[Trillian chirping at me totally woke me up so if I do it it will be nonsensical. And might involve technicolor mermaids. I'm not saying I won't - just that you should fucking be prepared if you try to make me use words in this exact moment.]

Alicia

Details aren't important. This is a large outdoor event and it costs nothing to get in. Tents everywhere. People are selling things or trying things before they commit to buying the things and there is a stage somewhere small where a band is playing. A brass band no singer though the songs are popular if not easy to recognize and the general aura surrounding the event is casual and mostly harmless and slightly drunk.

It's a nice day. Sunny. Nightfall is imminent but nightfall doesn't mean anything to the event or the people at the event. It's outdoors. Somehow lights will come on. Strings of them or candles. It smells like citronella in places where it doesn't smell like cooking meat or frying vegetables.

Alicia is near the brass band. She has a bright green paper bracelet around her wrist and it matches the bright green of the dead plastic watch on the other wrist. She's wearing sunglasses and a yellow sundress. Her hair is down. She and her plastic cup of beer are dancing.

Someone somewhere is smoking a joint. It isn't Alicia.

As of this moment there are no mermaids.

Hawksley is sleeping on the grass. He would be a good candidate for Hipster or Homeless? if it weren't for the fact that his neck is neatly cleanshaven, his fingernails are as clean as though recently manicured

(the secret: they were recently manicured)

and his clothing has that subtle but evident touch of quality, of cost. The softness of the fabric, the careful drape and fall, the way every piece seems made just for his body, tailored specifically to his form

(the secret: all of his clothes are tailored to his form).

His arm is over his eyes. His back is flat on the grass. He's wearing shorts, white linen ones. He's wearing a t-shirt, a dark blue faded one with a V neck, but not a deep V, because Hawksley is of the opinion that the deep V is gauche. There is a watch on his left wrist, and the band is white leather and the rim is white gold. Because his clothing is so tidily, perfectly tailored, the rise and fall of his chest as he breathes calls attention to the shape and shadow of the muscles in that chest, which are firm and which are strong, as though he spends a significant amount of time shaping them with weightlifting, feeding them with lean proteins, sculpting his body as though it is as much his masterpiece as anything else he might offer to the world.

You will be able to guess one more secret.

Here's the last: none of Hawksley's masterpieces are offerings to the world. Hawksley does not give much of a fuck about the world.

--

It's very hard to sleep, suddenly. His nostrils flare; he breathes in sharp. He opens his eyes and see his forearm pressed there, all red and gilded by the fading light. He shifts his arm. He moves it down his nose, past his mouth, rests it on his chest, while his head tilts back.

He looks directly at Alicia. Upside-down, mind you, but looks straight at her. His eyes are pale, his eyes are piercing. His head, upside-down or no, tips slightly to one side, avian in its curiosity.

Hawksley stares. This is rude.

Hawksley does not care about that, either.

[hah HAH NO WINGS FOR YOU TONIGHT SUCKER]

Kalen Holliday

Kalen lets someone put a strip of paper around his wrist. Not very long ago there was music and someone tying bracelets on his wrist. They were knotted hemp and colorful glass beads, and despite the fact that he still can't remember who put them there or why he still hasn't cut them off. They've been on long enough to soften now. To pick up the scent of incense and shampoo.

The paper bracelet joins the ranks of things put on his wrist by strangers and then he wanders into the crowd. Other than the things at his wrist, he is not colorful - pale grey jeans, darker grey shirt, pale skin and pale blonde hair. Even his eyes are so pale you have to be practically on top of him before you can tell they're green. He looks like hasn't slept in...possibly decades at this point. At least not much.

The world stops for nothing, though. So he drifts through the crowd and ends up with a plastic cup full of something that people claim is beer, though he himself would (in a less charitable mood) raise an eyebrow at that claim.

Drift. Drift. Drift.

Look! Alicia. He waves and he might have gone to her except he is drowning in sunlight and he might be flying and it takes him a few seconds to find Hawksley because Hawksley is on the ground and that doesn't seem right because nothing seems anchored to the earth but he heads toward Hawksley anyway.

Serafíne

There are no mermaids. Just a creature in a hot little leather skirt with a bit of an A-line and silver buttons down the front and a cropped white t-shirt turned inside out over a black lace bra. She has a crop of necklaces encircling her neck, everything from rubber to leather to an elegant Tahitian pearl - black - set in a high-polished swoop of platinum that nestles in the hollow of her throat, and a spike through her ear and a knuckle duster ring spanning three fingers on her left hand and a little bronze ring and a handful of others on her right and a huge leather cuff around her left wrist draped 'round with something sparkly and that something sparkly has to be fake because who the fuck looks like that and has that many carats of D-flawless diamonds around their wrist?

Well: her.

There's a tent where these two local guys - one an ex-Pharma exec, the other a mediocre poet - the sort who uses it to get laid rather than to, you know, explore his own humanity - are selling their home(ish) brew absinthe and Sera has been 'tasting' the absinthe in all its incarnations and now has some sort of concoction in a red solo cup that is decidedly not a beer and the night has a bracing brilliance to it; somehow she wanders out of that tent and does not quite expect the sunset. Might be thinking that the world made up this setting-sun thing just for her, and Dee's sliding up behind her, wrapping an arm around Sera's shoulders, leaning close to murmur something in Sera's ear, carrying a bag with their purchases (ABSINTHE, Christ) in the other hand, and Sera's mouth skims over the mouth of her red solo cup and she turns her head, inhaling, murmuring something close to the rim of Dee's ear when she feels -

- what does she feel?

something chaotic.

So. So.

Sera murmurs her goodbyes and kisses Dee first on the temple (tip-toes) and then on the mouth and leaves her friends behind and approaches Alicia at the edge of the crowd and lifts her own cup in toast and and and and -

"Hey! You - ! I remember you.

"I remember," like you know, memory is a zipline, is a constellation, is a universe, is a revelation, is not just something people do every fucking day, "Alicia, right? Fuck. It was - "

Hawksley Rothschild

True story: Hawksley never feels anchored to the earth. He never has, but especially these days, he may as well be levitating a bit above the grass. No, not a bit above it: he is caught mid-dive, he is down here to snatch up a mouse that was scurrying, unseen to the humans walking around it but a red flare of life, calling out to his hunger. Any second now he will have it in his talons and be taking off again, beating wings against the earth, fighting gravity and winning,

again and again and again. Always.

It rained earlier. The air still smells of it. Hawksley breathes in and smells the grass that tickles his temples and of course he smells the meat cooking and the beer and all the people, but he is feeling other things beyond those immediate sensory impressions. He's feeling the roiling primordial chaos of time before time and creation before form, and he is feeling the endless potentiality of all things at once, when they have not become Things at all.

He is also feeling a storm in the air.

He is also feeling the sky herself, though not many would describe her as such. But visceral: yes, to him. Enthralling: yes, to him. Liminal: yes, of course.

On the other hand, that girl feels like the beginning of creation, and she is wearing his favorite color. So he goes on staring.

Alicia

Once upon a time Alicia did normal teenage girl things like gymnastics and volleyball and getting wrecked skateboarding in the park like she wasn't supposed to be doing. She isn't very old. She hasn't forgotten how to move as if her bones are made of water but she wouldn't call herself normal anymore either.

Hard to tell if her eyes are open as she's dancing. She's keeping her limbs in close so she doesn't smack someone with a flailing wrist but she doesn't dance stiff like a reed blustered by breeze either.

She has an effect going. It's not powerful but it is complicated. Space and patterns and the essence of everything. Time. Searching without focusing.

A convergence of other people and their resonation and she keeps dancing. Hawksley can stare all he wants. She stares at Kalen for a second until the recognition hits and then she returns the wave. Matches him for strength and exuberance and then twirls around. Her hem and her hair kick up and there's the woman she couldn't ignore. Still can't ignore.

One cup lifts and Alicia slows but does not stop her dancing. Has to rake her hair back from her brow to get it out of her face.

"I Never," she says. Takes a couple steps back like to make room for Sera and points over to the band with her cup. "They're awesome, aren't they?" And goes back to dancing.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does not wave to Serafine when she comes slipping through space and probability and a crowd of people. Instead, he pauses, meets her eyes for a second, and then nods. It's through a crowd and it's barely any motion at all and it is still somehow more than almost anyone gets from him. Perhaps because there is nothing of a show to it. Kalen does so very few things that honestly. Simply on occasion, but honestly...that's never been his thing.

He continues toward Hawksley and settles onto the grass beside him. For a second, as he drops to the earth, for an impossible second, it really does seem like they might not be on the ground at all. But then there are blades of grass under his fingertips and earth and tiny rocks. The rocks are flying and they are on the rocks and everything is-

"Hey," he says. He combs through the grass with the hand not holding a cup of beer he's already lost interest in.

Serafíne

I Never and Sera does not understand the reference, just then, she's hearing it as something it, feeling the words tied together and then pulled apart in the back of her skull, thinks that Alicia is telling her that she has actually never something? and Sera is already inhaling, tipsy, not drunk, but other things also you see, to tell Alicia

no no no you have and her mouth is forming the words but they aren't getting much traction in her throat and Alicia is making room for her and the band is great, aren't they?

"They have a tuba!"

There is no tuba. Maybe a trombone or too and a nice horn section and whatever, the music is fine but weird for her, too tame, and dancing barefoot in parks is less her thing than stagediving in dive bars, and Serafíne feels Alicia's small complicated magics, tastes them in the back of her throat, takes a drink from her own cup, the fine herbal burn of the Absinthe-cocktail-concoction bittersweet at the back of her palate, and reaches out to take Alicia's free hand in her own free hand and spin her around,

dancing,

dancing, with, you know, a lovely little bit of drunken stumbling worked in there for good measure, and doesn't seem inclined to let go of Alicia's hand.

Everything in the world is better, after all, with connection.

[Watch the Weaving: whatcha up to, Alicia! Difficulty 5: -1 for practiced.]

Hawksley Rothschild

There is something predatory about Hawksley, but it's not entirely his fault. It's his eyes, and the aquiline features he has. And then there's the part that is entirely his fault: the lack of concern, the dampened empathy, the distance. Or maybe that is not his fault so much as his nature, just as much as the eyes and the face. He seems very far away, and the world is distant to him.

Except he smiles a little, because he sees the cheery yellow sun talking to the endless sky. It makes him happy, in a small and oddly tender way.

Kalen plops down beside him, and for the first time since opening his eyes, Hawksley takes them off of Alicia. He looks at the other Hermetic with drowsy eyes that have lost some of their sharpness. "That was the most hitting-on-me 'hey' I've heard since I woke up,"

not that Kalen knows he woke up about thirty seconds ago. He gives him an upward nod. "How you been?"

Alicia

Hard to tell what Alicia is feeling for when she opens up her senses like she has them open but Sera can see the way it pulses out over everything pinging like a sonar and dissipating when it does not encounter metal buried inside flesh. Nothing to worry about right this second but that does not mean she has nothing to fear. One of the first things she learned when she opened her eyes was fear.

They have a tuba!

"Where!" she asks.

Her magick comes from her fear and the alcohol. The dead plastic on her wrist and the music. Everybody knows what she could be feeling for. She doesn't know everybody knows. Alicia is not on the Ginger access list and Elijah has not told her who he's told. She takes Sera's hand and twirls.

