That's what they all say.

radiant

One of those nights where the dreams - whatever they are - seem to wrap around your neck and viscera and throttle you. Discursive, discordant. Displaced somehow, and you wake up without a clear sense of where you are and when you are and where you should be, just a throat full of bile and a pounding heart because because because because there was something - something - you should've done.

The apartment.

Oh right. The apartment. His apartment. How precisely Elijah ended up here last night is a blur, but distinct pieces of an argument - oh, let us call it a 'discussion' - he had with a tearful Jenn at some ridiculous hour over the electric stove and a late night pot of Kraft Mac'N'Cheese.

It's not fair, Elijah.

I tell you everything.

I told you everything and now it's like -

I'm worried about you. I don't even know what to say. I don't even know if saying anything is worth it because it's not like you give a fuck -

--

There's no way around her hurt. He hasn't been anything close to frank with her and of course it feels to her like he is letting her go in favor of nothing good at all.

That was then. This is now.

He wakes up in a bed, warm in here, gray sky through a grinding window and a great slab of wall. The streetsounds muffled but present, this background haze that makes one feel both in the world and outside of it. when he sits up, the sheets pool around his torso, but he's still in last night's clothes.

There's a mirror propped against the wall by the door.

Movement within that captures his attention but - somehow - so hard to see.

Elijah

She knows when he's lying. She knows when he's lying because Jenn has seen him when he was not a practiced liar, has seen his eyes dart to the side and has seen his stomach tense up the world start to slide. She knows when he is lying, because he winces when he's done talking, like it hurts to say. LIke he hates doing it, like he hates lying to her. Maybe that's the reason for the silence. Lies of omission.

It isn't fair, and I'm sorry, but really-

Any time there is a but, there's a hit coming. Something painful and unexpected, or in this case very expected. Rote excuses for everything.

He doesn't go to class.

Elijah doesn't go to class all the time, not religiously, but just enough to pass. Just enough to blow through those alotted absences early because he has a theory that if he saves them up for the end then he'll miss something important while the professor is slamming hard and fast through to finish the syllabus. He has a theory, and it's worked out so far. How nice it must be to skate so easily, to have no repercussions if he does fail because it's not his money on the line. Not his scholarship. Not his financial aid because, even if the apartment- his apartment- was on a crappy side of town and even though he he had a crappy job and allowance, he still had parents who would foot the bill if he fucked up. People who were willing to-

Nevermind. It didn't matter. He could taste tequila and blue box Mac'n'cheese still. Sat up and pushed his hand to the side to see if there was a body beside him. Seems it's just him right now.

Elijah slid out of bed, pocketwatch pressed to the inside of his rib cage courtesy of a vest he never took off. His jeans were half unbuttoned. His shoes were... somewhere. He never remembered where they were. If I could tell you, you would think-

What would she think? Shouldn't you let her decide that?

He cleared his throat and he meandered closer to the mirror.

radiant

"If I could tell you."

The mirror's just a mirror. There's a surface, and a reflection. There's Elijah Poirot reflected in the surface, the disaster area of a bed behind him. He's barefoot. Red lines from the pillow still etched into his skin. Morning, morning morning.

If I could tell you, that's bullshit.

It's just a mirror.

If/would. If/could.

It's just a mirror. And he's reflected in it.

It's just a mirror.

(Except: he's smiling. A viscious note of challenge in his eyes.)

"Fuck that. Move your ass, kid."

Want/Will.

Elijah

There is a challenge in his eyes, a smile that doesn't mirror on his own face but he looks at the mirror- can you trust your own body to tell you the truth? Maybe he was smiling and he didn't know it, didn't feel it. It's just a mirror, except he's smiling, and Elijah knows his own eyes. Knows that challenge in them and doesn't precisely know what he's challenging.

He put his hand on the mirror, the thing that's just a mirror and he hears something.

Fuck that, move your ass, kid.

"What, do you want me to go-" he took a step away from the mirror and was ready to go to bed again but... he didn't. Elijah paused and turned around. "She's going to think I'm fucking crazy."

He tries to reason with his reflection. As if that wasn't crazy enough.

"You don't think I'd tell her, do you?"

radiant

Elijah's reflection rolls its eyes and flips him the fuck off.

"Coward."

Says the voice, and it comes not from the mirror but from everywhere. The bed and the sheets and the walls and the matte gray skin. Inside his skin and without his skin. From the singular molecules of dust dancing in the stale apartment air. Wherever.

It isn't even accusatory right now.

Just, somehow, Naming.

In the mirror, his doppleganger sticks up a second middle finger to match the first. Then turns around and starts to walk away down a long dark corridor.

Which, you know, there doesn't seem to be one of those in the room.

Elijah

But naming something makes it real. Naming something makes it true, gives it form, gives it purpose, and he knows this to be true, and knows it to be true when the voice says what it is. As though this were just an act of stating what was in the room. There was a mirror. There were floorboards. There is a coward.

"I am not a coward," he insists, turns to find an exit, to find Jenn, because he has to prove this, he has to say something he can feel it in his gut and in his knees that he is scared, and he can think of forty thousand quotes about courage but finds them failing because he can be a coward. And some part of him is fine with that.

There is a louder, more insistent part of him that is not fine with that. Not content to settle with definitions, not content to stay and not take a risk because look where risks got him-

No. Look where risks did get him. He's here, he's awake, he's alive and vital and the walls feel stale and that sound is coming from everywhere. He then takes his moment to look for his corridor. If there was one in the mirror, maybe there was one here, maybe he was losing touch, maybe that was a symbol, but he couldn't... he couldn't just walk away.

"I will not be a coward," he corrects.

radiant

Elijah looks around the room and the room is perfectly ordinary. The rumpled bed, the brick walls. The window with a view of another wall, the patch of the sky. This sense of being lived in without being lived in.

The mirror leaned against the wall by the door, the murky light. His own tall frame getting smaller by that familiar trick of perspective.

Elijah tells himself - or whoever the fuck it is - that he will not be a coward, and that retreating figure stops. Makes this scoffing noise and glances over its shoulder, meeting Elijah's eyes.

They are not his own.

"That's what they all say, kid."

Turns around then, and keeps on walking.

Elijah

He looks at the figure, its retreat and its warning, that's what they all say.

It's him, but it isn't. Coward, he remembers, hears echoed in his own ears, translates across his shoulders and resides into the pit of his stomach where it can either fester or he can throw it back up like poison but something still lingers, something still stays seated in his mouth.

"I don't owe you a goddamn explanation," he tells the reflection. Not quite his reflection, because it's not quite his eyes but it's enough. Enough to make him pause.

And it settles with him, looks back at the mirror and he shakes his head. Just an encounter, just a reflection. Just... just a reminder. There's a world of infinite capacity and capability, he could do a number of things, if he wanted to do them.

"Hey Jenn, you still here?"

he meandered about for a moment. Uninterested in finding his shoes and, instead, finding something that mattered

radiant

"Mmmph."

He finds her in the kitchen eating a bowl of Froot Loops with almond milk. It's lunch time or something close to it. Her backpack is slung over one of the kitchen chairs, one strap slipping off the frame.

"I think you missed class."

It's not pointed. Just an observation.

Elijah

"I'm dropping physics anyway," he finds her in a chair int he kitchen, and when he sees her, he smiles, pleased but... on edge. He'd had a conversation with nothing, conversed with a reflection and now... now he was going to tell her something that he needed to have said about three years ago when the world came crashing down.

"Are you gonna miss class if I... y'know... talk to you?" it's awkward, and he knows it's awkward. Or maybe it's awkward because he's making it awkward, but whatever the case, Elijah perched himself atop the meager kitchen counters.

"I've been kinda weird since... y'know," the whole drowning, dying, sophomore year thing. The whole you stopped breathing and I thought you died thing. The whole we don't talk about what happened thing. "And... I kinda want to explain why."

radiant

This isn't the sort of conversation one expects one's sort-of best friend and sort-of roommate and sort-of everything to initiate sometime in the middle of day and yet here she is. Here they are: the middle of the day, the conversation changing, the moment being shifted as moments are wont to do.

Jenn is still holding the bowl of Froot Loops in her left hand, has a spoon full of them ready to shovel into her mouth, and gives Elijah a brow-lifted glance that is somehow both cautious and inviting. After so many months, she hardly knows whether to believe that he actually wants to talk to her about anything serious - she's also not ready to scoff.

"I might," she says to his question, with a quick shrug. "I don't mind, if it's important enough."

Elijah

It was easier not telling her. It was easier just dancing around it and pretending like it didn't happen, but Jenn knew things. Jenn knew about Alicia's dad, about some quasigovernmental organization. She knew that things were weird, but Elijah? Elijah hasn't told her anything.

"I did die."

It's easier to start there.

"I don't mean almost... I mean... like... heart stopped, everything stopped, tried to pass on to the next life but if you have unfinished business you're stuck here and I didn't want to be dead," it's on his face, plain as day, he wants her to believe him. Not out of some malicious joy, but a genuine, abiding need.

