In passing.

Ian

It was after sundown, but not yet late enough that Washington Park had cleared of visitors. Joggers ran in staggered numbers down the winding trails. A group of teenagers occupied one of the fields for a game of soccer, shouting rambunctiously over muted din of passing cars. A few couples were playing doubles in the tennis court.

Ian wasn't running tonight, as he often did. Instead he occupied a patch of ground beneath a couple of tall, overhanging trees. The grass beneath his feet was cold and brittle from winter, but the unseasonably warm temperatures had melted the last snowfall. It'd been like that for months, snowing and melting in sporadic bursts.

He was rehearsing something. Or at least, it looked it. Testing out how certain moves flowed and letting them settle into his muscle memory. Dancing alone in the park at night without music. Stopping and starting periodically with slow, measured movements. His expression was focused and withdrawn. With the temperature in the 40's, he had on only a sleek black windbreaker over his athletic clothes (the lower half of which consisted of running shoes and a pair of 3/4 length sweats with cargo pockets.)

Grace

The park holds a special place in Grace's heart. She knows she's not alone in coming to see the lake, just for the prospect of getting to talk to The Message again. But today has her wondering why...

Why did she decide to step out of the nice warm Inside and go to the Big Room? It's a refrigerator in here. Colder than a refrigerator, even. At least she had the presence of mind to bundle up in her coat, gloves, and that scarf Kalen bought her for Christmas. His gifts are practically the only vehicle through which Grace manages to show a sense of fashion. Underneath all that, she's got jeans and old sneakers on. It's a strange mix of upscale cashmere, wool, and grubby. Whatever, eh? It's not like she cares.

There's a trail of crushed crunchy grass behind her that meanders, because this free spirit does not enjoy being constrained by sidewalks. And then, she sees Ian. It's hard to mistake him, even at a distance. Few other people in the city are such graceful dancers. The meandering stops, and instead, she shuffles over to him in a straight line, hands in her pockets to keep warm.

Arionna de la Babin

Arionna was not jogging. She was not playing soccer. She was not dancing or engaging in any form of physical activity. Instead she does what she often does, and she simply walks. Spring is coming, a season her mother would rejoice in, being her own embodiment of it. Odd how Ari took to winter; the season of death and slumber. With the last throes of winter so near, it seemed only right that she should walk and enjoy what little remained.

The moon would be peeking over soon, and she would feel the pull of it. But for now... she only walked.

The others slid into her perception soon enough, though the true intensity of it was deeply muted compared to their previous encounters. It might be her own ties with the moon, or perhaps...she was merely preoccupied in her thoughts. The cup of coffee in her hand expelled steam through the small hole, and Arionna took a moment to sip from it. Did she dare it? T hat was often the million dollar question. Was it worth it?

Ultimately, she decided on a small, and almost insignificant 'yes.' Her steps deviated, moving slowly towards the sensation.

Ian

[oh look, resonance]

Dice: 6 d10 TN6 (3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 8) ( success x 4 )

Ian

Temperature could be such a subjective thing. For someone from a warm climate, 40-odd degrees might seem like scarf weather. For someone used to the cold, it felt like spring.

He didn't look up at first when he felt Grace drawing near, keeping his focus on what he was doing. His awareness of her was an instinctive thing - the way he was aware of the trees and the wind. He heard the shuffle of her feet behind him. Felt her resonance shift and soar. She was something familiar. He never seemed to mind when she watched him.

Arionna was... less familiar. But her approach was slow and distant. Ian waited until she was within easy earshot before he stopped dancing and turned to regard first Grace and then her. Grace got a small, knowing smile. (It always seemed like he was keeping some kind of secret.)

"What, no basketball tonight?"

Grace

[Magedar!]

Dice: 5 d10 TN6 (2, 7, 8, 10, 10) ( success x 4 )

Grace

"I don't basketball," Grace says, in a complete lie. "I just sometimes crash other people's games when they beg me to. You must have me confused with someone who owns..." balls? No. That would be bad. Don't say that. "Sporting equipment."

She skips up, breathing in the cold. And she is cold, this southern desert creature. Phoenix is not known for its freezing temperatures, after all. She almost doesn't tie it to Arionna, but then... oh yes. Her.

Oh well. You shouldn't let people get to you, any more than you should the cold. Arionna is her Arionna's problem to deal with, as we all are. Still, one of Grace's hands pokes out of her coat, gives Ari a wave. It's a brief thing. Hopefully, it won't be seen as too fucking altruistic.

Arionna de la Babin

If Ari had felt supremely comfortable with the situation, and the people, she might have found Grace's demeanor amusing; in some way she still did. They both seemed to lack social capabilities, though in amazingly different ways. Perhaps that's (part of) the reason why they don't get along quite so well. The others were...self evident to those in the know of her person.

She pauses nearby, close enough to talk, far enough to give them all space from her, more for her than them. "You're doing better." Better from last they met, when he left rather quickly. Grace's small wave casts a glance her way and Ari....sips her coffee. Not an overly active individual.

Ian

Arionna surmised that Ian was doing better than he had been upon their last encounter, to which Ian offered her a look that felt blandly cryptic (almost dismissive.) He didn't humor the assumption with a verbal response. Instead, his attention slid back to Grace.

"Oh I see. That was a different Grace I played last time. Your more fun twin. Does that make you the evil one?" His aloof expression melted in a subtle grin. "You should give me her number." He trotted back a few steps, glancing at the tree overhead. There was an hint of animal energy in the way he moved. The ready way he rested his weight on the balls of his feet, like any moment he might spring into motion. And sure enough, a moment later he jumped up and grabbed the overhanging branch, hanging there experimentally to be sure the tree would hold his weight before he swung and landed closer to Arionna.

"Arionna, right? From the Pho place?"

Grace

"I have to grow a goatee before I can be considered the evil one. Duh. I though everyone knew that," Grace says, totally dry.

She watches him do his little jumps and swings, and rolls her eyebrows. But there's a little smirk there too. She's only slightly mocking his showing off. After all, if you've got it, flaunt it, right?

"Arionna and I, uh... at least share one thing in common. We both have an appreciation for noodle shops."

Arionna de la Babin

"They also cackle. Villains cackle. Terribly. Sometimes they have a mustache that they twirl. A sort of Dali-esque, though hardly as grandiose. " She cast a glance towards Grace. "I think the mustache would suit you. But now the usual goatee. Far too tame and boring." Though Grace wasn't on her list of most entertaining people. She only seemed less of a mundane, and more of the sort of person who might twirl their mustache, if given one.

Maybe Ian was showing off. That was typical of men, was it not? A youthful male, in his reproductive prime meets a youthful girl in her reproductive prime, and naturally one must woo the other. So does the dance go. So when he hangs, and jumps, Arionna takes a step back and gives a small cant of her head. Mostly his actions are interesting (though it didn't help that he did have a very nice figure and face).

"Yes. I enjoy food. Culturally different. Noodles is part of that. "

Arionna de la Babin

[ARE.. noodles ARE. holy crap english]

Cala

Doors open for her.

They always have.

Small doors and large doors, locked doors, every door she has ever encountered. Some of the doors are more metaphorical than others, but even the most literal ones - they click.

Open.

--

Here's one of the arts a refugee learns: how to disappear in plain sight. How to slip beneath the ordinary radar. How to seem like part of the room. How to drift with but not of the crowd. How to settle for a time - to alight - against a bench, on one's own haunches, meditative as the light sky darkens and the strangers start to desert the park. Time to go, which she knows with a glance at the sky and something else - something (distant) - that pulls her upright from the energy-conserving reverie, the slip-through-the-spaces determination with which she lives this life.

Across the lake, just on the other side of the boathouse, someone looks up.

Senses the skim of energy in the air. Closes her eyes to feel the beat of it against her senses.

And: gets up.

Walks the other way.

Cala

Too far away for Arionna to sense her, but both Ian and Grace feel the brief brush of a stranger's resonance against their senses. Distant, then gone. It feels like a key sliding into a lock. Simple, slight.

Cala

(That was just a cameo, guys. I've gotta get up early to hike through the neverending snowstorm and below 0 temperatures to get to work tomorrow, so need to get my rest now. :) night!)

Ian

"I would genuinely like to see Grace grow a Dali mustache," Ian mused, eyeing Grace's features in this sharply appraising way - as though he were painting the picture in his mind. "She wouldn't be the cackling type though. She'd be the kind who sneaks up on people."

Maybe he was showing off, a little. Maybe he was just finding ways to keep his body warmed up. Arionna was a good 6 years younger than he was, which... was not an insignificant number. (Though Elijah had been the same age, hadn't he?) Either way, the gesture was more playful than luring. And when Arionna stepped back to widen the space between them, he didn't follow.

"I prefer sushi, but Pho will do in a pinch..."

His voice paused and trailed off in a beat of silence, and he glanced over his shoulder as though he'd heard (or felt) something that distracted him. A brief skim of his eyes across the lake. Hunting. But whatever he was looking for, he turned away a moment later.

"You go to school?" (This to Arionna.)

Serafíne

A week or more since she was last here but: a certain chilly Tuesday night, the skies studded with clouds that open up now and then to the brilliance of the ate night stars has her back. The van, up the gravel drive. Dan in the driver's seat, Sera somewhat moody on the passenger's side, knees drawn up, chin resting on the apex of the left. It's Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Carnival, and she's kinda sober (kinda, and doesn't plan to remain thus for long) and headed up to the oft-empty chantry.

There's something new in the air, though.

A helluva lot of somethings, and as they drive Sera murmurs her impressions to Dan, and when the van pulls up outside the garage, she gives him this spare little kiss on the apex of his cheek and unbuckles her seatbelt and sliiiiiiides right out, following that certain feeling through the chilly night.

Well, to be far, she does stop and grab a beer and a bottle of whiskey along the way.

But then, provisions secured, Sera goes seeking.

Kiara

When Dan and Serafine roll up in their van they spy a now-familiar car parked not too far off; fresh tracks in the dirt and the quiet ticking of the engine as it rapidly cools suggesting its owner had not long beaten them to the Chantry.

