Kalen Holliday

Kalen is sprawled in his new favorite office, which is to say that he is lounging over a cracked vinyl booth, repaired in places with layers of duct tape. He's drawing looks, though whether that's because he's got just a brush of something shimmery on his eyelids and looks extra ghost-pale in all black, or because he's working on a laptop with an actual newspaper is anyone's guess.

He has coffee too. And, look, this is endlessly refilled diner coffee. He's drinking it without complaint. Not that there is anyone to complain to, really. But Dany has heard him talk about proper coffee and Alexander has seen him make proper coffee. Of course, Alexander has also seen him here.

He does not have pie at the moment. Only coffee. And work.

Alexander

Coffee. Work. And now Alexander.

He’d swung by Alyssa’s place, on the off-chance she was in. She knows rather more about spirits than he does, and he wants to ask about the ones he’d seen around the Black Orchid. The kind of things that it’s best not to chat about over the phone – Grace would be so proud at his level or paranoia.

Not entirely surprisingly, she had been out. But Kalen’s resonance had been felt on the ride past, and coffee and pie are good reasons to meet up with a friend. So if he’s paying attention, there will be the sound of a motorbike approaching, parking and the engine dying away outside, along with the feel of an oncoming ice age. So he arrives through the diner door, helmet in one hand. A quick conversation with the bored-looking waitress and he slides into the other side of the booth with a cup of dark, possibly stewed, filter coffee.

“Hey.”

There may be pie to follow. After all, there were plenty of other flavours they hadn’t gotten around to trying yet.

Danny

*Danny was..... lost.... And not for the first time in his life probably. Somehow the route he'd intended to take had ended up with him here... in probably what could be safely described as "no man's land" as far as the city were concerned.

New housing mingling with old, sometimes dangerous... that would also mean there were mean dogs chained up in yards and groups of people collecting in places. Figuring that this might well be the safest part of the entire area, he stopped outside the diner and parked up, then frowned as he looked around.

Going into the diner though, he didn't seem overly bothered, or was that merely his outer confidence? Some times it was easier to just use his resonance like a shield, spark, spark spark spark... but at other times it attracted people like flies.

Today Danny would be wearing what was commonly known as something unremarkable. It wasn't cold as such outside, but he didn't want to take chances.

That newly done ink was carefully sheathed in his shabby chic combat boots, the tops of which were stuffed with the bottoms of a pair of faded blue skinny jeans. the chain for his wallet was attached to the belt he wore to keep them up. . A black shirt spattered with what looked like scratches of purple sat on his torso and over that he had a black leather vest, undone with leather ties down the side seams. Over which was his leather jacket itself.

He walked up to the bar after a quick and surreptitious look around without making eye contact with anyone in particular. But he was already alerted to the presence of Kalen, so hard to ignore that particular man and his swirling mass that heralded a storm. Then there was frozen waste that was Alexander. He didn't have the option of anything....... apart from yeah, that'd do. He rested his hand on the bar and smiled just a little to the girl.* Uh... Coke, full fat with.... *he frowned and then nodded as he chose.* A cheeseburger with everything, fries, oh and one of those icecream soda's on the side. *He pulled out his wallet and handed out the notes for her, then turned again to look and see who else was there. On the hand that put the wallet away there was a ring today, a big silver thing with a square top to it.*

Kalen Holliday

Oh. Look. The cosmos hates productivity. Not surprising.

And seems as interested in smushing him together with Danny as Sera...? Perhaps slightly more surprising.

He debates, momentarily, the wisdom of slipping under the table and over to Alexander's side, but flopping on Alexander for comedy may have to wait for summer. He wasn't lying the other day. He does hate to be cold. So he unsprawls a little and nudges the things he has spread over the table into a corner so he's taking up something more like a reasonable amount of space.

"Hey, Alce," he says to Alexander. "I think our strange habits of random confluence may soon be the only thing keeping this place in business. It sure as hell isn't the coffee." He curls up against the wall, regards Alexander with a kind of laziness that indicates he must already have run his threat assessments on Danny. "How are you?"

Alexander

“I’m good. Carrying on, y’know? How about you?” Alexander looks up from watching Kalen rearrange his things on the table to really look at him. It wasn’t so long ago that he had to be almost kidnapped to get out and do something vaguely normal with other people. There’s concern for how his friend is doing now.

Alexander holds the coffee cup between both hands, elbows resting on the edge of the booth table, looking over the top of the cup at Kalen. There’s the occasional glance at the newcomer. “You know him?” he asks quietly. Because he doesn’t, and there’s a slight tension in his posture at the table. Nothing blatant, but something Kalen would notice.

Hopefully this won’t involve brawling in a back alley. Again.

[And why not, Per+Awarempathy because dice are fun]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (1, 3, 4, 8) ( success x 1 )

Danny

*He got his drink then made his way over to the table, slipping in to perch on the seat next to Kalen after choosing him to be the lesser of the two evils.* Well now... ain't this just great... *He set his drink down and gave Alexander an upnod briefly, then eyed that alleged coffee substance they were drinking.* That stuff'll kill ya.... *Yeah, from the king of the redbull shine.*

Hannah

It wouldn't seem like it, but Hannah liked to have adventures. When the sun was out, and the shadows dissipated, she was more adventurous than ever. It was easiest, of course, when Victor was with her; everything was easier when Victor was with her.

Hannah liked coffee. She especially liked it because it made her more social sometimes, and it sometimes made the sounds go away.

You can do it. The soft voice muttered to her. See? Victor will help you.

Hannah was not easy to miss. She might have otherwise been a normal girl except that something was a bit wrong with her. "Yes, this is a good place." She said, her head tucked a little, hair hanging around her face. She wore a green cotton scarf wrapped around her throat, one bit hanging over her chest and the other over her back. Despite the weather, she wore a light fabric, loose long sleeve grey shirt with a another loose blue tank overtop, sporting some faded animal image on it. She wore a skirt, deep blue stockings and a pair of simple black shoes. With her was a retriever with a head haltie, and a vest laying over his back with the 'SERVICE DOG' listen in bold.

Hannah slipped in, a messenger at her side, and paused to assess exactly how to function in this diner; they were all different.

Kalen Holliday

"Mmmmmm...we've met. Serafine somehow convinced me I should go on a date with him. I'll report back on that train wreck after it happens. Possibly by showing up at your place at four am with a bottle of whiskey."

He glances at Danny as he settles into the booth. "Don't get too excited. I think there's an unspoken somber and faded ambiance rule. And don't you drink paint thinner or something?"

He returns his attention to Alexander. "Alce, this is Danny." He smiles faintly and glances back to Danny, waves at Alexander. "Alexander."

And then his attention shifts again, this time toward Hannah. Who is that? Is she a threat? What is off about her?

[Awarepathy at Hannah because being weird in Kalen's presence means you get studied. At least until he's determined if you're dangerous.]

Dice: 7 d10 TN6 (1, 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 8) ( success x 3 )

Alexander

There’s a faint smile when Kalen explains that Sera’s set them up on a date. “I’ll make sure there’s some ice in the freezer and some clean shot glasses standing by. I thought you and Ian were... Dating?”

Danny walks over and the only available place to sit was next to Kalen. Alexander looks up at the stranger as his destination becomes obvious and gives no indication that he’s going to budge up to make space. Until he gets comfortable with the guy, he wants to be able to leave. Not that there’s any indication that that’s going to happen either. He does return the nod, though, and adds a “Hi,” when Kalen introduces him. It may not be the warmest of welcomes, and his resonance doesn’t help, but it’s not hostile as such. Just... wary.

Then? His attention turns towards the Hannah as well. He remembers some of the mages who had been around for longer talking about how there had been a sudden influx of newcomers around the time that he arrived and Awakened. It looks like the floodgates have opened again. Kalen’s attention on her flags her as a stranger. Someone to be watched.

Alexander

[And because we're looking for threats, Per+Alert at Hannah]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (1, 1, 3, 3, 4, 5) ( fail )

Danny

*He nodded again to Alce, then grinned before glancing at Kalen.* They don't have my particular brand of poison on the shelf so.. *he shrugged one shoulder and then frowned as he saw Hannah, leaning slightly closer to Kalen and adding Alex into it.*

Be nice... I think she's.... I dunno, broken some how. She went off at me last night, something to do with Red. Seems real skittish, but you'll see. Ian talked to her a bit. after Sera calmed her down, I don't know what set her off but she was huddling and curling up in the corner on the pavement outside a restaurant. *he picked up his drink and took a long sip of the near black engine cleaner his eyes finally moving from Hannah to Alexander again.*

Danny

(Don't wait for Hannah, her player is doing stuff and will post intermittently.)

Hannah

She lowers her eyes even further to avoid noticing any attention she might be getting. You need to sit. Hannah nodded slowly to herself. "First step. First step is find a place." You can do it. They're looking. You can do it.

Hannah took in a deep breath and slowly stepped forward, trying to put as much space as she could between herself and the other diners. The light was soothing in itself. No monsters here, not yet. "The smell is different."

Hannah found her way to a seat, a booth away from others, and she slid right in easily. Victor, the dog, sat on the outside. For his obedience, she stroked his head. "Good. Good." The bag was set on the seat. "Stay." And she let go of his leash to pull books from her bag and set them out on the table. "No. I know it does, but...."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen...well...almost chokes on nothing at all when Alexander suggests that maybe Kalen and Ian might be dating. "No. No." He shakes his head. "Not...no. We...no. Not even sleeping together anymore. That whole...coma thing got...intense and then just...yeah. No."

He listens to Danny, glances at Hannah, and nods. "Right. I'll try to be gentle. That...always works so well." Sure it does. He is perfectly capable of it with Sera. Grace. You know...people he knows.

He looks back to Alexander and smiles. "I was thinking we could use a place to hang out, you know, before formal formal introductions, with people who are just getting to know the city, and I was thinking maybe my place. I mean...it has decent security. Even if we accidentally bring home something awful. And there isn't much we can't replace if we decide to burn it down."

Alexander

Kalen’s response about Ian is only half-heard and Danny isn’t so much forgotten about as ignored for the moment. His attention is on Hannah. There’s something very not right about her – the way she’s reacting to them, the way she tries to hide away from everyone else in the place, avoids making eye contact. Everything about her screams that she’s up to something.

He glances at Kalen but doesn’t return the smile. “Have you added a secret tunnel out of the place? You might be able to stop them getting in, but they can stop you getting out too.” His gaze returns to the booth and as much of Hannah as he can see.

She’s got to be up to something...

Danny

*He couldn't help but listen to that idea and found himself nodding to it. Then piped up.*

Your place? *he turned to look at Kalen for a moment, not commenting on the whole relationship thing.* Sounds good.

*Then he sets his hand on the table, the one with the switch ring on it and pushes himself out of the seat, slowly making his way over like one might approach a skittish horse or something, well.... that's how he thought of it anyhow. When he was at the end of the booth he leaned on the edge of the seat facing her.* Hey.... You doing okay today? That's a nice dog you got there... I won't make a fuss of him, he's working.

Kalen Holliday

He watches Alexander and Danny, then Hannah again for a few seconds.

"Mmmmmm...well. Grace won't have advanced escape tunnel plans anytime soon. Soon enough, yes, but for the immediate future...point. Still. There aren't a lot of options." He sighs, and then reaches all the way across the table to touch Alexander's shoulder. "Hey. I'm not sure what's going on there, but I think she might be less skittish if we don't look at her like she's about to summon demons, huh? I mean, I know. Me. Social anything. Just a theory...."

He does watch, though not particularly intently, as Danny speaks with Hannah. But unless something changes...she doesn't seem like much of a threat. Not to him, anyway. He does frown, just a little.

"Unless you see something I don't. But...if there's anything to worry about there in any immediate sense...I missed it."

Hannah

It was less his voice and more his shadow that seemed to alert her to his presence. Hannah had set a textbook on the table and had her notebook opened, a green pen sitting on the pages. Her eyes shifted to Danny, though never fully up, just enough to notice who he is...and slowly.

"I know who it is." She muttered. "I remember!" She hissed into the booth, then looked back towards Danny. Her lips pursed into a thin line and she dropped her eyes. "...Yes." She forced out. "But they're crying again. No one hears them, but carries them everywhere. "

Her chin shifted, her attention moving to the dog, a hand placed on his head. "Victor. He's Victor."

Danny

*He smiles, even moving to a slow and easy half crouch to allow the men behind him a better view of Hannah.* He's a good one, looks clever too. I bet he's smart. *Then he looked at Hannah again.*

You know, if you want to, you can come over and sit nearer to us. We ain't gonna bite you none... *he leans a bit closer to her but only as far as the edge of the table.* Kalen, the guy with the laptop, he's a friend of Sera's. You met her last night, she wore those spikey boots?

Alexander

He watches as Danny gets up and moves over to the other booth, wary. On edge. Waiting for something to happen, even if he just can’t put his finger on what it is that’s wrong. It’s just something in her manner, the way she moves, the way she acts... The same inkling when he’s watching someone who he just knows is about to do something illegal. It’s a sense he’s come to trust.

Unless you see something I don’t. He nods slowly, still watching the other booth. “I can’t tell you what, but there’s something that’s just not right about her.” He glaces at Kalen with a faint smile. “Well, more than usually not right when it’s one of us.”

Hannah

Maria always told her she should try to make friends. It was the hardest thing to do sometimes, but she should do it. Hannah smiled warmly. "He is. He really likes food. More than me." She's feeling much better. Some days are clearer than others. Some days she can't get the words out right. Victor always helps.

Then her smile slowly faltered and she lifted her eyes to look towards the other two. She was clearly looking at them, but she made sure not to meet their faces. "Sera?" Her lips tightened. "The woman with the half head?" Oh she remembered the shoes. She never forgets something like that. Or Danny's jacket, or Ian's coat.

Her eyes drop to her lap, considering the offer being made. A small nod came from her. "Ok." Because she should make friends, and she knew Danny..and Sera. And Ian. And the woman they were with, the one who gave her the bracelet that held the sun.

Hannah moved, picking up the leash after stuffing her books in her bag. "Stand, Victor." The dog rose, tail giving a slow wag as she slipped out of th ebook with her goods.