"And it's been different since then. There's been this push since then, and-and I don't know if it's me or part of me or something bigger than I am, but there's this push to find something bigger and-" he's rambling. He knows he's rambling, and his hands are clapsed in front of him. Knuckles white, disguising sweaty palms and a racing heartbeat. "It's like, I know the world is full of potential now, I've seen it and I want that potential to push past into kinetic and fuck if it doesn't sound lame but magic is fucking real, anything's fucking possible and everything's permitted and-"

He suddenly unclasps his hands and runs them through his hair. Pushes his back against the cabinets.

"I moved out because I thought I pissed off the same kind of people that took Alicia's dad. I didn't want bad shit to happen to you here so I moved in with Kalen and Grace."

A little quieter.

"There's this whole other world out there, and I'd show it to you if you'd let me and if you'd believe me."

radiant

"You're rambling," Jenn points out, quietly and not unkindly. "And I think maybe you're hung over. But seriously, quasigovernmental agencies or not - what's worse than lying to your best friend? What's worse than freezing me out? What's - "

She closes her eyes, spoon hovering over her bowl of cereal and shakes her head. There's an awful lot there to take in, and she wants to give him space to tell her, but he's rambling and there's so much space between them that has been inhabited by -

"I am gonna go to class. I'll be out by six. We can grab dinner and if you still think you have things you want to tell me and to show me, I'll listen."

Once upon a time she might've said that they were friends, and she owed him that much.

Now it feels like the debt is reversed: the other direction.

That doesn't matter.

"Text me, okay?"

She'll come. She'll listen. She can't promise anything more.

Elijah

He nods.

All he does is nod, and it doesn't take a genius to realize that there is space there. That there are things he has taken for granted because he thought he could.

"I'll text you," he says.

Elijah doesn't leave the apartment, though. Not until later, not until dinner. He has a lot of making up to do.

The Bodega.

Serafíne

The afternoon was so ridiculously warm that it felt almost like spring. Has felt almost like spring for most of the ridiculously warm winter, mind, and everywhere the early spring bulbs are already poking up through the ground. The half-neglected planters with last-season's pansies in front of The Bodega have actually perked up and are starting to think about blooming again. For all that the afternoon was warm there's the possibility of snow tonight, at least in the higher elevations.

There's a little more foot traffic in Sante Fe than there usually is on a Tuesday in February. Some couples are hitting the town early for Valentine's day. They can get a table and some privacy tonight, save the money for a sitter come the weekend. Others are just lured outside by the weather and an early case of spring fever. A few of the galleries have stayed open later than usual and the bars and restaurants are bustling.

The Bodega is a bit of all of the above. Gallery, bar, coffee shop specializing in the slow-pour method. Next door - housed in the same gray-brick building and connected to the shop by a framed brick archway - is a little clothing boutique framed that seems to cater to the romantic Victorian S&M chick in all of us.

That's where Sera is - hidden away in one of the dressing rooms but her resonance is everywhere.

Dan's next door in the coffee shop, acting like a proper young professional, his MacBook open on a table, headphones over his ears, a French press and two coffee mugs on the table.

Alexander

Whether you believe that fate drives people together and apart or that random probability pushes and pulls people away from each other like the waves of the sea, the effect recently has been the same for Alexander. There hasn’t been any actual intent to avoid bumping into people – Awakened people – beyond his frequent forays into the mountains to get away from everyone and everything. There’s a peace to be found there that just can’t be found in the land of cell phones and TVs and SUVs and non-stop activity.

But tides turn and the push of fate or random chaos seem to be bringing Alex back into contact with those people who see more of the world than most. The tide brings him to the bar area, where he’s sat nursing a beer. His attention seems to be focussed on a tea-light sat in the bottom of a glass holder, running his hand over the top to feel the heat and watching the dance of the flame as his movement stirs the air. He uses the sensation of the heat to focus his will and expand his own perception of the candle, watching the thermal energy drifting and circling above the glass.

He knows that Sera is nearby, the feeling of her presence lingers in the room and centres on the changing rooms. He doesn’t make his way over – not while she’s changing and trying things on. Partly because hanging around the ladies’ changing rooms tends to get you strange looks and partly because she might ask him to pick something out. So he stays put until the tide nudges them again.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is not looking for them. He is looking for Valentine's Day presents. An exercise in shopping that he does not feel the need to confine to Danny. It is a holiday of some kind. It is a wonder, really, that Kalen hasn't decorated the House with hearts and streamers. He does plan to leave lots of candy, but the decoration and general production is absent from Valentine's day with Kalen.

He's been away too, focused on his library and vanishing to Chile for a few days that turned into a few more days too. Visiting a few of his old acquaintances that he hasn't spoken to since bothering to let the world know he wasn't dead. He's been spotted more often, but if Kalen vanishes for long there are search parties. He's seen the evidence of this on Ginger.

Kalen walks up to Alexander without any particular concern for warning him about his presence, but there is no surprise gesture from behind. Some of the things he has in bags are fragile. Instead of tormenting Alexander and ending up on the ground again, he drops into the seat across from him as though he were fucking invited.

"Hey."

Serafíne

Alexander has a pretty good fix on Sera's location and a pretty reasonable basis not to disturb her there. Hell, he has a whole handful of pretty good reasons not to disturb her, and he doesn't know the half of it. She probably wouldn't just ask him to pick something out. She might ask him to try something on. She might ask him to zip or unzip or otherwise assist her with the incommodius work of getting into and out of the pieces she likes -

- and god, the pieces she likes.

Like this one: a one-sleeved little blach dress with see-through metal eyelets in a loose weave. The metal frames half the bodice, creates the spaghetti strap, and is then woven into the fabric of the dress in a swatch that cuts down to reveal the sharp edge of her right hip, and make the already short skirt, thoroughly see through.

Her long hair is a loose mess of toussled curls, with a hit of static electricity from trying on so many dresses in the dry indoor air so that it haloes around her, lovely.

She hasn't - doesn't - bother slipping back into whatever she wore here. She's probably taking that dress so it doesn't matter: but when she senses Alexander and then his magic and then reaches and sees the threads he is weaving. Well, aww. She is excited.

Comes out of the dressing room in that dress, barefoot, tags still on it somewhere, crosses through the boutique to the bar, drops a hand on Dan's shoulder as she passes and kisses him on the crown of his head, then heads on over to Alexander and Kalen's table.

Takes a seat of her own.

"Alexander," Sera breathes, with a little waggle of her fingers toward Kalen. "Lookit you. You're Working."

Alexander

Alexander hadn’t roused the locals to go Kalen-hunting because, even though he’s been distant, he hasn’t been completely out of contact. An occasional text message, voice mail or phone call stops him worrying that people have gone missing and stops others worrying – too much – about him. Even with that occasional contact, people can still drift apart from each other.

But not, apparently, these three. Kalen arrives and Alexander turns to look up at him and smiles as he sits down. The days may have turned into weeks since they last physically bumped into each other, but it doesn’t feel like the time has really passed. “Hey. How are you? And how was Ramon?”

Unknown to him, today wouldn’t have been the first time that others would have tried to get Alex dressed up given the opportunity. This time, at least, would have missed out on Disney characters and a certain song that seems possible to escape. On the other hand, he doesn’t have any interest in finding out how he looks in a corset. Small mercies. He does turn to watch Sera as she walks up to the table, occasionally unsure of quite where to look. He’d come across her wearing even less before, but still… Those lines are still there, and his gaze heads up and stays above the line of the shoulder.

As he looks up, he gets a view of more of the room. Each of the tables has a similar candle sat on it, each one creating a haze of drifting heat above it. But beyond that, Kalen and Sera and the other people in the room cast off their own heat haze. It’s hard to follow any individual source but the whole? The whole is almost a work of art.

There’s a smile for Sera as she greets him. “Trying to. It’s pretty cool.” Given how he’d reacted to some of his previous attempts at opening up his sense to his surroundings, it’s possibly surprising at how well he seems to be taking to this new sense.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen doesn't seem surprised, not by Alexander Working (he's come across that before, after all) and not by running into the two of them here. Alexander can see heat radiating off of things and Kalen can feel winter with every breath, gathering and ready to spill out from the constraints of the approaching spring.

His gaze spends perhaps a bit more time lingering below the line of Serafine's shoulders, though not much. "I did always wonder where you found dresses like that. And now I know. It looks lovely."

Kalen smiles at the mention of Ramon. "He's good. He may have had some...very gently stern commentary after he took my confession, but he's...used to that. Mostly he does this thing with his eyes like 'I have infinite compassion and infinite love and infinite joy about the world' and then I feel guilty about not being a better person. It's...I think he does that to everyone."

Serafíne

Are you in love with that priest?

Serafíne

"Trying nothing," the creature murmurs, her eyes a dark, candle-lit flash as she glances at Alexander and slides in to a seat nearby. He's nursing a beer, and at some point a waiter or barista or whatever will slide back past and ask if Sera and Kalen want anything. With a winsome smile, Sera orders a Moscow Mule and also tells the waitress that she'll take the dress. And the other things on the right hook in the dressing room, please and thank you. Returns her lovely attention to Alexander, then, this half-hum of awareness beneath her voice. He's watch the heat haze, its radiant glow. She is watching the strands of the magic he weaves, the corner of her fine little mouth quirked into very very present half-smile.

"You're doing it. I'm proud of you. Not just because you're doing it, but because it seems like you fucking like it. Yeah?"