Kiara's been here on and off of course - tending to a small patch out near the Node she's attempting to invoke premature growth in for the season; cleaning surfaces; cooking food and storing it; bringing flowers in when she comes; settling and arranging them in vases to brighten rooms - but it's been a week, at least, since her last and there have been changes, to say the least.

New arrivals; new presences. The Verbena is outside in the fading light; all wrapped up in layers of earthy brown and grey; a scarf gifted to her at Christmas by Kalen tied loose around her neck; the ends hanging free over her shoulders; dancing as they're pushed to and fro by a breeze. It rustles the trees; what little are near and sets the brunette's hair shifting over her shoulders as she crouches; bag still slung over a shoulder to fuss with the edge of earth near the old, moss-covered fountain. There's shoots peeking out of the hard ground and there's a smile just edging into existence; curling up the edge of her mouth as she pushes to her feet again.

Sniffs against the chill and turns her body a little as if unerringly drawn to the sensation drawing near.

Perhaps she is.

"If we keep meeting like this, whatever will the neighbors say?"

Trinity

Whoever had cast the new defensive barrier around the property hadn't bothered wasting effort on trying to hide it. Sera and Kiara both felt the residue of the caster's unfamiliar resonance when they passed through it. The barrier slid over them like a ghost, illusive and whispering as it traced over their thoughts. But whatever it was looking for (whatever condition the caster had set,) it was a test that they easily passed. Sera, with her knowledge of the spheres involved, knew what the effect was - and what it was trying to prevent.

The question was: who had cast it?

When Sera and Dan arrived at the end of the driveway, they found Kiara already there. There were no other cars within eyeline, but there was a closed garage behind her and the lights in the Chantry were on.

Someone was there.

Serafíne

"We don't have any neighbors," Sera corrects Kiara, unerringly, as the latter rises. There's an edge to her mouth that is also the leading signal of a curling sort of smile. Sera in her heels and cocktail dress, her thigh-high black lace stockings and her battered leather jacket, which goes with nothing else that she wears and smells - divinely - like a dive bar. Waits until Kiara is fully upright before she adds, " - and neither of us would give a fuck what they think, anyway."

Over Sera's head: Dan gives Kiara a faint little wave and a welcoming smirk.

He's wary, though. That's evident, beneath everything.

"You just got here." Dan noticed the ticking engine, the recent arrival. Glances at Kiara's car and then back to Kiara. "I take it the new arrivals aren't friends of yours?"

Kiara

There's a noise that crawls up the brunette's throat at that, Serafine's correction - her awareness that if anything, neither of them would really give a fuck - and Kiara's dark eyes shift from Sera to Dan when he comments -

"No. I don't recognize them." Them. The feeling. The unspoken as she glances rather sharply at the house; dragging her eyes over the lit windows; the flood of warmth at once inviting and ominous. "I got here and I was contemplating going in to say hello, but - " There's a real hesitation, then. A particular uncertainty that creeps over Kiara's delicate features. It doesn't twist them, per say, but the sense of unease seems to be with her as well.

Perhaps there's reasons for it, the sense of trepidation of the unknown; the potency of magic hanging in the air casting the Verbena's expression into distrust.

She'd come upon a house once before, lit up, the residue of casting in the air - still - her mouth flexes with a warmer smile. " - three seems better odds than one."

Serafíne

This moment where Sera's eyes (which are dark and sometimes - as tonight - strangely still, perfectly aware) snag on Kiara's profile. The smallest threads of microexpression slipping across Kiara's features. The hesitation. The sense of trepidation. The awareness: all these things Sera absorbs with a care of her own that inflects her own mouth with a tenderness both transient and rooted.

"Three's much better odds than one," Dan echoes, coming up behind Sera and squeezing her shoulders - affectionate, familiar - as Sera bites her inner cheek hard enough that the bright bite of pain explodes in these tiny sunburst somewhere inside her skull.

Just enough.

Dan's opening the door for them, then, and Sera gives Kiara this brazen, lovely smile. The hint of blood at the corner of her mouth.

"C'mon. We'll say hi and maybe welcome and maybe what the fuck do you think you're doing here, depending on how things go. It's all good."

And she ducks beneath Dan's arm, heading inside, following the complex of resonances in the air.

Serafíne

Prime 1: watch ze weaving. Dif 4 -1 (focus)

Dice: 3 d10 TN3 (4, 8, 10) ( success x 3 )

Trinity

There was a chance that whoever was inside already knew that they had visitors. Maybe the delay in greeting was intentional, or maybe they just had their hands full. The first and most obvious resonance - the one they'd all felt when driving up the road to the house - was unfamiliar to them both. But the other two?

Wild and unbreakable (Pan used to compare it in his head to a mustang.) Sera felt it brush up against her senses as she stood speaking to Kiara. Maybe she recognized it, maybe she didn't. It had been... a long time.

And there was something about the third one that was both familiar and new. This underlying note of cyclical energy, coupled with scorching heat and regeneration. Like fiery rebirth.

"Sera!"

They opened the door just in time to catch sight of the girl as she bounded down the steps into the foyer. She was tall and lanky (taller than she'd been at 16,) with dark hair spilling over her shoulders. And young. Too young, really, to feel as powerful as she did. But then, that wasn't altogether unheard of.

Leah.

Her expression was a thing of tentative warmth. Hesitant of strangers, but clearly happy to see Sera. She jogged toward them, but stopped before she invaded their space, glancing toward Dan and Kiara. There was a pause... maybe a second or two. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of her shirt. Then she stepped forward to put her arms around Sera's light frame (if she allowed it.) It wasn't an exuberant hug (Leah had always been very sensitive of her physical space,) but it was a heartfelt gesture nonetheless.

"I didn't know if you'd still be here."

Kiara

There's a moment where Dan's pulling open the door and Serafine's smiling her bloody smile - c'mon - that it almost seems as if the Verbena will refuse. That she'll remain outside with cheeks tinged pink and dark eyes full of unrevealed hesitations; ghosts swimming in the expression that knits her face somewhere between fragile and furious. Kiara does linger for a moment, does catch Dan's eye and keep it and there's a hitch somewhere; a snagged breath she catches and holds for a beat before she nods.

Before she steps inside in Serafine's wake; the house draping over her with warmth; with presence. The Disciple already searching for the source of potential casting and then - oh. Kiara draws back a step; draws to one side as a young girl bounds toward the Cultist. The uncertainty melts, though. The tension in the Verbena's frame easing as it becomes clear -

"Friend of yours?"

- Kiara's voice warming to relief. She unwinds the scarf from around her neck; her mouth suggestive of mirth; at their hesitation; at her own. Dark eyes observe the girl and she tilts her head just so, curious now that the potential threat seems - less.

Now that she can breathe out.

Serafíne

"Christ." Sera mutters beneath her breath, the crawling half-smile carved across her mouth growing wider by the minute. By the moment, by the breath. There's Leah - taller now, changed but - oh, Sera shivers from the sensation and opens her arms to the younger girl and pulls her in, one hand cupping the back of Leah's head, mouth seeking the girl's temple, where her pulse beats, and for a thoughtful, lingering moment - Sera just inhales.

There's so much in that gesture. So much that she pulls inside of her, so much that she lets go of altogether, all at once, each piece framed by the other one to create this moment.

When they pull apart, Sera's eyes are... damp, shining in the ambient light.

"Leah. I didn't - " and Sera's half-smile spreads wider then, "I didn't really think I'd see you again, you know? It's good to see you. You remember Dan, right?"

This glance toward the tall guitarist. Maybe Leah does and maybe she doesn't. Dan was mostly the designated driver back then. Around, in the background.

"And this is Kiara. Kiara, this is Leah. And yeah, you could say we're friends. It's a long fucking story."

Haven't seen each other since a funeral, but isn't that how some things go?

Trinity

There were sounds coming from the kitchen. Shifting pans and the high, digital beep of a timer. Someone was cooking dinner. It smelled absolutely delicious and more than likely Mexican (corn tortillas and a spicy tomato sauce, with hints of citrus and jicama.) Leah, who had barely been able to stand being touched (let alone hugged) the last time Sera had seen her, closed her eyes and leaned into the embrace. Let out this soft breath when Sera kissed her. For a moment, her expression betrayed the weight of the memories they shared.

The last time they'd seen each other had been at a funeral.

When she pulled back, she nodded to Dan, who she did vaguely remember (though not nearly so clear as she did Sera.) When her attention shifted to Kiara, she offered a tentative smile. After a beat, she seemed to remember her manners and held out a hand. "Nice to meet you."

That was when Annie finally appeared from the dining room, wiping water from her hands with a fresh towel. She stopped when she got to the foyer and saw the three visitors. And here too, there was a second's pause for the recollection of memory while she watched Leah interact with their guests.

"It's good to see you again, Sera."

Annie was older than Leah, though not by enough of a margin to be her mother. (Older sister maybe? But they didn't look alike.) Annie's hair was strawberry blond, verging slightly into the reddish hue. Her skin was lightly tanned despite it being winter, with visible freckles on the bridge of her nose. She was average in height, shorter than Leah by about two inches, and muscular in the way people who do a lot of manual labor.

Once she had her hands dried, she draped the towel over her shoulder and reached out to offer her hand to Kiara. "Annie Pierce. I own the house. Leah and I are with the Verbena."

Kiara

It's a long fucking story.

Kiara's generous mouth curves into a fuller smile at that. "Isn't it always?" She offers in easy agreement and loosens the ties on her coat; shucking it and folding it over an arm along with her scarf. Beneath she's in dove grey on brown, some soft knitted cardigan that folds and tucks around the hip of her jeans. There's boots on her feet that give her height but she is still, by all true accounts, a slender figure. A little wilder perhaps for the way her hair falls in heavy waves around her face; bangs cut low over expressive eyes.

There's a familiar (to some) jumble of necklaces around her neck tonight; silver and stone and crystal; hoops in her ears; her wrists are bare, though. There's nothing but a blue stone ring on her index finger when she takes Leah's hand; closes her fingers around it; keeps it; just for the barest moment.