Kalen Holliday

"Well. She does seem strange, but as far as I can tell...it's just because she's so skittish. She doesn't seem to mean anyone any harm." He stretches himself back out over the full length of the booth with Danny gone. Like a cat that has to take up all of the available space. "And if we haven't heard anything from Ian or Serafine...they're good with people, or at least understanding them."

He tracks Danny and Hannah, but it's much less of a thing that seems to concern him. He does not turn those eyes on her the way he did the day he met Danny. Alexander was spared that, but only because Kalen was distracted by the Avatar storm and then Alexander was saving Sera so...he never really got that look.

"She might need our help. Denver is a bit like the island of misfit toys sometimes. Which is cool. I doubt anywhere else would have kept me. But...maybe she just needs to be here too." And then Hannah is moving and Kalen does not curl back up but slides under the table and then up on Alexander's side, leaving Alexander the outside because only one of them probably cares much about being pinned right now. And that leaves Hannah having to deal with being next to neither of them.

He reaches over to close the laptop, not that the mapping program is precisely classified, and pulls not the laptop but his coffee to his new side of the table. "Everything will be fine, Alce. If nothing else, because we make it so." He murmurs, and he sounds so relaxed, so perfectly sure of that. Sometimes it's hard to reconcile all the moments of Kalen. Because they get so damned contradictory.

Danny

There you go. Its okay... I'll move into the corner that way you can keep Victor with you.. that okay? And you can go any time.. It's all good. *he kept his voice calm and steady.*

See? *he grins and gets comfortable, hauling his drink over to where he would be sitting now without disturbing Kalens stuff too much.*

Hannah

Hannah followed, and when she sat in the booth, she made sure to keep enough distance between her and Danny that she wouldn't rub her elbow into his, or any part of her arm really. The dog took up the space on the outside of the booth at her side. The bag? She set it between her and Danny, setting up that obvious barrier.

Her hand reached out to stroke the dog gently as she kept her head down enough that she wasn't making eye contact with the two across from her. "I know." She said, feeling the tension between ehrself and the others. And what does one do now? Maria would say that people talk to one another.

"Do you like cake?"

Alexander

Kalen gets a slightly strange look from Alexander when he says Ian is good with people. Sera, absolutely? But that guy? Admittedly their first meeting was less than stellar. The second involved guns and swords and corrupted nature spirits. The third? Ok, maybe the guy isn’t a complete dick. Maybe. And he was, at least, concerned about Sky...

Hannah and Danny – and Victor – start making their way over from the other booth. Quietly, before they get close enough to hear, he tells Kalen, “I don’t trust her. Really.” He gets another odd look at Everything will be fine... and the conviction behind it. The man can be more human than he ever realises before swinging back into... something else. He considers the two approaching and makes a decision. He stands.

For a few seconds, Kalen gets his complete attention – trying to reinforce his opinion that something’s just not right. “You be careful.” The moment passes and he looks at the others as they slide into the booth. “Have a good day.” His gaze passes over the other two as he turns towards the exit and, leaving a couple of notes on the counter for the barely-touched coffee, heads out into the street.

[Thanks for the scene – I go to take drugs and pass out on the couch.]

Danny

(Okay. feel better soon hun)

Kalen Holliday

Kalen nods to Alexander and then let the two people coming to the table have his attention. He sprawls back out again once Alexander is gone. No threats here. Sure. Except...they are Mages. Not all of them have to be able to move to be dangerous.

"They have fourteen kinds of pie," Kalen says. "So naturally I have yet to try the cake." He says this as though it makes perfect sense. Logical deductions. Totally.

"I'm Kalen." He does not reach across the table, he leaves her her space. Or keeps his. Something.

Danny

I lurve cake. *he grins and takes another sip of that drink, just as the burger was brought over with his fries and the icecream float to go with it. He picks out a chip and dips it in some BBQ sauce before munching on it. Before he shifts Kalens stuff carefully and without getting grease on them to set them on the laptop and push them towards Kalen, towards safety.* So, what's your name then? I don't think we got introduced properly last night. And you didn't say it earlier when you mentioned Victors.

Hannah

"Pie?" There's a perk to her voice."PIE?" Oh she likes pie. "Cake is good.It has good shape. Smooth. Smooth on the top, round."

When Danny's food came, Hannah made an obvious attempt to put distance between herself and it. She wouldn't touch the place or so much as look at it. What she did do, was steal a fry from his food, one that hadn't been touching the burger.

"Hannah. I'm Hannah. I forget. I always forget. Names. They wander away sometimes. I forget to look for them."

Kalen Holliday

"Uh-huh." Kalen says, in response to the information supplied about the shape of cake. He doesn't seem to find that half as odd as one might expect.

"I like the shape of blackberries. Still round. Still smooth in places. But, you know, also interesting."

Danny

*He didn't miss the fact she stole food from his plate, just glanced at Kalen and nodded subtly. He moved the plate just a little, turning it so that she could help herself a bit more to the chips.* You know what I find fascinating? Beehives. How the hell do those little fellas figure their tube things? They're all the same! Everywhere!!

Hannah

"Not the hair. The shape. Not the hair." She grabbed another fry, not seeming to realize or understand that she was taking Danny's food.

She blinked, glancing to the side at Danny and trying to avoid looking at the burger. "Scent. Bees smell. Bees use smell and direction and the sun to know where they're going. When bees come back from an adventure, they dance for the bees to show them where to go for honey. They use angle to the sun, and scent to say that the flower is this way and that way, even though sometimes they get it wrong." She moved her hands to her scarf, smoothing the fabric out as she talked. "Did you ever talk to a bee? They're really nice."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen takes a breath. Yeah. Denver. Island of misfit toys. Opinion...definitely not revised.

"I...no. Never had the occasion to converse with any bees." He still seems fine with the conversation. But then, he doesn't really do normal conversation either. "Dancing's cool though."

Danny

Well fancy that... I never knew that... Colour me impressed as all hell right now. *He nodded glancing at Hannah before he picked up the burger carefully and moved it the napkin so she could just go ahead with the plate unmolested. Then he got up close and personal, taking the first bite and enjoying it.*

Dancing... *he nodded and swallowed.* One of the most primal things there is, goes right back to the beat. I never knew bee's knew how to boogie though.

Hannah

Her voice elevates as she picks up another fry, putting it between her lips. "They do! They do they do! And they're real nice if youdon't..." She made a motion with her fingers as if squeezing or touching something. "They like pollen. Lots of pollen. So you give them flowers. But only the right flowers because if you give them the wrong flowers they won't like you that much, course it's ahrd to know the right flowers because they see different patterns and we don't see them." She just...talked, not so mindful of their presence. Hannah shifted in her seat, wiggling slightly out of her seat. "See? See they dance like this.." And she wiggled her butt, taking a few steps forward, then turning around and making a figure 8, meeting back at the beginning and wiggling as she stepped forward again. "And they vibrate their wings like this.." She shoot her arms out to her side, despite being in a diner, and maybe getting in someone's way. She has to dance the bee dance!

Lena Reilly

[[Per+Aware for magedar! Spec: Uncanny Instincts]]

Dice: 7 d10 TN6 (2, 2, 3, 3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 10) ( success x 4 ) Re-rolls: 2

Lena Reilly

A nice, pleasant and fairly warm day in Denver usually means that Lena's out and about. The DJ is far from the most social of mages, at least among the Awakened community itself, but she does enjoy being out with the sun on her face and people milling about her. It's one thing to not engage people much, but the ability to watch life exist in a chaotic, beautiful clash around her is something that Lena can't often avoid.

Of course, that might be easier if she wasn't caught up in her own world. But in this case, as happens sometimes, she absolutely is. Finding Lena without music in her ears is a true rarity, and sometimes she's inspired. That usually means that she's dancing as she walks, and that's the case now. She's in a state of motion, her shoulders swaying a little and her hands twisting and turning as she walks down the street and toward the diner. What she's dancing to is hard to guess; her earbuds are in and not loud enough to be heard outside of them. But she's caught up in the moment and however people around her may be reacting to it...well, that's their problem.

As she passes in front of the diner, she picks up a familiar Resonance. That heavy storm is hard to miss, after all. She quirks a smile and, without missing a beat, hip-checks her way through the door. Her hair is free and loose, falling over her shoulders and the "In Love With the DJ"-emblazoned tank top that she's wearing. A pair of jeans and comfortable sandals completes the look, and she finally opens her eyes (funny how she wasn't running into anything) when she gets in, her sight falling on Kalen and the other two. With a smile and nod, she starts to make her way over there.

Kalen Holliday

"Well. I do generally refrain from petting bees. I find that's best for all...." He watches Hannah start a bee dance in the diner. Huh.

"...for all involved. Why don't we sit back down? Tell me more about the flowers. What kind of flowers do bees like? How do I figure that out? Do they like different ones, different bees? Different flowers at different times? I would hate to bring the wrong ones."

And then there is Lena, and he is moving to not take up an entire bench of the booth again so she can sit somewhere without pulling up any chairs and possibly displacing any dogs.

Danny

*Danny could've laughed watching the girl waaggle her trunk around like that, but then just as the smile began to broaden... Kalen spoke and he frankly, could've just hugged him there and then, the guy was trying. He was really honest to god trying and that made such a difference. It helped him to relax more and he didn't worry about eating now, Then Lena was coming closer and he turned his head to look at her as he took another bite of the burger.* Bee's are cool... *he managed before he continued to eat and swallow.* Little funk masters.

Hannah

[am packing up to head home.. keep going! BBS]

Lena Reilly

Hannah's bee dance draws an amused smile, but she's not one to complain or deride someone for dancing after all, is she? She pulls the earbuds out and puts her iPod into her pocket, giving Kalen a smile.

"Hey, you. It's been a little while...how are you?"

So as not to make them feel left out, she looks at the other side of the table and smiles to the both of the people she doesn't know. "Hello." She doesn't just sit down...that's never been her thing. Some people have personal bubbles and she knows Kalen be okay with it, but joining a table without being invited is still a thing for her.

Kalen Holliday

"Hey, Hummingbird. Join us. We're talking about bees. Sometimes with demonstrations of bees dancing. Right now, though, picking out flowers for bees. Apparently not just any flower will do. If you pick the right flowers though, bees will like you. Apparently they appreciate attention to detail. Or, at least, to their desires. Making them shockingly human."

He smiles. "Our resident bee whisperer is Hannah, that's Danny." He waves at each of them absently. "This is Lena."

Danny

*He lifted his left hand and waved his fingers in a brief curl. Then picked up his drink again to take a sip.* Hey Lena..

*He would've offered introductions, but Kalen took care of that. He wore just his face today, not working so there was no need to have put his eyeliner on... besides, really? Was it safe to wear it during the day all the time? Probably not.*

You look familiar, do I know you?

Lena Reilly

She can't help but shiver a little when bees are mentioned. She's not bee-phobic or anything, but it was a bee (of sorts) that got her into the whole Hydra mess. Still, she puts on a smile. "Not my favorite insects, but they have their charms. Nice to meet you Danny, Hannah."

No hand extended to the two of them. Just a little wave of fingers. When Danny asks if he knows her, she smiles a bit. "Maybe. I DJ for a lot of the clubs around here. Did it in New York and a few other cities as well. I go by DJ Halcyon. You're familiar to me too, actually. Do you hit up a lot of clubs?"

Kalen Holliday

Kalen settles back against the corner of the booth. He takes a sip of coffee and makes only a tiny grimace, then sets it back down. He seems content to just let Danny and Lena figure out how they know each other for the moment.

He watches the three of them quietly. He is curious about all of them, after all.

Danny

*That newly done ink was carefully sheathed in his shabby chic combat boots, the tops of which were stuffed with the bottoms of a pair of faded blue skinny jeans. the chain for his wallet was attached to the belt he wore to keep them up. . A black shirt spattered with what looked like scratches of purple sat on his torso and over that he had a black leather vest, undone with leather ties down the side seams. Over which was his leather jacket itself.*

Ahh.. yeah.. *He smiled lopsidedly and shrugged one shoulder again.* Drothe.. *he supplied the name. Now it made sense, rock guitarist/singer, a good one too by all accounts, an ax-man with lightning riffs and fingers that danced down the fret-board; and now he was here in Denver. Not LA.* It'll be good to hear a set some time.

Lena Reilly

It clicks when he lists his stage name, and she smiles. "Ooh, right. I've heard of you. Very cool...well, welcome to Denver. From one music professional to another, it's a good place for us. We have a pretty fantastic music scene here."

She turns her gaze back to Kalen, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. "So what's new? Have I missed anything exciting as of late?"

Hannah

Hannah slipped into her seat, doing her best not to bump into Victor as he laid on the floor near her. Her hands slipped to her scarf, smoothing the fabric a bit shyly as she looked to her lap. Her head hung, letting the hair slide around her face. Hannah reached over to slip a fry from Danny's plate, munching it like a rabbit.

They all talked, and Hannah reached into her bag to pull out her book. Her feet curled up into the booth, the bound object being placed against her knees. She was crowded, at least by the seat and the table, but it felt secure. Lena had said hi, and Hannah lifted a hand as a method of greeting, and let it drop.

Kalen Holliday

"Mmmmmmmmm...I will definitely have to catch you up. Probably nothing will actually explode in the near future." He smiles. "We can hope, at least."

He glances at Danny. "Mmmmmmmm...don't be confused. Not all the people you meet around me are musicians or dancers or DJs or something."

Danny

*His eyes moved to Kalen as he spoke then grinned.* Yeah, I figured.... *then he turned his attention to Hannah as she sat back down.* So, which bee's like what flowers then Hannah?

Lena Reilly

"Well, hopefully not." She chuckles and finally moves to take a seat, leaving some space between her and Kalen. She settles comfortably in, looking to the two newcomers as Danny asks about bees and what flowers they like. It's not something in which she has any area of expertise and she's more interested in getting to know the two than offering her opinion, anyway.

She has a certain amount of ease in her posture as she settles in, although that's only to a point. She's never been particularly comfortable when there are a lot of new people around. Large crowds and one-on-one are both fine for her. Crises...also fine. When it comes to small groups that she doesn't know very well, that's a different situation.

Hannah

"Basil, mint, watermelon, melon, oregano, chives, berries, clovers, lilacs, bee's balm..." She focused on the book in front of her, turning to the appropriate page for an examination of old architecture. "Tulips, sunflowers, maple trees, black locust, sumacs, tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, black-eyed susans, golden-rods, pumpkins..."