And then stumbles. She almost falls into Sera. Maybe they do fall into each other. She laughs. It's a clear sound and honest and she intends to dance through the rest of the song but the song is over in a few more seconds.

She rakes her fingers through her hair again.

"Woo!" Like it's a word and not just an exclamation. "Is that Kalen?"

Kalen Holliday

"Mmmmmmmmmm...I must be having a good day if my whole goodwill toward men thing extends to hitting on you," Kalen says, a hint of something warm and amused edging into the tone. It isn't quite the answer to the question Hawksley asked, but Hawksley would probably stop paying attention a few words into a real answer anyway. If he hadn't stopped paying attention before he finished asking the question.

"You?" He looks away from Hawksley, watching through shifting currents of people as Alicia and Sera dance. He doesn't need to see Hawksley. He probably doesn't need to be this close to Hawksley. This is probably as advisable as drawing close to the sun. But those who were not born to the sky were so very enamored of their wax and feather wings.

Hawksley Rothschild

Kalen gets it: he could go more in depth, but Hawksley would stop listening. At least today. At least right now, when there's music and people. Hawksley stretches, then, all legs and arms, his body tensing for a moment from toes to fingertips, and then he sits up. He does not brace his hands on the grass. He sits up, arms going over his knees, knees coming up, coiling into a sitting position. Reaching back, he scuffs his hand through his hair, shaking out a few blades of grass. His back is to Alicia and Sera now. He has noticed how close Kalen is sitting, but he already mentioned Kalen hitting on him and Kalen didn't deny it, so he's not precisely taken aback.

"Been at least moderately drunk for about three days," he says. "Summer's fading."

So says the weatherman. So says the rain. He sighs. Glances over his shoulder at the two women, one of whom he knows and one of whom he wonders about: is she new-last-Tuesday? Another one? He looks back at Kalen. He doesn't say a word, but the glance is a question, an open hand expecting information.

There is something regal about that. Casually, ambivalently, unintentionally kingly.

Serafíne

Here is a wee little secret: Serafíne does not pay much attention to Ginger. There are periods when she gets a little obsessed with Ginger's sexy robot voice and sprawls in her armchair (and shoving all the accumulated clothes off onto the floor) or in the middle of her bed, the windows in her room high and wide, filled with the branches of the old, well-tended tree around which the backyard proper seems to have been constructed, and, stoned, calls Ginger again and again and again just to hear that voice.

Not lately, though.

Dan pays attention for her.

--

So: fear; enough right there to bring even fucked-up Sera briefly up short, to make her inhale, and lift her chin, and open her eyes wide enough to see Alicia move, see the lights skim brilliant in varying succession over the glossy waves of her dark hair. Sera is not taller than many, but she is taller than Alicia. Much, much taller, you now, as a relative measure. She can see the crown of Alicia's head, the stapled pattern of her strange and complex working, the undercurrents framing it and -

Alicia stumbles. Maybe falls into Sera; almost falls into Sera; and then, does not precisely fall into Sera but is pulled in and Sera wraps her arms around Alicia's shoulders and presses her humid mouth to Alicia's temple and there's alcohol on her breath and alcohol sloshed out of her cup and nothing about Sera feels like safety. Her resonance is quite-the-opposite of safe, but here she is, a brief moment carved out of every other one in the midst of the crowd, smiling against Alicia's skin, hardly seeming to notice when Alicia draws back to start dancing again, or whatever.

Is that Kalen?

"Mmm." Murmurs Sera, " - and Hawksley. C'mon."

Unless Alicia insists on more-dancing, Sera starts to tug her through the crowd, toward the gentlemen.

Kalen Holliday

"In this hemisphere," Kalen says, but he is smiling. "Please don't be about to get all mythic Greek drama about winter. I don't think I can draft enough epic similes to keep up with that madness. And that kind of thing really does lend itself to epic similes.

"Way better than rhymed couplets though."

Hawksley get his attention back, at least in the sense of where Kalen is looking, when he sits up. Kalen follows Hawksley's attention to Serafine and Alicia. Returns his attention to Hawksley and raises an eyebrow at that look. He doesn't seem annoyed by it though, at least not tonight.

"Ah. She's...." Kalen shrugs. "Honestly I don''t really know. She's not terribly fond of me. I may not have been in the most patient or gentle place when I met her. I may have handed her off to Lena." He doesn't seem terribly concerned what Alicia thinks.

Hawksley Rothschild

"You?" Hawksley says, feigning surprise. "But Kalen, you're so naturally personable and socially smooth." He says this, and it's about as dry as you can expect. It's up to Kalen whether he interprets it as malice or just... Hawksley. "What's her name? And who the fuck is Lena?"

Alicia

If she didn't pull away from Sera she would have stayed there longer than is healthy when one barely knows a person. They know each other better than they did two months ago but alcohol has the ability to obliterate connections just as quick as it creates them and they were drinking the last time. When she slowed down time and Elijah decided he wanted to kiss Alicia and so he did.

She doesn't know where Elijah is right now. She has a life that does not revolve around him.

Sera does not hold onto her tight and the moment plays on. Hair out of her face and soon as it's swept back her hand is taken up by the Cultist's and Alicia goes with her not terribly fond of Kalen or not.

"I haven't met Hawksley," she says.

Alicia makes everyone look like a giant. She's wearing sneakers and they don't do her height any favors. As Sera guides her towards the two men of questionable gentleness the girl takes a big swig of her beer.

Serafíne

"Ooooh," Sera is saying and sipping her absinthe-thing from a goddamned red solo cup as they leave the dancing behind and pick their way over the muddied ground, past the dancers toward the lawn, and it is dark or getting there, so the sober picnickers are all packing up and the drunk ones are - well - some of them are enjoying themselves in all the ways one enjoys oneself on a late summer evening.

"Hawksley's amazing. You're gonna adore him."

She has her own blinders, Serafíne.

And Kalen has time to answer Hawksley's questions but then, you know: Serafíne is there, circling in, pulling Alicia behind, having figured out the calculus of juggling girl-and-drink and is stumbling into the setting, a bit sloppy see, laughing and steadying herself with a hand freed briefly from Alicia's to brace herself on Hawksley's shoulder as she lowers herself to the grass on the side opposite Kalen.

"This is Alicia," she is telling them - one? both? - smiling and happy to be smiling, holding up a hand to introduce Alicia. Then she looks down at the mug and holds it over toward Hawksley, introducing the red solo cup as well. "This is absinthe. Hi.

"Hi Hi Hi." Sera says, the way she does. Then she kisses Hawksley, the way she does. Then she peaks over and sort of finger-waves at Kalen, smiling, inhaling the scent of rain still lingering in the air.

Hawksley Rothschild

'Hawksley' has just about the most on-the-nose name since anyone. That explains the way he looks. That explains the sharpness in his eyes. That explains the way he notices when Sera and Alicia are making their way over, canting his head that way, quick and light. Say this, for his questionable gentleness:

as they approach, he rises. This time he does use the earth for leverage, which is one of the only uses he has for the blasted thing (one might surmise). He has an inherent grace, but that may just be his resonance playing with the mind. And yes, he is quite tall, and his shoulders are quite broad, and his skin is golden and in another light, in another life,

under another sun,

he would very much pass for Apollo. Or Ra. Or someone else, some other sun-god, son-god, less identifiable, less human in seeming.

--

He is amazing. And he is worthy of adoration. And totes adorbs, to boot.

Kalen has time, and maybe Kalen answers, but then Alicia and Sera are there, and Hawksley is watching as Sera lowers herself to the grass, smooching him on the way down, bracing herself against him on the way down, and perhaps he offers her a hand, smooth as you please, to ease her way. And he is staring at Alicia again, though less intently, and not upside-down this time.

"Alicia," he says, and offers her a hand. To shake. To five. Hell: to lay her palm on his palm all ladylike and fancy. Probably to five. God fucking knows. His other hand is at his side, plucking the cup from Sera's hand and taking a sip of absinthe-something, absently.

Kalen Holliday

It is Serafine who introduces Alicia and Hawksley in the end, which suits Kalen fine. He keeps going out and running into people, sometimes at park benches and sometimes on rooftops and sometimes fated meetings at gunpoint and all of those things fall into place in the same way that stars and planets shift into alignment, but Kalen came here for the kind of strangers that tie things onto his wrists and maybe his skin or their skin has a lingering impression of teeth in the morning. Hawksley was one thing, because despite being a stranger Kalen sees often enough, Hawksley is still mostly a stranger. There aren't any teethmarks, but that is fine. Even Alicia would have been fine for his original purpose because with enough distance...with enough distance nothing touches you.

But Serafine...there is no world where he could not feel anything for her. Because of her.

He watches them draw closer, watches Hawksley rise, watches introductions and kisses and greetings in silence. When that is over, he meets Sera's eyes again and gives another nod that is more a lowering of his gaze than a motion of his head. And then Alicia gets another wave. "Hey."

Serafíne

There is a kind of symmetry here. Hawksley rising to greet them, Serafíne curling in and making introductions and and handing off her absinthe-something cup and yes, accepting his smooth-as-you-please hand to lower her to the ground and now he has the cup and she does not have the cup and Sera is somewhat surprised by its absence and also Hawksley's grandeur and she tips her head back and her curls and loose and framed with sweat and she's smiling and in one of those moods where she is just so fucking amazed by how long her hair is when she tilts her head back! It is a miracle! It is so much longer!

So she tilts her head back and Hawksley and Alicia who are SO HIGH UP make her think of Titans or some fucking thing, and she inhales, happy that her lungs still work, then drops her head and catches that glance and nearly-a-nod that Kalen gives her and smiles at him all indulgent and rises from her ass to her knees and sort of crawl-curls over to stretch out - on her back, in the grass - beside Kalen, both hands laced to cradle her skull.

"Hey," she says to Kalen on the way over. Nudges his knee with hers mid-crawl. That hey is both a greeting and an inquiry, you understand. It is a checking-in. It is just for him.

Alicia

"Sup!"

In their presence it is an obvious thing that her power is tiny and new. That she cannot open up a door in a solid wall or levitate an object too heavy to pick up or call down lightning out of the sky yet. Sure as shit can't rewrite time. She can see time and she can sense its passage and she can tell when someone has rippled it. That's a power in its own right.

She doesn't give those who still slumber the idea that they're in the presence of a strangeness. Only people like them can sense the nature of her Working. That there's no order to what she's doing.

Their presence could overwhelm her but she isn't so new as Elijah is. She doesn't have that same childlike sense of wonder at the world around her.

Hawksley gets a high five. Her palm is warm. She does not have delicate hands. She wears a plain silver band on her right thumb. That silver band is loose on her and it resonates with the Working of the person to whom it belonged before it belonged to her but it's a quiet resonation. Cyclic and bubbling and explosive. With enough time it will fade away.

"Your beer's so full," she says to Kalen.

Hawksley Rothschild

Alicia says Sup! and Hawksley is overcome, quite suddenly, by an urge to glomp her up and squish her, oh my god. It's not even her relative lack of power, which is of about as much interest to him as another video on Facebook of so-and-so's first baby learning to walk,

not that Hawksley has friends who are having babies, or continues to have friends once they have babies.