"Likewise. It's been so quiet here, we were - " The smells and sounds from the kitchen overtake Kiara for a beat; Annie does, too. Then: "Kiara Woolfe. It's nice to meet family. It's been a while." Another press of hands together; Kiara's eyes drop to where she's touching Annie's hand before she withdraws her own with this slight; suggestive give to her mouth.

"If the wildflowers didn't give me away - I'm with the Verbena too."

Serafíne

"Hey." This is how Sera greets Annie: less enthusiasm, perhaps even a touch of strange self-conscious that slides off her shoulders as easily as it slides over them. "You cooking dinner?" Lilting inquiry, the cut of Sera's dark eyes past Annie's shoulder. Pan spent far more time with the Verbena than Sera ever did, and she is conscious of his absence, suddenly. Conscious of Jim's absence. Conscious - suddenly, breathtakingly conscious - of all the absences in her life.
"Uhm," and well, she was about to introduce Kiara again but Kiara introduces herself and Sera - who looks like she is about to paint the town crimson and then burn it the fuck down kinda shivers because it is COLD, segues into, "Let's get inside, it is fucking freezing - "

before she slips off, away, within.

"I gotta pee," Sera announces, sotto voce, to Dan not longer after. He makes her excuses as she slides off toward the bathroom.

Later Sera will tell Annie and Leah who is left (no one) and who is gone (everyone) and whom she saw last and when and where, if they want to know. Later Sera might even tell Kiara the story of it all, though probably not in Leah's hearing.

Elijah, striving.

Elijah

He didn't leave the apartment. Luckily, he did actually have clothes there that did not consist of him having to go out and leave and change clothes because, truth be told, he wasn't sure if he was going to come back. He wasn't sure if he was going to lose his nerve or talk himself into having a conversation other thant he one that he started and now... now he had to explain. A lot. More than a lot.

He had to explain everything.

So, there he was, showering up, clothes in some neat little pile washing his hair with someone else's shampoo and contemplating how he was going to go about this. He even practiced.

"Okay," he said as the water started to go cold, "Jenn, magic is actually a legitimate thing and I didn't tell you about it because I was afraid you would have me committed."

The water was still getting cold. And it sounded dumb. He rinsed, let his conditioner set, and tried again.

"Jenn, I didn't tell you about this first because I didn't know what was going on and-" he has to pause there, amidst waiting and feeling the water grow cold, like a reminder that he was running out of time, and he muses that maybe... he doesn't have a good reason to have not told her. Kalen said it might be a bad idea?

"Ugh, since when have I listened to anything," he grumbles to himself, leans back and finally gets the damn conditioner out so he can get out of the shower and dry out before Jenn came home.

--

Elijah was laying in the floor, staring at the ceiling. The coffee table had moved, but mostly because he'd finally actually broken the coffee table. It was a cheap IKEA thing, so now he had something else to explain aside from magic.

Mostly, that magic was real, and they needed a new coffee table.

radiant

Jenn comes home later. The door swings open and there is the usual ritual whereby she divests herself: of keys and of coat, of gloves and scarf. Of the messenger bag - heavy - slung over her body. The quiet thunk of her laptop as it hits the hardwood floor. She has brought back a brown paper bag of take-out, the cheapeast sort. A large container of hot and sour soup and another of vegetable fried rice from the Chinese take-out place on the corner. That plus the vegetable spring roll she ate on the walk home (because it was hot and fried foods are always best fresh) cost four bucks. The soup has spilled a bit and the brown paper bag is damp and fragrant with it.

She grabs the Brita pitcher out of the fridge and pours herself a glass, walks around the small apartment until she can seat herself on the edge of the couch, near where Elijah is laying down, staring at the ceiling.

"You know, I didn't think I'd find you still here."

Elijah

"We're having big, earth shattering conversation of doom. If I left, I was gonna chicken out and just avoid it for another-" he waves his hands to approximate some period of time that he hasn't quite figured out how to say in words, so hand waving was appropriate.

"I even stayed sober," he tells her. Something smells delicious, so he sits up. He still has no idea where his shoes are, but knows that they're somewhere in the apartment. Has faith that they will turn up eventually.

"How's class?"

radiant

Jenn is watching him, her attention somewhat sidelong, her mouth compressed and perhaps pulled into a mildly sardonic expression when Elijah announces that they are having a big, earth shattering conversation of doom.

Something sober about her then, too.
Something a little bit sad.

Sad enough that she looks away and gives Elijah a one-hooked shrug of her right shoulder.

"It was alright. Professor Wayburn lectured the whole time and did that thing where he never looks up from his fingernails while he's lecturing. I dunno, I feel bad for him but I think if you are that shy maybe you shouldn't go into a profession that requires you to speak in front of people every day."

Elijah

"Dude, that guy... The only thing I can think is that he tried that picture everyone is naked thing that they tell you to do when you're nervous, and his imagination went to some Lovecraftian shit and Things Can't Be Unseen," he goes from sitting to standing, meanders to his coat to acquire cigarettes.

He doesn't smoke inside, not often anyway. He never even finishes one or two before he concludes he's done for the evening. An uncommitted smoker, more interested in the smoke than the tobacco.

He offers one, polite as always. One does not smoke alone, not if they can help it.

radiant

"You're giving him way too much credit for imaginary potential. I don't think he takes things far outside the opinion pages of the Wall Street Journal, or maybe Forbes Business Weekly."

Jenn shakes her head quietly as Elijah offers her a cigarette: no. She doesn't want one. Not right now.

The scent of hot and sour soup slowly pervades the room.

She's tracking his every movement. There's something (self) protective about her tonight. She could ease him back into the conversation they started earlier. Pave the way. Make things smooth.

She's not, though.

He's the one who left.

He's the one who has kept her in the dark.

Elijah

He doesn't do things easily. Ripped off bandaids too fast and only counted to two when yanking hard on stubborn baby teeth or puling out stingers or stickers. He doesn't give much warning, doesn't know how to do anything other than stand back or dive in, so... he dives in.

"For the past three and a half years, I really, honestly thought I was going crazy. It would be a lot easier if I was going crazy, and I thought that I was seeing things and hearing things that aren't actually there and I wanted to move because I thought that... if I wasn't around a bunch of people who thought I was crazy, then I could be normal."

A second passes, he purses his lips and lights a cigarette, but he isn't smoking it. It's just... burning. Burning because he needs something to do with his hands. Elijah inhales deep.

"Then I met people who... like... saw what I saw and heard what I heard and I figured that I wasn't normal and I wasn't ever going to be normal and there was this huge pressure to... like... be separate. Because the world and, fuck, reality doesn't work like I've always been told it works, and it turns out people can define that for themselves.

"A lot of really messed up stuff happened and I thought that if I told you then you would either think I'm crazy and have me committed or you would end up in serious trouble. Both of these reasons don't have anything to do with the way that you actually think and reason, and they're pretty much just backed by me buying into a bunch of bullshit and being too afraid to face the idea that being honest with you might scare you off."

radiant

Jenn breathes out, deeply and all at once. It sounds like a sigh.

"Elijah," patient this, and perhaps a bit weary. "The only reason I would ever do something to have you committed to a psychiatric hospital is if I thought you were suffering from a mental illness and were a danger to yourself or others. Just being a little bit - " here she pauses, her mouth pursing at the sides, " - off isn't enough. It's not fair that you don't have that faith in me to do the right thing by you.

"And - being schizophrenic - it's just a disease. Like heart disease or It's not a judgment on you, you know? And there's, like, literally no one in the world who has any kind of imagination or any hint of self-awareness who thinks they're normal. And normal people don't even fucking think about it, that's how normal they are.

"And I'm glad you've found people that you like, that make you feel like you are okay the way you are, but I hate the way you left me and the way you've pushed me away. I've been worried about you and I've been lonely and I - "

Pause here, implicit.

This brief, outward sigh.

"I just want what's best for you, okay? But I don't even know where you live. And I - I mean, I don't know what to say. Like you don't really live here but you kinda do, and if I make your brownies though, where the hell would I take them if you didn't decide to bring them over? It's just - "

Elijah

"I've been a shit to you, Jenn. And it's not fair, you haven't done anything to make me think I can't trust you," he exhales, takes a drag off his cigarette because if he doesn't it will go out soon.

"I live in a warehouse, and it's kind of awkward. I don't actually know if Kalen is completely cool with me bringing people over, but I don't think I actually want to keep living there," he takes a moment and looks at her, "I've not been cool, and for someone who is an incredibly important part of my life I haven't been good to you. Like-"

He takes a minute again.

"If this is going to make sense, I have to explain that I-I'm not sick, there's nothing wrong with me. There's a whole other world out here, though-" he stops.

"What do you need from me to make things okay?"

"Elijah, if your boyfriend isn't really cool with you bringing people over that's not really okay, and if you don't want to live there you should stop living there." Jenn returns in a quick sling-shot, with a deep sigh of frustration as Elijah tells her that he's been a shit to her and he hasn't been cool and on and on.

"I don't need anything from you to make things okay. You know? I'm not spending my resenting you or disliking you or being mad or hurt because you've kept me in the dark. Things are okay.

"And I know that you have digested and encapsulated this stigma about mental illness and you've like tattooed that everywhere in your psyche and yourself and I know that has everything to do with your family and the shit way they treated you and the waay society is but I'd wish you'd stop thinking that or go to counseling or do something to break through that stigma. He took a long, hard drag off the cigarette.

Truth be told, he wasn't a big fan of cigarettes, but he was a fan of deep breathing. Inhaled well enough that he could feel smoke in his lungs and he exhaled and he was paying attention, or at least seemed like he was paying attention right up until he wasn't paying attention and, instead had repositioned. Flicked ash into his hand because he didn't have anywhere else to put it, didn't plan that far ahead but knew he couldn't very well ash all over the hardwood floor, not when he didn't intend on cleaning up.

And he thinks about people. Thinks about the things he's learned and how he's learned and thinks about Serafine. Thinks about how achingly beautiful the world is, thinks about Ian and how excited he had been to show him-

The stars. Every blistering, glimmering frozen light in the sky. Elijah got up, took a seat on the couch next to Jenn and wiped his hands off on his jeans. He's holding his cigarette like it's a formality, focuses on the way that the smoke curls and leans a little against her, like he needs to be aware that she is there because soon enough he knows something is going to happen.