"Mostly wildflowers, and flowering plants that have long blooming cycles. The last bee to give me words loved blueberries." She shifted a little in her seat, turning a page as she focused hard on the words. She reached over, absently, to steal another fry.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen just nods. "Blueberries, huh? I have a friend who makes fantastic blueberry scones. Do you want some cake? Because at some point Danny is going to run out of fries. We wouldn't want him to be hungry, would we?"

He glances at Lena and smiles, "Things are mostly good, considering. I've just been playing with some ideas, and considering one of our last conversations, I think maybe you'll have thoughts. That's all."

Danny

*He was still tucking into the burger but leaving the fries for Hannah to munch down, taking his time as he enjoyed it, it wasn't terrible, but well, it was okay. It did the job. Hannah and her seemingly endless list of plant made his eye brows rise up slowly and he turned his head to look at her for a long moment, then he nodded after just making a sound.* Mmmhmm.

*Then his eyes lifted to look at the other two at the table, pausing from time to time he took a suck of the drink he had beside the plate, then reached over and nudged the plate of chips a little closer to Hannah. All in all, he was far more relaxed as he sat and got to know the people around him. Kalen wasn't talking, which was fine, it was almost possible he was prone to silences he'd begun to realise. As if he needed time to adjust to what ever impulse he had in his head. Don't push... he'd been told repeatedly, so that's not what he tried to do, not trying to force an effort from the other guy.

When he'd finished his burger he pushed took another drink of the coke he'd ordered and leaned back in his seat, resting his shoulders back against the cushions. His right hand and it's longer black nails lifting as he wiped the corners of his mouth on the napkin.*

No I'm good. *He chuckles.* But if you want cake or pie, let me know.

Lena Reilly

"What, because I've always exhibited such great judgment in the past?" She says it with a bit of a grin. Kalen's one of the people with whom Lena is fully comfortable in Denver. They had their rocky start but that was due to outside factors and once they got to know each other, Lena warmed to him. It's like she said once before (abbreviated version): Kalen 101 is What a dick. Kalen 201? I’ll kill you if you hurt him.

She's joking in this little bit of self-deprecation though. She has her insecurities, but this moment doesn't involve them. "Yeah, absolutely. Any time you want to pass anything by me, you know that I'm game."

She turns her attention to Danny for a moment. "So what brings you to Denver anyway? Just a waystation, or something more permanent."

Hannah

"No. No no. Not bread. Blueberries. She liked blueberries. Not scones. Scones not flowers."

"Pie." She said it even before Kalen and Danny had even really finished. "Pie. Not bad color pie. No bad color pie. No." She shook her head slowly, hair sliding around her face as she did, reaching up to grab another fry again, stuffing it in her mouth one munch at a time. "Three. Three pieces. "

Danny

*He had to consider the question and the surroundings, then he shrugged one shoulder a bit again.*

Mostly? Learning.. *he nods, making eye contact with her for a minute before he looked away again.* trying to figure a few things out, get my head around a few things... *That was right, be vague and hope for the best, it was easier this way it sort of left a few things out but... he couldn't help that. Then he caught up with what Hannah had said and nodded.*

Right, so... uh....... *Then he blinked in surprise again and chuckled.* You want three peices of pie?

Kalen Holliday

"Well. You know. I can't speak to that. I do know you have absolutely no problem telling me things you'd like me to do when I haven't asked, so I assume you'll tell me them definitely when I do." He only sounds amused.

That doesn't really change at Hannah's pronouncement. "Yeah? What colors are good colors? Do the colors have to match? Should they all be the same color?"

Lena Reilly

She knows the point that Kalen's talking about; she remembers it well. It was during that point in which everything was a haze for her, but it was also the first time in Denver that she willingly got close to someone in a physical capacity.

She smiles a bit...not at the memory, but just at Kalen's reference of it. It's a reserved smile, amused but not ebullient. "In all fairness, I was a completely mindfucked mess at that moment." She might expound further, but her gaze quickly shifts across the table and she lets it drop.

"But yeah, I'll give you feedback, no problem."

Hannah

"Three."

She didn't need to elaborate did she? Three was just the best number. She reached into her bag for her green pen, ruffling her hand around. "Mr green..." Her legs dropped and she leaned over the bag to look inside, stuffing her head in it as if they would give her a better view. "Shh...I didn't. Its there. I know it is. I put it there. You saw me. "

"Good colors are good colors. Bad colors are bad colors. All same is not good. Bees don't like all same. Deer don't like all same. All same is not good colors." Hannah's book, forgotten now, slumped to the floor with a thud as she now focused all of her attention on her bag. The service job jumped a little, then rolled on his side. He stretched his nose out to sniff at the noise maker.

"Where is it? Did I forget again?"

Danny

*He nodded and reached for a table menu then handed it to Hannah.* Well, take a look and decide. *No, he didn't want to fall foul of the girl losing it again with this matter and hang up she had with colours. Part of him was curious about which ones were bad, which were good and even more, why they were bad and good. The conversation between Kalen and Lena made him a little bit curious but he didn't pry on that either. Somethings were best left un-asked... besides, he could imagine just judging from the reaction last night. Still, the girl was now rummaging around in her bag to try and find what she needed.

He shifted in the seat and reached into his pocket for his phone, sliding his thumb over the lit up screen before hitting the side switch to turn the screen off again, then he put it away, He looked at Lena once more..* So, what about you? Why're you in Denver and not in NYC holding your own with the DJs up there?

Grace

East Colfax is a rough street to put it mildly. It also houses a warehouse full of high-and-low-tech Etheric toys, and Kalen's new favorite place to obtain pie. So it cannot be all bad. Just mostly rotten.

Mostly rotten is still enough of a reason to watch out. And by this, we mean that Grace is not walking into the diner with her eyes firmly planted into her cell phone. She is at least paying some attention. And that means she gets to experience the the full flood of 'here be Mages' that is a sparkling, stormy, growing, dying beat. She looks over to the table.

Oh, so it's going to be one of those days. Like, a 60-40 chance of doom and monsters. That's what it means when they congregate like this, right?

Her eyes roll at the universe's perverse jests. Ha ha, universe, I am on to you.

Today, Grace is dressed in jeans, sneakers, and a grey turtleneck jacket. Does she ever dress in any other fashion? Not by her own free will, she doesn't.

In any case, she walks over, puts on a happy countenance. Hey, it might not rain vampires today. The sun hasn't set yet, right?

"Hey," she says, to everyone. Apparently someone is a woman of few words today.

Lena Reilly

She goes to answer Danny, but her cell phone rings. She frowns and looks at it.

"Sorry guys, I have to take this call. It was nice meeting you Danny, Hannah."

She slips up out of the seat and makes her way to leave.

[[Thanks for the scene, guys! Getting a little crowded for me.]]

Danny

(Okay, see you later thanks as well)

Kalen Holliday

Kalen frowns a little, watching Hannah. But she'll find whatever she wants or not and Danny is offering her a menu. Presumably she can pick out things in the proper colors.

Deep breath, Holliday. This is totally easy to fix. You just need a Master of the Ars Mentis. No big deal. Just find one and figure out what they want in return for helping you and this won't even be a thing. What's the worst they could ask?

"Ah. Hi, Kit. This is Danny and Hannah."

"I'll call you," he says to Lena. "Take care."

Hannah

She purse he rlips, pulling her head out of the bag and lifting it, spilling the contents onto the table, regardless of where it all landed. Pens, pencils, notebooks, the shiny bracelet, paperclips that were bent out of shape. Erasers, pen caps that had been chewed on, a small bag of dog treats, a chew toy...

"Where is it?" Her voice lifted. "Sh! Shut up. I know! I didn't mean to! I really didn't!" Now she was running her hands through the things she had dumped until finally, her hands found the green pen. Hannah let out a slow and steady sigh as she hugged it. "Thought I lost you."

Another long sigh and she was glancing towards Grace through the strands of her hair, letting her eyes cast down as she pluckd the menu from Danny' hands. "That one." She picked a blueberry pie. "Three."

The dog next to her, with SERVICE DOG on his vest, lifted his head up as he detected the bag, and Hannah opened it, pulling out a few treats to hand to him. "Good. You're so good Victor." Her voice raising, but not in panic this time.

Danny

*He nodded to Lena as she went, then watched as Grace approached.* Hey Grace.

*In the meantime he was keeping an eye on what Hannah was up to, some how just felt kind of responsible around her. Which was fucked up, specially considering he'd just spent the past two or three years living out of the back of a car, motel hopping and touring. He watched with a frown appearing on his face as Hannah seemed to begin to get more anxious, then breathed out softly when she found what was was looking for. Then motioned to the waitress for service, placing the order for three portions of the blueberry pie.*

Serafíne

Danny

You know Danny's.

Serafíne

"It's like - " Sera is explaining something to Richard with a protracted precision. Smiling around the words, laughing at the way they get themselves made somehow, somewhere, some way within the frame of her body. She's explaining something to Richard while she's pushing open the door, hands skimming the glass frame, her golden head canted strangely as if she were listening to something no one else can hear.

"It's like - it's like - "

Which may be true. She's stoned. Pupils dilated, the black devouring the blue, though beyond the most intense of her hallucinations, which were more disturbing this trip than they usually might be. Somehow though she's come down, and calmed down, and slipped into this phase where she feels both voluble and cocooned.

Meeting Richard a bit earlier was a coincidence. Perhaps they smoked a joint. Perhaps she then suggested that they go someplace for pie. ("Chicken pot pie.") Oh Sera, you're so clever.

And eating seems like a good idea. She's looking, well, just a touch thin these days.

"Oooooh, Kalen's here." To Richard, turning back to him as he comes in after. "Fuck, I forgot what I was saying."

Grace

"Bye, er, Lena..." Grace says, trailing off when she realizes that the reason Lena's leaving is a phone call, and she probably won't even be heard.

But then, she starts paying more attention to the table's current residents, and glances to Kalen -- a silent communication of 'wtf'. Hannah, darling, you do not broadcast to the world that you hear voices like that. It's a great way to get involuntarily committed.

Then again, this is East Colfax. Everyone on this street has probably seen it before and couldn't care less.

"Yeah, I've met Danny. He bought me a gelato coffee thing," Grace says. "It was good."

The telltale ringing of Kalen's cell phone signals his abrupt departure. Everyone is getting calls today, it seems. [OOC: Ix is internet-troubled right now, so Kalen's going awaaaaay]

Serafíne

(Well, uh. nix the Kalen bit from my post, whatever.)

Richard

They did, in fact, smoke a joint. And now Richard is ambling along in Serafine's wake, feeling very tall and very mellow. Which is unsurprising, because he is, in fact, both very tall and very mellow at the moment. "I forgot what you were saying too," he laughs, because it is true, and because it is humorous. To him, anyway. He reaches over her to open the door wider, drawing himself up, taking a deep breath.

"Chicken pot pie," he muses. "I like turkey better. Hey, wasn't that -- " well; doesn't matter, he's left. "Do you know that girl?"

Him being the recently-departed Kalen. That girl being his table-mate. Obviously. It is not quite cold outside, but Richard has a light jacket on anyway, which he shrugs out of now. Beneath: buttondown shirt, jeans. Nice quality. Muted colors. It's autumn, after all.

Hannah

With her green pen triumphantly in hand, and the dog treats slowly slipped back in her bag, she leans under the table to grab the book that had fallen, pulling it in her lap. Hannah bites her lower lip, no chews on it, as she she scribbles in her book, nodding her head. "Yes yes, that's right. I know that's right. You -don't- have to remind me."

Danny

*He motioned for the seat that was now empty across from both him and Hannah to be taken if they wanted to. Smiling at them as he did so.* This is Hannah.

Serafíne

Richard must feel especially tall when he's walking in Sera's wake today. She's not wearing heels, just her Docs, so the extraordinarily tall swimmer is more than a foot taller than Sera herself. She has paired opaque thigh-high stockings that resolve around her thighs in a silhouette motify of a Parisian skyline with her combat boots and cut-off denim shorts today, along with a men's tuxedo jacket that seems several sizes too large, the sleeves all rolled up, over, you know, a little black and pink bra.

"Her." Sera is turning back to Richard, smiling now, aware of how her mouth curls, thinking strangely about the limits of her cheeks and what a strange thing lips are. "And her and also him."

Confirming, you see, this small note of triumph in her voice as she glances back and up at him. "I know fucking everyone." No sign of the darkness that might've slipped its arms around her half-way through the joint, not anymore, not now. "C'mon. I'll introduce you. Maybe you met Grace at Hawksley's birthday party?"

Grace

Grace slides into a chair at the table. The waitress didn't notice she was there, which isn't much of a shock really. So it's time to drag the mundane's attention away from the muttering girl and onto the one who can't be noticed.

She prods the waitress with a pointy tip of the menu. "I'll have blackberry. Cobbler, pie, I don't care. Oh, and ice cream. And a water. Thanks so much!"

Big bright smile. Please be distracted. Please don't notice the 'schizophrenic'. Yeah, Grace has heard of that before. Sometimes, with their kind, the voices are really real.

Richard

"I'm starting to think you do," Richard admits. He gives Grace a second, considering glance. "Maybe I did. I don't know. Too many people and too many drinks."

They're there: Grace's table, where Grace herself has just sat down. Now she's attended by two rather unusual individuals. Richard is, as previously mentioned, enormously tall; quite lean. He manages to be golden, hair and skin and everything, even as the days shorten. And then there is Serafine, who even in flats(!) manages to look ... well. Out of the ordinary. Sometimes Richard wonders how she dresses herself in the mornings. Hers is a fashion quite beyond even his gallic sensibilities.

Danny

Hey Sera.. How are things today? *Danny by contrast was dark with long black hair and mahogany brown eyes, lithe in form and shorter easily than Richard by a country mile, but taller than Sera. He smiled again at the pair of them before picking up his coke to finish it, then finally make a start on the sickening mess in the other glass. What was once an icecream float, was now a cloudy..... thing... He stirred it with a straw thought to mix it further then began to drink it, his eyes drifting to Grace as she ordered.*

Hannah

People. People keep appearing and Hannah curls more into herself, trying to shrink in her space on the booth, using the book to try and hide behind. Her eyes slipped from one to the next, trying to decide if whatever was happening was worthy of escape.