He wouldn't be able to put his finger on it directly, but he's not really trying. He just has that overwhelming urge, and it passes because he does nothing with it. That is the difference between Hawksley and the Cultists, when occasionally it seems he fits in with them a little too well: he has an urge, a passion, a drive, and simply brushes it aside sometimes. In favor of other things. Other pursuits. Other passions.

She fives him and they both have warm hands, but it's summer. He feels a vibration go through his palm, tingling in his wrist and up his arm, insinuating itself into his humerus and up to his shoulder, stabbing into his heart, and it takes just about everything he's got to keep himself from grabbing her hand and examining it -- not the hand. The vibration. The Work. Hawksley, though, is far more self-controlled than he lets on. And he is not gonna grab some strange girl's hand like that when he's trying to be polite and stuff, Jesus.

He takes another sip of whatever it is Sera handed him. He hands it back down to her, effortless, blindly, knowing she will find it, sure as a blind kitten finds its mother's teat. Not that Sera is a kitten. Sera is a Disciple of her Art. He looks around the park, mindful of the Hermetic, the baby mage, the woman he is so often seen with that no one would be faulted for thinking they are attached at the hip. Mindful of the sky. "I think it's going to rain again."

And wouldn't he know. He isn't feeling the turning of the earth as it relates to the construct of time; but he can feel a change in barometric pressure better than anyone.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen smiles at nudge that is a question and a hello from Sera, but he doesn't say anything. He does reach out and trace a finger from the bridge to the tip of her nose. Playful.

And then he drops back to contemplate Hawksley and Alicia with her. Perspective plays tricks, but Kalen is less swayed by sight than less mundane perceptions. Everything is an immediate tangle of possibility. He can taste blood and peaches. Possibly also dreams.

When Alicia speaks his eyes shift to just her, and there is nothing guarded or agitated about them. The only other time she saw that was the very first time she saw him, when he was leaving her notes in the library. And even then, from the distance she kept, she may never have seen that at all. "Ah. It is. I forgot it existed. Did you want some?" He holds the cup up toward Alicia.

He nods at the statement about rain, though whether that's to indicate he heard or because he agrees is anyone's guess.

Serafíne

Sera is not a blind kitten but by god she knows where the nearest booze that she wants to drink is, so her sprawl on the goddamned ground does not last long. Playful Kalen draws a double-take first, though, and in the failing light it is difficult to trace the arc of her surprise, the lilt of her. He doesn't say anything. But she takes that as: well or better and it makes her smile, this humming backgrounded smile right at him until she is, yes, sitting up, reaching for her drink, drawing it to her mouth, leaning forward to sip.

"Fuck - " Sera, informed that it is going to rain, curses. "I can't get wet." She's looking up at Hawksley, then, smiling at him, trying to remember why -

- oh yes. "My boobs'll get electrocuted or something. You should invite us back to your place.

"Tell Collins there'll be four for dinner."

Alicia

And she is oblivious. Whatever Hawksley wants to do and does not do coasts on past her and she looks as if she could smile at this sculpted godlike wonder slapping her five like that. Tension around her mouth like she's about to smile. Friendliness isn't difficult for her and neither is enjoying herself. Troubled but the trouble leaves her be when she's around other people.

Did she want some of his beer.

"Yeah I mean if you're not drinking it..." Down goes the rest of whatever was in her cup. She doesn't have far to reach to take Kalen's cup from him. "Thanks." She puts the full cup inside the empty one and lifts the nested cups in a toast. Makes a clicking noise like the next thing she's going to do is make a finger-gun. She does not make a finger-gun. "You're not getting it back."

'Some,' her ass.

Hawksley Rothschild

That gets Hawksley's attention. He looks down at Sera, raises his eyebrows. "Well don't let that happen," he says, and then:

he should invite them back to his place. Tell Collins there'll be four for dinner.

This makes Hawksley smile. And both Kalen and Alicia see in profile what Sera sees straight on: a small smile, not a grin, fond at the corners. Intrigue lining the eyes. It grows: the smile, that is. He looks between other-Hermetic and wee-apprentice. "You both should. And stay the night."

There is a pause. He moves his hand at his side and lifts it again; he is holding a martini glass that looks like it could be made of smoke, the rim just settling into place. There is even an olive speared within it. He sips. "I have plenty of space."

Kalen Holliday

His eyes widen, just a little, when Sera tries to relocate them all to Hawksley's place. This was not where he expected tonight to go. Lying on the ground with Serafine and Hawksley, surrendering his beer to Alicia. It is not, however, the kind of night he has objections to.

And then Hawksley is saying they should stay the night. He has space. Of course he does. He has the entire fucking sky.

Spending the night in the houses of strangers or practical strangers isn't the kind of night he tends to object to either, but this invitation is not one he is as sure of. He doesn't have to see those strangers and practical strangers again, though he does on occasion. But there are complications to staying in places overnight, at least if he is sleeping. And sooner or later he won't have much choice about the sleeping tonight. Not with as much sleep as he already hasn't had.

He does not answer right away, and instead looks a question at Serafine.

Serafíne

Sera is so pleased that Hawksley has extended the invitation that she sort of drums her heels against the ground, and there is enough force in her charming little celebration that she spills a bit of her absinthe-cocktail, which slothes over the rim and reminds her that it must be drunk! so she takes another sip just beams at Hawksley and then Kalen and Alicia and forgets that she wanted to show Hawksley her light-up bra and instead is reaching out with her right hand toward Hawksley in a help-me-up gesture and enthusing to Kalen and Alicia,

"You have to come, his house is fucking huge and he has this majordomo, do you know what that fucking is? who is goddamned amazing, and there are a billion rooms and a ballroom and there are so many fireplaces and one of them has a bearskin in front of it, I swear to fucking god, and there's a s - " she was about to tell them about the secret passage, but catches herself, because a secret passage that everyone knows about is hardly a secret is it now, Sera? " - s -solar, and a conservatory - "

and she is going on and on and on, pleased, you understand, disposed to be pleased, until she catches that wordless question Kalen asks her with a glance.

And she knows: of course she does.

"You'll be fine, Kalen. Sleep all night through." Soft, that. Strange and soft and fine.

Hawksley Rothschild

Yes, Kalen. Hawksley has the sky. He is in it, he rules it,

or seems to.

There is that. But there is also the fact that his earthly palace is comfortable and well-appointed. He would notice Kalen's hesitation, but he's sipping the martini-from-nowhere and sort of watching Alicia and also sort of watching Serafine. He only notices Kalen's hesitation by proxy, when he reaches a hand to help Sera up -- he does this thoughtlessly, like he does it every day, but Sera knows he doesn't always -- and she's babbling about his house and then catching her eyes on Kalen's to tell him he'll be fine.

Hawksley glances at Kalen. He doesn't ask. He is still lightly, lightly holding Sera's fingertips. In his other hands is that ghostly martini. The glass moves; wisps of it rise. Made of smoke. He sips again.

"I don't believe Collins would describe himself that way," he mentions, either of the term 'majordomo' or 'goddamned amazing'. He doesn't deny a billion rooms, though it's untrue. He doesn't deny 'ballroom' because that would make him a liar, but he does deny this:

"I do not have a bearskin rug." He pauses, frowning. It's rather clear: he is not sure if he has a bearskin rug. Did he once? Shit.

"I can't believe you're not even mentioning the library. It's like you don't know me at all," he scoffs.

Alicia

The Orphan drinks the beer she stole from the Hermetic and it's hard to see where her eyes go with the sunglasses in the way or who she's looking at. Just because she appears to be looking straight at Hawksley when he offers to have everyone stay the night doesn't mean she's not letting her eyes bounce between Kalen and Sera.

She looks over to Kalen when Sera reassures him. Also doesn't ask. Right now she has to feel like a freshman in the presence of upperclassmen. Awkward and immature. Not as if she's cramping their style. They are wild things and free. She couldn't cramp them if she tried.

He does not have a bearskin rug.

"Deal breaker," she says and starts to wander off. Maybe she's kidding. She has to be kidding. As soon as she hears the word 'library' Alicia pauses and twirls around and marches herself back over there. "You have a library?"

Hawksley Rothschild

"Well I can always get one!" he exclaims, because -- well. Because that's true, and because she and Sera just seem so into the idea of the bearskin rug, and he's about to grouse about women and their obsession with dead animal pelts, and this could very well turn into a rant about evolutionary psychology and threats to bring them the heads of dragons or something, but

Alicia turns back, upon mention of the library.

Hawksley, sipping that strange martini, smirks, watching her. He doesn't answer, because the smirk, well. It's answer enough. Does he have a library. Scoff.

Kalen Holliday

He perhaps trusts Hawksley and he does not really trust Alicia, but those things are irrelevant because he does trust Sera. So he rises, a trick on his own, but his shoes are rather more sensible than Sera's and he has not been tasting absinthe.

His eyes track Alicia heading and drawing back at the word library. That gets a flicker of a smile.

"Okay."

Serafíne

On her feet now, grass clinging to the tangled waterfall of her hair, her spine, her leather-clad ass, her fishnets, all of it and Hawksley has her fingertips and it feels like her fingertips are flying and Kalen says okay and Sera smiles, indulgent or perhaps something else, and then she notices the martini made of smoke. Or well, notices that Hawksley's martini that materialized from nowhere was not something she just overlooked, but that the fucking bastard made a martini out of goddamned smoke.

"Oh my god - " Sera is having two or perhaps three conversations at once, "of course he has a library - did you just make that!!!!?! - it has a fucking lot of books and it is enormous and I love it and it has very sturdy chairs - "

- and if, at times, she only has eyes for someone or something right now it is Hawksley's smoke-martini. She slides her hand in his. Full contact. Folds their palms together, as if they belonged like that, while she enthuses, " - bring it closer. Let me see it."

Hawksley Rothschild

"Just make what?" he says absently, coyly, to Sera. Her hand is sliding into his and he is taking it, easily, holding her hand. He certainly does not let her get a closer look at his martini. He very nearly starts holding out of her reach, keep-away, in part because he knows if he lets her look at it she's going to want to drink it and he didn't make it for her.

So he sips. And he is looking at Alicia, he has been looking at Alicia since he first woke to sensing her, and he keeps coming back to looking at her. He doesn't even try to hide it. He doesn't apologize for it. He stares, sometimes, and at other times his regard is sidelong, but it is almost always protracted, studious, attentive.

In his eyes there is, for a moment -- and just as unhidden as anything else -- a flicker of recognition. It is not the same thing as understanding. It is the basis of it, though.

"I'll get Collins," he says, as he is finishing his martini, lowering his hand to his pocket to pull his phone out. He does not let go of Sera's hand. He does not toss the smoke-made martini glass anywhere; he just finishes the drink inside of it and then his hand is in his pocket and there's no martini glass there's just his phone, sleek and white and razor-thin. "Unless you all want to cram into the Porsche." It does have seats in the back, the 911. They aren't what you would call roomy. He looks around, cocking a brow, hand poised to send a text to summon his... driver? Majordomo? Manservant? His Collins. He is looking at Alicia again.