Because he wants it to happen.

Because he desperately needs this to happen, and the idea that magic- with a c or magick with a ck isn't real. That the world isn't consensual, that it just is the way it is and there is a feeling in the air. Something that sparks and something that can't sit still. Can't rest, can't just be. No, it is a quiet upheaval, probably the same kind of upheaval that ruined the coffee table and he is determined.

"Just, close your eyes for a minute, this is important."

he sounds distracted. The kind of distracted that one gets when they are focused. Very... very focused.

It has to be perfect. It has to be real. He exhales again, and something nags and aches for a second, but he doesn't care. This is important.

And, at some point,t he world will yield, will do as it does and the tenuous strands that keep people anchored to this particular world will give way. The connections seem tenuous and the sky is alight with stars and half the floor is gone and there is something there. The colors are bright and dull. The walls seem gossamer, and the world seem smore itself. Unhindered by the things that are not strong enough as ideas to stand the testament of time. Only that which is forged by belief remains.

"Don't panic, okay? When you open your eyes, things are gonna be weird, but it's so fucking beautiful," he tells her. Insists, and speaks like this is reverence. Like this is sacred and perfect.

Jenn is making noises at Elijah as he starts to work. He has to Work. His skills are small enough - his connection to the world is narrow enough that even the smallest changes require time, ritual, attention, focus. Jenn wants to tell him that she knows it is important, that it is okay, that everything will be alright and if he wants to move out of the warehouse but doesn't want to move back here, that's okay, she'll be there to help him figure it out.

That's what friends do.

But something about the way Elijah moves through the space, something about his distance draws her brows together in concern or curiousity. He sits next to her. He leans against her.

She leans back.

And closes her eyes.

Somewhere in the middle of all of this, her free hand finds his free hand.

Something strange and something small at the back of her throat. It reminds her of the last time she got high, the scratchy burn of the marijuana, the foggy halo of it around her head, softening the edges of her perception and making her feel both more settled in her skin and closer to its edges. She wonders if - perhaps - he has something more than tobacco in that cigarette he's smoking.

Then she opens her eyes.

And her breath goes all out of her, all at once.

Her hand grasps his, hard. Her fingers dig into his knuckles.

Elijah

His fingers intertwine with hers, and he can feel her fingernails press into his skin and it hurts, but it isn't an unfamiliar pain. Isn't unwelcome.

"The first time I saw it, I thought there was something really wrong with me, because I thought the world shouldn't look like that but... it does. It's the reflection of our world- and they're near infinite. Our truth makes their truth, and their truth makes our truth. This is the umbra," he says, pulls her hand up to his and kisses the back of it.

"You're not high, you're not stoned, this is just... pushing past a barrier. It's true magic, not bullshit stage stuff."

But in the room there was something, a mirror, another reflection and he peers at it. A mirror that has no physical analogue. Nothing that matches up with it in the apartment, and he tilts a little at the corridor, the hallway long and dark and at the end that open door.

"Once you see things, once some doors are open, you can't really go back, ya know? Whatever happened back in high school opened that door for me."

Speaking of doors, he does start to get off the couch, not quite ready to depart from her side, not ready to let go of her hand, but interested in the mirror.

radiant

The mirror does not react to Elijah's interest.

It is a mirror, or maybe it is a reflection, or maybe it is a door.

It sits there. It does not move.

--

"Oh my god." Jenn murmurs, a low note of awe wrapped up in the skein of her voice. What else can one say to this: the world into which she has fallen. She half-turns, following the darting movement of some small spirit skittering up the gossamer wall, cranes her head to catch glowing blue lines of radiance skittering with small spiders creating and maintaining and repairing those highways of electric connection.

Her breathing is ragged. She knows that she isn't stoned. She turns and she glances at Elijah, her eyes dark on his profile, breathing - carefully - in and out, out and in and wonders if this will stop when she lets go of his hand.

Does not just wonder.

Lets go of his hand, then. Flexes her own against his - once - and kind of shakes herself free and stands up and starts this circuit, watchful, reverent, aware. "It's like a world of metaphors. Umbra means shadow. Is this like, inside things? Or some kind of exoskeleton? This is incredible. Do those - those things know we're here?"

"Can I touch them?" - but no.

No she can't. It's just a vision superimposed on her own vision, nothing like walking there, nothing like slicing through that barrier. Nothing like -

"You can do this whenever you want?"

Elijah

And thus, since it does not move, since he knows he can't touch it, it doesn't stop him from going up and trying to touch it. He doesn't expect anything, doesn't expect to feel cool glass against his hands or anything of the sort. But he has to, has to because he needs to know if it will yield, needs to know if he can pass through that particular barrier.

There has to be a way to move there.

"I don't know how to touch things yet, I haven't figured that out," he says.

"And it's like the inside of things and how they work as well as the framework for it. What we do in the physical plane impacts what happens there, what happens over there impacts how we work here- like, if I squished a whole bunch of those spiders- which I wouldn't do because that would be a dick move- the power might go out, or they would get angry and I don't know.

"I think... sometimes things know we're here. I've looked before and found stuff looking back."

He looks back at the mirror, repositions so he can inspect it closer. He is waiting for something. Waiting for his reflection to come back, to jeer, waiting for eyes that are not his own to look back at him.

You can do this whenever you want?
"And some other stuff, but this? This is my favorite... it's exhausting. Magic isn't easy."

radiant

There is no glass. It feels like smoke and his fingers skim right through.

He waits.

There's no reflection.

No other-self jeering.

Just a hallway.

Just an open-door.

--

Jenn has sunk back down onto the couch. Tipped her head back to watch the tracing lights criss-cross against the sky. "How? I mean - how do you do this. How can I do this. Why doesn't everyone?"

Elijah

"Reality is stuck together by the general belief that everyone holds, and it's kind of majority rule. But it's consensual like the consensus agrees and it's consensual like I consent to this being my reality. when I died, I think I kind ofmetaphysically tore up my "I believe this is reality" contract."

He paused.

"I don't know how to show someone else how to... like... get over that first step. That first big earth shattering moment of realizing the universe's, like, infinite potential. I think anyone can do it, it's a lot of will and that all the barriers in the universe are just temporary. I don't know how to help someone else get there, it's like some part of you just... well... wakes up."

He looks at the mirror a little longer, inhales deep and holds his breath and takes a few steps because he doesn't feel glass, expects to feel nothing on the other side, but hopes... hopes that maybe this is a door way.

radiant

It doesn't feel like anything, it doesn't feel like anything at all: walking through that glass. There is no shattering, there is no sundering, there is no undoing. Elijah is both here and there. He can hear Jenn's voice though by now it is more background than immediate, and something about the pattern and pace of his

heart.
beat.

suggests to him that he is somehow suspended here. Somehow between. Somehow -

else.

He is in a hallway. It is long, it is dark.

The air is cool and it has a low, quiet hum to it, and that hum changes with each moment.

There is light at the end of the hall: an open door.

Between there and here - a half-dozen others, all closed.

Elijah

He sees light, an open door, and he follows the path, though he keeps to the edge of the corridor. Idly, the young man puts his hands out to touch the sides, to feel the passing of it under his fingertips and he is at once here and not here, and his curiosity has gotten the better of him.

He can hear Jenn talking, but he knows that something about this isn't quite the same, this isn't like the usual world that he sees. A half a dozen worlds, and another ahead of him, far, far away but bridging the gap. The cigarette is forgotten, pocketed and shoes still forgotten because they hadn't been important enough to take on the journey but his lighter was.

radiant

Elijah sees a hallway lined with doors and imagines it a path. He reaches out and feels the walls beneath his fingers: warm and slightly viscous, perhaps, or perhaps merely warm. A wall.

Like a wall.

Then a doorway, humming, closed. Energy behind and beneath.

There are no echoes here, except perhaps the remnant background of his best friend's voice, not even the sound of footsteps.

The light is brighter in the center.

There is another doorway

humming,

closed.

He has a lighter in his pocket, and he walks, and the hallway lengthens and the door - ahead - which sheds light but offers no view of what is on the other side - is starting to close.

The light diminishes. Behind him, beneath him, beyond him: the world rumbles. He can almost make out what it has to say.

Elijah

There's another doorway, humming and closed, and his hands find a knob or some means that he thinks it may open, and he tries the knob. The world rumbles around him and he can almost make it out. Curiosity got the better of him, but the humming, the thrumming, the intensity around him-

All these options and he seemed intent on going for the most obvious one but... perhaps he could explore? Time was running out, there was a sense of urgency, and he could have turned around, talked to his friend, tried to answer her questions, but he needed to know what he's doing.

"I'll be back," he calls back, insistent because he would be back.

If the door doesn't give, he makes a run for the door that seems to be closing, the door he knows is open.

radiant

His hand on the handle and the handle is warm and the handle is molten and the handle is melting in his hands and the door swings open as if it were waiting for him, as if it were bursting at the seams or at the hinges, and the handle is warm, and it molds itself to the sharp of his hand, as if it were made for him, and the door gives,

inside is dark.

inside is the smell of salt water and sea-spray.

inside is the movement of the ocean.

Dark dark dark. Nothing to be seen but this low moving rumbling that is deeper than the shadows behind him. Jenn's voice is still everywhere and nowhere, slower than he came imagine (tick. tock.) beside him: the door he has opened.

Ahead: the rapidly closing -

Elijah

He wants to pull his hand back, wants to pull away because it is hot and it is molten and he can smell the sea spray and he can taste the salt water and something inside of him seizes because he knows, he knows he can't swim. Expects to step in and feel nothing. Expects to plunge into the darkness and be eaten up by whatever was there.

There was a light at the end of the corridor. The door that was rapidly closing, a place that he knows he saw his doppleganger come through. Poke him and prod at him.

"Fuck that guy," he grumbled. He drew in a deep breath, and took a step inside of the door, closed his eyes and closed the door behind him. He could have followed the light at the corridor, could have followed the rapidly closing door, or taken a path less marked. Something waiting for him, something unknown and dangerous.