An errant shrug of her bare left shoulder, and Sera flashes a quick glance toward Kalen. Preens a bit, because the dress is rocking. "Lovely isn't quite, what I was going for, but thanks. And I find them bloody everywhere. From Buffalo Exchange right on up. I like to shop."

Then, another glance, this one perhaps sharper. Sera is about to inform Kalen that she thinks confession is shit, but - well. Something makes her hold her tongue.

Alexander

Alex thinks for a minute when Kalen wonders where Sera finds her clothes and thinks along the same lines. She certainly has a knack for finding unusual clothes that emphasise her features, but maybe she just makes more out of the outfits than the designers had in mind. Not many people would be able to carry it off with quite as much… presence.

Alex smiles when Kalen talks about his time with Ramon, taking a swig from the bottle as he talks. “Maybe not in exactly the same way with everyone? I’m glad you got to spend time with him, though. You’re looking well. Rested.”

Sera asks if he’s enjoying what he’s discovered for himself and he smiles again. “I do. I guess I’m finally getting to see a little more of that wonder that you’ve talked about.” There’s a flash of apology in his face when the thought of her previous attempt to show him her own wonder backfired somewhat. But it’s only a flash and passes as soon as it arrives. “So, yeah. How’ve you been?”

Kalen Holliday

"I'm terribly sorry," Kalen purrs at Serafine. "That dress is spectacular. And really, really hot." He does mean that, though mostly from a carefully constructed distance. There are lines he generally does not cross with Serafine, but that does little enough to change anything about how beautiful she is.

He orders wine, because of course he does. He's gotten used to it again.

"It's been...months since I was concerned about the immediate possibility of the world ending," he says to Alexander. "Given another few months I may have to do something ridiculous. Like...learning to bowl or something. Possibly even cooking, though-" He winces a little. "That might bring us right back to the world being in peril."

Serafíne

"Me?" An errant arch of her dark brows, as the waitress returns with her drink it is proper copper mug. This is that kind of place - what else would you expect from a boutique / gallery / bar in a trendy area of Sante Fe. "I'm cool." Neat little shrug here, which is quite as meaningless as you might guess, and for all that she absolutely means her response, it is also a strangely structured, complicated lie. Most niceties are. "I always am."

Then Kalen - from his carefully constructed distance - purrs at Sera and tells her that the dress is really really and there's a beat or two where she just studies his profile and looks oddly - abashed? It's a strange filter to see over her expression, but it's there. The corner of her mouth is quirked, and it quirks wider when he enunciates the litany of mundane things he might have to learn without world-ending tragedies to occupy him.

"Dan'll teach you the guitar," she tells him, quietly. Then, "hey Kalen? You can say lovely if you want. And I'll be right back. I gotta go pay and grab my things before the store closes."

So saying, she takes another draught of her drink and nips off back toward the store to see about her purchases.

Elijah

He had texted.

This particular book store cum coffee shop/gelato place was his most recent acquisition. He was now the mayor of a place called The Book Rack. The book shelves were packed high and full of second hand books of any and every kind. The cafe served things in mismatched mugs with bright smiles from the pink-haired Vietnamese girl who was slinging cappuccino today. The air even smelled like chai spices and some strange array of otherness that one seemed to only find in Asian food markets.

It boasted one of those little machines that heat seals the lids on the bubble tea. Elijah didn't know what honey dew and taro was going to taste like, but there were tapioca balls involved so he wasn't going to complain too terribly much.

He had a pile of books.

He'd already bought a couple, but was perusing the others to see if they were something that he actually wanted. Mostly art history. Things he couldn't replicate but most definitely wanted to understand. A beginner's guide to physics. Some first aid- bridging the gaps in his mundane knowledge base. Attire was comfortable, vaguely River Phoenix-esque with tousled hair and without the tragedy attached. Button down shirt, a pair of lacks, and a vest. There was a fine line between appearing like a hipster and a business school drop out, and today Elijah was most assuredly riding the line.

Grace

"Okay, so Elijah... You're going to maybe not want to do that," Grace says, walking up to Elijah. Like kittens to milk, so Mages are to information and the caffeine necessary to consume said information. She puts her hand out over his phone without looking up from hers. "Foursquare is so spy-tastic. I can find you too easily. At least make it a little hard?"

Smells like dead trees and espresso in here, and she takes a deep breath. Looks up and around finally, as though realizing at last that she might need sight to navigate. It does help. A bit. She's in her coat -- the all angles, suggestive of something vulpine. It was never her idea, but she's worn it enough and modded it enough to make it a thing thoroughly Grace. It feels like her -- sharp and shifting.

"You want to hit the ice cream at all?"

Grace has no books. Or at least, she hasn't chosen to buy any. She's read bits and pieces of quite a few while here, in complete disregard for 'this is not a library' rules. If it were up to her, every single thing in here would be digitized and given wings. Perhaps even including the people. Yep, definitely the people too.

Elijah

"Aw, come on. You have a steady stream of constant information regarding where I am and what I am doing at all times. In the event that I go missing, there's going to be twenty people at least who think that's weird because I'm not instagramming the Hell out of this," he only half whined, but his heart wasn't in it. There was a grin on his face and there he was. Comfortable and pleased and everything smelled like dead trees and espresso, and this awas a completely acceptable smell in the mind of one Elijah Poirot.

Does he want to hit the icecream? At all?

"I was hoping you would ask that, Tao said they have lemon pommegranate gelato," he said. He paused, "I dig the coat, by the way."

Grace

"I'll make you one. Give me an old coat you've got hanging around, and I'll fix it up for you," Grace says, and realizes that of course Kalen won't approve of that plan. He'd have Elijah in something new and tailored AND festooned with lights and infrared sensors. Grace is a creature of practicality, however, so Kalen can go take a flying leap -- into a ball pit or something, because she's not that mean.

"You'll need one to participate in the training room activities."

There are lemon pomegranate gelato scoops to obtain, so she starts wandering in that direction. Elijah can follow or not as he will, but she will keep talking.

"Didn't you ever think that those things were just a ploy to find out how to target adds at you better?"

Cala

Awareness.

Elijah

"I'm pretty sure I've got a coat hanging around somewhere. I need some danger room gear, it seems," he couldn't help but grin, perking up at the notion that he was going to get to go be in a place where there was training for danger. Like an X-Man, but he didn't have cool mutant superpowers.

Magic doesn't count as a cool mutant superpower. That's completely different.

He does start to head that way, content to keep talking and acquire gelator because the idea of keeping him away from something with sugar was strange at best, "I figured it was a data mining kind of thing? Corner table in the little cafe, just within the spill of lights from the street. Reflections, see. Some businesses are starting to close down for the evening: the restaurant supply store next door. Others are just starting up: the strip club on the corner. The Book Rack isn't closing soon but the cafe is already half-empty. Maybe it'll fill up again, later. Folks who want gelato on the way out, or back in. Some local band's local track playing over the soundsystem. It's a concept album about biscuits.

The girl at the corner table is farthest away from Grace and Elijah and the most aware of them. An edge to her, the slantwise way she watches them. It feels both refined and furtive. And perhaps they don't even notice the way she watches them.

The way she is aware of them.

That doesn't mean they don't feel her.

Grace

Grace is oblivious to the spying, but not to the sensation of someone else in the place. Some new presence filters in softly, and her head rises a tic. Who is that?

New Awakened people in Denver are often very new indeed. It doesn't surprise or put her on edge to feel an opening. She's just curious, looking rather like her nicknamesake -- foxlike in her quick glance around.

Oh. They have strawberry...

"Elijah. Green tea gelato. I think I have hit sugar nirvana," she says, presses her hand to the glass covering the gelato counter.

Somebody is totally unconcerned.

Elijah

He paused, mid approach to the counter and he knew better. He knew that he shouldn't be following that sort of curiosity, but there was something new, and his gut pulled him towards the corner and-

What sort of creature would he be did he not follow his gut. "What do you open," he says to himself.

Really, apprentices shouldn't be left to their own devices and Grace said there is green tea gelato and he nudges her a little before starting his approach to the corner, like Aurora Rose towards sme magical spindle, but less trance and more curiosity. Because he was a curious thing, that curiosity would get him into trouble at some point.

"I'm gonna make friends," he called back.

And thus it is off to the corner to make friends.

Cala

The girl - she is a girl - is winter dressed. Dark coat, slung over the shoulder of the flimsy cafe chair. Battered leather gloves pulled off her hands and left to their devices on the table. Cup-and-saucer steaming on the table, one of the small metal teapots for the ferrying of hotwater on the table. Dark hair and dark eyes. Sharp, okay?

And forgettable.

She seems relaxed. Watching the dark street through the dark windows, tending to her tea. Strangers' reflections swimming across the surface, the bustle outside. The smear of headlights, the spray of green-to-yellow as the stoplights outside change colors.

Seems.

Elijah sees her better than Grace.

Reads the wary tension that underscores that facsimile of ease and disinterest.

Someone is braced for something. Someone is ready to run.

Grace

"Hmm?" Grace says. "Oh, new friend?"

She smiles at the guy who stands on the other side of the gelato counter waiting for her order. She's not going to give him any. Friends await. Or, at least, attempts at friendliness await.

No, she'll walk with Elijah over to the corner, letting him take the lead. Yes, let's see what'll happen. Let's see.