Alicia

It's going to rain. There are books and a lot of other words for a lot of other rooms that Alicia doesn't recognize. Kalen let her steal his beer and now he's been assured that whatever badness happens when he sleeps won't occur he's going to come along.

She has met a lot of people in Denver who suffer from nightmares. Alicia does not suffer from nightmares or if she does it isn't every night screaming and sweating and fighting off something that wins regardless of the outcome. Nightmares happen to everyone. Some of their waking moments are nightmares.

The first time they met Alicia trusted Kalen enough to grab his hand and drag him inside the coffeehouse before telling him and Lena what had happened that brought her to Denver. Then they had a misunderstanding and she told him to go fuck himself and that was the end of that. It may mean something that he almost smiles when she comes back or it may mean nothing. What she thinks of him is of no importance to him anyway.

"Uh," she says, "you have a Porsche? SHOTGUN."

Kalen Holliday

Kalen does not exactly smile when Alicia calls shotgun, but there is a little huff of breath that under some other circumstances might have been a laugh. Those circumstances mostly involve more sleep.

Then he is looking questions at Serafine again, because he will not object to being smushed into the back of the Porsche with her. Look. Who would even do that?

Serafíne

Sera is trying to get a closer look at the martini and Hawksley is playing keep-away and yet somehow they are still holding hands: her right, his left. And he has a longer reach than she, a longer fucking wingspan and he is considerably more sober in these precise few moments so: keep away. Hawksley wins, he keeps his drink entirely for himself and Sera is holding her own closer to her body and sort of resting her head against Hawksley's shoulder, watching the smoke-martini more than the people, fascinated, fascinated, and resigned that he won't let her get any closer and a bit - you know - she really wants to see it, and then he sips again and finishes it and makes it go away and reaches for his phone.

"What was that. Were you really drinking?"

--

And Alicia wants SHOTGUN and Kalen is looking questions at Serafíne and Serafíne says, " - just tell him about the company. We can cram." Or take a taxi, if cramming really doesn't work. What the fuck does Sera know about the available space or the physics of sports cars.

Hawksley Rothschild

When Alicia reacts to hearing about his porsche with calling shotgun, that's when he grins. It flashes over his face, sudden and quick, and he laughs. "Yeah," he says, still laughing. He puts his phone away, no text sent. He has a beautiful woman's head on his shoulder and he just drank a magic martini. He also has a house that Sera calls Hogwarts and within that house he has a majordomo who comes when called, he has a library, he has a pool, a sauna, a steam room, a cinema, fifteen bedrooms, a ballroom, and he has forgotten how many kitchens.

He turns his head, and kisses the top of Sera's, and starts walking. He will be followed. He knows it. "That was a discrete illusory conjuration. Something I picked up in Egypt. And as far as I can tell, I most certainly was drinking."

Sera wants him to tell Collins about the company. It doesn't occur to Hawksley to pull his phone back out -- ugh, the effort! -- and tell his manservant that he's bringing three Awakened home. If Collins can't take that in stride, after everything, he really isn't worth his paycheck.

--

In a parking lot somewhere there is a Porsche 911 anniversary edition. It is in a color known as 'anthracite brown', which the 911 anniversary edition does not come in: unless you are Hawksley, apparently. It answers the remote unlock like it is coming to life, and perhaps there is some life to it, the way its paint job looks a bit like the glistening feathers of a golden eagle, or gold scattered on earth. They climb in, cramming, cramming, stuffing Kalen and Sera in the back and perhaps Sera chooses to drape her legs over Kalen's lap or maybe she just tucks them up and Alicia called shotgun so shotgun she has. Hawksley drives.

Of course Hawksley drives. Smoothly, confidently, whipping away from downtown and the parks and out towards Cherry Hills Village. It is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the country. And Hawksley's estate lies down winding, tree-flanked paths that hide mansions, other estates, a far cry from his own -- you can shout on his property and remain unheard. And his property is... considerable. His house is significant. Stately. Old-world, with an expansive drive and hardwood and chandeliers and marble. There are multiple chimneys. There are tennis courts. There is a garden. There's -- a lot, really, and of no matter. Hawksley pulls the Porsche into a side building that serves as garage for that, for a hulking black Mercedes SUV, and for something else low and curvy and covered with canvas.

When they walk up to the front door, there is an older gentleman standing there, dressed in a smart charcoal-colored suit. He opens the door for them, watching as they enter.

"Four for dinner, Mr. Rothschild?" he asks, his tone a bit arch, and Hawksley turns, grins,

he's holding Sera's hand again.

"Yeah," says the master of the house. "Make up some rooms, too. They'll be staying."

And Collins -- for this is he, dark and stoic and calm and calming -- gives a low nod. "Of course."

--

Somewhere in there, Kalen and Sera get lost. To the kitchen, or the pool, or the gardens outside. Hawksley loses them, but not Alicia, who he is taking

to the library.

Double-you tee eff.

Elijah

[Nightmares]

Dice: 4 d10 TN7 (2, 3, 5, 6) ( fail )

Elijah

Live, live you bastard for tomorrow you die and it all begins anew.

Something to take up to every morning.

Something that stuck in his head while he was making copies and getting ready for classes and buying his textbooks as though buying something would make the walls stop rumbling. He considers seeing Eleanor to talk, to talk about anything really because her presence is calming but he determines that reliving the sensation of drowning, sinking, sundering ending (beginning) ending was too much today. There really only one thing that Elijah could think of to do to shake the impending feeling of dread that came when his dreams were too much.

Elijah Poirot was going to get himself completely trashed until he forgot the night was ever anything at all to worry about. He'd stoke his courage with coke and pepsi and rum and whatever else he could throw at his system and dance until the world stopped spinning and everything came down to a crawl. He would move and touch and taste until he was fairly certain that he could count the heartbeats of whomever he was closest to in hopes of recapturing that moment where he could feel everything breathing, beating, breaking alive because he needed alive today.

He'd had enough dying.

For now, he had to prepare. This was a ritual, and he needed more damned carbs in his system than a marathon runner because what he was about to do to himself was damnably exhausting and he needed fuel for that fire. Besides, he'd heard this place had some damn fine hot sauce, and quesadillas were looking fan-fucking-tastic. He took a cab here, would take a cab wherever it was he was going, and if he played his cards right it wouldn't be home tonight. He had a button down shirt on that was undone just enough that his collarbones were visible at the right angle. . He had pants that matched his vest and one could say he looked sharp, looked poised. He even had a damn tie on that was ever so obviously eskew. Business formal gone ever so awry.

He had a seat at the bar. It was immediate service, which was precisely what he wanted.

Sid

Elijah isn't the only one who arrives at the restaurant sans motorized vehicle. Sid's reason is less about her later plans for the evening and more about the fact she lives a mere four blocks to the south. That doesn't mean she comes with no wheels at all.

She opens the door to the establishment, dressed in new jeans, a pair of sneakers, and a gauzy navy blue blouse with sleeves rolled to her elbows. There is a messenger bag slung across her torso, and a skateboard carried beneath her right arm. Her long red hair has been plaited into a thick braid that drapes over her shoulder.

As soon as she walks in, sees a vaguely familiar figure leaned over at the bar - ah, her destination, thwarted! - her brow tightens and her mouth firms not quite into a line. Her tension comes from wariness, though not the sort some might expect.

Regardless, or perhaps deliberately in spite of that wariness, Sid weaves her way through to take up a place at the bar herself. Two seats away, of course, giving the kid his space in case...well she's not really sure what to expect from Elijah. She leans her skateboard against the wall of the bar, removes her bag to hold it more securely in place, then slides into one of the stools.

Elijah

Elijah smiles a smile at Sid that is not unlike the awkward smile of finding out your one-nighter was also your new supervisor. Awkward, yes, but mostly embarrassed. Then again, the only sleeping done on anyone's part in this equation was Elijah in Sid's truck in a completely platonic out-like-a-light fashion. Come to think of it, it hadn't been the worst sleep he's had.

So, very carefully, he scooted himself one barstool over.

"Hey, I ordered too many quesadillas," lies, he ordered as many as he had intended on ordering, "do you wanna split some with me?"

Hawksley

Hawksley comes out of the bathroom.

Hawksley is wearing a tank top that is striped thin and thick and thin and thin and thin and thick again, an ombre of yellow and green and blue. Hawksley is wearing Ray Bans with black frames, neon yellow arms. His hair is a mess. His skin is tanned to a particularly rich shade of gold. He is in knee-length tailored linen shorts that are wrinkled half to death, and he is wearing bright blue top-siders with gleaming white soles and laces. In one hand is a yellow hoodie. In his other hand is a paper towel he forgot he was holding.

For a moment he's standing there in the arch between bathrooms and restaurant, hands to each side, like he's willing the room to stop wobbling.

Then he lowers his arms, straightens his back, shakes his hair back, and struts like the room isn't fucking wobbling because his will is greater than the room, fills the room with sunlight, saturates everyone's skin with warmth and light and glowing, glowing glory. The building shakes off its moorings and lifts, slowly and then all at once, soaring into the air. Now everyone can feel a bit wobbly,

at least those who are scared of flying.

--

He has not seen Sid in the last year.

Almost to the day. Actually plus a few days. But it's been a year since the night in the park that ripped Pan to shreds and left Sera a sobbing mess, the night when he and Sid were the ones who laid down beside her and held her until it was morning, and the terrors of the night were a little easier to release back to their shadows.

And it's entirely possible that a thing or two has happened in the past year, but try telling Hawksley that. No one tells him anything because it is useless to tell him anything. Not really, but he tries to make it very clear how little he cares about anyone, anything, so no one thinks it's worth it to involve him. He's a selfish, narcissistic hedonist. Not someone you call when you're sick. Not someone you call when shit is going down. Not someone you call for anything but partying.

So this is probably why, upon seeing Sid who went to a crazy woman's house with him and knows stuff about science and shit and comforted the person who is ostensibly His Only Friend That Is Not Also On His Payroll, Hawksley thinks of nothing but to lift his Ray Bans in shock, stare at Sid, and say,

loudly:

"Oh. My. God. Becky. Look... at her butt."

Sid

Sid watches the movement from her left. Watches as it resolves into Elijah sitting a stool closer to her. Watches that with the quiet stillness of a...one wants to say deer but that doesn't quite describe it. A wild animal, though, or one that has been smacked too often for doing the wrong thing. That's how she watches Elijah as he moves closer.

A thing or two has happened in the last year. Sid didn't think to contact Hawksley about any of it. Sid doesn't think to reach out to someone unless that someone is Someone and these days there are hardly any Someones in her life. None of them are in Illegal Pete's tonight. So. Hawksley won't know about the trials or tribulations that have shaped and changed the quiet redhead, the one who tried to defend someone she considered a friend after he left the building, the one who filled Sera's bed with a warmth and vibrancy that felt like spring even before her resonance turned green and verdant.

She does not have much butt to speak of, not anymore. She is thinner than she was a year and a handful of days ago, cheeks less round, it makes the dark eyes behind her glasses seem sunken. There are splashes of freckles everywhere on her fair skin, signs that she's seen the sun but still seems shadowed.