As Grace took a seat, Hannah quickly reached out for what objects remained on the table from her bag, and began to shove them back in quickly. "I was thinking the same. You're right. Better to." The book was snapped shut and shoved into her bag. Hannah slid out of the booth slowly, picking up the leash to the service dog hanging by her. The idea of giving a wave or a goodbye hadn't crossed her mind. Instead, she pulled her bag on her shoulders and with a few words, squirmed her way out of the diner.

Serafíne

"Graaaaaaace."

So, yeah. They amble or maybe rock up to the diner booth and Sera plants her hands on the end and Hannah picks herself up and squeezes out or whatever. Too many people: whatever. Sera's dark (dark) eyes flick upward to meet Hannah's. This glance down at the service dog and a supple shift of her slender hips out of Hannah's way as the other woman makes her escape.

"Danny. This is Richard." Sera tips her chin up up up and her head back back back in a way that makes her long hair much, much longer. Oh, neat. Feel how long it is, wriggling all down her spine. Confidentially, leaning in as if she were telling everyone a remarkable secret, all sotto voce, "He's a giant! A nice one though. We're kind of stoned."

Richard

"Danny. Grace." Richard nods at them, sort of lazy-loose, as he drags a chair out and drops easily into it. "Oh. Mind if I sit?"

Danny

*The corner of his mouth lifted in amusement as he took in Sera's state. He chuckled softly with a shake of his head then holds his index finger and thumb apart a fraction.*

Just a little bit, I think you can do better than that... *Then his eyes slid to Richard, then went up, up up.... before nodding in agreement.* He looks like one!

Hey man.. *he lifts a hand in greeting to Richard.* No come on in... Get comfortable.

Grace

This is not an uncommon thing to happen to Grace, that she arrives, and suddenly everyone needs to be elsewhere.

"Oh, well, see you, Hannah."

Graaaaaaaaace.

Truthfully, she knew Sera was around. Around about somewhere. It's hard to mistake that sensation of her, that feeling of being on the verge. Grace bends her head down over the back of her chair, to look at Sera and the giant upside-down.

"Seraaaaaaaaa," she says, and there is an upside-down smile to go with it. "When aren't you stoned?"

There is also a little wave for Richard in there somewhere.

Serafíne

"I'm actually," Sera clarifies to Danny, and she does it leaning-forward, her tattooed hands on the chipped tabletop, her thumb framed by mica that catch and pull the tracers of light through the corners of her vision. Ooooh, hands. Something about her manner makes it seem ever-so-confidential, like she's sharing secrets, but everyone within earshot can hear her. "more than a little bit stoned. "

Then, a mild and still somehow beatific little half-smile at Grace. "You remember Richard from Hawksley's party. He was on the couch."

The one on her lawn.

The one that showed up on her lawn.

Back to Danny, see - "They got it on Craiglist."

The couch, she means. Not that he has any fucking idea what the hell the creature is talking about. Sera reaches across the table, then - somehow despite her rather negligible height, she still seems to have rather long limbs, and snags a couple menus from where they are clipped with the napkins and salt and pepper. Hands one to Richard to peruse and starts her own review. Though she finds it rather hard to focus on words and pages when there are remarkable things happening in her peripheral vision.

Serafíne

When aren't you stoned? with an upside down smile. That question might be rhetorical but Sera looks up from her menu at Grace long enough to answer it. "When I'm fast. ing."

Which she kind of is now, though obviously not from, you know, drugs.

Tarrin Rasvelg

The one joy in his life is riding. There's something about roaring his motorcycle down a road that feels freeing. It's probably the concentration he needs, or the fact that no one is going to interrupt his moment, or it might just be that he can let his instincts take over.

He's paused at a light when he sees the impala. A car like that isn't something you see often, particularly not the dark blue one. Tarrin takes the option to meet up with its owner, and glides his ride over to park. The purr of the crockrocket comes to a close and he slides off, making his way into the diner as the helmet is brought to his side.

A leather jacket to keep away the wind is worn with a simple pair of jeans and a pair of boots. The 'sides' of his hair were turned into small braids and allowed to swoop back with the rest of the blonde locks. He didn't need to be invited; he knew Grace and Danny.

Danny

*He had to chuckle, he just didn't have a choice in that. It was happening before he could stop himself. Shaking his head a little to go with it. Then he smiled again at Sera.* Ahh, right... *he nodded sagely to that, remembering vaguely the last time he got wasted on a beach in LA, then the events after it with another chuckle.* Least you're having fun with it... *he lifted one hand to trace patterns in the air before Sera's eyes, his nails were black on that hand, shorter than the other one as he fanned out his fingers, opening his hand then closed it slowly before he repeated the process. If in doubt, play with the stoner, add to the visuals.

Then his attention was taken by Tarrin appearing in the door and the sound of the bike that went with it. His hand was still raised, still fanning and curling up his fingers then opening them into the fan again even as his eyes remained fixed on Tarrin, now that was nice distraction and he slid over in the seat once more making room for the man.*

Richard

Richard -- menu in hand, looking for chicken pot pie -- looks up as he catches motion out of the corner of his eye. It's Danny. He's wiggling his fingers around. Richard frowns. Under the table, he nudges Serafine's shoe with his own.

"Is that guy casting on you?" To the tune of, is that guy bothering you?

Grace

"I do remember Richard, though we didn't really meet meet," she says, then rights herself again. "I'm Grace. We should have a talk. We should all have a talk. Except Sera. Sera knows Ginger."

Oh, if only Grace knew how well Sera knows Ginger. It's the voice, see? All in the voice.

"I'd rather not talk about it in public, but you know. Sometime."

Danny

Note, no he's not casting at all, the motion is one of those things that stoners find just .... its like watching fish swim when you're stoned as well. You find your mouth opening and closing in time to the fish. (or I did anyhow)

Serafíne

That nudge ensnares Sera's attention. She's sitting there with her forearms braced against the edge of the booth and a menu in hand and Richard's searching for pot pies and Sera is - yes - fascinated by the way tracers of light smear in the wake of Danny's hand as he moves, such that she cannot quite unstick herself. But then: Richard, his foot against hers, and she breathes in and turns her head all sharp and fixes him with a look that takes far too long to achieve the final degree of focus, but what the hell.

She is: smiling, so wide that she looks more than a little bit haunted.

But what the hell, don't we all?

"No," to Richard. "He's not. I think he's trying to give me something to look at. Fuck if I know." Then Sera is nodding, agreement with Grace. "Ginger is Grace's phone sex line. You guys should totally talk. Some time. She's very private too so. You can say anything."

Tarrin Rasvelg

[forgot.. awareness]

Richard

"Richard," was his answer to Grace, some moments past. The introductions are short and sweet. Or at least: short.

"I thought Ginger was -- " Richard begins, but then stops. Penny drops. He smirks. "Oh, funny. Well," he flips his menu around, slides it over toward Serafine, taps with a finger. "I found the pot pie. Want to get two to-go?"

Tarrin Rasvelg

He slides in next to Danny, unzipping the jacket and sitting it behind him. "Hey Danny." He gives the guy a small nod, then one to Grace. "I have a package on the way for you. Don't let me forget." And then of course, there was Richard and Sera, two people he didn't know. He might have greeted them normally except...well at least Sera didn't look all the way there.

Danny

*No, he wasn't doing anything like that. It was merely one cultist playing with another's senses the way they always did. And he'd hope that some day Sera would do the same for him.

Then Tarrin was there, and he found it hard to move away from him again. The smile on his face growing even more, but eventually he shifted to give Tarrin just a touch more room, reluctantly though.* I won't let you forget... Is it... car related? *he lifted his other hand, the right to rest the elbow on the table and then leaned his chin on the upturned palm just staring for a while at the blonde beside him.* Have you met Sera and Richard?

Serafíne

Sera's resonance is: gut-wrenching, enthralling, and liminal, doorways and thresholds, this place between definitions, where constraints of identity have fallen (brief) away, and everything is made of possibility.

Grace

Oh. Sera. Grace's eyes open a touch wider, and her face starts tinging toward the red spectrum. Her phone sex line. Like she's some kind of telephone-based madam.

"A package? What? You bought something for me?" she says, and at least it's something to say that's not about Ginger.

Serafíne

So Tarrin. Hi Tarrin. Sera flashes him a peace sign with her left hand. Which also, quite incidentally, shows off the tattoos on her fingers and palm: scissors, the blades on the index and middle finger, the handles on the palm, one handle turning into or being consumed by a shark, whose tail curls down her wrist. And, the impression of script edging her palms.

Then back to Richard, "Yeah, let's get them to go. We've got Oktoberfest and still have some of that summer shandy left back at the house. So you get to be in whatever season you want. No more tyranny of time. C'mon."

And just like that she is unseating herself, reaching over to pull Grace closer for a brief, intimate little drop of a kiss on the crown of Grace's head.

"See you guys."

Tarrin Rasvelg

Tarrin looks between Grace and Danny for a moment, letting his lips curl into a small smile. "Yours..." He looks at Danny. "Is already in. And yes, it's car related." And to Grace he turned to give her a small nod. "Don't get excited. It's nothing big."

Finally he focuses on the other two. "No." Whatever semblance of smile he had having vanished. "Tarrin." The tattoos along her palms aren't ignored or unnoticed.

Danny

Yeah.. .seeya... *he drifted his eyes back to Sera with that smile.* Have fun with it.

*Then he was turning his gaze to the conversation and back to Tarrin as Grace and he spoke.*

OOooh... *He couldn't help that grin growing wider.* Oil and... *Yeah, now the grin was growing like the cheshire cats from Alice in wonderland... he just kept that smile and sighed softly.*

Richard

"Catch you later, Grace. Nice meeting you, Danny. Tarrin. We'll talk more next time, all right?"

He rises in Serafine's wake, like waves in sequence. Menus in hand, they head over to give kitchen their order. For a while they can be seen loitering around the waiting area, Serafine talking, Richard listening, Serafine animated, Richard subdued and smiling. Eventually their food arrives. Eventually they head out the way they came, and are gone.

In their wake, the air seems a little staler. A little less alive.

Stranger encounters.

Danny

*Luckily for the world at large, it was still warm during the day, well low 70s is warm isn't it? It's probably why he was sat in the outside of a restaurant at a table with a book in one hand and a glass resting on his leg being held by the other. He had on his usual oakley shades, was dressed in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled back, a black waistcoat (vest to you american types) and for a change to mix things up a bit, he also had on a pair of dark grey faded black skinny jeans. From the left hip of which a chain could be seen one ankle rested on the top of his other knee as he read, on his feet though were a pair of thongs.*

Hannah

She kept to the light areas. Whether the sun was sinking down or not, she kept to the light. The shadows, and the dark were not welcoming places. Her sneakers pressing into the sidewalk as she made her way through the people. "No I don't think that's what he meant." She said, her head tucked down a little as she walked. "I don't think he meant that the -" She went quiet. "Oh."

Hannah hugged her messenger bag against her hip, lifting her gaze up a little to see where she was going. The girl wore a dark skirt with a pair of blue stockings and a thin hoodie over a green shirt. A light green scarf was wrapped around her neck.

Danny

*Something almost on the edge of his reasoning alerted him. She. He lifted his head from the book he had in his hand and began to slowly take in the drifts of those around him. Just a casual interest on first appearances.*

Jennifer

*Perhaps it was Jennifer's purity that stood out from everyone else around her?*

Danny

Lubs on ma scary Sera!!

Hannah

"Oh..." She nodded her head softly. "I see it." Hannah lifted her head a little to look at the door of the restaurant. Danny's presence hadn't been noticed yet, nor Jennifer. It was only within the last few feet that she seemd to realize Danny was even partly nearby. Hannah came to a stop. A dead stop, no matter who was behind or in front of her. She let her eyes slide towards him, using her hair to keep her vision partly blocked.

Jennifer

*Jennifer takes out a bag with something in it. Is that a phone?*

Danny

*Purity... He blinked from behind those shades, tilting his head a little as he did so, seeing Jennifer he paused, paid attention, then moved his gaze on to see someone else. Flickering, the pair of them were both new, both something he'd find unexpected to say the least.*

Jennifer

*Jennifer

Jennifer

*Jennifer is poking awkwardly at the bag and looking confused.* "Where is that googlemap website?!"

Serafíne

Perception + Awareness.

Dice: 7 d10 TN5 (1, 4, 7, 7, 7, 8, 9) ( success x 5 )

Hannah

One. Two. Three steps to her left, away from Danny. Then a circle, half, just around towards the door. Not having Victor with her made this even more difficult.

Even at the door, she gave Danny a side look. She reached for the handle, moving her gaze towards it as someone decided they were going to come from the other side. With a small noise, Hannah scurried three steps to the left to avoid them. Her hands gripped the bag strap.

Danny

*And his eyes met with Hannah's, just a pleasant smile on his face as he began to watch her, then they moved to Jennifer, then back to Hannah, his drink was lifted lazily to his lips, he took a small drink from it, there were bubbles in it that broke the surface with tiny bursts of sensation on his tongue, then it lowered again with a soft clink of ice melting on top.*

Serafíne

Okay: I know Danny's resonance. Do Hannah or Jennifer have any resonance? If so, what is the flavor?

Danny

Hannah's is flickering.

Jennifers is Purity.

Jennifer

purifying

Hannah

[Yes! Sorry playtesting so didn't put it in. Dynamic - Flickering - 1]

Serafíne

"You lost?" There's a stranger who just got out of a cab a few feet from Jennifer, lighting a cigarette. Striking thing, with dark eyes rimmed in dark mark-up and a half-shaven head. Blonde curls, deliberately dark roots in waves halo the rest of her head all golden.

The cigarette has a spicy-sweet scent to it and dark blue paper. Something direct about her gaze, more direct than the rest of the strangers on the street who are deliberately avoiding contact with Jennifer, who looks both innocent and lost. Like most, they don't want to get involved.

Sera though. Oh Sera.

There is something about her. The way she bends the world.

Jennifer

*Jennifer looks up from the phone in a bag startled* "umm. yes. I cannot get my googlemap website to work. I need to figure out how to get to the Library from here."

Hannah

She dropped her eyes quickly, shifting her weight a little from one foot to the other. Once the door was clear, She ushered herself in quickly. The inside wasn't exactly an escape plan, as there were plenty of people there as well, but it was an escape plan from him...for the moment.