"Is that her?"

Elijah

Someone is braced for something. Someone is ready to run.

It makes someone else stop, or at least slow. She's going to run, she's going to bolt and something is going to happen. That much he knows, or thinks he knows. But he straightens, exhales and pulls his confidence together because he has to say something now that he's turned around and made his approach.

"Excuse me," he says, quiet enough to not be obtrusive. Loud enough to not be hard ont eh ears, "but is that any good?"

He gestured to the tea in its little metal teapot-and-cup-and-saucer set up. He doesn't justify, just continues, "I caught it out of the corner of my eye and I figured I might as well ask, ya know?"

Cala

The small cafe is half-empty, a few murmured conversations in the air, sure. The biscuit concept album on the sound system, turned down to the level that Norah Jones' records often are: inobtrusive.

So there is not much to cushion the conversation. To make it contextual or natural. Not much in the air to give it substance - that glow that seems to spark in the air in busy social spaces.

The girl - the young woman - gives up the pretense used to conceal her interest as soon as it becomes clear to her that Elijah has chosen a deliberate path to her or near her table. Elijah and Grace are half-way through the tables, one trailing the other, when she gives them both a frank, spare look. She has dark eyes. They touch on Elijah, then slide to Grace.

That is where they linger longest.

--

Her mouth is flat. There is a small, lumpen bag beneath her feet - leather like the gloves, battered, a match for her dark brown boots - and as Elijah comes up and says to her, excuse me, she is bending down beneath the table, stuffing or shoveling something back into it.

When she sits up again, she's pulling the drawstring closed.

Gives the teapot a sideglance. Gives Grace another sideglance, her mouth flat.

"It's fine," she says, non-committal. Reaching across the table for her gloves. A glimpse in the mug and it doesn't even look like tea.

Just hot water and lemon.

Both free.

Grace

The stuffing of a purse, the going for the gloves -- these are 'I'm leaving' signals. Grace has done that before. The fleeing from danger impulse used to be quite strong with her.

So she just smiles at the woman, trying to impress upon her the non-monster nature of the two of them. Just good people, we are. Not going to hurt you.

When the cautious woman's eyes land on her, mouth flat, all nerves and furtiveness, Grace will wave at her. Chill. It's cool. We're all cool here. Look at how cool we are.

Dice: 1 d10 TN7 (2) ( success x 1 ) [WP]

Elijah

He's distracted.

There is a moment of focus there, and he is definitely distracted by somerthing or focusing on something just out the window. Just outside of his reach and he's thinking, and there are things he could say, and there are things he would want to say but he has so little language and Kalen had been very specific that those particular words were to be kept secret.

Can't very well be secret when you're talking to someone who is fleeing, now can you?

"Uh..." so, Mister Personable can't quite come up with words at that juncture. He's too torn elsewhere.

Cala

Elijah is distracted, trying to focus, trying to find the threads of magic in the air lingering around her. He needs more time, perhaps more words, but the strange girl has already flexed her long fingers around the strap of her backpack and now she's picking it up.

Now she's standing.

She has no great height and something about her is forgettable in the same way that Grace can be forgettable. Though she is taller than Grace, with a contained expressiveness that flickers behind her mask like the shadows of passing clouds over a summer sidewalk. These subtle flickers that are hard to spot beneath the tension.

Spare humor, the sort that some might call gallows.

A deep down impulse to smirk.

Her hair is pulled back and twisted into a loose bun. Her clothing dark.

"Excuse me," she says, once she is standing, the pack slung over her right shoulder, the gloves in her left hand.

And then she cuts between them, headed toward the front door.

Elijah

"Why were you watching us?"

It's the first thing that comes out of his mouth, the first thing that is coherent and he lets that thread of magic start to pull and he can't quite find it, can't quite grasp the concept of that fundamental truth. He can't quite put a meaning to it all, he can't find where intent pulled the formless into the fold.

Not suspicious, just... frank.

Grace

"I think maybe we chased her off," Grace says to Elijah, as his tumult rises about him. "It happens."

She looks to her phone in hand, and starts tapping away at it. There is another thing Grace likes to do with new people other than say hi to their face. She also likes to send them her own brand of text message -- one that works without the intervention of a phone company.

So her screen goes black, replaces the black with Code, that she slips herself into. All things connect to one another, and you might say that phones are uniquely suited to the task. They send out signals and receive them in turn and all of this tying and untying and bending fucking space goes unnoticed because it is so commonplace. But Grace can tie threads where there should be none.

Cala

Cala breathes out so sharply when Elijah asks that question. It is enough to arrest her. To make her stop her forward progress and turn around and just look at him. There is still a sense of furtiveness about her but beneath that is something else he can only just read: a kind of defiance. The look of saints and martyrs.

And - revolutionaries.

That smirk gets swallowed up in the collar of her oversized cloak.

There's no other answer for Elijah.

She gains the door soon after, pushes it open and heads out onto the dark street.

--

Meanwhile, Grace works. Or rather, Works.

The screen of her phone goes black and she loses herself in the Code. She knows this space, knows too that all spaces are one. She's met the girl, she just needs to get through, and it's working, everything is pulling together, the connection -

- Wait. There is no such number.

Anywhere.

Ever.

--

Outside: she does not double-back. Does not pass by the cafe's windows.

Still, Elijah sees the girl through the closing door, a brief glance over her shoulder.

Something about bodylanguage tells him that she very well may actually run.

Lock.

Key.

Grace

"She's afraid. What is she afraid of?" Grace asks Elijah, though her gaze is a confused one, straight into her phone.

"She's blocking my attempts to reach her," she adds, in quiet whisper. "I refuse to believe that anyone that young anywhere in this city has never owned a phone. That's ridiculous."

Even more ridiculous than any number of things Grace has seen. Apparently not even watching a ghul burst through a movie screen and start causing a riot is enough to merit the level of disbelief she finds in that particular notion.

Elijah

"I don't know yet," he said. Yet being the operative word. Yet because there was a puzzle, because now he wanted to know, needed to know if he could just hold onto the memory of her long enough to be more than dark and with the smirk of a revolutionary. Someone with fire.

He doesn't know the word for lock in Enochian, but he does know the word for key. He knows it because he tastes it on his tongue, because his wrists and fingertips have practiced drawing that sigil and the meaning of it sticks with him.

There is a door, some kind of door- but... but in that corner, it wasn't a thing, it wasn't a tangible thing, it was a person. If a person could be a feeling and it lingered. His gaze sharpened, and he watched.

"Lock... key," he said. "Lock," and then, something under his breath, something a little more guarded and alien. Key.

Elijah can see the Work Grace has done. It is strong, and peels apart the pattern of space and time. There is something else about the space where the girl sat, and even the trail she left behind that is already dissolving but feels - strange. Liberating?

No active work though. Nothing beyond Grace's Programming.

Elijah

[Magic, do what you will?]

Dice: 1 d10 TN5 (10) ( success x 1 )

Grace

"Oh, is that 'key' then?" Grace says, smirks, because she cares not for the rules of Hermetics. Kalen, who showed her his books of sigils long ago, likes to bend them from time to time as well.

Knowledge seeks such cracks in walls through which it can flow. Grace likes those faultlines.

"I just want some damn green tea gelato now. Miss Mystery can run away all she likes, I guess. If she doesn't want to talk so very hard, who am I to restrain her? Especially if she's afraid of us, that could be taken the wrong way..."

Elijah

"Whoever she is, she sure as Hell doesn't want to be contained or cornered, that's for sure," and that... sounds a little like approval from the young man. LIke he had room to really disapprove, but there he was. Things that were threads and intent and then ones and zeroes and keen edges and honed winged flight and they fluttered off into nothing.

Then something.

Then nothing again.

"I met a girl who didn't own a phone, like, ever? She may or may not have lived in a cult for the entirety of her life," he eventually does put his hands up and, hesitantly, turned around with a grin, "and it's key-ish. Approximation of what a key is for and not- anyway. Mostly key."

Couch Forts

Elijah

There is a front room.

There is a front room with furniture and a dining room with furniture and an upstairs that has beds and pillows. He came with a plan. He had a plan and it was through the front door with him. Knocks three times, bundled up because, regardless of the weather, driving a motorcycle in February is freezing and in he came with a backpack and a dream.

Knockknockknock

"Hi it's me I'm coming in don't mind-"

The backpack is set by the front door witht he clunk of glass bottles and the rustle of free floating plastic.

Serafíne

There's an old Ford Econoline van in the driveway of the chantry late Sunday, well into Monday too, turning 'round toward Tuesday. Bright moon in the sky that seems to be setting just before dawn. This sense of work in the air. Rejuvenating, growing near the node and something else - something framed, something that feels like a space outside of definitions, between modes. Like thresholds and doorways. Possibilities.

Elijah

There is a feeling in the air and it makes him pause, makes him breathe in deep because he feels like there is something going on. Something that was potential and possibilities, something that hadn't been converted to the kinetic and he thinks about how important it is that potential is coming to fruition on a full moon. He never thought himself the type who would think about these kinds of things. Well, technically it wasn't a full moon anymore, but full enough that it bore mention. Full enough to him that it brought his eyes to the sky.