Elijah lies about quesadillas and Sid opens her mouth, but before she can say anything someone is quoting a Sir Mix-A-Lot video. Sid wouldn't turn - she doesn't recognize the voice or realize that it's directed at her and not someone else in the restaurant - except for that feeling. That sensation of sunlight warming her already warmed skin despite being indoors and away from the sun. Twisting on her seat, Sid looks over her shoulder. There is a moment of confusion followed by recognition and a slight shifting of her mouth that hints at a smile.

"Hawksley."

Elijah

Hawksley had a feeling that was hard to ignore, followed by a presence that was incredibly fun to look at because jesus that man was made of sun kissed gloriousness. Elijah wasn't the type to be jealous, but he was the type to unabashedly give him a look (because it was hard not to look because oh my gawd) His attention was drawn between the two; Elijah did not approach any closer to Sid than their current distance. That seemed comfortable. That seemed to be about as close as he could possibly get with Sid, noting her tension. Noting her posture, not ing their history, he didn't want to press. He didn't want to invoke a retreat.

"Holy shit, Hawksley, you know everybody," he said with no small amount of surprise.

Serafíne

The doors open and Illegal Pete's doesn't have fucking chimes, thank you know, or if they do they are shaped like cacti and slightly mad and slightly absurd and someone ripped the clappers out of them because the actual bell part is fucking annoying but regardless:

- a door somewhere opens and maybe it is the door to the restroom and maybe it is a front door, maybe it is a door that you don't quite remember being there in the first place. One that leads away from something you were, toward something you may be becoming and -

Fuck it.

Sera walks in.

She is wearing these tiny little leather short-shorts and fishnets and an unbuttoned men's sportcoat with apparently nothing underneath it except for a wholly transparent black lace bra, handmade, French, these amazing fucking little scallops probably hand-stitched by the most elfin little hands in the most elegant atelier in all Paris, and despite the absolute beautiful sheerness of her underthings, some semblance of modesty is maintained because that suitjacket, more or less covers her breasts but wouldn't, you know, if she lifted her arms overhead or stretched or did anything active whatsoever.

She: walks in, and puts her arms Hawksley from behind and looks like she's about to set her teeth in his shoulder because why the fuck not when:

"Sid, fuck. Hey. Long time no see. You look - " the sunken eyes, you know? The tension; that edged glance, Sera cannot say that Sid looks Good because, well, dark circles and what-all, " - fuck, it's good to see you."

Hawksley

The redhead, to Hawksley, is just that. Not quiet nor sad, certainly not shy or retreating, and Amelia Who. He's never seen an iota of that person, even if it was the bulk of her personality at one given point or another. So he doesn't compare that one to this one, and to be honest:

he doesn't notice if she's thinner or not. He has a vague picture of her in his head from a year ago. Mostly it's red hair, warm hands. Mostly, right now, he's inhaling deeply as though he can smell resonance and noticing something else about her that has not diminished, but increased.

"Why you sly dog," he calls her, coming over and putting his hands on her shoulders, giving her a raucous shake like ARMAND YOU OLD SO-AND-SO. He is not that rough, though. He is super drunk. But cheerfully so. He smells a bit like limes and tequila. And even without the alcohol, fear of Sid being dismayed or angered by the touch does not occur to him. Fear of making her retreat would bewilder him. Fear of accidentally vomiting on her because she's so wobbly all of a sudden: that is something Hawksley attends to, and so he stops jiggling her and drops his hands.

This is after he has dropped the paper towel he forgot he was holding onto the floor. He does not drop his hoodie, but the muscles in his arms and his shoulders are pretty and nice to look at. The watch on his wrist that cost as much as some people's cars glints in the fading daylight, or is lit from within by his own never-fading light.

He notices Elijah! His sunglasses are atop his head now. He blinks. He stares. Then he's tries really hard to remember meeting Elijah. He decides to fake it, and grins. "I so do. How you been, man?" And is clapping his hand against Elijah's, pulling him in for a back-patting bro-hug.

Hawksley

And then Sera is there, glomping him from behind while he's bro-glomping Elijah, and Hawksley just grins. He chuckles and twists, wrapping one arm around Sera, patting her back. And Elijah's. Patting. Rubbing slow circles on their backs. Massaging slightly. Laughing.

Everyone is his friend right now. Tequila is his BEST friend, though.

Sid

The tension in her increases as Hawksley draws nearer. It's been over a year since she last saw him, since they laid together in Sera's bed in Sera's house, Sera sandwiched between them. Back then she thought he was warm, that he gave good goods. He is more a stranger to her now than he ever was a year ago (they'd met before, see, in some other place in some Before time). She turns on the stool to face him, so that he's not coming up behind her, all drunk and smiles and smelling of tequila. Sid leans back when his hands reach for her shoulders and she frowns. That frown deepens when he has hold of her and starts to shake her and then Sid is shifting, "Don't," there is not even a note of pleading there is simply Don't. Then she's sliding off the stool, shaking his hands from her shoulders in the process as she bends to gather up her belongings.

Rising, she lifts her bag strap up and over her head and that's when she sees a familiar figure making her way from somewhere to there, to stand behind Hawksley. Sera greets her like nothing at all lies between them and Sid looks at her, all the warmth - both perceived and magically pulsing in her skin - drains away.

"Is it," she says, adjusting the weight of her bag's strap on her shoulder. "That's a surprise." She cannot keep a cold distance from her voice, from the way she looks at the Ecstatic.

Without another word, Sid darts around Sera and Hawksley. Hefting her skateboard under her arm, she makes for the exit. She'll get her quesadillas somewhere else tonight.

Sid

[Things:

Sid is very uncomfortable about strange drunk men approaching her and trying to touch her unexpectedly. She isn't afraid of Hawksley, at least, only upset and annoyed.

And then Sera. This is a vast gulf between Sid and Sera now. There is genuine surprise that Sera thinks it's good to see her, but she also genuinely doesn't want to be around her.]

Elijah

He totally buys it, laughs because laughter comes easily and perks up because Sera is there and as it turns out? Tonight seems to be pretty fucking fantabulous, and maybe that was what he needed to remember. The living part of things, but he isn't thinking about much because he's mostly caught in mid bro-glomp and then there's an arm over his shoulders and Elijah peeeeered over at Sera, and his attention swung over- all over the place because damned if there wasn't a lot of sensory input and he couldn't wipe the damned grin off his face.

But, of course, then this happens. there is shift in the air and he is perceptive enough to notice that… something isn't right here. Sid gets up, leaves, takes her things, and Elijah can't do much of anything except sit there with a dumbfounded expression on his face. He… he doesn't have context. He doesn't understand precisely what is going on, but for once he knows that it wasn't his fault that Sid was fleeing.

"…"

At about that time, Elijah was really hoping for an inordinate number of quesadillas.

"… I have no idea what just happened."

Hawksley

Whatever it's worth, even drunk Hawksley doesn't come up behind women and grab them. He approached Sid from her side, and saw the frown but didn't process it. Then he's like HEY YOU, all happy and such. That doesn't last long. Sid shifts away and isn't just shaking him off but taking her ball and going home. And Hawksley is left at a loss. He does not end up calling her a sly dog. He still smells like limes and tequila. It still does not occur to him that Sid might be dismayed by someone she knows giving her a playful greeting, and for a moment there his brain just spins, trying to figure out what else it might be that makes her snap that Don't at him and decide to leave.

He still drops the paper towel. He still does not drop his hoodie. His muscles are, as ever, quite pleasant to look at. His wristwatch is very expensive, but it always has been, and actually appreciates value over time because it's a work of art, as long as he takes care of it.

Which, perhaps surprisingly, he does.

Hawksley forgets quickly. Sid is in some kind of funk, he decides, and there's Elijah, so he's faking it, and EVERYONE IS TOTALLY BUYING IT and this delights him. He still, when he can, glomps on to two very attractive people and rubs their backs with a bit too much familiarity.

Tequila is still his best friend. But it hasn't always been, and later? Probably won't be.

--

He is not insensate, though he is drunk. He feels it when the room gets so cold all of a sudden that his balls just about shrivel up. He notices the way that Sid looks at Sera like she's about to claw her fucking eyes out. And he is now wondering WHAT THE SHIT was in that tequila because none of this makes sense to him.

Elijah has no idea what just happened. Hawksley is watching Sid storm out for a few seconds, a stitch between his brows, then he shakes his head. "Chalk it up to redheads, man, I don't know," he says. He doesn't try to get her to stop. 'Fleeing Sid' is not an animal in his journals, which makes it all the more confusing, but the reason he doesn't bother is because he wouldn't. For just about anyone.

For literally anyone but one person, who is not here, who made him hate chasing after anyone so much that he has taught himself to forget how to do it.

Elijah

There is a glorious, relief-giving moment when Elijah's quesadillas finally get there. Not in time for anyone else to eat them, but there is enough food there for a marathon runner (or for a recently-not-a-teenager) to sate themselves on. Perhaps he went a little overboard. Perhaps it would have been a good call, but the smell of tequila and the scent of food had his stomach rumbling and something reminded Elijah that it was cheaper to pre-party here than it was to go to the club and actually get toasted.

Knowing, of course, that tequila makes his clothes come off, Elijah decided to dress in layers.

"Lady and gentleman, I am too fucking sober right now," and with that, he ordered a shot of tequila. Gotta start somewhere.

Serafíne

Sera is half-smiling and muttering, happily you understand, "God you're so drunk," to Hawksley and she wrinkles her nose and kinda waves this TWEE LITTLE WAVE to Elijah and allows herself to be twisted 'round so that Hawksley can slip an arm around her waist and settle a hand on her spine, and her head slants so that she can rest her ear against Hawksley's shoulder or maybe his chest and absorb the beating drum of his heart into her body. She inhales. Breathing like she takes pleasure from even so simple an act because she does take pleasure from so simple an act except -

- her eyes are dark, the liner perfect though the shadow is smuged a bit and she has so much breath in her lungs and she's smiling at Sid, not precisely benevolently mind and not without some degree of awareness that it has been awhile but the pleasure she voices is so genuine, written all over her face and lambent in her eyes and tangled with a different sort of awareness, a certain specificity that she also cannot help breathing in.

That first is it has Sera so goddamned startled that she hardly understands what the pain in her chest is, and so she's balanced against Hawksley, her golden head all aslant, looking not wholly unlike a golden retriever with an ear infection, an animal who has just heard one of those sounds, like a dog whistle, and she doesn't precisely understand where it is coming from, just that it is in the air all around her.

Sera's breath is coming harder than she realizes and she just stands there, breating hard, and she doesn't quite hear Elijah's comment that he doesn't know what happened and more or less ignores Hawksley's redheads, man, her brows all drawn together.

Then she is: squaring her shoulders and rising to her tiptoes to kiss Hawksley quite precisely on his temple with an admonishment to Elijah and Hawksley that sounds like "You boys have fun tonight," and disentangling herself from Hawksley in a way that naturally makes the suitjacket swing open and lo, her lovely, transparent bra beneath, the brief suggestion of yet-another-tattoo on her ribs beneath her right breast and unlikely Hawksley she is following Sid out of the goddamned diner and she's not exactly chasing Sid or even trying to stop her and you must understand that the hang-time between that

stutterstep

of reaction and the actual action is both endless and infinitessimal because she is a Disciple of Time, because she is liminal and magickal and there is that space and then there is this one.