But now everyone was looking at her. Or at least, it felt that way. Hannah stepped towards the counter slowly, shifting the weight of the bag. "Um..a coffee. please. To go." It was the hardest thing to do, to order something to drink. "No milk. No.. no milk." Her head shook slowly. "Please."

Danny

*He raised one eyebrow, watching the quirky one go off into the building, then turned his attention back to Jennifer, ahhh... Sera had found her... that made him smile a little, almost a bit too much to be honest. So he swallowed it and rose from his seat to head over towards them, leaving his drink for a moment on the table. Probably not the wisest of things for him to do, but he did it anyhow and stood just on the periphery of their pairing, upnodding to Sera as he did.*

Danny

He had on his usual oakley shades, was dressed in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled back, a black waistcoat (vest to you american types) and for a change to mix things up a bit, he also had on a pair of dark grey faded black skinny jeans. From the left hip of which a chain could be seen one ankle rested on the top of his other knee as he read, on his feet though were a pair of flipflops.

Serafíne

"I'm shit with phones, man."

Still that direct look, which is broken just once as she turns her golden head to catch the movement of Danny's upnod in her periphery. And perhaps to follow/feel the flicker of Hannah's resonance as the other young woman heads inside, up to the counter.

There's a note of interest in her eyes, though. For all the profanity, a note of concern, slightly banked, attenuated somehow, wrapped up in her skin.

"What do you need at the library?"

Hannah

Coffee. It's all she needed. She was content with soymilk, even if it wasn't her preference, and plenty of sugar. Hannah wrapped her hands comfortingly around the cup and made her way out slowly, dodging to either side as people slipped in, and waiting, trying her best to hide in a little spot and yet...failing.

When she finally made it out of the building, she paused, taking in deep breaths. Light was fading and she was confined mostly to the street lights, and the lights from the buildings. This made her move a little, doing her best to avoid even the smallest of shadows.

Jennifer

" I was going to meet a friend there later." her voice is clear, but also quiet as if she is afraid of something about to get her.

Danny

*There was nothing here to be afraid of, well, that was partly true... if only because the biggest thing to be afraid of right now was fear itself. But wasn't it written some place that the only thing to fear, was fear itself, and it's the wise man that knows his fear.

He frowned just a little then turned partially to glance at Hannah, then to his table.* Come and sit down, I'm good with phones.

Jennifer

"oh, okay. can you teach me to use googlemaps website?"

*One would think she would say the Google Map app, but it was clear she was running it together and calling it a website*

Jennifer tentatively went closer to the table and handed over the bag with the phone. Upon closer inspection Danny could clearly see it was not just a ziplock bag, but some kind of bag a scientist or doctor might use to block radiation

Danny

That depends... *He eyed that bag with suspicion.* I'm not going to end up with radioactive... things... am I? *He didn't get much closer, just went back to his seat to sit down, putting his right foot onto his left knee again, what looked like musical notes had been tattooed onto the top of his right foot, perhaps that would explain the flipflops he wore.

His hand came out, waiting for the phone to be presented to him.*

Jennifer

Jennifer cocked her head to the side and looked a bit confused. "This is to keep you safer. If you use phones all the time it gives off radiation." She blushed "I was raised not being allowed to have a phone because it might hurt my brain development..... I haven't quite gotten over the teachings I guess. So that keeps me from getting any trace radiation or anything else from the phone that would normally come from it. So my phone is the safest one!"

Danny

*Well that got a reaction from Danny... Firstly, his eyebrows rose up slowly. Then one hand rose to run through those long dark tresses and then he tilted his head to study the girl. Then his hand moved down to his shades, to pull them down his nose slightly, he tilted his head again to peer at Jennifer over the tops of them levelly, there was the trace of a smile on his face as she finished going on about background radiation and phone signals, then not being allowed to grow up with such things... When he'd listened, she'd finished he lifted his head again and pushed his shades back up his nose.*

You're shitting me... right?

Serafíne

Sera flashes a half-lashed glance at Danny as he speaks up and remarks upon his expertise with phones. Then that look slides back to Jennifer, as if she were drawing a line between them. The tension between Jennifer's evident fear and innocence and her equally evident and immediate trust of complete and utter strangers ticks some half-open box somewhere inside Sera's head. The weirdness about Google Maps ticks nothing, though. It is absolutely nothing she herself would notice. There are times she's been too fucked up to remember how to use her iPhone.

--

But, for now, she sort of ambles over toward Danny as if she were - you know - ushering Jennifer. Keeping an eye on her, even as her attention is snagged, pulled out, drawn down the street again by Hannah's flickering resonance.

And Sera, like Danny, is impossible to ignore - it's not just her sharp features, the half-shaved head, the extraordinary eyes - it's the way she's dressed. Which has nothing to do with the current style and everything to do with her own: a black, French lace bra beneath an unbuttoned flannel over tiny leather skirt that barely covers her ass and seems to be made of safety pins and leather and nothing else. Fishnets, with visible garters, torn, naturally, and spike-heeled Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, with silver serpents just crawling up heels.

Ink visible on her arms, on her hands, the strangest assortment of random jewelry, and on and on.

Sera overhears Jennifer's explanation regarding the phone, and mutters,

"Oh my fuck."

beneath her breath.

Breathes out a cloud of smoke.

"I went to Catholic boarding school and not even the nuns were that batty."

Danny

Oh the irony... a virgin mage with the CoE.........

Danny

Two cult of ecstasy mages and a virgin walk into a bar.....

Hannah

It's the warmth that makes her feel at ease, even in a place where people come and go so easily. They're flashes in her vision. Movement from one side to the other. Feet, voices, all moving as individual units, and yet becoming one. Too much noise, too much movement. Hannah finds a seat and she plops right down in it, trying to breath slowly.

Her knees press against one another as she tries to take up as little space as possible, and yet remains visible to all. "I know." Her voice came in a whisper. "I know it is. But...but I'm scared." There's a beat as Hannah hangs her head, her long hair sliding around her face. Then she nods softly. "Ok."

The coffee is set on the pavement at her feet.

Jennifer

" I was raised in the mountains. It was just a few families and my mom was like a mayor and my dad was the preacher. I know I'm not like everyone around here. That is why I'm meeting my friend at the Library. He said he would help me out."

She allows Sera to lead her towards Danny. She needs someone to help with her phone so she can meet Elijah.

Okay Princess. *he nods soothing his voice down to a comforting sound, not understanding in the slightest, but it took all sorts to make the world work.* Let me see. *he holds his hand out again for the phone.*

Jennifer

As Jennifer hands Danny the phone she glances over and sees a girl trying to make a waif of herself. This girl seemed more afraid than she was. Jennifer felt bad for the girl and wondered how she could help her.

Danny

*He looked at the phone, then nodded and went to work on it.* Ahh okay, pretty basic when you come right down to it. Okay...

*He pulled up the wifi and opened that up to log into the roaming networks that were around and free.* Firstly, you see this? *he turns the screen back to her.* This allows you to connect to the internet. If you don't have this symbol up on the screen at the top here? No hapla anglais. It don't work. *Then he turned the phone back to himself again and began to bring up google, then showed it up to her.* Google. The almighty search engine for funny videos of cats to all manner of erm... information...

*he glanced at Sera for a moment, then his eyes flashed to Hannah, then back to Sera. Then he spoke to Jennifer again.* You need to forget about google maps though, if you go into your menu bar, you can see this icon. *he tapped the map..* This'll show you where you are, then if you type in the zip code of where you want to go, it'll direct you. Give it go? Go on, it won't bite you none.

Serafíne

There's this subtle flash from Sera. The briefest lilt upwards as Danny meets her eyes. The cigarette is less than half-finished but she stubs it out in a convenient ashtray and exhales another breath of spicy smoke.

More or less meeting Danny's gaze over Jennifer's head.

"Might want to find out a bit about her friend, too."

Jennifer didn't seem like the sort who should be out wandering alone in this world.

--

Then Sera turnss, pivots on those ridiculous shoes. And she's not the sort you'd expect to see talking to street people but the truth is Sera talks to all kinds. Down near the Church of the Good Shepherd the abuelitas all think that she is a prostitute trying to seduce their beloved priest. That is: well, not really precisely half-true, but comes close to some distorted mirror image of the truth.

So, Hannah, bunched up on the sidewalk, sparking, muttering to herself, wary as all hell, whom strangers are avoiding because who knows what the fuck someone talking to herself might do - what she might fling, what she might mean to them, what it might cost them to acknowledge her humanity - there she is.

Serafíne just ambles right up to her. Not too close, mind, but close enough to reach out and pick up the coffee cup and set it down again, closer to the girl.

More out of the ordinary path of foot traffic.

"Hey." Half-humming beneath her breath, Sera. "You okay?"

Jennifer finger pecked at the keyboard and typed in Denver Library. She then looked critically at the screen and pushed the enter button. The map zoomed out and she saw the path to the Library.

"YAY! Thanks!!"

Kiara

For all the tentative, unsure steps into the unknown being made tonight, there's one step, or a set of such, that are anything but. In fact, they resound with a surprising degree of assurance as they round a corner, coming upon the scene.

Enter, stage right, perhaps?

The footsteps belong to a female. Tall (at least in her heels she's something teetering on it), with dark hair, loose around her face tonight, lips painted fire engine red and dramatic eye makeup. There's a bundle of flyers tucked under an arm and her jacket licks at the heel of her boots. They too, are red, but worn out, faded. The leather tenderized by constant wear. She passes by the Café, her footsteps slowing only briefly, before she carries on past it to a streetlight just beyond.

Gathers items out of a pocket and begins to tape something to it. She feels like the first gust of breeze after the storm; vital, full of earth and rain and the remnants of the storm. A myriad of bracelets rattle around her wrists as she works. Bites the length of tape with her teeth and affixes it with nothing short of satisfaction.

Up close the flyer is familiar. They've been appearing in recent days. REIKI HEALING, bold letters proclaim at the world and if a poster could arguably shout its praises to the heavens, this one likely would.

Danny

Yeah you're welcome Princess. *he nodded, then moved his foot and nudged out a chair.* You seem to be new... this your first time in the smokes? *He picked up his drink again to take a long sip of the fizzy bubbled clear liquid and set it back down again before reaching into his pocket to pull out a cigarette and a zippo, then casually runs it down his thigh to light it, then blazes up the end of the cigarette in his mouth, a puff of blue grey smoke comes out.* What's your name?

Jennifer

I have to get to bed.

Hannah

She begins to slide her hand in her messenger bag to pull out a small notebook anda green colored pencil. "I know." She said softly. "I forgot." Hannah, sitting in a place where there was at least light, began to draw in her green colored pencil, just as Sera made her way up. Hannah slipped her eyes to look at Sera's feet, then turned them quickly back to her notebook. She curled in tighter.

"Yes. Yes. If I make the color go, it'll be ok. If the light stays. It'll be ok." She lifted her head up slowly to give Sera a smile, even if she avoided her eyes.

Hannah

"Use the color."

"Keep yourself calm."

"No one is going to hurt you."

"Someone's here."

"It'll be OK."

Jennifer

"yeah, I just came down a few weeks ago. Look I don't want to be late for Elijah. I'll see you around I guess!"

Jennifer skirted away not knowing that Danny had lifted her phone number while he was helping her with her phone.

She waved and slipped into the crowd and off towards the Library.

Serafíne is crouched, balancing on the most fucking incredible pair of studded black leather peep-toe booties, and truth, she has one hand braced on the sidewalk so she doesn't fall on her ass.

The fringe of her sidecut is canted toward Hannah. The rest of her hair shadows her sharp features.

She's still humming, and she's a little bit drunk and a little bit stoned and aware of things the way she is aware of things, with her skin-and-bones.

Her mouth is rather small and it is seamed now.

Thoughtful.

"Are you trying to get somewhere? Are you in trouble?"

Hannah

Hannah shook her head, hair tossing around her face as she did. "No. No place yet. I had to leave. They wanted a place of theirs. Victor couldn't come." She doodled nothing in particular, just lines for the moment, staring at the color on the paper. "Now the darkness makes it hard. If we want to go, the darkness is there. It's where they hide. Hard to dance in the light when the sun goes away,"

Hannah lifted her eyes again, never making eye contact. Her attention dropped to Sera's shoes and her drawing stopped. Her lips tightened. "Don't you hear them cry?"

Kiara

[Hm. Are we paying attention, Kiara?]

Dice: 4 d10 TN6 (1, 3, 6, 10) ( success x 2 )

Danny

*He nodded, watching Jennifer go, then turned his attention partially back to Sera and where Hannah could just about be seen with a soft shake of his head at how she managed to stay up on those damned heels.

How, well, it would be more difficult if she ate less like a sparrow he guessed, but with the cigarette taking his attention away periodically, he kept his eyes drifting along. Take a pull on the smoke, hold it for a few seconds, then let it go and let the smoke drift casually as he did so. Then take another pull on the smoke, rinse and repeat.

His eyes moved to pick up Kiara, tilting his head as he watched her hang up and bind some sign to a post, then back to Sera and Hannah for a short while.

Smoking, it was really that simple; inhale, hold it breath it out. His other hand reached for the drink again to take another sip.*

Ian

Sometimes one could go days wandering the city and not run into another Awakened will. Other times? It was like someone stuck a giant flashing beacon down on the street corner.

Ian was focused on his phone as he walked, so he didn't immediately sense the presence of the other mages up ahead. As he moved, he slid nimbly between passing pedestrians, not bothering to look up as he stepped out of the way. His index finger swiped quickly across the screen as he typed.

And then.

As he drew near the outdoor cafe, Ian stopped and looked up. His eyes searched the area and found faces he recognized (Sera, Danny) as well as some he did not. After a moment, he pocketed his phone. Sera looked as though she was occupied with the dark-haired girl on the sidewalk, while Danny was seated alone at one of the tables. Ian shot a lingering glance in Kiara's direction (she was something new and curious) as he walked up to Danny's table.

"Busy night," he commented dryly.