I am not a coward, he thinks.

I will not be a coward, he thinks.

And through and into the darkness with him.

radiant

So much expectation. So much anticipation. So much bracing, as the handle molds itself to his hand and he steps through the door, into darkness -

- darkness which feels absolute. The sound has changed. Gone is the vaguely settled slow-roll echo of Jenn's voice (as if he were inhabiting not syllables, not even phonemes, but the broken down half-life of phonemes, or perhaps something even smaller than that). Gone is the rumble of the world upended, overturning, erasing itself: through the door and into the rush of an ocean.

He can't swim.

There are such forces here.

This moment where he is caught in the upcycle of a breaking wave, another where he is plunged beneath and half-a-second to gasp for air and then -

thrown under again.

Some glimpse of a shore then, the only light in the darkness the reflection of the moon along the strange but - he's plunging under, is being plunged under again, water fills his lungs.

There was shoreline. There was the briefest of brief moments, knowing the moon was there, knowing there was shoreline, knowing that there was air at the shoreline, and he feels water, water everywhere. He feels water in his lungs around his body and his mind screams at him we're dying, we're dying- again and again!

And there are thoughts, and there are no walls, just water, just the world around him that seems so small and all he can think of is to spread out and try to be bigger in hopes of maybe floating to the surface, not flailing and just going with the current.

You're going to drown, his brain tells him. He's too busy trying to hack salt water out of his lungs to notice. He's doing his best imitation of a dead body. He might not swim well, but he has watched enough Forensic Files to know that they tend to float.

What happens when you stop consenting?

Well, Jenn, you walk into a random hallway in your living room and accidentally almost drown. Elijah has the presence of mind to try and roll over, maybe he could float on his back or something. He'd get to shore eventually, but eventually wasn't terribly quick.

"The shore's not going anywhere," he says, grumbles, but attempts to try and kick in the direction of land. There would be land, he just had to get there, he just had to ride the surf and get there, "I don't have to hurry."

Unless there are sharks. Were there sharks? Was there anything? It was so dark, and he has the presence of mind to pat himself down, try and feel his lighter and his pocketwatch to make sure he has all of his faculties.

radiant

"Why the fuck do you think you have to get to the goddamned shore?"

The voice, his voice? The voice that is always there.

Elijah grumbles and pats himself down in the midst of the churning of the violent waves, tries to find the lighter and pocketwatch but he is being thrown again, trying to swim.

"Why the fuck do you think there is a goddamned shore."

Elijah

"Because I don't want to drown-" he insists. He insists and there is intensity there and that is answer enough.

He has to get to shore because he doesn't want to drown.

No, strike that.

There is a shore because Elijah doesn't want to drown. Because he insists and it takes all of his energy and all of his thoughts to keep floating because he doesn't want to drown, and while it might take time, while floating might get him to shore, there is the curiopsity of what might be under the dark, dark surface. If the water was cold, if he could hold his breath for just a little while, if he could go down instead of up and maybe find some world there.

Find something miraculous before his body gives way. His eyes go to the sky, look for the moon and the stars. Something to orient himself by.

radiant

"You don't want to drown?"

The voice scoffs.

"Isn't that how you fucking woke up?"

Elijah

"I might not come back this time," he justifies.

And? some part of him thinks. Like it's a big important question. What would happen, what is the worst that could happen, he could pursue something different, could find the comforts of the shore, or he could chase something closer, deeper, lower. Elijah drew in a big breath, tried to push past that feeling of anticipation.

He didn't want to drown, he didn't want to die, but...

Elijah pushes the air from his lungs and takes another deep breath. The young man made a decision, felt the tide and the cooling sea breeze. He didn't want to drown, but he wanted to see what was beneath the waves more. He wanted to press further, see if there was something else. The shore was comfortable. The shore was constant, the shore would be there.

He didn't know how to swim, but he figured sinking couldn't be hard, just struggle downward. So, instead, he went... down. Into the water, into the feeling of what he feared, what kept him here, tethered, because he would not be a coward. He'd insisted, he'd been so emphatic. So intent that this would not be what defined him.

What was fear but an opportunity? What was death but a door?

radiant

Nothing.

Ev. Er. Y. Thing.

Three hours, four hours, seven hours, eleventy-seven days later he wakes up.

He's in his living room. Jenn's asking him How he does this and why no one else can, her head tipped back, her eyes hooded, watching the movement of the lights through the sky, against the sky, behind the sky. Elijah can feel the magic he shares with her and the way it strains reality, the way it deforms it, the way it remakes it.

Feels it shoving back at him.

Feels himself resist it.

Feels his heart beating, feels himself - well -

alive.

That's what they all say.

radiant

One of those nights where the dreams - whatever they are - seem to wrap around your neck and viscera and throttle you. Discursive, discordant. Displaced somehow, and you wake up without a clear sense of where you are and when you are and where you should be, just a throat full of bile and a pounding heart because because because because there was something - something - you should've done.

The apartment.

Oh right. The apartment. His apartment. How precisely Elijah ended up here last night is a blur, but distinct pieces of an argument - oh, let us call it a 'discussion' - he had with a tearful Jenn at some ridiculous hour over the electric stove and a late night pot of Kraft Mac'N'Cheese.

It's not fair, Elijah.

I tell you everything.

I told you everything and now it's like -

I'm worried about you. I don't even know what to say. I don't even know if saying anything is worth it because it's not like you give a fuck -

--

There's no way around her hurt. He hasn't been anything close to frank with her and of course it feels to her like he is letting her go in favor of nothing good at all.

That was then. This is now.

He wakes up in a bed, warm in here, gray sky through a grinding window and a great slab of wall. The streetsounds muffled but present, this background haze that makes one feel both in the world and outside of it. when he sits up, the sheets pool around his torso, but he's still in last night's clothes.

There's a mirror propped against the wall by the door.

Movement within that captures his attention but - somehow - so hard to see.

Elijah

She knows when he's lying. She knows when he's lying because Jenn has seen him when he was not a practiced liar, has seen his eyes dart to the side and has seen his stomach tense up the world start to slide. She knows when he is lying, because he winces when he's done talking, like it hurts to say. LIke he hates doing it, like he hates lying to her. Maybe that's the reason for the silence. Lies of omission.

It isn't fair, and I'm sorry, but really-

Any time there is a but, there's a hit coming. Something painful and unexpected, or in this case very expected. Rote excuses for everything.

He doesn't go to class.

Elijah doesn't go to class all the time, not religiously, but just enough to pass. Just enough to blow through those alotted absences early because he has a theory that if he saves them up for the end then he'll miss something important while the professor is slamming hard and fast through to finish the syllabus. He has a theory, and it's worked out so far. How nice it must be to skate so easily, to have no repercussions if he does fail because it's not his money on the line. Not his scholarship. Not his financial aid because, even if the apartment- his apartment- was on a crappy side of town and even though he he had a crappy job and allowance, he still had parents who would foot the bill if he fucked up. People who were willing to-

Nevermind. It didn't matter. He could taste tequila and blue box Mac'n'cheese still. Sat up and pushed his hand to the side to see if there was a body beside him. Seems it's just him right now.

Elijah slid out of bed, pocketwatch pressed to the inside of his rib cage courtesy of a vest he never took off. His jeans were half unbuttoned. His shoes were... somewhere. He never remembered where they were. If I could tell you, you would think-

What would she think? Shouldn't you let her decide that?

He cleared his throat and he meandered closer to the mirror.

radiant

"If I could tell you."

The mirror's just a mirror. There's a surface, and a reflection. There's Elijah Poirot reflected in the surface, the disaster area of a bed behind him. He's barefoot. Red lines from the pillow still etched into his skin. Morning, morning morning.

If I could tell you, that's bullshit.

It's just a mirror.

If/would. If/could.

It's just a mirror. And he's reflected in it.

It's just a mirror.

(Except: he's smiling. A viscious note of challenge in his eyes.)

"Fuck that. Move your ass, kid."

Want/Will.

Elijah

There is a challenge in his eyes, a smile that doesn't mirror on his own face but he looks at the mirror- can you trust your own body to tell you the truth? Maybe he was smiling and he didn't know it, didn't feel it. It's just a mirror, except he's smiling, and Elijah knows his own eyes. Knows that challenge in them and doesn't precisely know what he's challenging.

He put his hand on the mirror, the thing that's just a mirror and he hears something.

Fuck that, move your ass, kid.

"What, do you want me to go-" he took a step away from the mirror and was ready to go to bed again but... he didn't. Elijah paused and turned around. "She's going to think I'm fucking crazy."

He tries to reason with his reflection. As if that wasn't crazy enough.

"You don't think I'd tell her, do you?"

radiant

Elijah's reflection rolls its eyes and flips him the fuck off.

"Coward."

Says the voice, and it comes not from the mirror but from everywhere. The bed and the sheets and the walls and the matte gray skin. Inside his skin and without his skin. From the singular molecules of dust dancing in the stale apartment air. Wherever.

It isn't even accusatory right now.

Just, somehow, Naming.

In the mirror, his doppleganger sticks up a second middle finger to match the first. Then turns around and starts to walk away down a long dark corridor.

Which, you know, there doesn't seem to be one of those in the room.

Elijah

But naming something makes it real. Naming something makes it true, gives it form, gives it purpose, and he knows this to be true, and knows it to be true when the voice says what it is. As though this were just an act of stating what was in the room. There was a mirror. There were floorboards. There is a coward.

"I am not a coward," he insists, turns to find an exit, to find Jenn, because he has to prove this, he has to say something he can feel it in his gut and in his knees that he is scared, and he can think of forty thousand quotes about courage but finds them failing because he can be a coward. And some part of him is fine with that.

There is a louder, more insistent part of him that is not fine with that. Not content to settle with definitions, not content to stay and not take a risk because look where risks got him-

No. Look where risks did get him. He's here, he's awake, he's alive and vital and the walls feel stale and that sound is coming from everywhere. He then takes his moment to look for his corridor. If there was one in the mirror, maybe there was one here, maybe he was losing touch, maybe that was a symbol, but he couldn't... he couldn't just walk away.