Sid walks out of the diner. Sera walks out after her, stepping out of her heels half-way because they are ridiculous and Sid is taller and what the fuck, it feels like a night to be barefoot on warm pavement in the fading daylight.

--

Outside: "Sid. SID."

And this is either pointlessly poured into the darkness or who knows what but: whatever. Sera says it. "I don't know what the fuck that was - but if you can't stand to be around me, then I'm gonna go.

"And I think you should turn around and go back inside and try to be happy to see people who are happy to see you. Be nice. Make fucking friends. Say, I'm fucking sorry, you guys, I overreacted. Bad day. Let me buy you another fucking tequila - because these walls are bullshit. They're fucking bullshit - "

Whatever else Sera was going to say, well. She inhales that too. Swallows it back and - yeah.

She genuinely does not understand what the fuck that was, or where it came from. She really was happy to see Sid. She really was astonished, hurt, in pain in the aftermath, and she really does actually give a fuck and genuinely thinks that Sid should turn around, go be social, do something with strangers.

The brightest stars.

There is blood on her hands and soaked into the cuffs of her men's suit coat and smeared on her thighs and dripping from the tips of her blond curls, as if they had been dip-dyed, and Serafíne looks not so much like a victim of violence from a distance - more like someone coming home from a masquerade party. Up close though, no one would mistake the real thing for corn syrup.

So they stick to the shadows and the alleys. Skirt the crowds gathered around the front doors and open patios of the bars where the smokers are exiled, where people spill outside for a breath of somewhat cooler air and even the Sleepers tend to react to Sera's resonance now, subtly you understand, as if some small, small piece of their DNA had been rearranged in the space between two breaths, as if their hearts had seized, but only for a moment. The sensation - expectant, wrenching, compelling - that one is a hallway, and one door is closing behind, and another is opening ahead, and anything, anything, is possible.

Brighter tonight, the glistening remnants of her Work lambent in the air around her. Even Sera feels it, and it makes her feel - somehow all at once, intense, hungry, and lighter-than-air the farther they walk. Every corner is a new, strange threshold. The world is dark, every half-lit window beneath which they pass is a mystery. She is seventeen places at once, her mouth full of blood, her body wretched and whole, tired and a little bit drunk, wanting more and understanding too that maybe that is not the world's best idea.

When they get to Elijah's place Sera takes off the altered suitcoat and digs all manner of things out of the pockets: a clutch the size of her palm containing her cash for the night, three cigarettes, lipstick, three condoms, two hits of acid, one lighter and a very well-rolled joint. Her phone, from the other pocket, which she hands off to Elijah as she heads toward the bathroom. Tells him to call Dan and tell Dan to stop drinking and come pick her up in about thirty minutes or so. Then she disappears into the bathroom though about thirty seconds later she pops her head out, asks Elijah if he has a t-shirt or some fucking thing she can borrow.

The dress and the jacket might be salvageable, but just now they are stiff with dried blood, wrapped up in that particular, peculiar scent of which Serafíne has had a lifetime's fill. Whatever little buzz she had going is -

- well, cooled, or maybe warmed by the beating rhythm of the shower, by fucking familiar ritual of trying to sort through a near-strangers toiletries. Flattened out, perhaps. Worn smooth.

Sera takes a long-ass time in the shower if the hot water does not run out, and emerges looking like a strange amalgam of street urchin and can-can girl. She has salvaged her fishnets and scrubbed the stranger's blood from every inch of her skin, washed it the fuck out of her hair and fingercombed the wild tangle of her golden locks into something that approaches order, but the heels are a loss, right? Her feet were soaked in blood when she stepped back into them and now they are sticky and wreched, and the heels and the dress and the jacket are all stuffed into a plastic bag from Target and all she's wearing is a borrowed t-shirt, dark lingerie beneath it visible like a shadow when she's close to the light.

The t-shirt's longer than her fucking dress though, so ironically the clothes to modesty ratio is working in reverse tonight, and when she settles on Elijah's couch she pulls the t-shirt over her knees, all curled up, waiting for Dan to arrive.

If Elijah offers her a beer she sure as fuck takes one. If he offers her a whiskey she wants a double. But beneath that visceral immediacy - well, she's tired. Worn in a way that Elijah, at least, has not seen her before and there's nothing particularly troubling about it and except for the odd quiet moment here and there - for which the younger mage has no genuine context - she feels really quite strange and quite solid and quiet and quietly sure.

And Elijah wanted to know how she did that, so, chin on her knee, looking really rather small and a little bit damp and ridiculously fucking hot in his t-shirt and her fishnets-and-garters and not at all like she has the power to heal someone from the edge of death to more-or-less like new in her blood and in her lungs, in her hands and in her will, Sera explains to Elijah that she has: just that. How she does it. How she feels the world around her, sometimes blindly, sometimes acutely, how it all moves in her skin. How she uses the physical to focus the metaphysical, the pieces she pulled together, patterns and Patterns, to make him whole.

She'll show him later, if he wants to see. Maybe she'll try to teach him, but fuck, she tells him, she's pretty sure she'd be the world's worst fucking teacher.

--

Of course Dan shows up. It's not even midnight. He's a bit later than he meant to be but he had to take a cab home because he had planned to drink tonight and then pick up the Jeep and Sera wonders if he can get the blood out of her jacket, she likes that jacket, and Dan just wants to make sure they're okay, and Sera's all, We're fine. We're fine. It's all someone else's, she just doesn't wanna go out anymore. She wants to go home. She wants to be with him, she wants to get high.

She tells Elijah that he should come with and Dan echoes her so maybe Elijah does. It's just that Sera thinks that that was all freaky enough that Elijah shouldn't be alone tonight. Something about being alone in a boxy little apartment with the promise of one's nightmares to come after an almost-nightmare sounds just wrong.

--

So they go home. Sera tells Dan quietly what happened in the car, and he wonders if she wants to go see Pan, and maybe she does, so maybe Elijah gets introduced, or maybe the priest is off at something official: some wake, some wedding anniversary, some birth, some death.

But they go home. Sera doesn't want to go out again. She texts Hawksley (nothing urgent, just: I wanna see you. Come over tonight?) while Dan makes drinks and then Sera cleans the pollen off her favorite bong and settles on the cabana bed in her back yard to get high and watch the brightest starts come out. One by one by one.

Magic.

Serafíne

It hasn't been long since they walked out of the bar. They can't see the doors from the goddamned alleyway that stinks of piss and something slow-rotting and blood now, assuredly blood, the sharp stink of the victim's fear as he lay dying on the pavement.

Sera has blood on her. On her hands and on her thighs and smeared on her dress though the dress is black so the blood is less visible. She lets go of Elijah's hand and expels a long, slow breath.

"I've gotta get out of here - " she says, beneath her breath, reaching for the phone in the pocket of her suit jacket. " - fuck. You okay?"

Elijah

He's taking off his vest, pocket watch still in hand and he hands it over to Sera like having the fabric might help her clean herself up, but there was blood everywhere and this was going to look really, really bad and someone was going to notice someone who was that kind of gorgeous in that state of disarray.

Elijah took a kick look round to see if they could get to the parking lot without anyone thinking anything weird.

"I… how the fucking Hell did you do that?" he was in awe, but now was not the time. Elijah shook his head quickly, "We… uh… we can't stay here, is your place close to here? Mine's not far."

Serafíne

Elijah hands over his vest and there is Serafíne, barefooted on the filthy asphalt, and he's handing it over so she takes it because there is a kind of rhythm to almost any human interaction. When someone offers you something, you accept it.

Her hand is shaking just a bit, from the excess adrenaline or -

Well, shaking just a bit and she balls the vest up and she doesn't know why he has handed it to her, doesn't understand that he intends for her to maybe try to clean herself up with the slick, glossy back, the tailored suiting on the front and it seems so absurd, in the wake of all of that, to have a vest in hand.

So she breathes out something like-a-laugh and gives him this quick, taut, close-mouthed little smile and looks down at her hands, his crumpled vest, and then up, a swinging glance up and down the alley.

"Magic." Is Sera's only reply in that moment. Magic, magic. He can feel it still, the sensation of her resonance so heady that it almost feels as if they are drowning in it. "And I took a cab, no idea how long it would take to walk. I was gonna have Dan come pick us, but if your place is close, he could get me there."

Elijah

"that works," he says.

He looks still, his breathing shallow and his hands weren't shaking but he had to remind himself at that juncture that he needed to breathe and that they needed to get somewhere and that this was going to be awkward. Elijah needed something to do with himself, so he looked for her shoes. Because they were fantastic shoes.

"I… I wanna learn how to do that, you saved that guy."

HIs mind was blown.

Serafíne

Elijah finds Sera's heels near the mouth of the alley just where she abandoned them. One is on its side The other is standing upright, just as it was when Serafíne stepped out of it. Sera is still (absurdly) holding on to Elijah's crumpled vest, though she has carefully tip-toed out of the dark, slick pools of blood and is looking up, up, up, past the dark frame of the buildings flanking the alley, up toward the still-dark sky.

And she is still like that when Elijah returns with the shoes.

Her sharp profile in swimming silhouette against the dark smear of the alley, the dull and acid glow of the dim bulbs hanging over the back entrances to the street's storefronts obscured here and there by the hulking shadows of oversized dumpsters.

When he comes back, she takes the heels from him. Tucks her fingers into the leather and takes the heels and hands Elijah back his vest reaches out to brace herself against his shoulder as she lifts first her right foot, then her left, to slide her shoes back on.

"I told you," Sera says then, breathing out quietly. " - magic. It's just - it's hard to fucking explain. It's just something you do, you know. You start by listening to heartbeats. Feeling for living things, you know. The quick in them - their patterns all charged with - fuck.

"It's hard to explain. Now c'mon. Lead the way."

Ravenous.

And lo, there was a scene!

1: This scene is going to involve violence, which I'm sure you're both prepared for. Nonetheless, if either of you get uncomfortable or upset by anything, do please let me know.

Hunger

Hill-top tavern was one of the more popular dive bars in Denver, its primary claim to fame being that it was a favorite hang-out of a certain famous actor and comedian. The bar itself stretched from wall to wall, and even early on a Friday evening it was already close to packed with a wide variety of locals, from hipster college students to grizzled bar veterans. The smell of hops and sweat permeated the air, and pitchers of beer flowed freely. Someone was playing a David Bowie song on the jukebox, and the sounds filtered through the noise of the exuberant drinkers.

Serafíne

Sera looks like she belongs here but she looks like she belongs everywhere. Friday night at the Hilltop, Sunday afternoon at Versailles. So the bar is packed and there's noise everywhere, people thronging, drinking, Bowie on the jukebox and someone slinging retro cocktails at the bar. Maybe it's retro cocktail night. Maybe that's why Sera has paired tonight the world's shortest cocktail dress with beneath a too-large men's suit-jacket that has been patched with pieces from her favorite Public Image Limited t-shirt (Johnny Rotten's fucking face and all that jazz) after it disintegrated for reasons about which she is still unclear. One sleeve is pushed up her arm and only stays up because of the wealth of bracelets she is wearing. Seen from behind (as now - she is leaning in at the bar, flirting with the bartender and laughing at some goddamned joke a stranger is telling her, badly) she looks as if she is wearing nothing but fishnets beneath that patched up retro sportcoat.