Danny

Its becoming that way. *He nods and finally it was getting dark enough to remove the shades, so he did the next best thing, he slide them up into his hair on top of his head.* How's it going. *he stubbed out the cigarette onto the ashtray and looked at the guy.*

Serafíne

This noise in the back of her throat, a quiet hum. Sera is - well - wobbling somewhat but still steady beneath it. Her mouth curls into this half-edged smile though, because she has diagnosed, absolutely diagnosed, Hannah's problem.

"I think you're having a bad trip. You'll be okay, though."

The vibrant edge of her magic in the air, wreathing around her. That humming noise again.

It's a delicate thing sometimes, playing coy to the world when the world is speaking right back to you. Kiara, for her part, feels her brows knit in, what would it be -- consternation, consideration -- her eyes journeying away from her task across the street, flitting, feeling with as much focus as as she can before she resumes her task, pressing her flyer firmly to the cool surface of the street light before stepping back to admire her work.

She rolls her shoulders, tilts her neck to one side, then another and after a beat turns and walks directly toward the table with the assembled awakened. Toward, and, after catching the eye of perhaps all at least in passing with a suggestive little smile banking there in the corner of her mouth passes by them and sweeps toward the counter.

There's a hint of something vaguely like intense that follows her; it's hard to put a finger on exactly. Like spices and flowers, left to their own devices for days. Decay and reformation, perhaps.

Serafíne

(Hey: I think that should be enough. Up to you what you do with it. I gotta sleep because I work early in the morning, but I wasn't sure how to react to Hannah's posts and maybe now she can interact with the others!)

Serafíne

And: Sera hails a cab. Maybe the same one she just climbed out of. She has somewhere to be.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is lounging at a booth. There is a tall, slender glass that seems to contain mostly crushed ice. A little paper umbrella lies near the glass, still opened. Bright orange with pink flowers. Kalen is holding a tablet, fiddling with it.

He's wearing jeans and a rust-colored hoodie that looks more appropriate for ten degrees colder judging by what the rest of the population is wearing. He seems indifferent to the rest of the population though, only looking up occasionally outside of catching movement out of the corners of his eyes or hearing footsteps. And rather seems oblivious to the fact that people tend to come to bars to interact with other people. Other people who are not the bartenders.

Danny

*He'd gotten in to ask if he could do a short set, just one or two songs. It hadn't taken much for him to be given the nod, he'd ordered his usual poison, red bull was in it as usual. Then he'd gone to get set up with a high stool and his guitar. A black beast that had strangely enough when the switch was flipped and she was connected to an amp lit it up so it looked like liquid lava had pooled and was cooling on the body. It looked like someone had partially melted it in places. Tonight he was performing, did they know that there was a rising star in their midst? Probably not. He slipped off his leather jacket and set it down on the back of the stool, then took a seat. Just a few strums, one or two of the chords to check the keys were still on the right note, then he began to play.*

He's a stranger to someAnd a vision to noneHe can never get enough,Get enough of the one

For a fortune he'd quitBut it's hard to admitHow it ends and beginsOn his face is a map of the worldOn his face is a map of the worldFrom yesterday, it's coming! From yesterday, the fear! From yesterday, it calls himBut he doesn't want to read the message here

Kalen Holliday

Kalen glances up at the sound of music starting. His attention catches for a few seconds when he recognizes Danny as someone he's met before, but only a few seconds. He's hardly deaf, but you don't need to look at a performance to hear it. Sure, there's visual elements, he knows that. You don't live with a musician for years and not know that.

He spends only a moment with that. Then goes up to the bar and returns with not one but two rocks glasses with whiskey in them, sets both down, resettles, and takes the tablet back out of his bag to resume working. What would Kharisma say about refusing to stop and appreciate the moment? Serafine? Ian? He tries. He does. But all he can think of in response to wonder what those listless ghosts Alexander told him about would have given to hear this. How many more are there now? How many will there be?

And after that? There are always more monsters. Always more bodies and more ghosts.

They aren't even safe when they're dead. He knows that now too. There are monsters in this life and monsters in the afterlife and everywhere, everywhere there are things that make it nearly impossible to just focus on anything.

Danny

*The song was over far too soon, he was hunched over the guitar, one knee on the bar of the stool, the other on the floor tapping time on habit. But he was happy. He trod on the FX pedal and worked into the next song after taking a sip from the drink, that too was over all too soon for him. He smiled, a glance to the booth then back to the room and the people that were in it, some had stopped to listen, some where still having their conversations. He rolled up the shirt sleeve, the tattoo's on his arm in evidence. Then he struck the next cord, this one was about the same pace as the song before it.*

A hundred days have made me older. Since the last time that I saw your pretty face.

A thousand lies have made me colder. And I don't think I can look at this the same. *his fingers picked the melody, dancing round his voice while he sang, his eyes half closed. His foot tapping in time to the music.*

Kalen Holliday

Kalen pauses at reading through news stories. He watches Danny for a moment while he considers something. And for some people, it would be whether to try to get Danny's attention. How to respond to the fact that he is a phenomenal musician. But Kalen...Kalen is thinking that if he could justify sending someone into the Black Orchid, Danny wouldn't be the worst choice.

If.

But no. Grace has a thing and Alexander has investigations and these Mages in Denver...they are not like the ones who trained him. They will do this differently. Perhaps with less blood.

He could live with that.

Danny

I'm here without you baby, but you're still on my lonely mind, I think bout you baby and I dream about you all the time.

I'm here without you baby, but you're still with me in my dreams and tonight,; it's only you and me.

*He lifted his foot onto the bar as well, his eyes lifting to watch the effect of the song on the crowd. Sure, it might be better with another voice to counter his, but he didn't have that option tonight, perhaps that's why he was playing this set. His arm lifting to strum the notes in perfect timing. The notes that he picked out did the job for him instead. His faded grey jeans, the black shirt he wore, a beaded bracelet around his wrist, the guyliner, tonight he looked a little more like his stage persona. A pair of silver tipped cowboy boots finished the look. Thankfully he'd gone without a hat, that'd have just been corny. He finished that song too. Tempted to break into something else, but no, he just played a few notes to hint at something else. Then slipped the strap from his neck and set the guitar on the stand near the bar, a nod to the tender to keep an eye on it and turned the amp off. He'd not missed the other glass by Kalen. The crowd were pleased and took their share of applauding him, he bowed to them as he made his way off the stage, some of them patting his back as he slipped into the seat.*

Kalen Holliday

Kalen looks up when he sits, holds his eyes for a second. In the dimness of the bar, his green irises are so pale it is hard to tell they have any color at all. And then he nods, barely perceptibly.

"Bravo." It is, likely, the most understated praise of the evening.

"I got you a proper drink. Though you may already have dissolved your tastebuds with redbull, making it impossible for you to properly appreciate it."

Hello, Kalen. Some people...they say hello.

Danny

*He chuckled and picked up the drink, then took a long sip of it after raising it in toast to Kalen.* I appreciate it, thanks. Really? People have tastebuds? Over rated. *He smirks and sets the glass back down.* Thank you. *But he folds over the table, one hand on his heart as he bowed in his seat.* So how's things? *he himself had molten brown red mahogany eyes And his face, well, angelic and alluring would probably just about describe it. His nails as usual were black. One hand, his left, his fretting hand had shorter nails, while the right, the picking hand he'd just shown to have with such expertise were longer.*

Don't get me wrong, I do drink things other than coffee, I just have my vice and I can't help it. I've progressed to tattooes now instead. *That smile came back, or had it never really left?*

Kalen Holliday

Kalen huffs at that dramatic little bow. "The world remains as she has always been, full of infinite possibility. As evidenced by her current state...infinite possibility isn't, in all manifestations, exactly the blessing people might imagine."

Up arches one eyebrow. "Am I going to have to teach you to drink proper coffee too? You are seriously such high maintenance. You're lucky you're pretty."

Danny

*At that he really did laugh. throwing his head back with his eyes closed then he shook his head still chuckling.* I'm a well trained coffee junky. It's all good.

*He smiles more picking up the drink to take another sip from it.* Lets put it this way.. I got through school on a coffee bean, I get through most things with a coffee buzz. *He shrugged.* Can't help it, I'm just that little bit wired that way. *he held his other index finger and thumb a smidgen apart in emphasis.*

So what brings you here tonight? I mean, it's hardly as if you knew I'd be here.

Kalen Holliday

"Oh. Welcome to Denver, the land of extraordinary coincidences. You'll get used to this. It happens all the time." He smiles a bit.

Now what? Right.

"How are you?"

Danny

Finding my feet? *He shrugs a bit still smiling at the question.* I've yet to find a few places, but I'm sure they'll reveal themselves in time. They always do. And you'd be surprised how coincidental I can be. Time is fleeting.. *he shrugs.* turn it around, flip it on a pinhead and let it shoot out all over the place.

*On his right wrist, the one that wasn't marked with Musica Delenit Bestiam Feram had the infinity symbol tattooed onto it. It appeared he had a clockpiece on the inside of his left elbow as well that could be seen. Hours of intricate work.*

Kalen Holliday

"Well. That is certainly a way to approach the subject." Kalen says with some amusement.

"I don't doubt you'll find places to play, you're not half bad." And then a slight shrug. "I meet so many musicians in Denver."

Danny

It must be some kind of mecca. *he chuckles.* and thank you for the compliment. *He turned his head, watching the world go past slightly in that little bubble they had, then his attention was back on Kalen.* So what makes you think I'm high maintenence? I might be easy and mellow to deal with for all you know.

Kalen Holliday

"Well. I suppose there are more demanding things in the world than teaching you to drink something that doesn't taste like battery acid." He regards Danny for a few seconds, by all indications serious. "Please tell me that you at least grind your own coffee? I will, for now, forgive you if you use one of those terrible drip machines."

Serafíne

Danny

*He gags slightly at the notion.* Puuurlease... *He gives the guy that level serious look he's capable of when in need.* I would rather drink puddle water than percolate. No, the first thing I did when I got here was buy three things. A grinder, and a decent espresso machine, the last was a good milk steamer. I can't write music without a decent blend in my hand to work with. *He grinned after that. He didn't tell the connoisseur about the starbucks he raided on a semi daily basis though. Didn't dare!*

Danny

My what a flashing resonance that is... like a strobe light.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen nods. "Very well. I suppose there is hope for you yet." He still sounds serious. He still mostly looks serious. But he is only trying so hard, and there is a bit of twitching at the corners of his mouth.

"How are you finding the city so far?"

Danny

Well.. *he lifts his chin and raises his hand to rub it slightly then lowers his hand again.* It's not quite what I thought I was expecting. Mind you, I'm not sure what I was expecting, probably more stetsons and the such, but no, on the whole it's okay. I've not met anyone that's given me cause to worry yet... despite your best attempts. *he smiles again, recalling their last meeting and Kalen's comment about being eaten.*

Serafíne

It has been: weeks since Sera and Kalen saw each other. The last time was in a park, at Twilight, the edges of the sky seamed with light, everything else sunk into darkness. She was fine, you know? and it was chaotic and strange and fucked up and disorienting and they all knew from the wrenching immediacy of her resonance and her sudden-knowledge that something had happened. Though not, perhaps, what.

--

She is: a bit thinner now, though perhaps that is hard to see. Just a kind of sharpness to the already sharp bone structure of her face. Something taut or perhaps clarified, because she is not eating as much as she should, and this has taken on, in some ways, the cast of ritual. Which does not mean that she is fasting, precisely, as her first stop when she slips into the bar is, you know, the bar itself, where she tucks her arms against the edge and beckons the 'tender over and murmurs something and pays something and waits for something.

Oh, she is aware of the brightness of Danny's resonance. Kalen's tumult. Aware of them right down to the finest little bones of her inner ear. Senses them as stars flung out on some spiral-worked arm of whatever galaxy she inhabits.

She'll be on her way over, soon.

Kalen Holliday

"Oh. Well, shall have to-"

But then, there is Serafine, and he pauses and breathes in the sense of her. He turns to watch her, eyes on the light and shadow playing over her face and those always sharp bones. He knows how close her ribs always are to the world, has always thought that perhaps it is some physical correspondence to the way her heart is always so close to the world. He knows how those ribs fit, their curves a little too evident, against the palm of his hand.

"Try harder." But his eyes, his attention really, is still on Serafine. Danny is entertaining. Danny is also stunning. But Serafine...Serafine is like stars. She has gravity. Light.

And one day, perhaps, she will explode into a great blaze of light. And then all of that light will collapse in on itself and then all of the world around it will follow. Fall into whatever place the light went.

What in all of the world wouldn't want to follow that kind of brilliance anywhere?

Danny

*He shook his head softly and took another drink of the whatever it was that Kalen had gotten for him, his head turning to look where Kalen was... yes he'd picked up the entrance, but now he picked up the body that came with it and had to nod his approval.* Friend of yours? *He asked quietly, turning his attention back to Kalen, then waited to see if the man was as captivated as he appeared to be.*

Serafíne

What she is waiting for is a bottle of tequila, and a trio of shotglasses and a lowball glass full of lime slices. Wheedles some maraschino cherries out of the bartender, too. The sticky pink syrup clings to the lime slices and stains the glass, in a way that makes her smile this rather still and rather private smile, entirely meant for herself.

She seems so tall, so attenuated, but that has something to do with the five inch heels on the thigh-high leather boots she's wearing, black naturally, and laced up all around with silver chain. A short leather skirt, a plaid bustier, a torn Jesus and Mary Chain t-shirt and a worn black hoodie complete the look. Her wrists are stacked with these colorful Moroccan bracelets, covered in little diamonds of mirror, which catch the light and gleam with every movement. She has a bike chain wrapped 'round her neck, mixed with a strand of genuine tahitian pearls, by way of further adornment.

Sera picks up the bottle by its neck and the shot glasses by their rims and balances the low-ball glass with its lime slices and too-red cherries by gathering it up and wedging it against her body, between her wrist and her ribs and armed with all of this bounty nips away from the bar and starts toward Kalen and Danny. Swaying a bit.

Kalen Holliday

"That," Kalen says softly. "Is Serafine. She also sings."

He notes the sway, but Sera swaying a bit isn't precisely abnormal. He watches her, but she is coming to them with a bottle of tequila and a bowl of limes and shot glasses. Maraschino cherries. He wonders, briefly, if he could convince her to eat a salad with tangerines and those ridiculous cherries and almond slices. Some kind of crazy vinaigrette. Does vinaigrette come in blackberry? If so, if nothing else, he should get some for Grace.