It was always bright on the other side. Waxes and wanes and disappears, but it catches his attention none the less. That wasn't the point, though. The point was this: there was work being done here.

So, there was that feeling, and he went towards the node, towards the back of the house and out the door, to investigate.

Like he needed to investigate much.

Serafíne

"Hey." Dan in the kitchen, sleeves rolled up his forearms. Something on the stove. Something in the oven. Radiant warmth in the air and he's wearing an apron and the apron has a ruffle around its frame. The tall man smirks through his beard at Elijah because he knows he's wearing a ruffled apron. Picks up a bottle of beer from the counter and takes a swig.

"I think Sera's down in the living room. Food should be ready, soon, if you're hungry. Grab yourself a beer?"

Elijah

Investigation yielded results quickly, because no sooner than hi senses went ooooh, magic, he found himself meandering towards the kitchen and there was Dan. Dan making food.

His curiosities answered, but it turns out his sense of direction was off. He grinned, "food sounds fantastic." Because this was Elijah. He had yet to ever turn down anything that Dan cooked. He headed to the fridge to grab a beer, grabbed a bottle he knew he could open with a flimsy belt buckle, and called it good.

"I brought brownies," he said, "the original plan was to build a couch fort, but since there's people I might not."

He probably will, though.

Serafíne

That has Dan breathing out a laugh beneath his breath. Swallowing some of it, shedding the rest. The room smells like baking bread and vegetable soup: that peculiarly wintry combination that steams up the windows and fills the place with a good root smell.

"You could probably convince Sera to huddle with you beneath a couchfort. I mean, she's pretty exhausted? So you could probably talk her into becoming a nun or putting on a pair of footed pajamas or - "

Wry, Dan shoes Elijah onward once Elijah has retrieved his beer.

--

Downstairs, Elijah will find Sera curled up on the couch, a blanket over her spare body. Her hair's a mess and she looks: wan. Absolutely spent. But she kinda stirs when his footsteps sound on the stairs and gives him a lazy wave over, yawning a bit midgesture.

Elijah

A beat.

"Think she'd go for footie pajamas?"

Now he's thinking about it, though, and with a grin he headed off to the living room, shooed away to the living room with him.

--

Downstairs, down and downward into the cozy inner sanctum of the house, tehre was a Sera. An absolutely spent Sera, and there was Elijah windswept but ultimately energized with a beer in hand. He sauntered over, planted a kiss on the top of her head if she'd let him- wouldn't if she wouldn't- and he smiled.

"Wanna hang out in a couch fort?"

Serafíne

'Course Sera allows Elijah to kiss her on the crown of her head. If there's something in the world that she would not allow him - well - he hasn't found it yet.

So he kisses the crown of her head and she tips her head back and watches him as he circles the couch and breathes out a kind of laugh. Hooks a spare shoulder into a narrow little shrug.

"Sure. What the fuck's a couch fort?"

Elijah

"It's like a little tent-palace-thing that you make with household furniture crap- like pillows and blankets and generally things that you actually want to lay on."

Serafíne

"Do I hafta do anything or can you build it all around me?"

Elijah

He thinks about this for a minute, surveys the furniture nearby, before nodding, "nah, you shouldn't have to move, but if you do? It'll be, like, two feet of moving. Tops."

Serafíne

"Mmm." The creature hums, beneath her breath, or maybe above it as she considers her options and gazes up through her lashes at the young mage hovering over her. It is an effort to move or think or to be anything but where she is, feeling as she does. Sometimes when she's like this she just cries for no goddamned reason. Throws back six shots like nothing. Does - well -

- her Will is spent.

Sera isn't crying now. She seems thinner, somehow, as if she might manage someday to spread herself to insubstantiality, and she's a little bit tipsy but hasn't got the energy to head upstairs to grab herself another drink, and the wards are they, everywhere, worked, and she can feel the power of it. Makes her feel weird: proudweird but weird, like who knew she'd ever become an adult, and here she is.

Incising the world.

Incising the world and rolling off the couch: literally rolling off of it. Her blanket tangled around her legs and her ass (she's wearing boxers and a t-shirt, no bra but she's not well-endowed so who can really tell) lands solidly on the carpet between the coffee table and the couch.

"There. Easier if I'm on the ground? Make it big enough that I can lay down. I'm fucking tired."

Elijah

"Much easier," he says. She rolls off the couch though and he half snorts, half laughs, because he can't help it because... well.. for some reason it's funny to him. The whole motion of rolling off the couch so strangely familiar that he can't quite put a finger on it.

But there they are, and there was to be a couch fort. It starts, of course, with chaos.

That's how all things start with Elijah, like feeling like there is a goddamned disaster, and soon enough the young man made his way to the nearest piece of furniture with cushions and they are tossed, haphazardly, into a pile. They make heavy-yet-sort noises. Thunk. wump-something like that. They aren't a perfect stack. He doesn't care.

so he starts to make a pile of cushions, a floor for laying on, so to speak. Makeshift lounging spaces, but also? It was time to rearrange furniture. To push and pull and make a perimeter around the absolutely exhausted cultist-

"You really busted ass," he said. He could tell, but continues with his building.

- LIke this was a tiny exhibit. Behold Serafine in her natural habitat. We digress. Once the perimeter was set, there would need to be blankets. Definitely, definitely blankets.

Serafíne

Elijah tells her that she really busted ass, and Sera makes another one of those strange little noises, back of the throat thing, very much beneath and under her skin. Having rolled she now decides to sit up, legs crossed, the blanket falling in a woven drift around her waist.

"Someone had to." Okay, now she's a little bit teary eyed. Because ow: tired. Because ow: so many other things. But it's passing, it's passing. Everything hurts, sometimes, and she's not afraid of pain. "It's just weird that that someone was me."

Oh, she plants her feet on the floor and bends her knees and brings them up, arms around her calves, chin on her right patella, watching Elijah as he works.

"You did this alot when you were a kid?"

Elijah

"Not as much when we moved, but for awhile yeah. I kind of had free reign of the house so long as I wasn't loud or drawing on the walls," he says.

"Be right back."

It was up the stairs with him, though. Up and up and ugh so many stairs. He had to acquire sheets and blankets and such things.

About five minutes later, he does come back with sufficient building materials. Well, more than sufficient building materials, but it likely meant that Elijah was going to have to clean up a lot before he went home tonight. Or tomorrow. Or whatever. He didn't seem to care, it was off to erecting the actual structure with spare bedsheets.

"We didn't have alot of people over. Dad was running a start up so we didn't live somewhere fantastic in New Orleans. It was okay, but mostly just full of old people."

Serafíne

By the time Elijah returns with his extra building material, Dan has come downstairs with dinner. Or breakfast. Or lunch: whatever the house is. This loaf of fresh-baked and braided bread with sandwich meats and cheeses and some spinach and olives baked right into the center, the braided top golden brown and dusted with black sesame seeds. The sandwich-loaf have been sliced into slices, each one a perfect little baked sandwich the size of a slice of bread.

There are some chips and baby carrots and another bottle for Sera, but he it is all very low-key. He perches on the edge of an armchair near where she sits, a slice of sandwich in hand, the frilly apron still tied round his body, eating. Sera has two pieces of sandwich and a handful of carrots and some chips on the plate in front of her but hasn't eaten yet.

They're chatting when he comes back down. Dan's saying - "I think it's because when you are a kid its fun to create a space that is small and enclosed and belongs to you. Cozy and maybe kinda mysterious. Creates possibility, too."

Sera doesn't touch much of her meal. Her body is kinda wracked and she doesn't feel like eating, but that doesn't seem to have depressed her appetite for alcohol. She asks a little bit about New Orleans and then kinda curls up with her head on the edge of the couch and watches them work. Maybe she falls asleep, a bit. Wakes up later when the structure is finished and Elijah crawls inside.

Clean up? Okay, yes. But: later.

Now there's just a fort.

The point where it all converges.

Kalen Holliday

Dice: 7 d10 TN6 (1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 9, 10) ( success x 4 )

Serafíne

An old Ford Econoline van in the driveway, a half-empty bottle of whiskey on the kitchen counter next to a cooling pot of tea covered in a hand-crocheted tea cozy. There's some irony there. In fact the word IRONY has been crocheted into the netting, in a subtle tone on tone effect. Fragrant, the tea. Someone has fished the tea ball out of the water after it was brewed, to keep it from bitterness. It sits in its own little puddle in the stainless steel sink.

The tailings from another kind of tea left behind in a pot on the stove, right, recently made. The pot is still warm, even hot to the touch, but the brew has been poured out into something else and all that is left in the pot on the stove are the soggy shrooms in a strainer and a bit of the loose tea used to flavor the mix so that it doesn't taste like, well, boiled mushroom water.

--

She's outside, Sera is. Kalen can feel her resonance from a half-mile away. He can't feel Dan's presence because Dan doesn't leave those telltale stains on the supernatural senses but look: tea made. Both kinds, properly. Van in the driveway. Where does she go that the consor fails to follow? Hell, she doesn't drive (that is so she can drink) so he's pretty necessary to her getting here.

