thighs. He squeezes. He draws her a bit closer, and lifts his chin as she is touching his temples.

He cannot see the future, but he knows she's going to kiss him. His hands flex on her again, then smooth, up and down and back, settling. He breathes in slow exhale when she draws back. It was not an urgent kiss, no deep and devouring thing. He is not hungry. He is lazy and he is thoughtful and he is,

and she can tell this, the way she can tell anything about him it seems,

adoring.

--

The smile falters, as does a bit of the laziness and at least the expression of adoration in his eyes if not the adoration itself. He blinks, only because he was not expecting that. But he ponders it, unbothered, and nods. "Very much," he tells her. He does not bother to hedge. He does not bother to downplay, to gloss over. Glossing over would be his only hope, against Sera.

And not just because she sees through souls the way she does. In part, it's just Hawksley. He knows he cannot lie to her. The difference about Sera is that in this, he has no real inclination to try.

Hawksley's nostrils flare a bit as he inhales. He leans back in his chair, which is light and foldable but wooden, painted white, cushioned with orange. It's not the sturdiest place to have her perched atop him, but his legs are braced and the chair can hold their weight. For now.

"What made you ask that?" he wants to know, drawing her closer. Not to plant her right on his lap, here, let's do things other than talking, words are stupid. It's almost as though he wants to hold her, suddenly.

Serafíne

A neat little shrug is Hawksley's first answer to his question, and it means in part, I don't know, but it also means, more than that, that Sera is alive and aware of herself and aware of her body and has decided to take pleasure in every movement of her body the way she so often does,

especially when he is near, but just as Sera does not bother to lie to her, or to downplay, or to gloss over some things, well, Sera knows better than to tell him I don't know and to expect Hawksley to accept that as an answer to nearly any question he might ask, and he pulls her closer not in a way that says now but in a way that says something else and that something else makes her heart catch beneath her breastbone in a way that is both very very strange and very very present and it makes her breath catch, too.

And Sera kisses him again.

Not his mouth, his temple, and her own mouth opens as she feels the beat of his pulse and thinks about his mind inside his skull. All those neurons or whatever, electric, all the mysterious pathways of thought.

"She's been all transient. You know? Moving around from cheap hotel to cheap hotel. If you like having her here, maybe you could tell she can move in. Not in a crash in the guest room kinda way, but in the put up posters on the wall and your name in glitter stickers on the door kinda way.

"For as long as you want, or as long as she wants.

"I dunno, I bet she could use a home."

Hawksley

Hawksley isn't expecting her to kiss him then but, all the same, she does. And he knows as her lips spread over his temple that she wants to bite him there, and he thinks that if she could, she'd hold his heart in her teeth, and something about that sets it pounding. The pounding feels like trust, and

as well it should.

He listens as she murmurs things to him that he did not know, had not asked, was not planning on asking. Things he suspected, though, of the young woman who he has seen here and there, peripheral in his vision the way that she has been peripheral to his awareness in his home. He thinks of her now, and the way she looks, and even though she has other things to wear than the yellow sundress now, he pictures her in a corona of bright gold, searing and burning, roiling, the liquid heat of creation.

Hawksley's eyes close for a moment.

"Something about her tells me that actually making such an offer would make her bolt."

He exhales, and his chest moves with it. "You know as well as I do how people run from things that are good for them."

Serafíne

She does want to bite him there. He knows that, and he can also feel it in her kiss, which is equal parts tender and savage,

as she so often is, even when her savagery is hidden within her heart or bounded by her skin or buried, suffused, transmuted by her human form and her human skin and her human eyes and her human tears.

And some part of Sera is both caught up by something she does not precisely understand, some concordance she cannot identify or understand because there are so many things about herself that she cannot or will not identify or understand and the rest of her is right bloody here.

And Hawksley is telling her how people run from things that are good for them, and Sera moves her mouth against her skin, she says, "Not me," with such a momentary deadpan that there is a stutterstep before he realizes that she is laughing over that little lie, because when has she ever embraced anything that was good for her,

(except, maybe, him)

and of course she kisses him again because she is in the mood to kiss him and this time it is his brow and then she's pulling back, in close focus, her hair all tangled, her arms wrapped around him, forearms resting against his shoulders, fingers laced behind his neck.

"She told me she was waiting for the all-clear that no one was watching her before choosing whose couch to surf. Up to you what you say or how say it. She can stay though, right?"

Hawksley

He smirks. He smirks a smile at that. Not me, she lies, ohhh she lies. And he doesn't tell her she lies because she laughs.

Sera knows.