He slides across the bench in the booth, into the corner, so Sera has room to join him. Of course, she could also join Danny, he supposes. Of course, it is Serafine. Perhaps she will perch on the table like some mythic creature that has no use for such common things as benches. How would he know until she's done it?

Danny

*His faded grey jeans, the black shirt he wore, a beaded bracelet around his wrist, the guyliner, tonight he looked a little more like his stage persona. A pair of silver tipped cowboy boots finished the look.* Oh she does? *he nods as well at that and smiles when the woman makes her way over, then notes that Kalen made room for her, and my what goodies she has!! He finishes his drink with a long glug, then flicks it aside to the table near the wall.*

Serafíne

The sway is far from unusual. It could be just the effect of gravity on someone wearing heels like that. They're harder to walk about in than most people, men at least, understand, but she walks with the the same raw physical confidence as if her feet were flat on the ground.

And it's a Saturday night, still pretty fucking early, all things considered, but it seems likely that she has started in on something, somewhere, for some reason, and she comes up to the table and puts her bottle of tequila quite solidly down and then the glass of limes and cherries follows and finally the shot glasses, this little trio of an array, spread out to catch the light.

"Hey," Sera to Kalen, flashing Danny a peace sign like a goddamned hippie, or maybe just showing off the sharkscissors tattoo on the palm of her hand, as she slides in beside Kalen. No, she doesn't really believe in benches, but they are there for a reason, and she smiles at Danny across the table and then slews a look over to Kalen beside her and studies his pale face in the bar's uncertain light and inhales in a way that tells anyone who has ever gone drinking before that these will not be her first shots of the night and leans veryvery close to Kalen and murmurs something to him, that Danny might overhear if he tries to listen in.

Serafíne

Murmured, "Are you guys on a date? I'm not interrupting?"

Kalen Holliday

Kalen smiles a little as she climbs onto the bench with him and then he listens to her murmured questions and then he laughs. He leans into her to murmur back. Danny saw Lucy touch Kalen. And he certainly permitted that. He'd even smiled. But there is something different about how he responds to Serafine, and it isn't just the warmth. He trusts her. All the watching he does, every movement of hers he tracks, there is not even a hint he wonders what her intentions might be.

And then, despite the fact that Serafine has all that gravity, he does look away from her, toward Danny. He does reach out to rest his hand against the curve of her ribs - because gravity. "Serafine, Danny. Danny, Serafine."

Kalen Holliday

"No, and no. But it is charming you think I could be on a date. I think you may be one of three people who think I'd ever manage a thing like that."

Danny

*He knew about people and he knew about gravity but it was fascinating to see it all in action. It made him smile as he watched them together, she was certainly entrancing and he found himself leaning his chin on his upturned left hand, his elbow on the table as he watched them, then blinked when the introductions were made.* Hey.. *his hand detached temporarily from the chin to wave his fingers slowly just the once.* Good to meet you. Kalen says you're a musician as well?

Serafíne

"Not much of one, these days," Sera to Danny, this quick little smile on her mouth that finds a moment's purchase in her dark eyes. "We've never come up with a name for the band and haven't played out anywhere in weeks. Me and my housemates noodle around a bit though, yeah."

She is: thinner than Kalen remembers, yes. Her ribs fractionally closer to the surface. His hand folds over the cursive lines of some script tattoo that crawls up her flank, whose letters are too concealed by her posture, the bustier, and the tattered remnants of her old band t-shirt to make out.

And her head is canted toward Kalen as he leans closer to her to murmur back and there is a scissoring moment when she tips her golden head a bit more upright to meet Kalen's pale gaze. Then she glances across the table at Danny, all direct.

"I asked Kalen if you guys were on a date." She is busy now, see. Distributing the shotglasses. She likes the way her lungs feel, so she breathes in again, warm body sliding beneath the skim of Kalen's hand. "He said no." A smile, across the table, just for this stranger. " - tell me he's wrong, Danny."

Danny

*He nodded to that.* Yeah, names can be a pain in the ass when you just can't find the right one. Something that sounds pretentious, or dull, or just isn't the right thing. *Then his eyebrows shot up in surprise.* Uh.. Well... *he had to laugh at the baldness of her question.* If we are on a date, no body told me. Mind you, the first time we met he told me we were on a date... So... *He shrugs, his hands uplifting in a helpless cute little shrug.* Beats me?

Kalen Holliday

Kalen makes a little huff somewhere between amusement and indignation when Sera tells Danny about the question and then starts that. "Hey!"

And then he turns those pale eyes on Danny. "Metaphorically speaking. Don't help her. Your introduction to Denver really shouldn't be figuring out how alarmingly not like human I am sometimes. Seriously. You seem lovely. And you are very pretty. But I am...both driven and broken in ways that make it basically impossible to date me.

"Serafine...has too much faith in me. For which I adore her." And see here, here, even though she is meddling and even though he is trying to undo her meddling, he wraps an arm around her and pulls her, briefly, against his side. He does adore her. Partly because practically no one here will fight for him at all. Ian wouldn't let him die. Serafine won't let him not live. They are such different things. He doesn't know how not to love either of them.

"Besides. I think we might have to meet on purpose for it to be a date." He glances at Sera. "And I don't have his number. So this is clearly, clearly not a date."

Serafíne

Everything that Danny says about band names is fucking true but Sera does not give him one of those strange empathetic half-smiles and chime in on the truths he utters. And anyway the band doesn't have a name for other reasons that Sera also: cannot name, or perhaps refuses to name. The band without a name is: provisional, you see, transitional, free.

Sera smiles at Danny, across the table. She's picking up her bottle of tequila, scooting forward on the bench seat to reach, because the illusion of height that her heels give her naturally disappears when she sits. For all her boldness there is something fragile about her tonight and as this is the first time Danny and Sera have met, perhaps he will think that fragility native to her.

"That wasn't a no," Sera is saying to Danny across the table when Kalen wraps her up and pulls her against him. From her: a film of resistance that feels - taut, consumed, unnatural - before it breaks apart, dissolves itself beneath her skin.

"Everyone's driven and broken, Kalen." She's pouring him a shot, lifting her chin to glance up at him, her dark eyes shadowed by dark lashes, straight brows curled in inquiry. Or challenge. "Doesn't mean you can't share a drink."

A flash back at Danny.

"Or exchange numbers. Right?"

Danny

*He chuckled again at that, the smile still on his face, sometimes it was hard to just not smile at all. Clearly in their own special way they were devoted to each other.*

Don't make me go up on that there stage and play something just for the pair of you!! *he threatens with a laugh as he points at the stage of sorts, then he shakes his head with another laugh.* Digits I can do. But promises I can't. I'm driven too in my own way, slave to the music within I'm afraid. And she's a fickle and difficult mistress. But she has her wonderful side too. Like just before the dawn when you slip out for a smoke and the sky is just on that dark side of light. You know, when it's that slate colour of black, the sort that sort of warms you to the new day coming.

*Then it was as if he caught was he was saying and he sighed.* See? Even when I'm not writing, I'm writing. *he shrugged again.*

Kalen Holliday

There is a look at the edge of resistance, a slight narrowing of his eyes. He looks over the sharpened line of her cheekbones again. Sometimes they are nothing alike. Sometimes they are alike. Rarely.

But he doesn't ask her now. His expression smooths back out, melts back into that same expression he used when he was playing with Danny before in ways that suggest if he tried he could have held a normal-looking conversation, if not meant it.

He flashes Danny a smile, as though this getting his number was the victory he wanted. Look, Sera. You are winning. And see, because you can't ever seem to help but see everything, he is letting you win.

He turns back to Sera. "Very well. He makes no promises, and I am very careful of mine. You know that. One date, I promise. I will invite him and if he agrees I will even go. One."

Serafíne

Serafíne hums her acknowledgment of her goddamned victory and pours another shot. The tequila's sharp scent bright in the air, all the volatile compounds oily against the liquid. Then a third. She's good at this. She knows just when to stop before the shots spill over the edges of the shot glasses and then she nudges them around the table, lines them up. Preens maybe a little bit - lovely - enthralling, right? as the gentlemen decide to exchange numbers.

"Nobody has to make any promises," she tells them both, though her gaze catches more on Kalen's eyes than on Danny's. She is trying to tell him that she is okay. Or at least, that she is getting there. "I just thought you'd enjoy each other's company."

And she picks up her shot glass. Clinks it against the others. Inhales a great big breath. And throws it back.

Savors the burn.

Danny

*He picks up the drink and slams it back then down onto the table upside down, the way he was taught to by... someone. A slight cough at the burn of it before he grins again.* You're trying to get me drunk.. I've got to drive later and I'm not going to leave my car here... *he chuckles again, then realises his cards were in his jacket.. which were on the chair up there. One finger is held up as he gets to his feet slowly and makes his way through the crowd to go get it, then gets his guitar to go with it.*

Kalen Holliday

"Well. Aside from the part where you forget I'm impossible, you seem to know me remarkably well. Maybe we would. He is entertaining, after all." He smiles for Sera, and it is a real smile. Maybe he didn't make her really fight for that win, but he doesn't seem unhappy with this one date promise. Sure, he assumes there won't be a second date. But...hey. It's Kalen. He also assumes he'll be dead by 30.

Of course, he thought that number was 20 once, and look at how he was wrong there.

"Sera tries to get everyone drunk. It's a hazard of being around her, the liver damage. She's worth it though."

Serafíne

"I'm not - " insistent, see, after Danny throws back the first shot and insists that she is trying to get him drunk and that he cannot get drunk and that he has to drive and he is not leaving his car here, downtown, damnit. Then he's getting up to go grab his jacket and guitar and her dark eyes spike up to follow his progress and she glances back at Kalen, who is not unhappy with the promised date and who assumes that there will not be a second date and that's fine. Look how many times the world proves you wrong, Kalen.

"I'm not trying to get him drunk," Sera is telling just Kalen now, because Danny left the table. She is doing it with this exagerrated certainty, punctuated and alive and oh, hey, a litle bit drunk herself. Empty stomach and tequila and all. It doesn't take long until she's floating, floating, floating.

"I'm getting him drunk." Still with drunken certainty. "Who drives to a bar, anyway? Take a cab." Which is a mantra for Sera on par with safe sex. Usually.

Danny

*When he came back he had his ax with him, the strap over his shoulder as he had his jacket over his other arm. The jacket his thrown into the corner, while he carefully lifts his guitar to have it across his knee's at the table and pushes himself right back into the seat to make sure there's no scratches or chance of it being knocked. The pattern even while it was switched off was impressive the lava flow and bubble black and grey in the odd light that the bar was in. On habit his fingers twitched as they hit the strings absently, he couldn't help it, it was like a tourette's twitch, something he had to do, his fingers danced on his left hand as he ran a short but fast riff then stilled the strings. Then he leaned and reached for a card from his jacket after watching the pair of them again and slide a card across the table in Kalen's direction.* There you go. *Drothe it said on it. Just a name and numbers. Nothing else, no address. Just that. Now anyone that listened to music or had their nose to the music scene might well recognise that particular name. * So... You were saying? Liver damage? *He grinned and reached for a slice of lime to chew on.*

Kalen Holliday

Kalem looks at the card, so similar to his with its lack of titles or addresses, and smiles. He slips it into the bag at his feet, and then glances at Sera.

"Well. He doesn't scare easy. He might survive Denver. And me. It's promising." Look at that praise.

Kalen laughs and takes a shot of tequila. "Liver damage. I think we have people for that, though."

Serafíne

Sera has already tossed back her first shot and poured another one. Right now she doesn't bother with the lime and there is still that exagerrated care about her, framing each action, as if she were made of both cotton wool and half-shattered glass that she had to be leary of disturbing and she is very focused on the shot glasses and inhaling again, pours Kalen and Danny each other as they toast each other or whatever about the possibilities of liver damage, while Sera ignores them, or at least that part of their banter.

She does not toast to liver damage, no.

She glances at the card that Danny slides across the table toward Kalen and she knows the name, of course she does. Flicks her dark eyes back up to Danny's face and lets them rest there, then drops them to the guitar as he flexes his fingers up and down the neck in that instinctive riff.

The edge of her mouth sliding, ironic, sweet in its way.

"I don't see what's scary about Denver. Or you, Kalen." Sera returns, lifting her second shot glass, holding it very carefully about the rim and toasting, "To new friends. And the date I engineered."

Okay, that was a little smug.

"I get to officiate at your wedding, you know. If you get married. That's like the fucking rules." Then, to Danny - "Your guitar's so cool, man. How'd they do that?"

Danny

*He chuckled again, the fingers of his left hand still on the strings as they idled and tapped out a tune that slid its way into his head, he flicked off the right hand slightly as if dismissing that comment about the liver damage but grinned.* It's all in the mind, damage is just one more thing on the list of the many to take us all to bits before we get put back together and dance our own little decadence dance.

*Then he looked at Sera.* I can't leave my car here, c'mon.. *Oh god, yeah, alcohol was a great liberator and his of his right hand found the strings as well and he danced them, both hands moving as he founds chords, stretched out the fingers of his left hand, then strummed out a little riff of chords, making the guitar sound like it was laughing as well.* WEDDING?! *Now he had to laugh to go with it!* HOLY SHIT woman!! You're trying to make me an honest to god married off man? Either you're nuts or your an evil genius hell bent on world domination!

Denver's cool in its own way.. and I already figured out that Kalen is Blofeld. *his right hand moves to pick up the glass and he downs that too screwing up his face in that cute little grimace before sticking his tongue out and the glass goes back onto the table upside down again. Then it went back onto the strings as if the alcohol was just another means to tapping into that rich vein of music.

He laughed again.* Fucked if I know! Just kind of said what I saw in a dream once and that was it... picked her up a few weeks later... ain' she fucking darlin? *he stroked his baby, leaning in to rest his head on the board with that cute pleased smug bastard grin, like he'd made it himself.*

Kalen Holliday

"If we get married, you can co-officiate. But Ramon might be disappointed if I don't let him help." He sighs. "Well. Actually. He probably can't help. Nevermind. It's all you then."

He raises his glass to their and then takes that shot too. No lime. No salt.

He settles back with a smile. "Although. We may have to see other people too. I don't believe in monogamy and he clearly has some kind of existing relationship with that guitar."