Her heels are ... remarkable, but they almost always are.

She's starting the night off with shots and seems to have ordered buttery nipples for half the people at the bar from the way the 'tender is lining them up.

Elijah

Monsieur Poirot was not a grizzled bar veteran. No, no he was more like one of those college hipster kids and finding himself lacking in partner to go out with that night, Elijah decided to hit up a local dive bar in the hopes of sight seeing and imbibing the local culture. Preferably of a high proof and of a suitable flavor. Like he really cared much about the flavor, so long as it was deliciousness. His attire was comfortable. Jeans, a shirt that buttoned down half way and hung close to his frame, and a vest. A vest because he had to find some place to put his pocket watch. He had on a couple bracelets, and a necklace that had tucked into his shirt when he moved wrong. Something small whose knot he couldn't quite untie since Jenn "I was a girl scout forever" Laurent had tied it on for him.

Elijah was a year shy of being able legally pour back shot after shot, but that was unimportant. The beauty of dive bars were that the people at these types of establishments didn't care if his ID was fake, so long as his money was real. And it was. His money spent gorgeously at this particular establishment and it was generally a great time to be had. He followed the line of buttery nipples to -

"Sera!"

- she's hard to miss.

Sera was hard to miss, and Elijah noticed her as soon as he arrived. The bartender was lining up shots of buttery nipples and so far everyone seemed to be having a brilliant time. A few seats down from where Sera leaned into the bar, a group of UCD athletes (probably football players, from the looks of them) were laughing at some ridiculous story that one of them was telling about this time he got chased through the snow, drunk and naked, by his ex-girlfriend. One of the jocks, a tall blond who sported a striped tank-top and jeans and reasonably impressive biceps, left the group to go grab his wallet out of the car. From the looks of him, flushed and shiny-eyed and a little less than graceful, he hadn't wasted any time getting a few drinks into his system.

But it wasn't the jock who she and Elijah felt when a faint ghost of resonance echoed at the edge of their senses. It wasn't even anyone actually in the bar. But it was there, hovering just out of reach - beyond the much sharper and stronger sensation of Sera's own visceral resonance and Elijah's chaotic tumult.

There was something out there in the alley beside the bar. Something that felt ravenous. They noticed it right about the time the jock walked outside, like a scent brought in on the air.

Hunger

[Edit: It wasn't the jock who Sera and Elijah felt]

Serafíne

Serafíne has been in Denver a long fucking time. She knows people. She knows people who know people and more importantly, people know her, have seen her somewhere, maybe at a show, maybe a party, maybe at an opening, maybe at a happening, maybe with a goddamned priest or maybe naked, who can say? Elijah is not the first person to call her name tonight and her senses - preternatural - are not as sharp as they often are but she still knows him from behind and blindfolded (she is not blindfolded, just tossing back a shot, oh! which she slams down, laughing, calling for "Another!" before she has paid for the first) and Sera turns around, laughing, opens her arms for Elijah because Why Not? and then he sees that she is indeed wearing beneath the men's suit jacket (suitably altered and plastered with Johnny Rotten's fucking face along the back) the world's shortest and tightest cocktail dress.

Her hair is a loose whirl of blond curls, except for the dark fuzz of her undercut, which is freshly shorn, though she has a chain of some sort threaded through the curls like a punk princess's version of a tiara, and an armful of bracelets on her left arm, and when she flings open her arms for a hug Elijah might note the rather scandalous cut-outs framing the flanks of the dress.

Tumult. She buries herself in it, and she is all around him, gut-wrenching and compelling and also, somehow, tip-of-the-tongue, not-yet but-becoming, all the things that she is. Forehead against his shoulder, braced, inhaling him when she feels something else in the back of her throat.

Something else,

something new that makes her inhale, sharp.

--

That makes her remember:

hunger.

--

Nudgenudge, her hands tighten on the silk facing of Elijah's vest.

"Feel that?" she murmurs, glancing a little bit (not much: thank you, high heels!) up at him. Seeking confirmation. She's not hallucinating, right? A glance at the door; enough to catch the jock's frame as he leaves.

Elijah

She's a full body experience, something visceral and gripping and lovely wonderful and Elijah adores every second of the hug and the familiarity in contact. She is a sensory experience, the press of fabric, the hints that there are, in fact, clothes underneath that suit jacket and damned if it wasn't a treat to see. He's in a moment when he feels it.

Feels it in his stomach, in his ribs, that coming ache that lives there.

What was Elijah going to do with himself?

He knew better than to walk outside when something let sharp and positively ravenous on his skin- something that devoured and clawed and left a person feeling hollow if there was anything beyond hunger. This was not simple hunger, and something about it made his blood run to cliches and left Elijah Poirot, slender of build and lacking in any kind of physical prowess, wondering what would become of that man who just walked out the door.

No, no he couldn't just let something happen. Not when that feeling was out there, not when the young man was blissfully unaware of that seething, all abiding hunger that gnawed and would pick his bones clean. No, no Elijah couldn't abide by that, and even if all he could do was bear witness, he would.

She straightens his vest, murmurs something that requires his attention and at first all he does is nod. Realizing, of course, that this isn't a verbal affirmative and that he had more to say, the young man clarifies, "I don't think that guy should be out there with it."

Serafíne

(BRB)

Hunger

Feel that?

Yeah, they felt it. And that kind of hunger brought to mind all kinds of terrible nightmares. Creatures lurking in the dark, waiting to pounce. Waiting to devour.

Sera and Elijah were not hunters. But they didn't know yet what was out there. Perhaps it was even one of their own. Perhaps the ravenous thing would let the college kid walk by without event.

Perhaps not.

Either way, Elijah wasn't comfortable leaving him out there.

And Sera? The lingering aftertaste of butterscotch and Irish cream on her tongue gave way to something else. Something thick and coppery. Blood. Her mouth was full of it.

No. There was nothing there. But the taste...

The crowds in the bar were loud. Happy for the chance to cut loose after a long week. There was music and laughter and outside there was silence and hunger.

Serafíne

"Don't be foolish," Sera is saying to Elijah. Is starting to say to Elijah. Don't be foolish. Don't think you have to be a hero. Don't assume that feeling is anything except another one of them. And even if it isn't - what the fuck do you think you are equipped to do about it, darling boy?

And her quick little mouth is starting to skim into a half-smile that could swing indulgent or loving in turn and she's pulling back from him, her expression hard to register in his peripheral vision, more felt than seen, lifting her chin to glance over his shoulder at the room, all bright and loud and lovely in that way that Sera is ever-so-willing to allow to wash over her and into her and through her. It feels so lovely in here. The crowd-sounds like the ocean, something about currents and tides in the way strangers move, and groups shift, and patrons edge through, from one end to the other, holding drinks up above the level of other peoples' elbows and forearms until they are past the worst of the crush.

Then her voice catches.

Then her shoulders hitch and the change in her is immediate and remarkable because she is both pulling away and somehow still holding on to the sides of Elijah's vest, white-knuckled, looking more than a little bit nauseated.

"Shit." Sera says low, strained. This suggestion of a sob subsumed in her voice. "Goddamnit."

And she rises to her fucking tiptoes and pulls back and kisses Elijah, full on the mouth - visceral, hungry, raw.

Sera does not pull back until she is panting.

--

"You should stay here. Or at least, stay the fuck behind me."

Sera pulls away from Elijah then. Lets him go. Steps around him and cuts her way through the crowd, heading out of the bar.

It's an apprentice's lot to not know what is going on. Don't be foolish, and it seems that is his default, but for what it was worth, he looks at Serafíne like he was going to listen to her, or at least consider listening to her (no, no he probably would listen to her, but there was the chance of Something out there) But she exclaims shit, like it's an inevitability, like it strains on her senses.

Elijah cocks his head to the side, confusion written plain and clear across his features. Soon enough she's kissing him, visceral and raw like it's a force of nature and he isn't yielding but rather vital. Rather, he tastes like chaos and the unrest of men's hearts before revolution. And, for once, he's in a bar and his lips don't taste like tequila.

It's in these moments that he registers the nausea before, the white knuckled grip on his vest, the tension in her body that was more than standard tension and-

Goddamnit, he remembers.

Elijah follows along behind Sera, taking her order to at least stay behind her. He has no idea what is going on; it's an apprentice's lot.

Hunger

What's out there? Two people, around the corner of the building. Out of sight of the door when Sera opens it. She won't see them, but she'll feel them. One is the college kid, and Sera will sense immediately that something is wrong with his pattern. Lacerating wounds to his chest and lungs (the attack happened that fast.) He's alive, but without medical attention, probably not for much longer. His mind is awake though. Drunk and confused and terrified. Maybe he screamed and no one heard. Maybe the puncture wounds in his lungs kept him from making any sound.

The other person is another man about his age. Smaller. Light and agile and healthy. It's his body that resonates with that ravenous energy: infused with supernatural strength and vigor. But this strength is an addiction (a need, a hunger.) And he needs more. More. More.

He is so. Fucking. Hungry.

Hunger

When Sera opened the door, there was nothing remarkable there to greet them. Only the road, and the traffic, and the dusky-hued sky. The sun was going down, but it was not yet night. Surely no one would be stupid enough to make an attack in a public place while the light was still visible?

Sera knew better though. She knew that someone had.

The blond jock was nowhere to be seen. Maybe he was in the parking lot.

Briefly, the flow of traffic slowed, and the air grew quiet. And then they heard sounds. Motion. A struggle. Someone moving against the ground. And then this horrible gurgling, choking groan.

Serafíne

They have to slip through the bar, find fissues and cracks through which to move and while they do so Sera senses something out there and Elijah - behind her - well he can read the tension in her body if he wishes to read it there, and also the kind-of-abandon about her, the way she gives herself over to the sensing-of-things, the way she leaves her goddamned body to do any of this at all. And she reaches back at some point to grasp his hand, see, just before she opens the door, and he can feel something vibrating and vibrant about her and she's humming beneath her breath and finding her way through the interstitial pieces of the interstitial moments, the blood still staining the back of her throat and a bright wound of panic in her gut and her mouth is open and a little bit slack and Elijah can maybe make out a handful of the lyrics she uses to wind her magic around her, to open up her both: her own boundaries and the edges of someone else's mind.

(and there in the square he lay alone / without face without crown // out of the air / out of nowhere) are the snippets of the son he overhears, a thread of Mark Kozelak's song Duk Koo Kim, if he knows it, and near-nonsense if he does not.

Sera does not have time to tell Elijah not to be rash, and not to rush as she starts to lead him cautiously toward the dying jock and the ravenous man.

She has to sing beneath her breath. She has to transcend her body. She has to focus.

(Mind 3: Targeting Mr. Ravenous. She is going to suffuse him with a feeling of satiation. He has all he needs / all he could want. He has never been so full.)