Downstairs, though. Not out back where the hotspring steams even in the midst of winter: but downstairs, where the lower level living room opens onto the fields framing the house. Just outside. The clouds are breaking up and a huge moon bathes everything in this broken, silvery light. The snow that fell yesterday is already melting. Tomorrow it'll be sixty degrees.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does step inside after he arrives. He does not start water for more coffee or more tea, but he does fill a kettle and set it on the stove. Ready. Serafine has no fear of the cold, though he expects Dan is probably already on that, and Kalen himself is not on the whole fond of the cold. It is growing on him, with Danny's love for snow angels and Alexander's Resonance, but he still is not overly fond of it. But, with minimal preparations made, Kalen heads outside to find Serafine. Or Serafine and Dan. However that happens.

As usual, he seems like he's dressed for weather that's colder, at least by Denver standards, but even so he still can't get into this hats thing. Long heavy coats and scarves, yes. Still not hats. His coat tonight is a simple charcoal grey wool, and it seems unremarkable enough until you touch it and find that it is all clean lines and cashmere. Of course it is. Beyond that, it's dark grey jeans and boots. The only thing in the whole outfit with any real color tonight is his scarf, which is grey with a purplish sheen.

Serafíne

Sera does not particularly love the cold. It's just that she will not let it interfere with her goddamned fashion sense. So: right. That's how Kalen finds them, Dan and Sera - on the front patio framing the house, framing the view of the undulating fields surrounding the property, which roll away in a pastoral landscape remote enough that it almost feels untouched. Denver is aglow beyond the horizon, though, and even out here sometimes the winding note of distant headlights flares through the gloom.

She's wearing something that leaves her legs mostly-bare as she usually does, Sera, and Kalen passed by her discarded leather jacket somewhere in the vicinity of the dining room. It smells like marijuana and clove cigarettes and this subtle, expensive French parfum that one would never really associated with her except: of course. Of course.

Absent the leather jacket her outer wear has been augmented by a chenille throw stolen from the living room, piled around her shoulders. This subtle, sage-green glow. She is drinking something - sipping something - from a stainless steel travel mug and turns around or is steered in that direction by one of Dan's arms when the glass sliders skim open and Kalen walks out, dressed for the weather, dressed for much worse weather, in grays and blacks and the sheen of that scarf alive in the moonlight.

"Hey." A sharp breath out. This shimmering smile tossed his way. A few sips in and the tea is already starting to hammer her senses. The moorings of reality slip further from her reach but: Kalen, she knows Kalen. She reaches for the scarf, which seems alive to her in the moonlight. Runs her thumb and forefinger over the nap, admiring the stream of light.

"I'm gonna fix the wards." A bit - hmm. Giddy? Laughter in her breath as she exhales, not quite able to let go of his scarf. "I've never done this before."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen smiles a little, watches her reach out and stays still so that she can examine his scarf. It, like the coat, is very soft, but a little more silky. The hint of shimmering purple makes his eyes more apparently green. Or perhaps it the reflection of laughter. Or her tea.

Dan gets a little nod while Sera investigates the play of light on his scarf, a very quick smile. Perhaps one day, they will speak. But, as it always does, his attention slides back to Serafine. Very little pulls his attention away from her for long, and Dan, unlike Alexander, doesn't pull at Kalen with an equal gravity.

"That's often the most interesting time," Kalen says. "I...know very little about warding. I could, perhaps, make the windows more bulletproof, but most of what I can do isn't terribly helpful in that regard."

Serafíne

"I know fuck-all about it," Sera is telling him, and he allows her to examine his scarf and she just keeps playing with it. She was tucked up against Dan when Kalen emerged from the chantry house proper but sort of unspooled herself from his arms to turn to greet Kalen and has not quiet returned. The chenille blanket trails haphazardly off her narrow frame, sliding now that she is not holding it closed with her free hand, "I mean I read some shit in the books in there and I've been - "

An open look, an open mind, backward, lilting, a glance at the sky, " - sliding around the idea for a while, just letting it fit inside me, and I remember Jim did it - I mean the way he did it, when we were on the run. I went back to see the hotel room but I think the wards he did then are faded now. The kids are still next door, though."

Sera does not understand how... disjointed her sentences sound. The run-on ideas, the flight of circumstance, and she still hasn't let go of the scarf. "I'm gonna keep people out though. Keep their heads out. I'm gonna make it kind of invisible to those who come looking. Kind of like, move on, move on, nothing to see here. I'm just not really sure how to start, you? Except with the 'shrooms. I mean, that part I have fucking down. You wanna walk with me? I thought I'd go down to the bottom of the field and - fuck. Get started."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen smiles a little wider and offers her an arm. It remains, perhaps, an outwardly formal gesture. There is nothing stiff or hesitant in the offer though. He considers these offers to Serafine no more formal than when he reaches out to hug her, for all he does that unbidden more rarely.

"Of course I'll walk with you." He watches her, and there is something about that look that is measuring. The composition of her sentences seems fine to him, but Kalen is rather used to being in the company of people in alternate states of consciousness. He's spent some time there too, but most of that is not recent. But the world still fragments for him sometimes, into probabilities and possibilities. And he remembers nights where truths fractured into light and then into colors and then-

No. Now.

"Tell me about what Jim did?"

Serafíne

Well. Kalen offers her an arm and Sera takes it and tucks herself against his side. Dan makes a quiet noise that sounds like a chuckle and gives her over Kalen's hands for the moment, though there's a moment's hesitation before he heads back inside. Then he delays Kalen with a quiet - "Hey," and tells him, quietly, that that shit Sera is drinking is going to hit her hard in about ten, fifteen minutes. This casting might take her a long time. Might take her all night and all day. If Kalen needs to split, he should let Dan know - let Dan know that he's going and know where he's left Sera. That quiet compact is finalized by a clap on Kalen's shoulder with an open hand, and then Dan does leave them and Sera (who is kinda rolling her eyes and also watching Dan, all winsome and aware) takes another sip from her mushroom tea and they start walking through the field, the dead grasses rustling with every step, the damp, dark earth - made sucking, muddy, treacherous by pockets of still-melting snow - squelching beneath their feet.

Good thing she's wearing her shit-kickers. Kalen, though, might need new shoes after this unexpected hike.

"Jim - did you ever meet him? Jim like, built the wards he mage by kind of framing them with his ritual. He wanted the cops and anyone who might be looking for us to be empty - be hungry - be wanton, to go looking for something that might fill that up instead of seeing us. So he started purging himself, like he was throwing up to frame that, to empty himself out. I mean it's weird.

"Time's easy for me but space. I keep reminding myself that it's just another fucking illusion and that everything is here and everything is now, but then I think about the sky full of stars and it all seems so vast and piercing I can't fucking conceptualize a way that they could be anything but scattered. But then I start walking, like now, just opening up my mind, and my senses feel stippled with place. Does that make any fucking sense? Like the way light comes in through the shadows in a room, scattered and pointilist, interrupted but still - shining. It makes me shiver, how clear it all is. How close. It makes my head tingle."

And shiver she does. Kalen can feel the slow coil of subtle magic lifting through her: something sensory, no more, this initial awareness of the field, the wood beyond. The house. It's shape against the mountains and the sky.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen smiles a little again when Dan starts giving him instructions. And he listens, because he knows only very basically what went into that tea. Knows nothing at all about how much Serafine has had or how much she normally has or how she normally reacts. His expression does not change when Dan reaches out to his shoulder, although Kalen's eyes track the movement. There are only so many people who move unmonitored into Kalen's space. There is a different breath, a slower inhale and exhale, softer. The set of his shoulders eases a little. And then he nods to Dan.

"I met Jim only once. He seemed...." He seemed like someone Kalen wanted to know, though he never had. "He seemed warm. But I only ever saw him at that one chantry meeting." He glances only occasionally at the ground. Mud washes out, washes off. And if it is stubborn enough there are more boots and more pants.

Kalen takes another breath as he considers her observations on space and time and stars. This one is less communion with her, and more like he could breathe in some universal truths, taste them and translate them into words. "It could be like light," he says. "All the stars seem scattered, maybe, but their light is here, in this place, with you." He says it as though all of the stars are there just for her, shining just for her. "Maybe you don't need everything in one place so much as you need the point at which it converges. The places where all the echoes interweave and you can touch them all. That you feel it all here."

He smiles a little. "But I don't...space. Only time and fate. They seem like they might not be so different, though."

Serafíne

"I miss Jim," Sera admits quietly. There is a supple thread of ache there - something that seems somehow both reserved and unstinting. "He was - "

Here she stops, pauses. Considers, and hums, beneath her breath. "I think there was a time when he was pretty violent. I never got the whole story but he knew a helluva lot of people that a pacifist stoner yoga instructor might never've met. He was in prison for a while and he was so fucking smart, man. He knew all this shit. Like, a lot like that little guy from fucking Star Wars. You know? The green one.

"With the whiskers and shit. Except the thing about movies and little green yoga instructors is that there's this big lie that they don't have their own shit, you know? And everyone else just thinks that they're so fucking amazing, zen and brilliant, calm and patient and loving - which doesn't mean they can't get hurt. Like when Jim and Sid had problems, Jim just fell the fuck apart.

"I dunno. He just hurt so much. He's just retreat into this pit of depression. Just - "

This story might not be the best way to start a trip. They're picking their way through the dead, dry grass in the field facing the chantry. She is still - sipping at her tea, Sera. The moon in the sky and the stars surrounding it, bright, too-bright and when she closes her eyes and thinks about their light as both singular and universal, each one feels like a pinprick against her skin.