"I will not be a coward," he corrects.

radiant

Elijah looks around the room and the room is perfectly ordinary. The rumpled bed, the brick walls. The window with a view of another wall, the patch of the sky. This sense of being lived in without being lived in.

The mirror leaned against the wall by the door, the murky light. His own tall frame getting smaller by that familiar trick of perspective.

Elijah tells himself - or whoever the fuck it is - that he will not be a coward, and that retreating figure stops. Makes this scoffing noise and glances over its shoulder, meeting Elijah's eyes.

They are not his own.

"That's what they all say, kid."

Turns around then, and keeps on walking.

Elijah

He looks at the figure, its retreat and its warning, that's what they all say.

It's him, but it isn't. Coward, he remembers, hears echoed in his own ears, translates across his shoulders and resides into the pit of his stomach where it can either fester or he can throw it back up like poison but something still lingers, something still stays seated in his mouth.

"I don't owe you a goddamn explanation," he tells the reflection. Not quite his reflection, because it's not quite his eyes but it's enough. Enough to make him pause.

And it settles with him, looks back at the mirror and he shakes his head. Just an encounter, just a reflection. Just... just a reminder. There's a world of infinite capacity and capability, he could do a number of things, if he wanted to do them.

"Hey Jenn, you still here?"

he meandered about for a moment. Uninterested in finding his shoes and, instead, finding something that mattered

radiant

"Mmmph."

He finds her in the kitchen eating a bowl of Froot Loops with almond milk. It's lunch time or something close to it. Her backpack is slung over one of the kitchen chairs, one strap slipping off the frame.

"I think you missed class."

It's not pointed. Just an observation.

Elijah

"I'm dropping physics anyway," he finds her in a chair int he kitchen, and when he sees her, he smiles, pleased but... on edge. He'd had a conversation with nothing, conversed with a reflection and now... now he was going to tell her something that he needed to have said about three years ago when the world came crashing down.

"Are you gonna miss class if I... y'know... talk to you?" it's awkward, and he knows it's awkward. Or maybe it's awkward because he's making it awkward, but whatever the case, Elijah perched himself atop the meager kitchen counters.

"I've been kinda weird since... y'know," the whole drowning, dying, sophomore year thing. The whole you stopped breathing and I thought you died thing. The whole we don't talk about what happened thing. "And... I kinda want to explain why."

radiant

This isn't the sort of conversation one expects one's sort-of best friend and sort-of roommate and sort-of everything to initiate sometime in the middle of day and yet here she is. Here they are: the middle of the day, the conversation changing, the moment being shifted as moments are wont to do.

Jenn is still holding the bowl of Froot Loops in her left hand, has a spoon full of them ready to shovel into her mouth, and gives Elijah a brow-lifted glance that is somehow both cautious and inviting. After so many months, she hardly knows whether to believe that he actually wants to talk to her about anything serious - she's also not ready to scoff.

"I might," she says to his question, with a quick shrug. "I don't mind, if it's important enough."

Elijah

It was easier not telling her. It was easier just dancing around it and pretending like it didn't happen, but Jenn knew things. Jenn knew about Alicia's dad, about some quasigovernmental organization. She knew that things were weird, but Elijah? Elijah hasn't told her anything.

"I did die."

It's easier to start there.

"I don't mean almost... I mean... like... heart stopped, everything stopped, tried to pass on to the next life but if you have unfinished business you're stuck here and I didn't want to be dead," it's on his face, plain as day, he wants her to believe him. Not out of some malicious joy, but a genuine, abiding need.

"And it's been different since then. There's been this push since then, and-and I don't know if it's me or part of me or something bigger than I am, but there's this push to find something bigger and-" he's rambling. He knows he's rambling, and his hands are clapsed in front of him. Knuckles white, disguising sweaty palms and a racing heartbeat. "It's like, I know the world is full of potential now, I've seen it and I want that potential to push past into kinetic and fuck if it doesn't sound lame but magic is fucking real, anything's fucking possible and everything's permitted and-"

He suddenly unclasps his hands and runs them through his hair. Pushes his back against the cabinets.

"I moved out because I thought I pissed off the same kind of people that took Alicia's dad. I didn't want bad shit to happen to you here so I moved in with Kalen and Grace."

A little quieter.

"There's this whole other world out there, and I'd show it to you if you'd let me and if you'd believe me."

radiant

"You're rambling," Jenn points out, quietly and not unkindly. "And I think maybe you're hung over. But seriously, quasigovernmental agencies or not - what's worse than lying to your best friend? What's worse than freezing me out? What's - "

She closes her eyes, spoon hovering over her bowl of cereal and shakes her head. There's an awful lot there to take in, and she wants to give him space to tell her, but he's rambling and there's so much space between them that has been inhabited by -

"I am gonna go to class. I'll be out by six. We can grab dinner and if you still think you have things you want to tell me and to show me, I'll listen."

Once upon a time she might've said that they were friends, and she owed him that much.

Now it feels like the debt is reversed: the other direction.

That doesn't matter.

"Text me, okay?"

She'll come. She'll listen. She can't promise anything more.

Elijah

He nods.

All he does is nod, and it doesn't take a genius to realize that there is space there. That there are things he has taken for granted because he thought he could.

"I'll text you," he says.

Elijah doesn't leave the apartment, though. Not until later, not until dinner. He has a lot of making up to do.

The Bodega.

Serafíne

The afternoon was so ridiculously warm that it felt almost like spring. Has felt almost like spring for most of the ridiculously warm winter, mind, and everywhere the early spring bulbs are already poking up through the ground. The half-neglected planters with last-season's pansies in front of The Bodega have actually perked up and are starting to think about blooming again. For all that the afternoon was warm there's the possibility of snow tonight, at least in the higher elevations.

There's a little more foot traffic in Sante Fe than there usually is on a Tuesday in February. Some couples are hitting the town early for Valentine's day. They can get a table and some privacy tonight, save the money for a sitter come the weekend. Others are just lured outside by the weather and an early case of spring fever. A few of the galleries have stayed open later than usual and the bars and restaurants are bustling.

The Bodega is a bit of all of the above. Gallery, bar, coffee shop specializing in the slow-pour method. Next door - housed in the same gray-brick building and connected to the shop by a framed brick archway - is a little clothing boutique framed that seems to cater to the romantic Victorian S&M chick in all of us.

That's where Sera is - hidden away in one of the dressing rooms but her resonance is everywhere.

Dan's next door in the coffee shop, acting like a proper young professional, his MacBook open on a table, headphones over his ears, a French press and two coffee mugs on the table.

Alexander

Whether you believe that fate drives people together and apart or that random probability pushes and pulls people away from each other like the waves of the sea, the effect recently has been the same for Alexander. There hasn’t been any actual intent to avoid bumping into people – Awakened people – beyond his frequent forays into the mountains to get away from everyone and everything. There’s a peace to be found there that just can’t be found in the land of cell phones and TVs and SUVs and non-stop activity.

But tides turn and the push of fate or random chaos seem to be bringing Alex back into contact with those people who see more of the world than most. The tide brings him to the bar area, where he’s sat nursing a beer. His attention seems to be focussed on a tea-light sat in the bottom of a glass holder, running his hand over the top to feel the heat and watching the dance of the flame as his movement stirs the air. He uses the sensation of the heat to focus his will and expand his own perception of the candle, watching the thermal energy drifting and circling above the glass.

He knows that Sera is nearby, the feeling of her presence lingers in the room and centres on the changing rooms. He doesn’t make his way over – not while she’s changing and trying things on. Partly because hanging around the ladies’ changing rooms tends to get you strange looks and partly because she might ask him to pick something out. So he stays put until the tide nudges them again.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen is not looking for them. He is looking for Valentine's Day presents. An exercise in shopping that he does not feel the need to confine to Danny. It is a holiday of some kind. It is a wonder, really, that Kalen hasn't decorated the House with hearts and streamers. He does plan to leave lots of candy, but the decoration and general production is absent from Valentine's day with Kalen.

He's been away too, focused on his library and vanishing to Chile for a few days that turned into a few more days too. Visiting a few of his old acquaintances that he hasn't spoken to since bothering to let the world know he wasn't dead. He's been spotted more often, but if Kalen vanishes for long there are search parties. He's seen the evidence of this on Ginger.

Kalen walks up to Alexander without any particular concern for warning him about his presence, but there is no surprise gesture from behind. Some of the things he has in bags are fragile. Instead of tormenting Alexander and ending up on the ground again, he drops into the seat across from him as though he were fucking invited.

"Hey."

Serafíne

Alexander has a pretty good fix on Sera's location and a pretty reasonable basis not to disturb her there. Hell, he has a whole handful of pretty good reasons not to disturb her, and he doesn't know the half of it. She probably wouldn't just ask him to pick something out. She might ask him to try something on. She might ask him to zip or unzip or otherwise assist her with the incommodius work of getting into and out of the pieces she likes -

- and god, the pieces she likes.

Like this one: a one-sleeved little blach dress with see-through metal eyelets in a loose weave. The metal frames half the bodice, creates the spaghetti strap, and is then woven into the fabric of the dress in a swatch that cuts down to reveal the sharp edge of her right hip, and make the already short skirt, thoroughly see through.

Her long hair is a loose mess of toussled curls, with a hit of static electricity from trying on so many dresses in the dry indoor air so that it haloes around her, lovely.

She hasn't - doesn't - bother slipping back into whatever she wore here. She's probably taking that dress so it doesn't matter: but when she senses Alexander and then his magic and then reaches and sees the threads he is weaving. Well, aww. She is excited.

Comes out of the dressing room in that dress, barefoot, tags still on it somewhere, crosses through the boutique to the bar, drops a hand on Dan's shoulder as she passes and kisses him on the crown of his head, then heads on over to Alexander and Kalen's table.

Takes a seat of her own.

"Alexander," Sera breathes, with a little waggle of her fingers toward Kalen. "Lookit you. You're Working."