Elijah

Elijah Poirot has always been on who flirted with death. Their relationship was casual, like that girl you text every Friday and she texts you every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday because her attentions would not be rebuked so readily. He was accustomed to hearing the dead, familiar with the concepts behind grief and learning to let go and move on, but for all of that he'd never seen someone die before. He'd never heard the sounds of what he was fairly certain was someone choking on their own blood-

His mind went to worst case scenarios, and his approach to the alleyway was a little less than the cautious his brain told him that he needed to be. This was not staying behind Sera. No, it was more like being a couple squares adjacent to her. He inhaled deep, hoping to find something sentient there. Something thinking and reasoning and not something that was going to mindlessly devour him the minute he got too close to the alleyway.

They rounded the corner of the building and stood gazing into the slim alley between the bar and the hardware store next door. There was a rusted trash bin against one of the walls, and lying on the ground beside it was the blond man from the bar, his shirt torn and stained with blood from multiple knife wounds he'd taken to the chest. One of his arms pushed against the ground, trying to scoot away from his attacker while he pressed a hand tightly to the side of his neck. There was another fresh wound there: a bite mark, and blood flowed freely between his fingers, falling in thick drops onto the pavement.

His attacker crouched over him, oddly still in the wake of Sera's effect. He couldn't have been older than 21, with wild curly hair and bright blue eyes. He was probably half the size of the man he'd just attacked. It shouldn't have been that easy. But he had the bloody knife in his hand, and a crimson smear of blood painted his mouth and chin.

He'd just ripped a chunk of flesh from the side of the athlete's neck. And eaten it.

When the attacker saw Sera and Elijah, he looked up in dazed confusion, as though he hadn't heard them approach. And he glanced between the dying man on the ground and the mages and... uttered this quick, hysterical laugh. He rose to his feet and brushed the side of his hand over his mouth, smearing blood down the side of his wrist. He looked like something out of a horror movie.

He wasn't hungry anymore. But there was a fucking knife in his hand and Sera knew that he was stronger than he looked and maybe it was two against one but fuck if this kid wasn't likely to go for it anyway. You could see it in his eyes, like a predator pondering the urge to attack. But predators seldom attacked when they weren't hungry.

He smiled, and blood dripped from his teeth.

Then he ran.

Serafíne

Once again Serafíne makes a noise beneath her breath. This time there is something urgent to it, and something wounded, and something beating-bright. In the alley, her dark blue eyes are even darker, more shadow than like, and she is still trying to fucking sing as the attacker sits up from - yes - tearing a chunk of flesh out of a stranger's neck.

Oh, Christ, that noise is more than beneath-her-breath. The attacker runs. Sera lets him go and somewhere in the middle of all this she has stepped out of her ridiculous heels and is automatically substantially shorter and she is now near-barefoot on the cooling pavement and she runs, you see - she runs not after the attacker but toward the victim, nearly bites it when her feet slide in a slick pool of blood -

- and then Sera is straddling the jock, which is perhaps not precisely First Aid protocol, sinking to her knees over his chest, leaning forward with her hair all atumble around him, generous, generous, cradling his head in her hands, bending forward as if she were a supplicant at prayer, brow to brow, nose to nose, mouth to mouth.

"Shh," she's murmuring, heedless of the blood that is being smeared all over her. " - shhhh. Shhhhh. Shhhh. It's not as bad as it looks." Her fingers thread through his head, her thumbs are cool on his temple, she is all concern, urgent, undulent, shaking. "You're going to be fine."

And she kisses him,

muttering against his mouth. "You're going to be just fine."

Elijah

He touched something, reached out and felt something in the other person's mind and found himself faced with a strange sensation, a strange understanding that Elijah couldn't quite put a finger on. Something that wasn't quite human, something that he knew wasn't real and while Elijah felt he should follow, there was a man who was dying in front of him and he didn't know what to do, he didn't know to hold his hand or call an ambulance or-or-

Sera knew what to do. Sera, who was in the world's tiniest dress and who was so goddamned real, who was in the moment and shaking and-

It hit him that something was going on. It hit him that he needed to be sure she was okay, needed to be certain that Sera was going to pull away from all of this because something told him she was pushing herself hard and fast like she needed to transcend but what happened to her body when she came back to it? What happened to the rest of her?

Hunger

Matty Spencer wasn't the kind of guy who'd ever put much stock in religion. He'd been in church a total of maybe five times in his life, most of which had been weddings or funerals, and although he wasn't a hard-line atheist, he was fairly sure that God was just a story made up by people who wanted to explain things they couldn't understand. And if you'd told him this morning that he was going to experience an actual fucking miracle, he would have laughed and rolled his eyes.

He wasn't a dumb kid, Matty. He didn't always act like it, but there was more going on in his head than sex and football.

But then he got a little drunk on the wrong night in the wrong fucking place and something terrible happened to him. And then something amazing. And it was all way too fucking much for him to process. His attacker was gone, but then there was Sera straddling him, and in any other set of circumstances he would have been thrilled. But he was dying. Blood was pouring from his neck and he couldn't breath and the world was blurry and unfocused. And then there was this woman... this beautiful punk angel looking down at him and threading her hands into his hair and pressing her face to his. And Matty shook with confused terror because he knew that he was going to die.

But then something impossible happened. Sera's Will flowed over him, and his wounds stopped hurting. And the flow of blood slowed, and then stopped. And then the torn flesh in his chest and his neck began to close, knitting itself back together again.

And he didn't feel drunk anymore. He felt crystal fucking lucid.

Matty blinked, and stared up at Sera, and then he sat up and looked down at his chest, feeling the places where his wounds had been. Where now there was just smooth and healthy muscle. He could breath again. He could talk. And he sucked in breath like breathing was the most incredible thing he'd ever done.

"Oh fuck..." he said, both terrified and amazed.

And in that moment, Matty Spencer began to question everything he'd ever believed about anything.

Serafíne

There is blood on Sera's hands and blood in the back of her throat and blood has painted the errant pieces of her hair as they spiraled down around Matty Spencer while she kisses him and she's inhaling for another kiss when she feels him breathe, not the sick, wet smear of a wounded, clotted, choking breath, but a real one. So she inhales and sits back on her haunches which also means that she sits back on Matty Spencer's torso, breathing hard, panting as he wakes up.

Elijah is watching her: concerned that she's not okay, that something else is going on here, that she is perhaps spending too much of herself and the latter may be true but the universe does not punch her in between the eyes (this time) and the blood - everywhere - does not disturb her as much as the brief momentary hallucination of the vision Elijah does not know she had, back in the bar.

She's okay, yes. There are layers, of course, a kind of exigent physical panic, fear, which is wrapped around the elation that comes from exerting her will on the world.

"This fucker attacked you," Sera is telling Matty, smiling, tears in her eyes. She holds up a hand expecting Elijah to help her stand. "Threw you down on the ground and you slammed your head against the asphalt, but I knew you were okay. Bet you most of the blood is that weird dude's. I don't think it's even worth going to the police - "

Elijah

She's okay.

The guy's okay, Sera's okay. They're both okay and everything can be considered right with the world, for the most part.

He offers Sera a hand, and while it does not have the perfect timing and positioning that Dan has cultivated over time, it does have the presence of being well enough timed that he knows when to offer and how to offer. No right and proper southern boy doesn't know when to offer his hand to a blood soaked lady.

"Fuckin' bath salts, man… don't stress, you'll probably have worse hangovers than this."[manip+sub, because that seems like a good call]

Hunger

Maybe it really had been some kind of drunken hallucination. But Matty hadn't been that drunk. He'd felt the knife. Felt the kid bite his neck. He was sure of it.

...Wasn't he?

Maybe he'd hit his head and dreamed it. People didn't just heal. Miracles didn't happen.

Matty looked between Sera and Elijah. Briefly, he reached up to touch the place where Sera's lips had pressed against his. He could still taste the butterscotch from her breath.

"Thanks for chasing him off. Wonder what the fuck he wanted?"

(He'd wanted to eat you, Matty.)

Gradually, Matty got to his feet. When he reached back to feel for his cell phone and his keys, he found them still present in his back pocket. There was an awkward moment when his gaze lingered on Sera. Something a little more than gratitude. Attraction and awe and wonder and a little fear. He was confused. But he didn't look like he was going to rush inside and tell everyone what happened.

"I think I'm gonna walk home. Thank you. Again."

Serafíne

Sera might've gone home with Matty if Elijah weren't around. If she hadn't just chased off a madman with - or under the influence of some sort of magic, which felt dark, consuming, hungry, angry, in a way she had not felt for -

- well, for quite some time. That awkward moment might not've been quite so awkward if she'd returned the glance with a direct one of her own and invited herself home and taken his hand to walk right alongside Matty - but she doesn't and it is and she is glancing away when he looks at her, into the darkness down the alley, and then she looks back to him and wants to kiss him, on the mouth again, to steal away the hint of fear and replace it with something else.

But this isn't that moment and Sera is not going home with him and she gives Matty a little wave and a sayonara and waits and waits and waits until he's gone and out of earshot, then looks back to Elijah.

Holds out her hand.

"I'm gonna see if I can look back, glean what I can glean. You wanna give me a hand?"

Elijah

t wasn't awkward, but he was still standing there reeling, trying to process what he just saw and how it was even possible until Elijah finally settles on Well, duh, magic. Because magic made things possible, magic literally saved that man from the edge of death. It calmed a force that was ravenous, savage hunger that was hard to put a finger on. It soothed a predator, even if Elijah didn't know where that predator had fled to or if he would see them again.

He takes Sera's hand, and the other hand carefully went for his pocket watch. It was grasped with the sort of delicate care he'd afforded so few things in life that were not fleeting. Elijah inhaled like he was going to dive in, and his mind jumped.

Hunger

Sera and Elijah joined hands, and though Elijah didn't yet possess the skills that Sera had, he still had some talents to offer. And so the two of them looked back together, searching through time for the moment when that ravenous boy showed up at the bar.

The sky was a little brighter then. The traffic heavier. But it wasn't much earlier - only a few minutes before Elijah arrived to join Sera at the bar. The boy crept up like some kind of animal, slinking in through the back of the alley. He had a hooded sweatshirt on, and the hood was pulled up over his head, partially obscuring his face. His thoughts were a roiling mess of hunger and anticipation, excitement and aggression. And yes, fear. But mostly that ravenous need. The force of it was so strong it nearly washed out everything else in his head. But Sera and Elijah would get a sense that he was looking for something in particular. Not just any random person. Someone healthy. Someone strong.

He was alone. There was no-one there with him. Whoever he was, he seemed to be acting on his own, though that did not mean that there weren't others out there like him. Something about the interplay of guilt and taboo pleasure in his thoughts might seem to suggest that he wasn't supposed to be doing what he was doing. That he did not have permission.

And then he saw Matty. And his thoughts jumped with delight. And he was so hungry. He snuck back and pressed himself against the wall, and the moment Matty rounded the corner, the kid jumped out and stabbed him three times in the chest. He was very fast, and the knife went very deep, and poor Matty didn't even have time to register what was happening before he was on the ground bleeding out.

Sera and Elijah knew the rest, but it was still hard to watch. They felt a surge of ravenous need, and then the kid jumped atop Matty and ripped a chunk of flesh out of Matty's neck with his teeth. It was the best tasting thing he could imagine.

The vision faded, and they were once more looking at a vacant alley with Matty's blood stains drying on the pavement. Matty was gone. The kid was gone.

It was entirely probable that none of this was actually over. But for now, there wasn't much else they could do.