It makes her shiver. Almost as much as the memory of Jim's despair.

"After Sid and Jim broke up, he told me that he'd always felt like he was moving. You know? Growing - like toward enlightenment and shit. I mean, shit I never think about. But after all that he told me he just felt like he was stuck. Like he wasn't moving. Like he didn't think he could - just that he was mired, and he'd lost that and he'd lost -

"Fuck. I didn't see him much again, after that. Still pay the rent on his motel room, though. Just in case he comes back and needs a place to crash."

She's quiet for a little while longer. There's probably not much to say to that and Sera might be crying, quietly, thoroughly, quite suddenly though perhaps not. surprisingly. As they reach the lower border of the field, she kinda leans into Kalen. Fewer tears, now, though they are still kinda leaking from the corners of her eyes.

"You know, usually when I do magic, I am losing myself in the world?" She's thinking about Jim. She's also thinking about stars and points of convergence, echoes and - "Maybe I also like, can let the world loose inside me. Pull it in? Open up to it in a different way. Maybe that's what I need to do.

"To make it real. You know?"

Kalen Holliday

"I only saw Sid after," Kalen says softly. And Sid was hurt. And then, not long after she curled up and cried on him, Sid had hurt him. He doesn't tell Serafine about that, though that is more about timing than anything. She wants to open herself to the world and that...he does not think she would refuse to open herself to the world and slice herself to ribbons against all its sharp edges. But he doesn't need to talk about Sid. He came home to his cabal, and his pseudoapprentice and his actual apprentice and Serafine. Because Ian dragged him for awhile until he would move. Mired. Mired is a good word for a place that he was.

He does not tell her not to cry. He does not comment on her crying. There is no sense of tension about it, and he drops his head for a second to rub his cheek against her shoulder. But there is no move to enfold her or to stop their walking.

"The woman who first taught me magic," he says, and his voice is still soft, but now with more warmth than sorrow, "Found it to be like that. And I do too, but I don't know if I would if she hadn't found me first. Every once in awhile, you remind me of her. She opens herself up to the world by breathing it in." And Kalen, too, Works with breath, Serafine has seen that. "Sometimes in the company of other things, but more than anything she connects to the world by breathing it in."

Sera glances at Kalen's profile. Sometimes she is so open to the world that she can vibe off the smallest details of a glance. That she sees things and knows things she has no right to see or know. Tonight is different. The hallucinogen she is ingesting is powerful, and already the edges of her vision are starting to smear and sing with strange tracers of light.

Her mouth is closed. Her face shining with the tracks of her mostly silent tears.

Then she glances away. Thoughtful. The world singing around her.

"That seems so intimate," she remarks, with a sort of spare wonder. "More intimate than anything I do, really. Kind of - raw you know?"

But Sera can also feel - somehow, immediately - just how it would work.

She breathes in again, abruptly, this deep and cutting breath just then

(...)

and, oh, makes this noise, as if someone had just pulled the world apart and put it back together inside of her.

Now she's seeing more than tracers: she sees the words as they leave her mouth in these widening waves. It is lovely, the way they roll over the sweep of the starlight.

"I don't - " Pause, and something about the pause feel generative, important, even as her senses start to do whatever the fuck it is they are doing to her right now. "I don't really remember learning magic, you know? It was always just what I did. What was in me. It's weird."

Kalen Holliday

[Do you notice why Sera sees sounds?]

Dice: 7 d10 TN6 (3, 5, 6, 9, 10, 10, 10) ( success x 5 )

Kalen Holliday

"It is. I can't imagine magic being anything but intimate. It's...like something you do with your soul. It's pretty much the most intimate thing I've ever experienced. On some level you have to reach out and change the world with something that is so intrinsically part of yourself that the edges of what is its and what is yours blur. And some people command it or force it, but...I can't imagine taking something so beautiful and trying to cage it.

"I've always just let it have me." Who let you into the Order again, Holliday? He watches Serafine's eyes, tastes little bursts of magic that spark and flare.

"Almost none of us really experience magic the same way. There are commonalities, more between some of us than others, but I don't think that for any of us it is the same. That's part of what I love. Finding the places our perceptions overlap and the places they diverge and what points of confluence there are."

Serafíne

Now it is Sera's turn to tip her head to the side. She rests her temple, briefly, on Kalen's shoulder. Feels the bony curve cushioned by the wrapping bulk of his fine winter coat. Watches the way the words spill from his mouth in waves. Turns her head and inhales Kalen's scent filtered through wool, smiling, soft and slow. Just hanging there for the moment.

Then she pulls back.

They've come to the edge of the lower field, encircled by an old fence outside of which is a small, scrubby copse of woods that shields the chantry and its property from any and all public roads.

"I want to go over," Sera tells him. "I want to start in the woods."

So she drinks more of her tea and it really is almost gone and then she hands him the mug and starts to climb over the fence. Maybe he helps her. The fence is low and easy to clamber over, though Sera's task is complicated by her altered consciousness.

Her blanket drags on the fence posts once she has cleared it, and then she reaches over to take her tea, and to offer Kalen a hand if he wants one to join her.

She's thinking about what he said, though, I've always just let it have me, the whole time.

"Do you mean that, Kalen? That you've always just let magic have you?"

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does assist her, though that assistance involves mostly holding her tea and disentangling the blanket from the rough edges of the fence. His fingertips trace over a place where a few threads remain after the blanket if freed, rough edges and soft threads and that is for a second the universe. Thoughts caught and fates entangled.

He comes across the fence after a second of his attention being oddly captivated by thread. Five years ago it would have been graceful. A year ago he could barely have done it at all. Now there is little enough impressive about it, just functional.

"Yeah. I have intentions...? Maybe more like prayers. But I don't...I never saw it as control so much as communion. The world is so...indescribably gorgeous and complex. I really see it, when I Work. I'm part of it. I mean, I always am, but I really feel it then." He frowns, because what Kalen really experiences with magic is difficult to explain. "Things sort of...the essences of them or the truth of them...it's very hard to describe.

"But magic never seemed so much a thing that we do as a thing that we are for me. It saved me, when I Awakened. Not just from a vampire but from myself. It's how I met Kharisma and Jack and how I came to the Order and those things are the things that made me real. At least as you know me."

Serafíne

They are in the woods now. The ground is rougher, these little scrub oaks are much taller when they stand in their shadows. Cutting past them: a narrow ditch that turns into a small stream when the snows melt in the spring, and anytime a gullywasher catches the eastern face of the Rockies unexpectedly in the summer or fall.

Just now it is choked with nothing more than pine needles and leaves.

"This is going to sound really fucking weird, Kalen, coming from me." The way she feels the world. Even what she's doing right now. The shrooms that enable her Work.

"But I think sometimes you need to do more than just let magic have you, you know? You need to take it instead. Write yourself into the world instead of just giving yourself over to it. Is that a fucked up think for me to say?"

--

They needn't walk far. Somewhere in the copse of trees, Sera finds a clearing. And somewhere in the clearing, she shrugs off the blanket and spreads it beneath the limbs of one of the larger trees. The ground's muddy, damp. It hardly matters to her. Maybe that's why she brought the blanket. Without it, of course, she's just wearing her stupid t-shirt and cut-off jeans and fishnets, but at the moment, she also doesn't seem to feel the cold.

Kalen Holliday

"Some of it is just how I've always done this. I reach out and brush against something immense and sublime and everything dissolves for a few seconds into something...." He searches for a word in a language she can understand. "Pure. Holy."

There is a pause. "I know people who want to master their gifts, want to shape them into what they want them to be. They are not, all of them, terrible. But I have seen what becomes of us when we twist what are into an abomination. It is done by inches and degrees.

"There may be a day when I know myself well enough to judge where the edges are. But so far I have never needed to command. I just reach out and there is a moment where...it is transcendent. And that is where magic happens for me, from that place. I don't doubt that I could command. I just don't.

"But I understand why you would think that I should. And it is not a fucked up thing to say."

Serafíne

"That's not what I mean, really." It is so hard for her to stay clear, right now. The edges of her perception are starting to be torn away, and she can feel her heart beating faster in her chest If she allows herself to just feel it, she might believe that it could break her ribs, shatter her sternum. Strange how our bodies rule us. And she feels a bit like a galaxy though how the hell does she know that word, how can she begin to imagine what a galaxy feels, all those arms, all that light, and just what she is, a bit staggered by her perceptions, struggling to pull back together all the pieces that make up herself. The blanket spread out and she no longer really feels the cold. Finishes the remainder of the mushroom tea and isn't quite sure what to do next.

How the fuck do you start?

She has a moment of remarkable dis-orientation

And then: Kalen. Kalen standing there steady and strange in his own way. Oh,

"I mean, I think sometimes you just let things happen to you. You know? Instead of being present for them. Instead of acting. When you have space to think, you get lost in it. That's what I meant. Though fuck if I know if I'm right."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen laughs, and there is something sad in it, maybe. "That is true. But that's a different thing really. I can't help but be engaged with magic. I think it is less true than when I first came to Denver, that paralysis thing that I do. But it will likely still take a bit longer to break away from that more fully." He notices that Serafine has her blanket outstretched, but he doesn't try to correct that, at least not yet.