Alexander

Alexander hadn’t roused the locals to go Kalen-hunting because, even though he’s been distant, he hasn’t been completely out of contact. An occasional text message, voice mail or phone call stops him worrying that people have gone missing and stops others worrying – too much – about him. Even with that occasional contact, people can still drift apart from each other.

But not, apparently, these three. Kalen arrives and Alexander turns to look up at him and smiles as he sits down. The days may have turned into weeks since they last physically bumped into each other, but it doesn’t feel like the time has really passed. “Hey. How are you? And how was Ramon?”

Unknown to him, today wouldn’t have been the first time that others would have tried to get Alex dressed up given the opportunity. This time, at least, would have missed out on Disney characters and a certain song that seems possible to escape. On the other hand, he doesn’t have any interest in finding out how he looks in a corset. Small mercies. He does turn to watch Sera as she walks up to the table, occasionally unsure of quite where to look. He’d come across her wearing even less before, but still… Those lines are still there, and his gaze heads up and stays above the line of the shoulder.

As he looks up, he gets a view of more of the room. Each of the tables has a similar candle sat on it, each one creating a haze of drifting heat above it. But beyond that, Kalen and Sera and the other people in the room cast off their own heat haze. It’s hard to follow any individual source but the whole? The whole is almost a work of art.

There’s a smile for Sera as she greets him. “Trying to. It’s pretty cool.” Given how he’d reacted to some of his previous attempts at opening up his sense to his surroundings, it’s possibly surprising at how well he seems to be taking to this new sense.

Kalen Holliday

Kalen doesn't seem surprised, not by Alexander Working (he's come across that before, after all) and not by running into the two of them here. Alexander can see heat radiating off of things and Kalen can feel winter with every breath, gathering and ready to spill out from the constraints of the approaching spring.

His gaze spends perhaps a bit more time lingering below the line of Serafine's shoulders, though not much. "I did always wonder where you found dresses like that. And now I know. It looks lovely."

Kalen smiles at the mention of Ramon. "He's good. He may have had some...very gently stern commentary after he took my confession, but he's...used to that. Mostly he does this thing with his eyes like 'I have infinite compassion and infinite love and infinite joy about the world' and then I feel guilty about not being a better person. It's...I think he does that to everyone."

Serafíne

Are you in love with that priest?

Serafíne

"Trying nothing," the creature murmurs, her eyes a dark, candle-lit flash as she glances at Alexander and slides in to a seat nearby. He's nursing a beer, and at some point a waiter or barista or whatever will slide back past and ask if Sera and Kalen want anything. With a winsome smile, Sera orders a Moscow Mule and also tells the waitress that she'll take the dress. And the other things on the right hook in the dressing room, please and thank you. Returns her lovely attention to Alexander, then, this half-hum of awareness beneath her voice. He's watch the heat haze, its radiant glow. She is watching the strands of the magic he weaves, the corner of her fine little mouth quirked into very very present half-smile.

"You're doing it. I'm proud of you. Not just because you're doing it, but because it seems like you fucking like it. Yeah?"

An errant shrug of her bare left shoulder, and Sera flashes a quick glance toward Kalen. Preens a bit, because the dress is rocking. "Lovely isn't quite, what I was going for, but thanks. And I find them bloody everywhere. From Buffalo Exchange right on up. I like to shop."

Then, another glance, this one perhaps sharper. Sera is about to inform Kalen that she thinks confession is shit, but - well. Something makes her hold her tongue.

Alexander

Alex thinks for a minute when Kalen wonders where Sera finds her clothes and thinks along the same lines. She certainly has a knack for finding unusual clothes that emphasise her features, but maybe she just makes more out of the outfits than the designers had in mind. Not many people would be able to carry it off with quite as much… presence.

Alex smiles when Kalen talks about his time with Ramon, taking a swig from the bottle as he talks. “Maybe not in exactly the same way with everyone? I’m glad you got to spend time with him, though. You’re looking well. Rested.”

Sera asks if he’s enjoying what he’s discovered for himself and he smiles again. “I do. I guess I’m finally getting to see a little more of that wonder that you’ve talked about.” There’s a flash of apology in his face when the thought of her previous attempt to show him her own wonder backfired somewhat. But it’s only a flash and passes as soon as it arrives. “So, yeah. How’ve you been?”

Kalen Holliday

"I'm terribly sorry," Kalen purrs at Serafine. "That dress is spectacular. And really, really hot." He does mean that, though mostly from a carefully constructed distance. There are lines he generally does not cross with Serafine, but that does little enough to change anything about how beautiful she is.

He orders wine, because of course he does. He's gotten used to it again.

"It's been...months since I was concerned about the immediate possibility of the world ending," he says to Alexander. "Given another few months I may have to do something ridiculous. Like...learning to bowl or something. Possibly even cooking, though-" He winces a little. "That might bring us right back to the world being in peril."

Serafíne

"Me?" An errant arch of her dark brows, as the waitress returns with her drink it is proper copper mug. This is that kind of place - what else would you expect from a boutique / gallery / bar in a trendy area of Sante Fe. "I'm cool." Neat little shrug here, which is quite as meaningless as you might guess, and for all that she absolutely means her response, it is also a strangely structured, complicated lie. Most niceties are. "I always am."

Then Kalen - from his carefully constructed distance - purrs at Sera and tells her that the dress is really really and there's a beat or two where she just studies his profile and looks oddly - abashed? It's a strange filter to see over her expression, but it's there. The corner of her mouth is quirked, and it quirks wider when he enunciates the litany of mundane things he might have to learn without world-ending tragedies to occupy him.

"Dan'll teach you the guitar," she tells him, quietly. Then, "hey Kalen? You can say lovely if you want. And I'll be right back. I gotta go pay and grab my things before the store closes."

So saying, she takes another draught of her drink and nips off back toward the store to see about her purchases.

Elijah

He had texted.

This particular book store cum coffee shop/gelato place was his most recent acquisition. He was now the mayor of a place called The Book Rack. The book shelves were packed high and full of second hand books of any and every kind. The cafe served things in mismatched mugs with bright smiles from the pink-haired Vietnamese girl who was slinging cappuccino today. The air even smelled like chai spices and some strange array of otherness that one seemed to only find in Asian food markets.

It boasted one of those little machines that heat seals the lids on the bubble tea. Elijah didn't know what honey dew and taro was going to taste like, but there were tapioca balls involved so he wasn't going to complain too terribly much.

He had a pile of books.

He'd already bought a couple, but was perusing the others to see if they were something that he actually wanted. Mostly art history. Things he couldn't replicate but most definitely wanted to understand. A beginner's guide to physics. Some first aid- bridging the gaps in his mundane knowledge base. Attire was comfortable, vaguely River Phoenix-esque with tousled hair and without the tragedy attached. Button down shirt, a pair of lacks, and a vest. There was a fine line between appearing like a hipster and a business school drop out, and today Elijah was most assuredly riding the line.

Grace

"Okay, so Elijah... You're going to maybe not want to do that," Grace says, walking up to Elijah. Like kittens to milk, so Mages are to information and the caffeine necessary to consume said information. She puts her hand out over his phone without looking up from hers. "Foursquare is so spy-tastic. I can find you too easily. At least make it a little hard?"

Smells like dead trees and espresso in here, and she takes a deep breath. Looks up and around finally, as though realizing at last that she might need sight to navigate. It does help. A bit. She's in her coat -- the all angles, suggestive of something vulpine. It was never her idea, but she's worn it enough and modded it enough to make it a thing thoroughly Grace. It feels like her -- sharp and shifting.

"You want to hit the ice cream at all?"

Grace has no books. Or at least, she hasn't chosen to buy any. She's read bits and pieces of quite a few while here, in complete disregard for 'this is not a library' rules. If it were up to her, every single thing in here would be digitized and given wings. Perhaps even including the people. Yep, definitely the people too.

Elijah

"Aw, come on. You have a steady stream of constant information regarding where I am and what I am doing at all times. In the event that I go missing, there's going to be twenty people at least who think that's weird because I'm not instagramming the Hell out of this," he only half whined, but his heart wasn't in it. There was a grin on his face and there he was. Comfortable and pleased and everything smelled like dead trees and espresso, and this awas a completely acceptable smell in the mind of one Elijah Poirot.

Does he want to hit the icecream? At all?

"I was hoping you would ask that, Tao said they have lemon pommegranate gelato," he said. He paused, "I dig the coat, by the way."

Grace

"I'll make you one. Give me an old coat you've got hanging around, and I'll fix it up for you," Grace says, and realizes that of course Kalen won't approve of that plan. He'd have Elijah in something new and tailored AND festooned with lights and infrared sensors. Grace is a creature of practicality, however, so Kalen can go take a flying leap -- into a ball pit or something, because she's not that mean.

"You'll need one to participate in the training room activities."

There are lemon pomegranate gelato scoops to obtain, so she starts wandering in that direction. Elijah can follow or not as he will, but she will keep talking.

"Didn't you ever think that those things were just a ploy to find out how to target adds at you better?"

"I'm pretty sure I've got a coat hanging around somewhere. I need some danger room gear, it seems," he couldn't help but grin, perking up at the notion that he was going to get to go be in a place where there was training for danger. Like an X-Man, but he didn't have cool mutant superpowers.

Magic doesn't count as a cool mutant superpower. That's completely different.

He does start to head that way, content to keep talking and acquire gelator because the idea of keeping him away from something with sugar was strange at best, "I figured it was a data mining kind of thing? You kind of voluntarily give up some privacy with social media. It's socially acceptably creepy."

Cala

Corner table in the little cafe, just within the spill of lights from the street. Reflections, see. Some businesses are starting to close down for the evening: the restaurant supply store next door. Others are just starting up: the strip club on the corner. The Book Rack isn't closing soon but the cafe is already half-empty. Maybe it'll fill up again, later. Folks who want gelato on the way out, or back in. Some local band's local track playing over the soundsystem. It's a concept album about biscuits.

The girl at the corner table is farthest away from Grace and Elijah and the most aware of them. An edge to her, the slantwise way she watches them. It feels both refined and furtive. And perhaps they don't even notice the way she watches them.

The way she is aware of them.

That doesn't mean they don't feel her.