She draws back after another kiss, this on his third eye, and he looks right at her. He's serious. He's balancing their weight on the chair, her weight on his lap, his hands on her thighs. "If that's what she's waiting for, she's going to be waiting the rest of her life." He shakes his head. "I don't understand the ones --" he means the Awakened ones, "-- who center their choices around whether or not they're safe. None of us is safe. None of us should desperately be trying to hold on to such an idea."

Hawksley shakes his head; his disgust reads clearly. Not even disgust, just this air of are you fucking kidding me. "Of course she can stay. She is staying. For now." He narrows his eyes at her. "You never answered my question."

Serafíne

"I know," Sera tells him, and she does know; she understands; she agrees, when the fuck has she ever been safe, or sane, or responsible, even, in a way that anyone close to ordinary could begin to understand, "and maybe I'm fucking wrong, but she doesn't seem like the sort who is trying to be safe at all costs. More like, things got so bad she doesn't quite understand yet how to live without asking herself: when is it going to happen again.

"She just doesn't seem like the sort who's paralyzed by the Need to Be Safe. I could be wrong, you know? But she's got a helluva long time to figure it out."

And then he tells her that she never answered his question and Sera doesn't remember his question and she is asking him, with a neat little frown that creates a solemn divot between her straight brown brows, "What question?" when the lightning bolt hits her and her mouth rounds and she says " - oooh. You mean why I asked?

"I dunno," and I dunno has to be a placeholder, because Sera knows she's not getting away with I dunno with Hawksley. "She adores your fucking library. And she felt - to me - like she fit here. And I wanted to see if you agree."

Hawksley

"When I showed her my library," Hawksley says thoughtfully, "we talked a bit about safety. And the lack thereof. She seemed to get it. At least here she has some freedom to explore. She's taking to that. But she shouldn't make herself homeless because she's afraid someone she stays with might get hurt. I mean." He holds up both hands, temporarily removing them from her body,

such a sacrifice.

"I'm pretty sure with the right acceleration of base elements I could blow someone up. I'm not too worried about home invasion."

He lowers his hands again, wraps them around her, scoots her closer, wraps his arms around her waist. He bites her, gently, on her clavicle. It takes her that long to remember what his question is. And he is stirring, yes, she is warm and he is half-drunk and there are other things, too, other thoughts beyond her skin and her mouth and the wine, that bring him so readily to the surface.

"She does," he says, and there's a heaviness to his voice there, a weight that sinks in their bellies, he knows she has to feel it too, the way it tangles with lust, the way it matches the quickening of one pulse to another. His hand smooths up her skirt, up her hip, and he licks her throat. "And I do."

Serafíne

All Sera can do then is to hum her awareness, her understanding, her acknowledgment of his answer to her observation about the way that Alicia seems to fit because his hands are smoothing up over the straps of her garters, beneath her skirt, and his mouth is on her collarbone, so close to her right breast, and his other hand is beneath her upper thigh, just where she likes it, and by the time he tells her that he agrees with her she has forgotten what she said anyway.

Sera likes the way Hawksley goes from drowsy and lazily affectionate to wanting, to wanton, and it makes her breath catch and her heart seize in an entirely different fucking way from the way it did early, when he invited her onto his lap and held her close not like he wanted to fuck her insensate then and there, but like he wanted just to hold her close.

That was enough talking.

The way she's breathing is like she's offering her breasts to his mouth because she is, she is going to take off her stupid clothes she doesn't even know why she is wearing the goddamned things but his mouth is already on her right breast, over the lace, her nipple taut as he catches it between her teeth and she's, well, pressing her hips into his, she's already so fucking wet and she wants to feel him and this fold-up wooden chair really cannot take the stresses they are about to inflict upon it, no matter how strong Hawksley's thighs, no matter how well he braces his feet, and so he's standing up, picking her up with him, and her legs wrap around his waist and she's laughing, because that is what she told the future she wanted to happen and now it is and he takes her inside,

though they do not get very far.

--

Close to midnight, maybe they go swimming, naked and splashing and Sera dares him to catch her and he's so fucking tall, of course he can catch her, and it is like a movie montage, and they end up making out in the shallows of the pool. Sera has had so much champagne by then that she seems to be made of bubbles, when he picks her up again she asks him if that is why she is so light and laughs and even though she wants to kiss him like anything she also wants to make eskimo kisses with him and so she does, laughing, Moet and Chandon on her breath and tells him that he should come bouldering with them next time, she'd forgotten how much she liked it, how brilliant it is to climb and climb, and hold yourself aloft until you cannot hold anything anymore, and then left yourself go,

and fall,

except Hawksley wouldn't hit the ground, would he. He would catch a thermal, right?

And soar.