"Sometimes I feel alarmingly muffled. Like I'm caught in a chrysalis. Everything about me has always been mutable. When this is over, I'm not sure I'll really be who any of you know, anymore. I'm always terrified that...." He pauses. Takes a breath. "I will wake one day and realize that I gave up on the things that made the parts of my life here that I love real."

Ian

It was a long drive to make for something as simple as an outdoor hike. There was, after all, plenty of picturesque scenery both in and around Denver proper. Ian had no real reason to be at the Chantry, in particular, beyond the fact that it was the Chantry. That the place was sprawling and calm and beautiful and resonated with rejuvenating energy.

And if there were other reasons, he kept them to himself.

His car wound its way up the road, past the field where Sera and Kalen were discussing the nature of magic. All the way to the end of the driveway, where he parked. His first impulse was to make his way into the house, going around the back way through the patio door. His eyes cast a surveying glance over the state of the place. Looking, perhaps, for someone in particular. (Listening, sensing.) Perhaps Dan was there to greet him. Perhaps no one way. Either way, he made his way into the kitchen for a glass of water.

Serafíne

Ian finds Dan in the kitchen, cleaning up the necessaries for Sera's ritual. By now he has thrown away the spent shrooms and scrubbed the pot thoroughly so that the first person who decides to make mac'n'cheese using that little pot will not have an unexpected surprise. The tall consor greets Ian quietly, lifts his chin toward the front field. That vague direction. Informs Ian quietly that Sera intends to ward the place. That Kalen's with her, down at the easternmost edge of the property, maybe a bit beyond.

That's where she was going to start.

Serafíne

Kalen considers correcting her - not now, maybe later. There's no bloody reason she should expose herself to the weather the way she does except she has a particular sense of fashion, and in moments like this she doesn't really feel the cold as cold, precisely. Her senses are so warped that she feels close and she feels warm and she feels pacingly constrained and she wants her shoes off for both no reason and every reason.

But something that Kalen says brings her blazingly back into focus, and what he says brings tears right back to her eyes. Sera breathes out sharply. She lets go that effect she hardly understands she initiated, which turned words into - what, something lovely, moving, visible. Lets go of her sense of place too and is reaching for - what she hardly knows to name. The borders of the place. the boundaries of it.

"Fuck, Kalen. Why the hell do you think you're going to let go? Please don't be afraid of that. Just hold on like hell, yeah? That's all you need to do. And if you let it go - grab like fuck until it's back in your hands. I swear to god. That's in your power.

"Everything isn't, but that much is. You know?"

Ian

Ian was dressed in warm athletic clothes and a shiny black and silver windbreaker. Maybe he meant to go for a run, maybe just a hike. He greeted Dan with a familiar tip of his head. They spoke briefly while Ian finished off his drink. When he was done, he moved through the house and exited the front door, trotting down the stone steps to make his way into the field.

And out there, in the distance, stood two all-too-familiar figures.

Ian broke into a jog, moving with quiet agility across the cold and brittle ground. As he neared, his steps slowed to a more relaxed pace, approaching with enough caution to be sure he wasn't interrupting Sera's ritual.

(But no, they were talking.)

"Feel like company?" he asked this of them both, eyes sliding from Sera to hover a moment on Kalen.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen laughs and there is something wild in it. "You make it sound easy. Maybe it is. I got Christmas trees. And ornaments. Some with the year on them. Because then I can do-" The same thing next year, he doesn't finish because Ian is coming. And he adores Ian; Hell, he's still in love with Ian. Learning Life magic from Ian was a different kind of vulnerability. He's not sure about this one.

Grab like fuck until it's back in your hands, Serafine had said. And if it never had been?

He smiles anyway, and he means it, because he does like to see Ian. "Hey. Sure."

Serafíne

Oooh, Perception + Awareness-as-empathy on Kalen.

Dice: 7 d10 TN5 (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 9) ( success x 4 )

Serafíne

Then: Ian, who asks if they feel like company and Sera is smiling, smiling - her senses blown out, her pupils enormous by now though that may be hard to see in the failing light. But she smiles at Ian and her gaze slides from Ian to Kalen and back again and Kalen says, "Hey. Sure."

He's still in love with Ian. Adores him.

Sera still thinks Ian is kind of a jerk.

That's okay. It's all okay.

--

Sera's dark make-up is smeared from the tears she shed earlier and maybe some of the tears still in her eyes, but what else could one expect of her? She is nothing if not messy, and her messy attention is centered on Kalen more than Ian (even that glance slides back, as if Kalen had some specific gravity tonight) but she still gives Ian this kind of smile. "I don't mean that it is easy. I mean it's fucking not. It's exactly the opposite of it. But you don't spare yourself - or anyone else - by waiting for it. By expecting it.

"Fuck." Another glance at Ian, still half-smiling. "We were talking about magic, and letting it happen to you, and then I think we started talking about something else entirely. Making other shit happen instead of just waiting. Kalen, I know this sound weird.

"But I care about you. I know you care about me. I just want you to be present in your life. I know you've lost a fuckin hell of a lot - but we're all here now. And maybe you've lost pieces of that, and maybe you'll lose more later - but right now, right here. You know? I want you to be here, instead of being afraid of yesterday or tomorrow, of hubris or vanity.

"I sound like an asshole. But I fucking mean it."

Ian

It was, actually, a very similar speech to the one that Ian himself had given Kalen. Only Sera knew how to make it feel poignant. And in that moment, Ian felt very much as though he had interrupted. Maybe because it wasn't really his place any longer to judge Kalen on how he lived his life. Maybe it never had been.

He let his hands slide into the pockets of his jacket, angling his gaze toward the sky for a moment - as though suddenly aware of the stars. When his attention refocused (it never really left,) he fell into place near Kalen's side, splaying a hand against the small of Kalen's back. Gentle and grounding. Affectionate, even.

"Don't worry Sera, you'll never sound like a bigger asshole than me. And, for the record, I agree with you."

Kalen Holliday

Be here. Right now. It what all of your friends tell you.

He relaxes a little when Ian reaches out him. "For the record, as neither of you has thrown anything at me and then threatened me, you are not even in the running for most abrasive version of this conversation. Alyssa threw a boot at my head. Right after I got out of the fucking hospital and couldn't dodge." There is only affection in his tone though. Boot-throwing is within the threshold of things Kalen will interpret as love.

[And, sadly, you get probably one more post from me before I fall asleep.]

Serafíne

Somehow, beneath all that, Kalen's affection (over post-hospital boot-throwing and whatever else is beneath that that Sera does not know or understand) seems as if it is constructed of -

Wait. No. She breathes out. Watching Kalen relax into Ian's touch. Is aware, also, of Ian's touch. The affection. The support. She smiles.

The world is starting to spin again and she gives herself over to that. Sera takes another breath in that feels spiked and entangled and some part of her wants to pull everything - everything - right back into herself.

"You guys should go make out or something," she murmurs, lifting her hands to her golden curls, pushing her fingers through the mass. Reaching, reaching.

Reaching.

"I need to Work."

Ian

You guys should go make out or something.

Ian smirked, but the expression lacked bite. He let his hand fall away from Kalen's back. "Sure you'll be okay?"

He'd seen Sera work before. Knew full well how powerful she could be. But he asked anyway, because she was high, and because the forces they worked with were not always forgiving. Because he didn't like leaving people alone when they were vulnerable.

"I can send Dan out."

He didn't respond to the suggestion of intimacy between himself and Kalen. Maybe he didn't feel like it needed a response. But either way, if Sera confirmed that she did, in fact, wish them to go, then he would - placing a light touch to Kalen's shoulder to indicate that he should follow.

Kalen Holliday

Regardless of what Serafine says, Kalen promised Dan earlier about what he would do if he left her. One way or another, Dan will know.

He follows after Ian easily enough; for all that he can be protective as he can be of Serafine, he reserves that for mostly different situations. Tonight, she gets to Work.

[Thank you both for scenes! *flop*]

Serafíne

Ian offers to send Dan out and Sera - who is now wearing denim cut-offs and a t-shirt and fishnets and combat boots on a night when the low is expected to be below freezing, makes this lovely dismissive sound. She's an adult. She's a Disciple. She can totally take care of herself.

And yet, somehow, everyone who has ever met her knows that for a lie.

There's enough awareness there, though, that Ian might well be confident in the thought that Sera requires no one. He doesn't know how powerful the hallucinogen she ingested was. He may not even understand (though perhaps he does) how thoroughly feckless she is. But Kalen does - or at the very least, Kalen made a promise to the consor that he wouldn't leave Sera alone.

So they leave her. And they - at some point - inform Dan that they have left her, and where. And she gives herself over to her high. Sinks to her knees on the blanket, then back to her haunches. Sags back for a time, and just allows herself to feel. The space around her. This great abiding sense of it.

She has no idea how long that lasts. How long it takes her to gather herself to herself, until she starts to -

Oh - the first piece is exquisite, somehow both piercing and hidden but the second piece comes up so wrong it leaves her retching. And maybe that's what she needs - to drive strangers away. That wrongness not just the rightness. So she works: alll night and perhaps alll day, until she has spent herself, whole and entire. Until she is done.