Grace

Grace is oblivious to the spying, but not to the sensation of someone else in the place. Some new presence filters in softly, and her head rises a tic. Who is that?

New Awakened people in Denver are often very new indeed. It doesn't surprise or put her on edge to feel an opening. She's just curious, looking rather like her nicknamesake -- foxlike in her quick glance around.

Oh. They have strawberry...

"Elijah. Green tea gelato. I think I have hit sugar nirvana," she says, presses her hand to the glass covering the gelato counter.

Somebody is totally unconcerned.

Elijah

He paused, mid approach to the counter and he knew better. He knew that he shouldn't be following that sort of curiosity, but there was something new, and his gut pulled him towards the corner and-

What sort of creature would he be did he not follow his gut. "What do you open," he says to himself.

Really, apprentices shouldn't be left to their own devices and Grace said there is green tea gelato and he nudges her a little before starting his approach to the corner, like Aurora Rose towards sme magical spindle, but less trance and more curiosity. Because he was a curious thing, that curiosity would get him into trouble at some point.

"I'm gonna make friends," he called back.

And thus it is off to the corner to make friends.

Cala

The girl - she is a girl - is winter dressed. Dark coat, slung over the shoulder of the flimsy cafe chair. Battered leather gloves pulled off her hands and left to their devices on the table. Cup-and-saucer steaming on the table, one of the small metal teapots for the ferrying of hotwater on the table. Dark hair and dark eyes. Sharp, okay?

And forgettable.

She seems relaxed. Watching the dark street through the dark windows, tending to her tea. Strangers' reflections swimming across the surface, the bustle outside. The smear of headlights, the spray of green-to-yellow as the stoplights outside change colors.

Seems.

Elijah sees her better than Grace.

Reads the wary tension that underscores that facsimile of ease and disinterest.

Someone is braced for something. Someone is ready to run.

Grace

"Hmm?" Grace says. "Oh, new friend?"

She smiles at the guy who stands on the other side of the gelato counter waiting for her order. She's not going to give him any. Friends await. Or, at least, attempts at friendliness await.

No, she'll walk with Elijah over to the corner, letting him take the lead. Yes, let's see what'll happen. Let's see.

"Is that her?"

Elijah

Someone is braced for something. Someone is ready to run.

It makes someone else stop, or at least slow. She's going to run, she's going to bolt and something is going to happen. That much he knows, or thinks he knows. But he straightens, exhales and pulls his confidence together because he has to say something now that he's turned around and made his approach.

"Excuse me," he says, quiet enough to not be obtrusive. Loud enough to not be hard ont eh ears, "but is that any good?"

He gestured to the tea in its little metal teapot-and-cup-and-saucer set up. He doesn't justify, just continues, "I caught it out of the corner of my eye and I figured I might as well ask, ya know?"

Cala

The small cafe is half-empty, a few murmured conversations in the air, sure. The biscuit concept album on the sound system, turned down to the level that Norah Jones' records often are: inobtrusive.

So there is not much to cushion the conversation. To make it contextual or natural. Not much in the air to give it substance - that glow that seems to spark in the air in busy social spaces.

The girl - the young woman - gives up the pretense used to conceal her interest as soon as it becomes clear to her that Elijah has chosen a deliberate path to her or near her table. Elijah and Grace are half-way through the tables, one trailing the other, when she gives them both a frank, spare look. She has dark eyes. They touch on Elijah, then slide to Grace.

That is where they linger longest.

--

Her mouth is flat. There is a small, lumpen bag beneath her feet - leather like the gloves, battered, a match for her dark brown boots - and as Elijah comes up and says to her, excuse me, she is bending down beneath the table, stuffing or shoveling something back into it.

When she sits up again, she's pulling the drawstring closed.

Gives the teapot a sideglance. Gives Grace another sideglance, her mouth flat.

"It's fine," she says, non-committal. Reaching across the table for her gloves. A glimpse in the mug and it doesn't even look like tea.

Just hot water and lemon.

Both free.

Grace

The stuffing of a purse, the going for the gloves -- these are 'I'm leaving' signals. Grace has done that before. The fleeing from danger impulse used to be quite strong with her.

So she just smiles at the woman, trying to impress upon her the non-monster nature of the two of them. Just good people, we are. Not going to hurt you.

When the cautious woman's eyes land on her, mouth flat, all nerves and furtiveness, Grace will wave at her. Chill. It's cool. We're all cool here. Look at how cool we are.

Elijah

[Is there magic going on I need to know about? Prime 1 - sans foci (because spouting off Words right now may be bad). Diff 4 + 3 = 7 ?]

Dice: 1 d10 TN7 (2) ( success x 1 ) [WP]

Elijah

He's distracted.

There is a moment of focus there, and he is definitely distracted by somerthing or focusing on something just out the window. Just outside of his reach and he's thinking, and there are things he could say, and there are things he would want to say but he has so little language and Kalen had been very specific that those particular words were to be kept secret.

Can't very well be secret when you're talking to someone who is fleeing, now can you?

"Uh..." so, Mister Personable can't quite come up with words at that juncture. He's too torn elsewhere.

Cala

Elijah is distracted, trying to focus, trying to find the threads of magic in the air lingering around her. He needs more time, perhaps more words, but the strange girl has already flexed her long fingers around the strap of her backpack and now she's picking it up.

Now she's standing.

She has no great height and something about her is forgettable in the same way that Grace can be forgettable. Though she is taller than Grace, with a contained expressiveness that flickers behind her mask like the shadows of passing clouds over a summer sidewalk. These subtle flickers that are hard to spot beneath the tension.

Spare humor, the sort that some might call gallows.

A deep down impulse to smirk.

Her hair is pulled back and twisted into a loose bun. Her clothing dark.

"Excuse me," she says, once she is standing, the pack slung over her right shoulder, the gloves in her left hand.

And then she cuts between them, headed toward the front door.

Elijah

"Why were you watching us?"

It's the first thing that comes out of his mouth, the first thing that is coherent and he lets that thread of magic start to pull and he can't quite find it, can't quite grasp the concept of that fundamental truth. He can't quite put a meaning to it all, he can't find where intent pulled the formless into the fold.

Not suspicious, just... frank.

Grace

"I think maybe we chased her off," Grace says to Elijah, as his tumult rises about him. "It happens."

She looks to her phone in hand, and starts tapping away at it. There is another thing Grace likes to do with new people other than say hi to their face. She also likes to send them her own brand of text message -- one that works without the intervention of a phone company.

So her screen goes black, replaces the black with Code, that she slips herself into. All things connect to one another, and you might say that phones are uniquely suited to the task. They send out signals and receive them in turn and all of this tying and untying and bending fucking space goes unnoticed because it is so commonplace. But Grace can tie threads where there should be none.

Cala

Cala breathes out so sharply when Elijah asks that question. It is enough to arrest her. To make her stop her forward progress and turn around and just look at him. There is still a sense of furtiveness about her but beneath that is something else he can only just read: a kind of defiance. The look of saints and martyrs.

And - revolutionaries.

That smirk gets swallowed up in the collar of her oversized cloak.

There's no other answer for Elijah.

She gains the door soon after, pushes it open and heads out onto the dark street.

--

Meanwhile, Grace works. Or rather, Works.

The screen of her phone goes black and she loses herself in the Code. She knows this space, knows too that all spaces are one. She's met the girl, she just needs to get through, and it's working, everything is pulling together, the connection -

- Wait. There is no such number.

Anywhere.

Ever.

--

Outside: she does not double-back. Does not pass by the cafe's windows.

Still, Elijah sees the girl through the closing door, a brief glance over her shoulder.

Something about bodylanguage tells him that she very well may actually run.

Lock.

Key.

Grace

"She's afraid. What is she afraid of?" Grace asks Elijah, though her gaze is a confused one, straight into her phone.

"She's blocking my attempts to reach her," she adds, in quiet whisper. "I refuse to believe that anyone that young anywhere in this city has never owned a phone. That's ridiculous."

Even more ridiculous than any number of things Grace has seen. Apparently not even watching a ghul burst through a movie screen and start causing a riot is enough to merit the level of disbelief she finds in that particular notion.

Elijah

"I don't know yet," he said. Yet being the operative word. Yet because there was a puzzle, because now he wanted to know, needed to know if he could just hold onto the memory of her long enough to be more than dark and with the smirk of a revolutionary. Someone with fire.

He doesn't know the word for lock in Enochian, but he does know the word for key. He knows it because he tastes it on his tongue, because his wrists and fingertips have practiced drawing that sigil and the meaning of it sticks with him.

There is a door, some kind of door- but... but in that corner, it wasn't a thing, it wasn't a tangible thing, it was a person. If a person could be a feeling and it lingered. His gaze sharpened, and he watched.

"Lock... key," he said. "Lock," and then, something under his breath, something a little more guarded and alien. Key.

Elijah can see the Work Grace has done. It is strong, and peels apart the pattern of space and time. There is something else about the space where the girl sat, and even the trail she left behind that is already dissolving but feels - strange. Liberating?

No active work though. Nothing beyond Grace's Programming.

Elijah

[Magic, do what you will?]

Grace

"Oh, is that 'key' then?" Grace says, smirks, because she cares not for the rules of Hermetics. Kalen, who showed her his books of sigils long ago, likes to bend them from time to time as well.

Knowledge seeks such cracks in walls through which it can flow. Grace likes those faultlines.

"I just want some damn green tea gelato now. Miss Mystery can run away all she likes, I guess. If she doesn't want to talk so very hard, who am I to restrain her? Especially if she's afraid of us, that could be taken the wrong way..."

Elijah

"Whoever she is, she sure as Hell doesn't want to be contained or cornered, that's for sure," and that... sounds a little like approval from the young man. LIke he had room to really disapprove, but there he was. Things that were threads and intent and then ones and zeroes and keen edges and honed winged flight and they fluttered off into nothing.

Then something.

Then nothing again.

"I met a girl who didn't own a phone, like, ever? She may or may not have lived in a cult for the entirety of her life," he eventually does put his hands up and, hesitantly, turned around with a grin, "and it's key-ish. Approximation of what a key is for and not- anyway. Mostly key."