Serafíne

Sera has no idea whom Blofeld might be and responds to Danny's outburst with mildly drunken glance that has enough blank in it to be either charming or frustrating. He remarks that she is either nuts or an evil genius and something about her goes strange at his pronouncement, and that strangeness does not and will not leave her for some small time.

And then there are shot glasses to be refilled and she is pouring again, her spine a bit hunched, her shoulderblades back.

"He's right, you know," this to Danny. "You do have quite the relationship with that guitar."

Then a more present glance, sidelong, lashed, toward Kalen. "You don't believe in monogamy. Why not?"

Danny

*He laughed even more at that and sat up again, then lifted his right hand to push his hair back out of his face with a soft sigh.* Well, I do believe I'm getting wasted.... Not what I had planned... but... *he shrugged.* shit happens, right? Ahh monogamy... the best way to piss off everyone around you, becoming so totally into someone you can't talk about anyone or anything else. *Did he notice the effect his words had on the girl? Not in the slightest. He picks up the next glass and salutes her with it.*

Uh... To.... *Now he has to think and gets this comical sort of thinking look on his face, staring above their heads.* To every one we've ever known.

*Well he thought it was good and downed it anyhow.* I do yes, but that's because she's probably the best guitar I've ever had. I might go buy an N4 some time, but... *he shrugged.* Washburns have their moments. This... this is mine. This is the image I had and her pickups are just plain old perfect. I couldn't want for a better beast. *He runs his fingers down the fret board again.*

Kalen Holliday

Kalen shakes his head a little at that definition of monogamy.

"Honestly," he says to Sera, "It just sort of happened that I ended up dating this couple that was very...it was very open. It's less open now, a bit. For them, anyway. I'm kind of - it's complicated. But...mostly, everyone I dated wasn't monogamous and it didn't seem like something I really necessarily was concerned about."

Danny's toast gets a slightly odd look, because he just had two shots of tequila on top of what he'd already had and he was just being not really guarded with Sera and.... But he nods after a few seconds of perfect silence, and raises his new tequila shot. "To everyone we've ever known." And there is a softness to that. But then, most of the people he's ever really known are dead.

Serafíne

Here's the thing. Danny tosses out his toast without much thought, or perhaps with the kind of thought that goes along with getting drunk with strangers, with banter, with the atmosphere where the world slews together and peels itself apart. Kalen repeats it, with that softness in his voice that blurs lines and has an ache of sorts behind it, because some portion of everyone he's ever known is dead.

Sera's too-sharp features have softened too and there's the burn of the tequila in the back of her throat and inside her the strangest and absolutely sudden urge to cry that she swallows down, and closes her eyes, holding the drink up, breathing, smiling this close-mouthed smile, so interally focuses for these passing seconds until she breathes out. Says,

"Hear hear," because you have to say something, and throws another shot back. She's had nothing to eat today. That shot hits her and makes her head spin but Kalen tells her honestly and she hum/huffs out a breath, using the shot glass to gesture in Danny's direction, before turning back to Kalen.

"So, it's not that you don't believe in monogamy then, right? Just that you don't think it's necessary. Right?"

Ian

[Oh right, Awareness]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (2, 5, 9, 9, 9, 10) ( success x 4 )

Ian

Technically, it was Emma's fault that Ian was at the bar that night, but Emma wasn't with him when he got there and, if her texts were anything to go by, she might very well not show up at all. It was just verging on chilly as Ian stepped out of his car, and a brisk autumn wind cut through the fabric of his shirt. The sky was dark, but the university district was bright and lively around him. Ian pocketed his keys and walked over to the bar, where he had to step aside to allow a group of noticeably tipsy sorority girls to breeze past. Their laughter echoed behind him as he made his way inside.

...And there they were. Kalen and Sera and someone that Ian hadn't met before, drinking tequila in one of the booths. Ian's eyes found them almost immediately, and if Kalen happened to glance his way, he'd receive a light smile (just a faint curve of the lips) and a raised eyebrow. But Ian didn't approach their table immediately. Instead he strode over to the bar and ordered a drink.

Danny

*Oh yeah, he had the glass in his hand. He set it on the table, leaning his shoulders back into the cushions before resting his head back and watched them. The corner of his mouth still in that smile but he was just in the buzz now that the alcohol had given him. No need to argue with that and he was most assuredly not in the right state to drive. But atleast he wasn't being melancholy on them. No, instead when his fingers were free of the glass he began to play again, just running his fingers at the heart of the board where it met the the neck, picking out the notes in rapid succession without thinking about it, then sliding them solidly his foot tapping rapidly to the temp in his head. Then he speaks again.*

So... Monogamy is unnecessary, but in a way it's also necessary. Just that you kind of don't think it's for you? *His eyebrows raised as he asked the question, staring right at Kalen as he did so.*

Kalen Holliday

Somewhere, in the middle of all this discussion about dating, which is almost the most serious conversation he's had about dating in a decade, there is Ian. And Kalen cannot help it, he laughs softly and looks up, and when he catches sight of that smile he nods back.

Look. Danny. Are you really ready to share him the people he has and the people he does not have and his practical compulsion to go jump between people and monsters?

"I just fell in love. It didn't, at the time, even seem like a thing to question. Of course, that worked out better, then." Blink. Well, there was that one time his probably-but-not-definitely-ex-girlfriend left him half-dead and didn't look back, but they're way past that now. "I was less...that was before a lot of things."

A lot of things he doesn't want to talk about apparently, since his more customary distance settles back into place. "It's hardly relevant now, since I basically fail at all human relationships. And anyway, it's probably for the best. What's my life expectancy? Why would I do that to anyone? It would hardly seem fair."

Serafíne

Sera is inhaling through her nostrils and holding her breath in her lungs and letting it go again, in this deliberate way, and the world around her feels all unhinged and open as it always starts to past a certain hour on certain nights, and Danny keeps pawing at the guitar he has across his lap in a way that feels familiar to Sera - familiar but without context, mind - such that when he does that, the look she gives him is fond and a little bit aching with the strangest sort of edge.

Kalen says that he just fell in love which happens, you know, to people, sometimes for good and sometimes for ill and sometimes for a helluva lot of both and Sera lifts her chin and gives Kalen this sliding/sparking uplift of a glance. Smiles, rather fond, until he starts to shut down, and what he says next makes her roll her eyes - fondly - just a little bit, because he's being dumb.

She stops him with a drunken hand on his mouth, the bronze ring she always wears still on her index finger, her nail polish a chipped black, and leans up to kiss him on the temple. Murmurs, shhhhh, to him when she is close to his skin.

Then pulls back. "Danny. Tell Kalen the best thing you say today. Kalen, tell Danny the worst thing you saw today. I'm gonna be right back. I hafta pee."

--

And she gets up. Heads not to the Little Girl's Room, but right over to Ian at the bar.

She is carrying her shot glass, she doesn't remember why and it's empty but these people will fill it with things.

"Hey." Sera to Ian. She's a bit thinner than she was this summer, but what would he know about her usual weight? "Do me a favor?"

Ian

If one were to go by Ian's clothes, one would assume he made more money than he actually did. Not that he was dressed in anything unusual tonight, but his jeans were a high-end brand and his leather jacket was sleek lambskin. Beneath it he had on a black t-shirt, and there was a leather cord tied around his neck. The boots he had on were Frye - black leather to match his jacket, with a harness strap across the top.

He ordered bourbon. And then, with a relaxed motion (because he was not in any particular hurry tonight,) he began to turn in the direction of Kalen's table. Except then there was Sera, and she looked... thin. And a little less than present. And she was asking for a favor.

Ian looked at her with dark eyes, and he did not immediately respond. But then he tipped his head and asked, "what?"

Danny

*He sighed softly hearing Kalen out.* You hang up too much on that whole dying thing. Life expectancy being as short as you seem to think it is, would make me if I were looking down the barrel of a gun want to strike off my bucket list rapido and keep on going. I mean think about it... You don't know when it's all goin to end; so live. *He shrugs a bit as if to him it were all so simple.* Sleep when you're dead man. No point in worrying bout failure, it's experience... *he certainly seems to believe in that.*

Don't turn away the experience for a what if. Life's too short for that. Hell, the human race'd have died out by now if we'd all done that. *His fingers kept on playing, endlessly working notes out in a myriad of patterns as he did so.* Don't back down, grab it by both hands and scream that you want to go faster. It's everything.. Zen.

*Then his attention drifted in a different direction as he sought out something with a little frown on his perfect face, then his eyes settled on Ian.*

Okay... *he has to think about that one, the frown deepens as he thinks of it.* Uh... Shit... thinking, drunken thinking. This could come out bad... Okay... *He tilts his head back then chews his lips as his fingers genuinely stall.* I saw... Oh hey I got it... I was just chilling out this afternoon and saw the most amazing sunset. The colours man, they were just, purples and blues and pinks and oranges all with this set of clouds just riffing through it like... *he shrugs looking down at his fingers.* can't describe it. It was just real pretty, you know like when the world goes this odd orange everywhere and all the light seems unatural?

Kalen Holliday

Kalen's head tilts, and Danny gets his attention back not because of agreement but because of confusion. "Bucket list?"

He sighs. "Regardless, there are things I would like to do before I die, it's just that in the grand scheme of the cosmos...there are things more important than whether I am happy.

"Also. I'm not entirely sure you've quite grasped the concept of Zen."

But. look, he does soften, a little when Danny describes him a sunset. It's enough to pull his attention back from trying to see what Serafine is doing with Ian. "Yeah. I know."

Oh. He's supposed to say something. And he'd just refuse but it was Sera who requested and he just doesn't tend to refuse Sera. "Just dreams," he says after a long pause. "It's been a quiet day."

Serafíne

Sera gives Ian this neat little smile. Well, she intends the smile to be neat. She feels it curling itself around the edges of her mouth. Her eyes are glassy and her gait is pretty much unhindered by the thigh-high spike-heeled leather boots she wears but there's also a looseness to her movement that betrays not so much how much she has had to drink - though that is the natural assumption - as how little she had to eat before it. Some people draw circles in chalk or blood or powdered diamonds to cleanse themselves. Sera stops eating and watches Batman on IFC.

And the truth is: it works because she wills it to.

Ian though. Sera steadies herself with a hand on his shoulder and leans close, smiling, to murmur something into his ear.

Then she straightens up, and lets him go and waits for the bartender to fill her thingy. The thingy in her hand. Which should have stuff in it.

Serafíne

Murmured: "Go save them from themselves."

Danny

Bucket list, that whole, things you wanna get done before you die. No, Zen is a form of Karma, like the whole universe in motion, like Newtons Cradle but in a higher sort of purpose thing. *his hand lifts and he sets it above his head.* serious Karma, not just meditation. You know? Bigger than.. *he shrugs.* everything. *But he had that smile on his face as well.* I told you it'd probably come out wrong. Besides.. *he lowers his hand again.* I think it's kinda supposed to be personal.

*He grows a little more serious about the comment on dreams.* That's not good... *he shakes his head.* I don't think I want to know... *he reached and poured their shots, taking care to cuddle his way around the body of his guitar and concentrates like the devil to make sure his hand doesn't sway too much. Staring intently at the glasses before he move it on to another glass then sorts out the bottle to have it on the table without spilling it. Then he picks up his drink.* To not having fucking clue about the next toast.

Ian

Whatever Ian expected Sera to say, it wasn't the thing she murmured into his ear. And look - were things a bit different between them (and if Sera hadn't been drinking) Ian might very well have ignored her request in favor of something else entirely. Of falling into her gravity and breathing in the scent of her skin and her hair and her sweat. But nothing was ever that easy between them.

All the same, Ian laughed. And the sound was warm and natural and a little surprised. The gesture faded into a relaxed, wry smile. "I'll do my best."

There was a lingering glance thrown her way as he lifted away from the bar, then he threaded his way through the tables until he reached the booth where Kalen and Danny sat together. Ian's balance didn't waver as he moved. He had yet to drink anything, and even if he had... one would be hard pressed to imagine Ian capable of inelegant motion. He felt like a predator sidling up to their table. Cunning and graceful and feline.

"Mind if I crash the party?" His eyes slid from Kalen to Danny, taking in the unfamiliar mage with a lingering gaze.

Tarrin Rasvelg

This was not a place he would have normally found himself on a saturday night.Oh he liked a good place to drink, certainly, but he found that some places seemed to be geared to a different mind set. Despite his desire to linger on the couch with a torn copy of Beowulf, she dragged him up and out to see the city, or at least the younger nightlife.

Unfortunately, the moment she pulled him in, she was wandering off to indulge herself, and left Tarrin to find some sort of grounding. Alcohol was always the best method of finding one's place in uncomfortable affairs.

Beer, in that way, is his anchor. Tarrin makes his way to the bar slowly, the worn bottoms of his boots pressing into the floor. He pushed the dark blue sleeves of his button up towards his elbow, rolling them them just enough to keep them there. Casual and simple, that's how he liked it.

Kalen Holliday

"You don't." And that is flat. Final.

But at that toast Kalen laughs. Because, sometimes, if you surprise him (or catch him in a perfect storm of circumstances), he get out of his head long enough live in a moment. Very, very rarely. But he laughs, and he means it because Kalen's moods shift all quicksilver.

And so, he turns to Ian and he is still smiling and this is, while not Kalen drunk, Kalen about three shots past anything Ian has ever gotten to see. "Hey. Not at all. This is Danny, and we are about to toast to having no idea what our next toast should be. Join us?"

Danny

*He looked up as yet another face joined them at the table, then knocked back the shot and grimaced again before grabbing another slice of the lime to bite down on, well, that was comical wasn't it? When he set the glass back down on the table he'd sunk his teeth well and truly into the lime, making a smile around it. Then his fingers were back on the guitar again, the notes flooding out of him as the alcohol hit. He nodded to the toast and mumbled something bout, 'what he said', with that lime slice still in his teeth as he sucked on it.*

Serafíne

Sera gets another shot at the bar. She shouldn't really be served right now but she's difficult to resist when she wants something and she always wants something. Like now.

A shot. Which she gets, and pays for, and then checks her phone and does head to the ladies' restroom, texting while she walks. The bar's more and more crowded as the night goes on and even with her heels anyone watching her will soon lose sight of her in the crowd. Then her resonance will dwindle and fade, until the sense of her is well and truly gone.
